Do You Collect the Same Characters in Multiple Lines?
« on: September 1, 2025, 03:56 PM »
Obviously, this could apply to Star Wars as well, or any number of the “other” lines we discuss here…but as I’ve been going through my collection I’ve noticed how often this has occurred for me. Multiple He-Man and Company, multiple Optimus Primes, and multiple sets of Ninja Turtles, and on and on. Granted, a lot of these are very different stylistically, but it makes me wonder why I would ever need all of these unless it like my focus collection. I’m torn between just keeping them or picking my most ideal version and clearing many or all of the others out. Long story short, do any of you do this or do you try to stick to one? Not to mention different scales…

Once upon a time, I did this with DC.  So many Batman/Flash/GLC figures in Mini-Mate, 3" PVC, 3.75" DC Direct, 3.75" Mattel DC, 3.75" GL Movie, 5" JLA/TJ, 5" Super Powers, 6" Mattel, 7" DC Direct.  Lots of different lines, lots of different scales.

When DC wiped out the Silver Age continuity and origin stories and rebooted with the new 52 and all that, my interest died.  The stories got too far from what I enjoyed (they erased Wally West!  Too much Damian Wayne!  WTF did they do to the GLC?)  I just lost interest in the new stories they wanted to tell.  I stopped buying the comics and then stopped buying the figures.

Almost all of my DC/GL stuff is gone now with the exception of a "classic" 3.75" scale Hal Jordan and my Power Ring/Battery (still love that thing).  I still have some 7" figures and some other 3.75", but they've been stored in baggies, off-display, and destined for the "for sale" bin for a while now.

Even within Star Wars, I've been asking myself "how many Darth Vaders is too many?"  I've been culling older versions for a while now, really trying to stick with "if I can't display it, I don't need it".  When I get a new Vader/etc, I try to think if I can retire an older sculpt in its place and make some room/money so the cycle of rebuying can continue.  :P

Thank you so much for your reply, I really appreciate it. I have much the same attitude of “if it isn’t displayed, or stuck in a tote, why do I need this?” I’ve been consistently selling things off for the last 5 plus years, but as you said more stuff always comes in. I’m sometimes hesitant to sell some things, because I have had some regrets in the past, but at the same time the older I get the less I want to have SO MUCH stuff. That is why I’m grappling with some of these types of questions.

I have a Captain America nook in my Marvel stuff.   Cap has been my favorite Marvel character since I started reading books and I have a nice display of 3-3/4”, 6” and some here and there other fun stuff

I kind have a mini display of Vader and Yoda stuff but nothing like my Cap area
