Title: The Will Ferrell Appreciation Society
Post by: Matt on June 29, 2004, 12:23 PM
Alright--anyone else looking forward to this one?

Ron Burgundy (Ferrell) is the top-rated anchorman in San Diego in the '70s. When feminism marches into the newsroom in the form of ambitious newswoman Veronica Corningstone (Applegate), Ron is willing to play along at first-as long as Veronica stays in her place, covering cat fashion shows, cooking, and other "female" interests. But when Veronica refuses to settle for being eye candy and steps behind the news desk, it's more than a battle between two perfectly coiffed anchor-persons... it's war.

IMDB page (http://imdb.com/title/tt0357413/)

Opens July 9.

Will Ferrell rules.

Yes, yes I am.  Love his stuff, much better than most SNL Alums.  Sounds like a good premise, not sure if its a theater viewing or a rental down the road

And--holy crap--check out Ferrell's schedule:

Confederacy of Dunces, A (2004) (in production) .... Ignatius J. Reilly
Joan of Bark: The Dog that Saved France (2006) (announced)
Talladega Nights (2006) (announced)
Producers, The (2005) (announced) .... Franz Liebkind
Tenacious D in: The Pick of Destiny (2005) (announced) .... Music Shop Dude
Bewitched (2005) (pre-production) .... Jack Wyatt/Darrin Stephens
Kicking & Screaming (2005) (filming) .... Phil Weston
Curious George (2005) (filming) (voice) .... The Man in the Yellow Hat
Wendell Baker Story, The (2004) (post-production)
Melinda and Melinda (2004) (post-production)
Winter Passing (2004) (post-production) .... Corbit

I believe that--at this point--either he or Ben Stiller will be in every movie released from now until the end of 2005.

I think it was the movie thread where I said that Dunces is in limbo, seems like financing has been pulled.  Not sure if he's totally right for the part anyway.

I love Curious George, ranks right up there in terms of my favorite book series as a kid.

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0381971/

Sounds like its animated as well...JediMAX will be 3 next year, might be his first real movie we go to.

Bewitched, huh...Nicole Kidman as Samantha...huh  Zany...I'll base my opinion on that one when the Siskel and Ebert of RS (Sanford and Depmode) give their reviews

Will Ferrell rules.

That he does.  Just rewatched Old School recently and he is pure comedic gold.  Probably won't catch this in the theater, but will probably buy it on DVD.

I think his presence alone saves Old School from being a piece of crap.

Spanish (Rick Gonzalez): "Come hit this right here! You need to hit this!"
Frank: "No, I appreciate it, but I told my wife I wouldn't drink tonight. Besides, I got a big day tomorrow, but but you guys have a great time."
Spanish: "Big day, doing what?"
Frank: "Well, um, actually a pretty nice little saturday, we're um, we're gonna go to Home Depot. Yeah, buy some wallpaper, maybe get some flooring, stuff like that. Maybe Bed Bath And Beyond, I don't know. I Don't know if we'll have enough time."
Kids: "(Laughing)"
Frank: "Ok, you know what, you know what, gimmie that thing. I'll do one, I'll do one!"
Spanish: "He's gonna do one."
Frank: "I'll do one."
Spanish: "Now' that's a talented man right there. That's what I'm talking about!"
Frank: "Fill it up again!"
Kids: "(Cheering)"
Frank: "It's so good! Once it hit's your lips, It's so good!"

We'll be catching this one as well if we can.  Big Will Ferrell fans, and all of his movies seem to have that sense of humor that we enjoy.  I kind of agree that he saved "Old School" as well, but I also enjoyed Vince Vaughn in that movie...."earmuffs".  I think I might have been expecting too much when I saw it though, but it was good.

I went into Old School expecting nothing and came away laughing more at any movie since Kingpin which showcased the Over the Hill Bill Murray.  I think the scene where Ferrell take the Tranq Dart to the neck is one of the funniest scenes of the last 10 years

Yeah, that scene is hilarious, you are right Scott.  Its a movie we haven't yet picked up on DVD, but the more I read the comments and think back about it, we may have to.

Wouldn't you feel sort of akward if Cory liked a movie that you liked? I'd feel like I was in the wrong.

Can't argue with that.  Everyone I've talked agrees that Will made the movie.  And most of them (including myself) seem to think it would have been so much better if Casey Kelso wasn't in it.

Apparently there's enough footage ready for the fall to create a psuedo-second feature, "Wake Up, Ron Burgundy" according to some of the folks at DVDTalk:

Quote
McKay: Yeah, we're going to put out a DVD with all of it. We literally had enough extra footage that we made another, second movie called Wake Up, Ron Burgundy. That's right. I'm not kidding. That is not a joke. It's absolutely true. It's an hour and forty minute second movie of entirely fresh material that will eventually be put out on DVD.

I would probably pack up and move to somewhere in southeast Asia to become a Buddhist monk, where I would undoubtedly spend the rest of my days questioning my existence.

Not to worry, though--I have a tendency to only like good movies.  I don't think we'll be getting our "DVD libraries" confused, any time soon. . .

Back to Anchorman for a moment:

I love Will, but I wouldn't be nearly as psyched for this movie if it weren't for these two guys:

"I DON'T KNOW WHAT WE'RE YELLING ABOOUUTT!"

I've been lurking for a quite a while, waiting to see how much **** could be spoken behind my back, in what now seems to be typical Jedi Defender fashion, and I felt as if it needs to be addressed.

Scott: I don't know what it is that I ever said, or done to you, but why do you insist on playing into the whole "Sanford" gimmick? I used to think you were a pretty class guy until all this unfolded, you you chummed up with Matt B, here. What gives?

Matt:

First of all, much like your friend Force Guy, I don't know if you're an enigmatic coward, or a goddamn genius.

You can insult others, but you are careful not to open yourself up to criticism? Why is that? Too insecure?

As usual, you fail to grasp the concept of opinion or taste, especially in movies. In addition, I think you're afraid to admit that we may have similarities, but you'd never bother looking for them because you enjoy conflict, correct?

Being the internet and all, you'd think this is one place where you don't have to be so privy, but alas.

All:

Keep the Sanford jokes coming.Anyone ever bother checking out the feedback, and sales record for "junkyard_junkies" on eBay? See how much "junk" I've been selling? Or is that jealousy is breeding envy, in turn, even more ignorance?

Just thought I'd clear the air before the "Cheers" of the internet turns into the "Sweet Valley High" of Star Wars collecting forums.

I'm not expecting a serious reply to this, I just felt as if Berry should realize what kind of environment he's promoting/allowing here. Word does get around, rest assured.

There wasn't any sh!t being spoken behind your back--anytime I've ever mentioned you, I've done it with the full knowledge that you would have been reading.  You may have "deleted your account" (multiple times), but it's always been plainly obvious that you were reading.  Same thing with me and Rebelscum--I may have been banned a long time ago, but I still hang out there a couple of times a day--looking for sig file material.

Force Guy is the goddamn genius.  Me?  I'm the enigmatic coward.

Yeah, I am insecure.  I hate myself, and my lot in life, and have been contemplating suicide for years.  I'm terribly disappointed with the way things have turned out.  I'd be the first to admit it.

Be that as it may, that doesn't mean that you don't suck.

I do enjoy the conflict, yes indeed--but only with the people that deserve it.  And you, with your homophobic, racist, holier-than-thou views on life and society, deserve it more than anyone else I know.

Ignorant jealousy on my part.  The amount of money you make, or the number of feedback you get, well, that's nice, but that doesn't change the fact that your worldview reveals you to be a despicable human being.

Hey...I have nothing against you and never had.  That said...I don't like how you've had some snide little comments about this site as well.  Yeah there are people here that don't like you and have made that fact public.  But we aren't here to make everyone get along and our "community" has been doing better than it ever has to tell you the honest truth.  We track that sort of stuff and things have never been better

People aren't talking here behind your back, most members that are talking about you are banned from the place you post so they have no choice.  I think they would be saying the same thing to your face if they could and you wouldn't have deleted yourself 3 times here already.

Please do let word get out (though I don't see how it is not already, being a public forum) that JediDefender doesn't allow the stupid crap to go on here and those that do are banned from the forum. I want to enjoy my time online, at my website and if a person or people are bringing down this forum in my eyes, they are dealt with. If you don't like it here or don't like the people, don't post or read here. Simple as that. The high class of collectors that are allowed to be here and contribute in a postive manner don't need their time wasted. This is not directed at you- but to everyone.

I don't have any intentions of "outing" any misconduct on these boards. People come and go, and they visit alot as well. I am sure they witness the undue slander that goes on at times.  I think this site tends to be selectively contradictory and favorable at times.

I believe it was BDW that was quoted as JD not being a place for Rebelscum rejects to come and bitch, when the amount of RS bashing on this board has no equal.

I went Friday night...

Packed theater, and rightly so.  It's very funny...

Honestly, I wasn't looking forward to this film as much as some others I was wanting to see, but I was really happy I went...  My female companion was moore interested in seeing this as were my friends, so it was a nice get-together as well, but the movie rocked.

Plenty of space?

Favorite part was easily the combat sequence between all the different channels.  Tim Robbins as the lead of the Public Channel was funny, but all the comedian cameos of that "clique" were funny too...  And a surprise.  I didn't know they all popped up.

Old "Brick" throwing the Trident was the best part of the sequence though.  The whole theater was howling at that...

Also, a funny political shot at the end when they gave the updates on where each character went in life...  :)

Staying till the end yields some extra stuff, but nt a ton.  Outtakes, and a little bit of Ron Burgundy and the guys at the end.

Very funny...  I've seen a lot on "making of Anchorman" specials that didn't make the film surprisingly...  Funny stuff too.

Nobody else catch it this weekend?  Seems unlikely!

I'd say, out of everyone, "Brick" gets the most laughs throughout the film.

We went Friday night (sold out as well), and really enjoyed it.  Would have been better if we didn't have to sit down in the "kiddie" section with all the junior high kids...but we should have gotten there earlier then.  Anyways, the movie is very good...and quite funny I thought.  Steve Carrell (Brick) did steal the show though I think, and the outtakes at the end (during the credits) are funny too.  I'd recommend seeing it as well, good movie.

So, before the RotS hype, I made it out to the theaters to see "Kicking and Screaming".

Plenty of funny to go around.  Granted, it wasn't a comedic masterpeice, but it did offer up a few funny parts, such as the first trip to the Coffee shop and the Tetherball game between Duvall and Ferrell.

Anyone else see this one?

Anyone else looking forward to "Bewitched"?  Not sure how I feel about the premise of the movie, but it does sound funny at least with lots of opportunity for Ferrell to fall down a lot.

Hmm, there's movies out other than ROTS?

Well, I didn't catch that (doubt I do) but I did catch some of Farrel on SNL and more importantly his (most likely?) last Celebrity Jeopardy Bit.

Had Hammond not been there it wouldn't have been as funny, but man that was a good one.  0 + 0 = 0, and he wagered Poop.  Classic.

Thought I'd give this memorable thread a much-needed bump for the upcoming Ferrell flick, Talladega Nights: The Ballad of Ricky Bobby (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0415306/).

"Help me, Jesus! Help me, Jewish God! Help me, Tom Cruise! Tom Cruise, save me with your witchcraft!"

Anyone else looking forward to it?  I am.  This is the first time I've been interested in something NASCAR-related since, well, ever.

Great cast:

Ferrell, Amy Adams, Sacha Baron Cohen (Ali G), Gary Cole (Lumbergh), Jane Lynch, Chris Parnell, John C. Reilly, Andy Richter, and many, many more, too numerous to mention.

Directed by Adam McKay, written by McKay and Ferrell, and produced by Judd Apatow--the same exact lineup for Anchorman.  So I'm assuming that if people liked Anchorman, they'll like this, and if they hated it, same thing.

Due on Friday, August 4.

(P.S. Anyone see that there's gonna be an Old School sequel (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0477054/)?)

Came back from a 1:45 showing of Talladega Nights. Thought it was a little less funny than A:TLORB, but still pretty good. Anyone else seen it?

I agree, a little less funny then anchorman, but still very good.  Ferrel was pretty funny, and John C. Riley was great.  Molly shannon was funny too, and the outtakes were hysterical!

I thought it was funny, but I agree about it not being as funny as Anchorman. Then again, I didn't like Anchorman that much when I first saw it, but it grew on me. Hysterical stuff overall, and I'll definately pick up the DVD on release day.

See, I'd put this one well above Anchorman.  My wife and I loved this movie.

I love Will Ferrell - think he's probably the funniest comic since Steve Martin.  That said, Gary Cole damn near stole the show on this one.

No, if you've seen one Will Ferrel movie you've seen them all.

Gob isn't worth the price of admission without Buster or Michael.

PS:  I didn't know he (Will Arnett) was married to that chick from SNL with the weird mouth.

So if you've seen, say, Anchorman, then you needn't see, say, Stranger Than Fiction, I take it.  They're the same movie.  Okay.

I won't bother with Blades of Glory, because that nitwit from Napolean Dynamite makes me cringe.  Just thinking about Napolean Dynamite makes me cringe.

I thought Stranger Than Fiction was good, and Will Ferrell really did a fantastic job.

*spoiler for those that haven't seen STF*

Despite being a good movie, it damn near ruined it for me that he didn't die.

The Will Ferrell Movie Generator (http://www.collegehumor.com/willferrell)

"Your seed is lucid, like Minerva's lucid falcon!"

The scary part is, I can genuinely imagine one of his characters saying this line. Seriously, I can hear it in my head right now. (http://cheesebuerger.de/images/smilie/konfus/p070.gif)

Also, I think all profanity in my vocabulary should be replaced with "Sweet Gnarls Barkley's blueberry!"

Will Ferrell plays Buddy Washington, an egotistical, obnoxious chess player at the top of his profession. He and his sidekick, played by David Koechner, seem invincible until their dominance is threatened by a new rival. Buddy Washington's excessive pride causes him to spiral downward to comical lows. When he is at the depths of despair, he removes his shirt and bellows,

Sweet Spider-Man's cymbal! My voice is a burning manhole!

After a wacky training process featuring a surprise cameo by Seth Rogen and a marginally-developed romantic subplot, he enters into a climactic showdown with his rival and emerges victorious - but not without learning a thing or two about friendship.

Estimated Opening Weekend Box Office Returns: $49.3 million

Land of the Lost is just the latest proof that Ferrell's shtick -- the clueless, self-deprecating blowhard man-child -- is growing stale. You can put him in a NASCAR jumpsuit, a basketball uniform, or a quantum paleontologist's khakis, but he's pretty much always the same guy. You know that at some point he'll take off his shirt and reveal his flabby belly, or dump dinosaur urine on his head, and then mug at the camera as if to say, Ain't it hilarious? Well, yes it was...the first time.

Thanks for the link DSJ.

Wow - I had no clue he had his own thread.  I liked Will Ferrell's stuff, but I'm getting really burnt out on his "humor" now.  Never watched SNL back in the day so I never even saw him until A Night at the Roxbury hit video/VHS/DVD or whatever it was in the tail end of the 90's.

I would have liked seeing that Man vs Wild episode with him - that looked pretty funny.

I've gone through a weird roller coaster phase with Ferrell, at first I liked him, then I didn't care for him, then I liked him again, and now I don't care for him again. I have NO desire to see Land of the Lost, and when I first started seeing previews I actually felt like I would have to force myself to see it because it's Will Ferrell, and thus everyone will see it, and thus I will need to see it in order to stay current. Looks like nobody saw it, so I don't have to. I'll probably pick it up in a year when it's $6.99 at Best Buy, solely for the sidekick (the guy who plays Kenny Powers in Eastbound and Down).

Will Ferrell knows how to be a funny guy but like that article says, he's pretty stale right now. Perhaps it's time for him to reinvent himself?
