Title: TOY FAIR 2008!
Post by: speedermike on December 28, 2007, 08:57 PM
Yeah, I know it's still six weeks away, and I still have a dozen or so 2007 figures to buy, but I'm already excited!  What does everyone think they'll show us, or what do you want to see?

I'm sure we'll see the first 2-3 waves of the 30th AC Collection, even though we've seen TFU and wave 1.
I'm hoping we'll see some Clone Wars stuff, however I have heard that this stuff might be kept under wraps until a newtwork has been signed up.  Who knows, ToyFair would be a great time to announce a network and premiere date.
I hope we'll find out what the Droid Factory waves are.
And, a littlle off topic, I'm looking forawrd to a whole lot of Indiana Jones stuff.

Any thoughts?

I wanna see an AT-TE!!

Wouldn't mind seeing the Order 66 packs Jedi either.

And of course, more basic figures we haven't seen yet.

That ought to satiate my unending Star Wars desires.  For a few minutes.

Most likely the Order 66 packs will be Target exclusives, and not shown at Toy Fair.

I think i am most eager for the BAF. I want to know what the deal is.

AT-TE hands down!

That or the question of it's existence answered straight once and for all.

If it does/will soon exist, then what are it's specs ie., height, length, electronics, how may clones will it holds, etc.

That will be quite enough for me.

Anything beyond wave 2. Seriously. I can't remember being this far along and not knowing at least half of next years basic figure releases.

BAF?
Title: Re: TOY FAIR 2008
Post by: Pete_Fett on December 29, 2007, 12:16 PM
BAF?

BAF = Build-a-Figure

The Rebelscum rumor report for 2008 stated that there would be a "Droid Factory" component to 30 figures in the basic figure line in 2008, where each of the 30 figures came with a part to build a droid. It has yet to be seen if all 30 parts will combine for one big droid or if the 30 parts will combine to form multiple droids.

I too hope that they will be unveiling this feature of the Star Wars line.

Hasbro has taken the concept started by Toy Biz in the Marvel Legends line, continued it in their own Marvel Legends line and they have now expanded it to collector waves of Spiderman and Fantasic Four figures. I think it is about time that they brought this concept to the Star Wars figure line.

It will be interesting to see the plans for Clone Wars, but I'm looking forward the most to seeing 2008 Waves 3, 4, and beyond.

2007 was a good year for new OT figures and I hope that 2008 can give us few more Cantina Aliens and Jabba's Palace dudes also.  :)

I doubt we'll see much Star Wars wise... maybe 2008 wave 3, more Force Unleashed stuff and maybe the first wave of Clone Wars figures but I have a hunch that Hasbro will be focusing more on the Indiana Jones line.

If we're going to see the first wave of the clone wars line, we'll probably see the remaining waves of the basic line.  :P

I can see them showing everything up to CW and possibly the first wave of main characters from CW. They will save the rest of 08 CW for Comic con.

I would really love to see the Falcon get the modern day treatment in that rumored large scale format at RS. I can see this one being debunked, I cannot see Hasbro spending that much on tooling large vehicles in one year. If they make it they can count on me buying it. I would rather see that than the AT-TE. Don't get me wrong, I love that vehicle and will buy it but I prefer the Falcon first!

Ooh the Homing Spider droid. Good call.

That's one very easy toy to make. All of the legs are the same and the body is basically two equal half spheres with some antennae attach and holes for the leg assembly. VERY easy toy to make.

This should be a $20 price point for sure.

If this is made, I'll definitely buy 3-4 of them if done right (scale, articulation and paint accuracy) and at the $20 price.

Me neither Chewie.  But hopefully this year we will.  It would be a nice way to round out some stuff from the Prequels.

Spider Droid
AT-TE
mini-Spider Droid
Tri-Droid
Hailfire Droid
repainted Tank (can't remember the name?)
That other walker Tank?
AT-RT's
STAP's
Tri-Fighters
Droid Fighters

Now if they would just release a TURBO-TANK I'd almost feel complete :)

If there really is a BAF initiative underway,, then I'm most anxious to hear about this.  30 figures is a pretty big requirement, so hopefully this is really multiple BAFs.  :o

Just checking for sure, but is Toy Fair next weekend, as in Feb 15-17?  I thought that's when it was, but I couldn't remember for sure.  I wonder what we'll see now, beyond the first three TAC waves that we've now seen.  Hopefully we'll at least get a look/confirmation on what is coming for Clone Wars, the AT-TE, and rumored Falcon (and some other OT goodness).

Yes, the fun begins next weekend...

Hasbro's Collector Media Day events are planned for Saturday, February 16th (from about 1pm EST to 6pm EST).  Hopefully (if all goes according to plan), we should be able to start posting pictures and updates on Saturday evening.

As for the rest of the coverage (Gentle Giant, LEGO, etc), Toy Fair 2008 officially starts on Sunday, February 17th and runs through Wednesday February 20th

Oh yeah!
The average diorama I have plans for are: 8'wide X 5'high X 4'deep. This will account for the Geonosis, Utapau and Coruscant ones for sure. The Felucia will be 6'wide X 3'high X 2'deep. The Coruscant dio is tentatviely marked up to be 4'wide X 3'high X 2'deep.

Plenty of room for them.

Though I may hold off on the 4th and 5th ones depending on how fast they fly off the shelves. If they sit, I may try to wait it out for a clearance. But if it looks like they are selling through, them I'll get the other two.

Strangely enough I actually want a sixth one to custom, but I don't think I could bring myself to taint this most awesome of prequel vehicles.

Partially off topic here, but my girlfriend and i went into the city last night for dinner (celebrate Valentine's a little early) and i drove passed the Javits Center and they are hard at work setting up for Toy Fair. Trailers were wrapped around the block and looking inside they already set up the floors with decorations and everything. Very exciting, can't wait for Sunday!  ;D

I would say it's as long as Amidala's ship with the width the same as well (side engine to engine, maybe). The stance is lower to the ground but still very tall. It's easily the most impressive vehicle to date. Its old school GIJOE Rolling Thunder/ shuttle BIG.

Okay, allow me to disect this from my perspective for a moment please...

STAR WARS CLONE TROOPER HELMET-meh. Inaccurate faceplate. It was unlikely for me to get this anyway, now more so.
STAR WARS CLONE WARS ULTIMATE LIGHTSABER-meh again. I've so been over toy lightsaber since getting my first MR one.
STAR WARS AT-TE-sweet Mary Mother of God, it's about damn time. TWO FEET LONG! WHOO-HOO. That is SO close to scale that I won't squabble over that. Sounds as well AND holds 20 clones! YES. Oh and only $99!!!! Hell's yeah. As I said before, that's three for me for sure, with maybe two to three more after those.
STAR WARS 3 ¾” CLONE WARS BASIC FIGURES-action feature WTF?!? Action feature? Bleh. Of the possibility these may be animated versions or hybrid version already had me pushing away from them. Action features? No way.
STAR WARS 3 ¾” BASIC FIGURES DROID FACTORY-Okay, cool concept. But I wonder which NEVER BEFORE CREATED droids we will get? There are 7 different ones. Speculation?? I'm down for these I suppose. Can't wait to see which build a figures these are though.
STAR WARS TRANSFORMERS ASSORTMENT-really depends on which characters. I've only bought ones I really want as opposed to 1 of every 1.
STAR WARS: THE FORCE UNLEASHED DELUXE LIGHTSABER-see previous entry regarding toy sabers.
STAR WARS MIGHTY MUGGS-not wasting my time or money on these. I don't need another line to collect. Especially one that is doomed to fail. I give this subline no more than 2 years starting now, 3 if it's extremely lucky.

7.99 a figure?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!? >:(

And I believe that is my breaking point... With animated-style heads and $8 pricepoint, I'm going to be passing on all of the Clone Wars figures. I guess I'll have to wait until the weekend to see what exactly the figures look like before I make a final decision. But at this point I don't mind scaling back quite a bit. I'm thinking I may go as far as almost exclsuively OT with only a few PT and EU figures if I really like them. The AT-TE is still a must have but other than that I think 2008 will be the start of a big cutback for me. I'm running out of room and I need to stop spending so much money on toys.

Man, 28 figures debuting for Clone Wars?  Wow!  Yeah, the action features scare me.  Hopefully those are not to obnoxious.  I am still not convinced kiddies love action features on 3 3/4 figures.  But oh well.

Mine, too. I've bought a few figures for over $8, like the vintage or McExclusives, but those are because I really wanted them. I can't see myself buying every figure at $8 apiece. If this is the path of this years figures then I will most likely be even more selective than I already am. I can't see how figures can jump a whole dollar point from the previous year, especially if the CW figs are going to have the detractor (maybe not for kids) of the animated heads and action figures. Hasbro is really making it easy for me to say pass to a lot of things this year. Of the 3 waves I've seen I only want 4 figures, maybe 5. Plus I'll probably wait on some of the Evolutions Jedi and Fett that I want and figure they'll be released on their own card someday.

Well, two things: 7.99, thanks Hasbro for 13 really great years, but this is where I get off.  I just can't keep doing it at that level, no matter how good the product is, and it is good.  They may be throwing in a part of a droid with every figure to somehow justify the price increase, but it's not enough.

I am jazzed for the movie, the prospect of another midnight madness, but the Clone Wars combo of action features, 'hybrid' styling and of course the price makes these undesirable.  These will be a much easier pass than any 'classic' offerings and I suspect this will be true for a lot of other collectors who have been out there for a long time.  I have a feeling Hasbro may double dip the hell out of this, but I will be very interested to see who and how many wait for the eventual 'realistic' heads/whatever else is not animated.

I paid 7.99 retail at TRU for Episode 1 figures in 1999!  (Things in NYC are always more expensive.)

Sure 7.99 is high, but all new assortments start high (ROTS, AOTC) then drop after the initial push.

What astounds me is that there are 28 CW figs, and 30 DF figs, thats 58 carded figures AFTER July!  Plus 8 in the ROTS Wave, 8 in TFU, and 8 in the Tatooine wave!  That's an extra 24.  Plus 58?  That's 82 craded figures in one year!! Maybe the Tatooine wave is wave 1 of DF, but that's still 74 figures.

$7.99
ACTION features
Animated or Hybrid style

suck suck and more suck

Only way I'm getting these is IF they are realistic AND I can get them on clearance...

Toy Fare will answer these questions (or so we all hope). Unfortunately I think there are going to be a LOT of disappointed people.

On one hand, I look at the price increase like this - if you buy all 30 "droid factory" figures, you get the pieces for 7 unique droids.  By my count, that's $240 bucks (30 x $8) to get 37 figures, which works out to about $6.50 each (plus tax of course).

Not that different from what we are paying now for the 30AC stuff, so I am fine with it (especially if a few of the figures still have a larger pack-ins, like Ak-Rev with the drum and what-not).  That's just me though.  If you don't buy them all and you are not into the 7 bonus figures/droids, I can see why the increase would bother you.

On the other hand, for the Clone Wars figures (with no announced pack-ins yet), it's a harder pill to swallow at $8 each...  I still have to decide where I'm going with that line.  :-\

Now why did you have to go infusing logic into this, heh heh...
Title: Re: TOY FAIR 2008

I can't say I disagree with Jeff's logic at all, I'm more disappointed by design directions than the price increase, but I'd be lying if I said the price increase makes me happy...  They could've made it at least slightly more gradual rather than a full $1 bump.  Would it really have hurt?  $.50 goes a long way spread out among that many figures and makes inflation just an easier thing to deal with.

The show I think will be the ultimate decider on my level of "disappointment" with this year...  I can safely say $7.99 sucks and, while I totally get where Jeff's breakdown comes in (anyone with account has to appreciate it), I think it sucks...  1 SW figure costs what a two-pack of military figures I collect costs, or almost two separate figures...  That's pricey to me.  That's why I'll probably be apt to turn my nose up to stylized Clone Wars figures.  Otherwise I wouldn't care quite as much.

I doubt it ultimately impacts my spending on the basic figures...  I do think it could impact army building though, especially prequal era, and customizing fodder.  Then again, $6.99 impacted that...  I didn't go hogwild on a lot of the clones like I probably would've liked to have.  Such is life.

That said, if I come out of Toy Fair seeing a scale Torrent Starfighter, a scale AT-TE, some SA Rebels...  I think I'll be ecstatic at the prospects of what is coming in 2008, just not what 2008 is going to cost.  I mean, I really want to get into IJ stuff too, and that again is something that will make me adjust Star Wars spending habits...

I have to just take all this in, and probably decide on the fly...  I've always budgeted things fairly rigidly, so I'll just have to stick to that model and "deal without" when it's just not a good idea financially to buy something I maybe dig.  I just think the price increase could really cut into some things I enjoy as it is coupled with a LOT of products I'm interested in this year...  To be honest, it makes the potential Clone Wars figures being a bust aesthetically, look like an eappealing prospect.  That might almost come as a blessing in disguise to me I guess.  :-\

If you're on the fence, this is the time to get out.

I can still remember picking up ROTS figures for less than $5.

Like everyone else, I'm definitely not crazy about the price increase.  Each year I go in thinking its going to be the year I cut back overall (and that's what I tell my wife), and it seems to be more difficult each year than I think.  I'm excited to see all the product this weekend, and the Build-a-Droid series sounds pretty cool - but like I've said before, I'd really be ok if there wasn't quite so many figures each year (especially the last half of the year).  It makes it really tough to keep up, even if all you collect is Star Wars (which seems to be very few of us these days).  I usually end up liking/picking up most-to-all of the figures (although I'm not a completist), and just the basic figures alone are going to cost a fair amount (not to mention vehicles, exclusives, and "other" stuff).

One question though, so is The Force Unleashed wave the last wave until July 26th then?  Obviously there are exclusives (like the Order 66 packs, etc.), Evolutions, comic packs, and the new Legends wave - but is there going to be that big of a basic figure line gap (from March to July?).  I guess it gives me a chance to save up (or more likely, spend it on Indy stuff).  Either way, I'm pretty excited to see all the offerings this weekend.  I will say, with the price increase and all the figures - as much as I'm looking forward to it, I hope the rumored Falcon holds off until next year.  I know I'll want it, but I just don't see how I'm going to be able to afford all of it.  Time to start finding stuff to sell :P.

I'm actually hoping that I don't like this Clone Wars line, save for the vehicles.  It would be nice to not drop a grand on this line.

That whole safety scare with Mattel and the Chinese manufacturers might not have hit Hasbro in the headlines.  But I would be almost certain that Hasbro launched their own internal investigation into the safety precautions that the Chinese factories are taking, and might have stepped up their own protocols.  The result?  An increase in costs that is passed along to the consumer.  Translating to an increase in retail figure prices.

And the cost of oil is definitely another consideration.  Oil is a major component in the makeup of the plastic our figures are made from.  Add in the additional costs there, too.  The cost of running the factories, as well as the increased costs for shipping because of fuel:  trans-pacific shipping from China, distribution shipping, and shipping to the stores.  All of those costs are increased by higher oil prices.

Now am I happy about a price increase?  No, definitely not.  But I could see something like this coming.  And as a result I may cut down on my army building.  Or try to shop at stores that offer sales, etc.

$7 a pop has really limited the number of figures I buy.  But eight bucks?  I think I'm done.

Like so many things we realy don't know the answers to, I'm sure people can analyze this all we want.  But unless we see some sort of similar price increase across the board for Hasbro's lines of toys, I don't think I'd chalk a nickel of this up to safety inspections.  And I'm not sure one can blame it on oil either... again, unless we see this across the board for their other toy lines.

This is roughly a 14.3% increase in retail price though, which is significant.  Aren't the Indy figures slated for a similar price point?  I'll take an optimistic approach and predict they'll be lowering prices on Indy stuff after a few weeks when they see that it's just too high of a price.  And they might just follow suit with these Star Wars lines and keep the price around $7.00.

Though I can see Target at the gate charging more... looks like whatever Walmart charges will will be the real factor here... after all, they charge more than a buck less for GI JOE stuff.  Yet some still despise them.

Hmm... now I'm seeing that the Indy figures are going to be $6.99 each.  That's better.  But if that's the case, then why Star Wars a buck more?  Licensing?  Greed?  Both?

I'm not too worried about the $7.99 thing - and I don't think it will be permanent (we went from $7.99 at Target in 1999 to $4.99 a few years later) but I'm definitely not buying anything that is animation-style, not even 1 of each.

For sure its licensing...they paid a pretty pretty penny for the rights to make those toys.  The MSRP on GI Joe is $5.99 (which they own wholly)and is an equivalent level of figure accessory and articulation wise

I did a toy run at lunch time today (found nothing) but I did notice the price hike target pulled a few weeks back has been rolled back they shot up to 6.99 and are now down to 6.49.   Maybe it is to clear out the glut of legends and 06 figures they have clogging the pegs.  but I thought I mention it. see if anyone else has seen it.

Wouldn't the continued floundering of the US economy/dollar factor in as well?  It's not like your dollar has really rebounded at all in the last while.  When the orders for the TAC stuff were solicited, it was probably doing better and that might have been held over during the tumble the dollar took. Now that it's a new year and a new series (of sorts) wouldn't they be pricing it on the current margins?  In other words, the retailers are probably paying more to get them and that's being passed on to you?

All of that in addition to the licensing costs.

I agree with Scott.

I'd agree on the other factors (oil, general inflation through overhead and other factors, weak dollar, etc.) if this was an across-the-board increase in prices at Hasbro, but I'd be willing to wager that isn't the case, and certainly not by the same percentages even if some other items maybe are seeing some flux in price this year.  I think it's partially licensing, partially the natural attempt of Hasbro to capitalize on the line at a potential peak in popularity before it troughs out a bit again, plus you have some ideal things to "blame" too right now...  That's a little trick I'm sure Hasbro's not immune to.

Hasbro's probably dealing with the other increases in costs like everyone else, but you really can't cite giant spikes in MSRP's around the industry.  Slight maybe, but really have there been big bumps in prices of toys that we've seen so far?  Have $10 LEGO sets cut back on the number of parts-per-set, or increased from $10 to $11?

I hope the price comes down, but in the meantime you just deal with it and adjust how you collect if you want to bite back a little bit without abandoning the hobby entirely.

I was thinking the same exact thing, especially if there's a decline in sales. I'm wondering about the CW line, because, although a lot of us might skip the basic figure sub-line entirely, the kids might go crazy over it. Then again, will the parents buy $8 figures when they can get more for less?

THAT is my point as well. There are so MANY other toys for far less and you get more. Star Wars figures have now become pushed out of competitive prices.

Hasbro is going to take a SERIOUS hit here, I think. They blame US (even though according to them collectors are not the driving force among SW consumers)

Fact is though that if we the collecting community as a whole feel the price is too high to start, that SHOULD account for something.

it REALLY would have been nice for Hasbro to actually consult with the major SW collecting websites and run polls/whatever to determine where the interests was for toys related to the Clone Wars Cartoon.

Again, we'll find all of this out hopefully within the day from the Toy Fair coverage, but it sure is nerve racking, and collecting/hobbies should never reach that point.

Yarna! It's Yarna! YAHOOOO!!!! I think I really underestimated this wave, should've waited for pics to say it sucked. However, due to the $8 price tag, I will not be buying any deleted scene figures, but I will be buying all the others. So I'm assuming the funky looking astro-droid is from the Droid Factory line and its pieces will come with this wave?

I'm pulling pics off my camera as I type this... fun times and lots of good stuff to come.

Some text stuff...

- After TFU, the 30AC line ends and will be replaced with the new The Legacy Collection in July.

- Yes, there is a gap for the basic figures from March to July, but it will be filled with lots of stuff - Target Order 66 sets and plenty of other exclusives for you to buy to fill your time...

- The Legacy card have a Stormtrooper head akin to the Clone Helmet on the Clone WArs cards - very cool.

- By Christmas, there will be a third line... Legacy Legends (aka the repacks).  Mainly stuff that "compliments" the Clone Wars theme.  All reissues of the old stuff/characters that kids might see in the cartoon - think Jedi and/or droids and clones and stuff.

- The GH Dewback and Rancor are fantastic (no pics to share though :().

Watch for more soon!

Okay so there is a lag between waves. works for me. There should still be enough to buy between and if not, more time to save for the AT-TE, Homing Spider droid and AT-APs.

Cool about the Stormtrooper card. Can't wait to see pics of it.

Gack, a THIRD line! Well, hopefully they'll be figs people want or there will be yet MORE pegwarmers.

The GH Dewback and Rancor sound cool. I'm happy about this news.

My thoughts about the exclusive stuff:

Wal-Mart:
  - The 6 Droid Factory 2-packs (7/1)-2packs? I thought these would be single carded figs with droid parts in them. So are they $10 sets now??
  - GH Falcon (3/1)-pass, I already have the first issue
  - 3 more Comic Packs: Marvel Lando & Stormtrooper, Kashyyyk Wookiee and Clone, and RotS Anakin and Dooku-Marvel Lando set PASS; Kashyyyk clone and Wookiee MAYBE, have to see pics; Pass on ROTS/Dooku
  - A-Wing with Arvyl Crynyd [Red/Classic colors] A-Wing (7/1)-Classic colors? Cool, though I may pass on it. I'd just want it for the figure, UNLESS it has electronics.

TRU:
  - GH Rancor set-SWEET! Really looking forward to this and pics.
  - GH AT-RT set-Hmm, I think I'll like this set too.
  - STAP Attack Battle Pack-I can't remember what is in this set. If it's Pilot Battle droids, then I'll get it. If not, then it's most likely a pass for me.
  - Hoth Wampa/TaunTaun Battle Pack-PASS

Target:
  - GH Endor Speeder Bike Cinema Scene (ewoks, scouts, bikes, Luke) (3/23)-prolly a pass
  - GH Mustafar Cinema Scene  (Obi, Padme, Anakin, pile of shocktroopers) (3/23)-hmm, have to see it, but I may just get this one.
  - Aayla's Jedi Starfighter (3/23)-PASS
  - TFU Kashyyk Battle Pack (the one that popped up earlier in the week) (3/23)-PASS!!!
  - ALL-NEW Jungle Rancor with Felucian Rider (April)-Hell's yeah. Really looking forward to it.
  - Order 66 Sets (4/15)-the jedi/clone sets, yes, but only a little bit.

Well I just got back from Toy fair and the Hasbro show rooms and I have to say it was awesome. First i have to say my girlfriend is awesome  ;D. We totally got in with no trouble with her press pass. We saw all of the Hasbro products and for the most all were really good. (FFF makes awesome BAF) The Indy / Star Wars room was def. the highlight. I was surrounded by greatness and couldnt stop smiling while trying to act professional. The figures look great in person, even the animated ones and Yarna is awesome. The battlepacks and evolution sets looked great and the comic packs were really good too. Overall it was just really cool and did i mention my girlfriend is the best.  ;D I was really hoping for a Star Wars or Indy exclusive, but the press kit was a my little pny set  :-[

EDIT: Changed my post thanks to Scott's update, JD's got everything I was talking about (press shots) right HERE (http://www.jedidefender.com/gallery/imageFolio.cgi?direct=Conventions/Toy_Fair_2008/Hasbro_Star_Wars/Official_Hasbro_Images), so nevermind my post :).

This doesn't necessarily fit in the TAC section, but it covers everything shown at Toy Fair, so I thought I'd put it in this thread.  JTA (http://www.jeditemplearchives.com/content/modules.php?name=News&file=article&sid=3709/#details) has a gallery up with large pics (press shots) of everything that Hasbro had on display in their showroom.  Just thought I'd pass it along if anyone is interested.
We've had them HERE (http://www.jedidefender.com/gallery/imageFolio.cgi?direct=Conventions/Toy_Fair_2008/Hasbro_Star_Wars/Official_Hasbro_Images) since last weekend ;)

Now that I'm home from Toy Fair, I'm going to try to offer some closer (non-cropped or resized) looks at the figures that were shown...

If anyone has special requests on figures, let me know and I will go back through the camera and see what I might have.

Jeff - first off, thanks for the great coverage here at JD, really nice work.  Just curious of your opinions, what impressed you the most of Hasbro's offerings at Toy Fair?  Seeing everything in person, I'm curious what you thought of everything.  What figures look good?  Opinions of the animated CW stuff?  Is the AT-TE as impressive (and large) as we're hearing?  Just wondering some of your thoughts, being there first-hand.

I'm most interested in more detailed pics of the AT-TE if you've got 'em.  Thanks!

I've been pretty happy with the AT-TE pics myself, would like to see more up close and personal shots of more comic characters if possible, but if not that's ok.

I was marveled at how fast the pictures started ARRIVING, as much as the quality of them. :)  We had stuff flying in way quicker than I figured we would!  Jeff did an outstanding job with that too I think, considering that's a real bear to deal with.  Ryan and Scott did a great job helping out too, so it went off smoothly.
