Title: The Clone Wars - It's Back
Post by: Jeff on July 19, 2018, 03:52 PM
News out of SDCC (on social media) - Clone Wars panel ends with announcement of 12 new The Clone Wars episodes coming to Disney's upcoming streaming service...

Sounds like there is a trailer that will be released by SW.com soon!

Trailer is up now - Star Wars: The Clone Wars Official Trailer (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RI7WyhWZkzk&feature=youtu.be)

Also, SW.com has an interview with Dave Filoni:

I did not see this coming.  AT ALL.

And this is a pretty good reason to look into Disney's streaming service.  I've also heard a rumor that Disney/LFL might look to release the rumored Obi-Wan Kenobi project on that platform, too.

Sweet!  I did not catch the timing or service for this.  Is it supposedly only available on their streaming service with subscription?

Who is asking for more Clone Wars cartoons???  Is this setting up one of their other upcoming story lines?

I really don't get this other than maybe Filoni is totally obsessed with Clone Wars.

You've got to build up the Darth Maul/Crimson Dawn storyline somewhere... ???

I’m excited to hear this announcement - I always enjoyed Clone award far more than Rebels and it was a shame it got canceled when it did - but I’m not too wild about it being on Disney’s new streaming service as opposed to a more accessible platform like network or cable TV.

ME! I AM ASKING FOR MORE!!!  ;D

I was hoping this would come to pass...heard rumors leading up, thought maybe they would just finish up the rough half-completed episodes they had in the can, but this is even better than expected!

Now to convince Hasbro to make new toys from a 12 episode animated show with their original style and articulation...#heavylifting

I'm glad to see this get announced.  The series just ended with a bit of a whimper, rather than making a natural end that would transition well to the events of REVENGE OF THE SITH.  Season 6, the lost missions, was actually some really good stuff.

There are some unresolved story lines that I'd like to see explored.  Where did Rex wind up?  How did Anakin progress further down the path to the Dark Side?  What about Leia's line from ANH "General Kenobi, years ago you served my father during the Clone Wars....".  When?  And there was the Bad Batch story arc that was shown as incomplete animation that would be interesting to see completed.  That seems like it's going to happen, because one of the clones in the trailer appeared to be the Bad Batch squad leader.

Time for you to get an Instagram account then!

Steve Evans of Hasbro just posted on his instagram (https://www.instagram.com/p/BlcYvv5D8o4/) asking for fans' input on which Clone Wars figures they should do in 3.75" and 6" to support the new show.

If you don't have an Instagram account (or would rather not post there), I have also bumped up this thread (https://www.jedidefender.com/yabbse/index.php/topic,22064.msg609289.html#msg609289) as a spot for folks to share their ideas/wants.  I'll forward the thread link to Hasbro so they can check it out.

I'm not sure people were bombarding Disney to bring back Clone Wars, but there's a lot of people who felt that it didn't get the ending season that it deserved.  Once Rebels established that it wasn't Legends material, it makes sense for Disney to tie up loose ends.  And it's just one more vehicle to help sell the streaming service.

As for unresolved questions (Nick), we know where Rex ended up from the Rebels show.  I think we know enough about Anakin to see where he went wrong.  Leia's line about Kenobi serving Bail is probably just a loose way of saying Kenobi was a General in the Clone Wars fighting for the Republic AKA the Senate AKA Bail to some extent.  I would be surprised to find that there's anything more to it than that.  Personally, I think Muftak nailed it.  I bet we see some set up for Maul to better tie into the end of Solo.  I would not be surprised to see the Kenobi or Fett movies launched from this storyline as well.

RE: Rex it's not so much WHERE but HOW that I should have stated.  We know he got rid of his chip.  And unfortunately the whole Siege of Mandalore storyline, which involves Rex, Ahsoka and probably Maul, got relegated to print (the Ahsoka novel).  That seems worthy of exploring on screen, especially since that story arc seems to have taken place in the time shortly before Order 66.

The Leia line?  It always seemed to imply more of a connection between Obi-Wan and Bail than was ever portrayed in any of the movies or CW.  And why is Bail Organa so motivated to assist the Jedi as he does in ROTS?  Bail's opposition to Palpatine's power grab was clear, but his growing personal alliance with certain Jedi was not.

And Anakin?  He's been the central figure in the entire series, and we got to know him that much better through his Master/Apprentice relationship with Ahsoka.  He wound up being far better developed as a character in CW than he was in any of the PT movies.  Exploring Anakin that much more following Ahsoka's expulsion from the Jedi would provide some interesting insight into his character and his recurring theme of loss.

There's also Asajj Ventress.  Her story was resolved *SOMEWHAT* in print, but not on screen.  She linked back up with the Night Sisters, but her story arc with Dooku remained somewhat open-ended on screen.  Fans of the show seem to want to know how these things resolved onscreen.  Her story got explored more in the print release Dark Disciple, but given her role on the show she does seem worthy of screen time.

My thoughts exactly.  I'm guessing if Disney wasn't starting a streaming service we would never see this.  They're probably scrambling for content to justify the service to subscribers.

This alone won't entice me to their streaming service, but it'll be a nice addition if there are other things that draw me in.  As it stands right now I may wait for this to hit DVD before I watch any of these shows.  It'll all depend on pricing for the service.

In light of the return of Clone Wars, I am starting my own Clone Wars re-watch.  And I'm doing it in order per THE OFFICIAL SITE'S CLONE WARS CHRONOLOGY (https://www.starwars.com/news/star-wars-the-clone-wars-chronological-episodeorder).  I started yesterday and watched episodes 216 and 116, and I got through about half of the CLONE WARS theatrical release before I had to call it a day.  It's interesting watching the movie though, because several of the parts are played by movie actors (Samuel L. Jackson as Mace Windu, Ian McDiarmid as Palpatine/Sidious and Christopher Lee as Dooku) instead of the animated series actors.

Check out the trailer!  The final season premieres on Disney+ on February 21st. (https://www.starwars.com/news/star-wars-the-clone-wars-returns-on-disney-february-21)  Based on that wording, it sounds like episodes will be released on a weekly basis, much like how episodes of The Mandalorian were released.

I thought it was terrific, forgotten how much I loved this show. Trench was always a glaring omission from the animated line I thought, would have been such a cool figure too.

Bad Batch was awesome!

They removed the torture scene was in the animatic from On the Wings of Keeradaks. Not that I'm bothered by that, but it shortened the episode.

Uh, yeah, this arc starts to drags. I'm just over the locals and Clone teaming up thing. Maybe they did that less times than I think, but I dunno.

Agreed that they probably could have combined the last two episodes.  Not a lot of story advancement or character development in Episode 3 that they couldn't have squeezed in to the prior one.

Bad Batch was overall a really good story arc.

The first episode on Friday with Ahsoka was very underwhelming.   Her non-affiliated Jedi character could be really cool.  I hope it finds its footing and gets moving soon.

I liked it.  I know its not as high action as most of the episodes, but I appreciated the slow down to introduce new characters and show Ahsoka a bit lost as to what to do versus knowing exactly what she wants to do.  Leaving the order feels like a huge decision that should be met with a lot of indecision and uncertainty.  I felt like they showed that well and portrayed why she feels she has to hide the force going forward.  I also liked the notion that not everyone feels like the Jedi are good guys, even on Coruscant. The Robot chase scene got a little silly after a while, but I think younger kids would have really liked it.  My son's older and even he was cringing at all the damage it was doing.  Excited to see where they go with this arc.  My only complaint is the episodes feel so incredibly short!

Spoilers ***********

I was surprised to see last week's episode (Episode 9) seemed to take place minutes before the begin of ROTS.  So this will really be the end of The Clone Wars.

I'd love to see a separate spin off that follows some of the journeys of Ahsoka between this timeline and Rebels.

I was really excited to see a notable character from the Mandalorian storyline in Rebels turn up in last weeks episode.  And there was also the matter of a certain padawan standing next to his master at a Jedi strategy meeting!

Great, great stuff. Add so much texture to ROTS I feel like.

I thought it would have been a nice nod to the Tartakovsky series if they had mentioned Roronn Corob and the other 2 Jedi being sent to guard the Chancellor rather than Shaak Ti. In my mind that will always be the preferred version anyway. If for nothing else than the fact that it explains Grievous’ hacking cough.  :)

More thoughts to share but need to watch it again.

Agreed.

I'm interested to see how Ahsoka survives Order 66 (I've got some ideas but don't want to speculate here) and if they explain how Rex makes it out of the clone army to survive until Rebels.

Did I see Dryden Vos in there??

Seeing him along with the Pykes and a Falleen (from Black Sun I imagine) really helped provide some linkage for Maul to the crime syndicates.  The development of these connections has been done in such a great way to enrich this story in the context of the entire saga.

I'm interested to see how Ahsoka survives Order 66 (I've got some ideas but don't want to speculate here) and if they explain how Rex makes it out of the clone army to survive until Rebels.

This was hinted at in the 'Ahsoka' novel, but never fully fleshed out.  I'm curious to see that, too.

Other note?  The throwback to the original Lucasfilm logo has been great.  And the very distinct credit for George Lucas as the creator at the end of the episodes has been a beautiful acknowledgement of his work.  This Vanity Fair article (https://www.vanityfair.com/hollywood/2020/04/ahsoka-tano-clone-wars-finale-star-wars) that ran last week was a tremendous exploration of Ahsoka's impact on the Clone Wars series and Star Wars as a whole.  Dave Filoni put forth in the piece that it was George's express intent to disrupt things by introducing a Padawan for Anakin Skywalker.  And for that I'm thankful, because Ahsoka is a character that my own daughter has come to really enjoy watching in both Clone Wars and Rebels.

My sons and I were really blown away by the last two episodes.  The richness of the animation and the action sequences were fantastic.  For my 16yo to repeatedly say 'That is siiiick', when he's normally not impressed with anything, I thought was a great testament to just how well done this final arc is.  It only makes me wonder why they waited until the end to roll out this animation, unless it just wasn't available to them before now, or they didn't have the budget they have now to spend on it...  Either way, what a fantastic way to end the series.

I was able to watch the new episode this morning.  And the way the events of this episode dovetailed with things that took place in Revenge Of The Sith was really well done, along with linking back to a story arc that took place at least a couple of seasons ago.

I have always been hot and cold on this series, and the beginning of this season was sort of par for the course for me.

The final four episodes were fantastic.  Clearly knowing the finality of the run enabled Filoni to make big moves with the characters and tie them and the events unambiguously to the continuity.

The ending was phenomenal.

That last arc and especially last two episodes were close to perfection and I don't think I'm being hyperbolic. That final scene was the most I've ever felt Vader is/was Anakin if that makes sense. Wow.

Agreed with everyone else. Show had its ups and downs, but overall is very entertaining. First 8 episodes were pretty meh, but the last 4 were great and left me wanting more. I guess that's what Rebels is for, so I guess I should finally watch the last 3 seasons.
