Title: MLB 2011
Post by: I Am Sith on January 4, 2011, 04:45 PM
I realize this isn't related to the players/teams, but I thought I would mention that a local Chicago radio station is putting on a roast of Ozzie Guillen later this month.  My wife and I have tickets to go and are really looking forward to this.  It ought to be hysterical!

Should be fun...  I'd guess the local media has a lot of good material for a roast given all his antics.  :-X

In other news... I can't bring up tomorrow HoF vote without a plug for Bert.  After last year's 74%, he's just got to get in this year...  I hope.   :-\

Hopefully nobody gets sent to sensitivity training after this one.

Both Raines and Baines are up again this year as far as former Sox players are concerned.  I really hope that Baines makes it in.  He was always one of my favorite players in the 80's growing up and I personally think that his numbers are good enough to warrant entry.  Raines was more of a Montreal guy to me than a Sox guy.  Considering most of his best seasons came with Montreal, I wouldn't be surprised if he ended up in the Hall with an Expos hat on if he makes it in...

Hooray for Bert finally making it into the Hall.  14 years is a long wait, nice that those holdout voters finally saw all those Ks, SOs, and innings and let him into the Hall.  :)

Congrats too to Alomar - great baseball player, but kind of a prick as a person.  :-X

Interesting to see that McGuire's admission on steriods and his re-entry into the world of baseball actually caused his vote total to go down.  I sort of thought that once he owned up to his PED use, they may give him a break - I guess this year will be a penalty year for him and he'll start trending back up next year...

I still think you need to put up great career numbers AND be one of the elite at your position for multiple years.

So Alomar yes

Bert no.

Hopefully now that Bert is in Jack will finally get in next year...I'd have put Jack in before Bert

And the blackballing of drug users is going to come to a head in about 3 or 4 years when Bonds and Clemens come up...because they are both HOFers before they doped...so do you ban them over that?

Anyone have any thoughts on MLB adding another wild card team next year? Sounds like it's a done deal.

My first thought is NO. But it would make the division winner have a much bigger advantage over the wild card team than the system currently does so I like that.

Hat's off to Liriano on the no-no.  Would have been more impressive without the 5 walks, but still an accomplishment to be proud of considering he has never had a complete game up to this point.

My Yankees need to pull their collective heads out of their asses.

We suck, and I am sticking to my preseason prediction that we're going to get beaten by Boston this year, and not even get the Wild Card if we're not careful.

We are too damn old.

Boston?  Pfffffffft.  The Rays are taking that division again.

We suck

You suck?  I'll give you disappointing, I'll give you underachieving, but not 'suck'.

If you want to talk about a team that sucks, let's talk about my 14under .500 squad that is currently stinking up MLB's cellar.  Now that's a team that sucks.   :'(

If the Pirates are better than you, you probably can claim the "We suck" argument.

I have to hand it to a local guy in our collecting group though...  He sticks with the Buccos through thick and thin.  A real fan.

I know, Rob!  I was so worried we were going to lose 100 games and then BAM - a two game win streak to finish off the year - way to go Twins!!!  63-99!

Oh wait - you probably meant the Tampa stuff.   ::)
Title: Re: MLB 2011
Post by: Rob on September 29, 2011, 12:43 AM
No no, I meant the Twins.

What happened in Tampa?!  ;D

Damn that was incredible.  I haven't been that excited about Baseball since the ALCS against Boston a few years ago.

Easily the most shocking night of baseball that I have witnessed since the '86 Mets game 6 of the World Series.

Granted baseball doesn't get very exciting most of the time, but last night was epic.
Title: Re: MLB 2011
Post by: McMetal on September 29, 2011, 08:59 AM
Wow, for a guy whose two favorite teams are the Braves and the Red Sox, last night was super fun. Like getting kicked in the nuts with an iron boot...twice.

Seriously, 3-2 lead in both games in the 9th and you can't close it out?

I'm sure the Yankees were not trying to tank that game near the end there.  ::)
Title: Re: MLB 2011
Post by: Dressel Rebel on September 29, 2011, 09:18 AM

I'm sure the Yankees were not trying to tank that game near the end there.  ::)

That doesn't really make any sense because the Red Sox have been about the worst team in baseball for almost 4 weeks, their offense couldn't hit water if they fell out of a boat, and their pitchers couldn't find their way out of a wet paper bag.

Why would you want to face the Rays, who came on over the last few weeks about as strong as possible?
Title: Re: MLB 2011
Post by: GrandMoffNick on September 29, 2011, 09:24 AM
If the Yankees really tried to tank that game so they could possibly have to play the hot Rays over the floundering horrendous pitching staff that Boston currently has, well then I guess.......... I don't buy it............. They played a game that was them setting themselves up for the playoffs and lead 7 - 0 the way I'd expect. Can't believe I'm sticking up for the Yankees. Yuck.

edit---- posting at same time.... what he said.

bull****.  I hate the Yankees with all my heart, but Giaradi had every right to manage his team the way he saw fit.  If that includes resting his players, making 18,000 pitching changes a game and playing the scrubs, then so be it.  The Yankees didn't owe the Red Sox anything.  And if you think about it, the Yankees kept the Red Sox alive in the hunt by taking 3 of 4 from the Rays last week.  Without that, this penant race would have been over last week.

Did they get a little joy by keeping the Sox out of the playoffs?  Maybe, but that doesn't mean they intentionally threw games (although I do question why Texiera didn't score from second  on a clean double).  The Sox have no one to blame but themselves.  They assumed they'd be able to coast into the playoffs and it came back to bite them in the ass.  The Rays had the will, desire and guts to fight to the bitter end, the Sox were the complete opposite. The only ones pulling their weight the last month were Ellsbury, Pedroia and Papelbon (although he blew it last night).  Everyone else were a bunch of entitled prima donnas who couldn't pitch, couldn't play defense or get the big hit when needed.  They deserved everything that happened to them and deserve all the criticism they're receiving now.  Maybe this will light a fire under their asses and they'll play a complete ******* season next year, start to finish.  The difference between the Yanks and Sox is that the Yanks play for the division and the Sox play just to make the playoffs (ie, the wild card).  At least the Yanks have something to fall back back on if they falter a bit.  We all saw what happened to the Sox - another third place finish (by the so called "greatest team ever").

I can't with good conscience root for another AL East team and I don't really like Texas, so I'll be rooting for Detroit in the AL and Philly in the NL.

I had a very classy post prepared that was something to the effect of "Suck it Yankees!" but then I decided that would only potentially inflame some hurt feelings.  :P

Really though, hard to argue that the best team didn't win, IMO. Detroit showed a lot of grit too, kind of a feelgood story.

Great game between the Brewers and Diamondbacks tonight. Hats off to both clubs for a great series effort.

Anyone else think Chicago hiring Ventura with no managing/coaching experience as their manager is weird?

Though not as crazy as to hear they thought about having Konerko be a manager/player. Didn't think I'd ever hear of that again.

I turned it off after it was 7-4 in the eighth.  ::)

STL has consistently choked so hard in this series there didn't seem to be any point to keep watching.

I have to say I'm sorry I missed it. Sounded like an epic collapse.

It was simply unreal.  This entire ride for the Cardinals this year has been like something out of a movie like "The Natural."  They last led the NL Central July 25 and after a terrible stretch, found themselves trailing the Braves by 10½ games... then all of a sudden started playing like a team, while the Braves fell apart and got into the playoffs on the last day of the season.  Underdogs against the Phillies and Brewers, and managed to get by... seems like this team plays its best when their back is against the wall.  Can't wait for tonight, but either way what a season.  If they lose, I'll be happy for Nolan Ryan at least.

Yeah, I liked the nod too.

And Kirby Puckett was my favorite player.  One of these days I need to pull out my card collection that was dedicated to just his cards.  I still remember how I thought his 1984 Fleer Update card was the greatest piece of paper ever printed, lol.  I still have it.  It means a lot to me, my dad traded some of his cards from when he was a kid to get that for me.

I still remember taking **** in 1987 for being happy when the Twins won against my hometown Cardinals.  Only time I ever found myself pulling for the "other" team.

Almost too hard to believe!  I feel bad for the Rangers fans but they have a ton to be proud of their team for.  It just felt like some sort of destiny for the Cardinals... living in STL, I know I am biased, but holy crap, this whole run was just one for the ages!

Lots of things happening in MLB today...

- Houston Astros sold and moving to the AL West, which will cause some sort of re-alignment of the schedule including interleague play every day to make the schedule balance out

- Owners approved two more wild-card teams to make the playoffs (10 teams out of 30 now), but details on how that works are still pending apparently (best guess is that the two wild card teams, team 5 & team 4, play a short series with the winner playing team 1)

I'm normally against pitchers winning the MVP award, but I think they got it right with Verlander this year. Congrats Justin.

P.S. Detroit how about our whole starting rotation (the Twins' that is) for Verlander?

Well, I'm officially a Marlins 'one-player-fan' now that Buehrle's left the White Sox to go join Ozzie down in Miami.  Sucks to see him go; he was by far my favorite player on the team for the last 12 years.  He was never a lights out pitcher but he was always a consistent 10+ win guy in the rotation.  I still have his perfect game on my DVR...

And now it looks to be official... Pujols Leaves St. Louis (http://www.nytimes.com/2011/12/09/sports/baseball/angels-lure-pujols-with-10-year-contract.html).

The general feeling by the fans around here for the past month is that a 10-year contract makes stupid business sense, and this morning people actually seem relieved that the Cardinals didn't commit to a contract like that.

This seems like it could shift the power balance in baseball for at least a few years, or at least boost the Angels lineup for a while.  Later on when his body gives out he can also DH some... but really, I'm damn glad that we didn't keep him for that amount of money, or that long.  Nobody's worth that.
Title: Re: MLB 2011

Pujols is pretty much the only non MN Twin I root for. I wanted to see him stay in St. Louis, BUT can't blame a team for not wanting to pay someone $20 plus million a year when they are in their 40s. Guess now I see him play more.

I think the move to the AL is a good, one for him.  Like Chewie said, being in the line up as a DH will extend his career.

If not for his untimely death in a plane crash, the Yankees would have done the same thing with Thurman Munson.

Always nice when a reigning MVP tests positive for PED.   ::)

I wonder what his "extenuating circumstances" are that makes him come out saying the test is bogus - will it be "I didn't know what they gave me" or "it came from a doctor for an unrelated medical condition"?

Lots of incentive for Prince Fielder to come back knowing they'll likely be without Braun for 50 games. :P
