Post by: Matt on October 22, 2008, 03:43 PM
LUCASARTS AND BIOWARE REVEAL STAR WARS: THE OLD REPUBLIC (http://www.swtor.com/news/article/press-release-001)

Quote
OCTOBER 21, SAN FRANCISCO – LucasArts and BioWare™, a division of Electronic Arts Inc. (NASDAQ: ERTS), today announced the development of Star Wars®: The Old Republic™, a story-driven massively multiplayer online PC game set in the timeframe of the Star Wars®: Knights of the Old Republic™ franchise. Star Wars: The Old Republic, being developed and published by BioWare and LucasArts, represents an innovative approach to interactive entertainment, featuring immersive storytelling, dynamic combat and intelligent companion characters.

In Star Wars: The Old Republic, players will explore an age thousands of years before the rise of Darth Vader when war between the Old Republic and the Sith Empire divides the galaxy. Players can choose to play as Jedi, Sith, or a variety of other classic Star Wars roles, defining their personal story and determining their path down the light or dark side of the Force. Along the way, players will befriend courageous companions who will fight at their side or possibly betray them, based on the players’ actions. Players can also choose to team up with friends to battle enemies and overcome incredible challenges using dynamic Star Wars combat.

"Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic is the most critically acclaimed Star Wars game in LucasArts history and a preeminent example of our company’s interactive storytelling heritage," said Darrell Rodriguez, President of LucasArts. "For a long time, we’ve long wanted to return to the franchise in a grand way, and we felt that the best setting for it was an online world that would allow millions of people to participate in the experience together. We knew that the developer capable of working with us to deliver an engrossing story with a fully-realized online world was BioWare."

"Traditionally, massively multiplayer online games have been about three basic gameplay pillars - combat, exploration and character progression," said Dr. Ray Muzyka, Co-Founder and General Manager/CEO of BioWare and General Manager/Vice President of Electronic Arts Inc., "In Star Wars: The Old Republic, we’re fusing BioWare’s heritage of critically-acclaimed storytelling with the amazing pedigree of Lucasfilm and LucasArts, and adding a brand-new fourth pillar to the equation – story. At the same time, we will still deliver all the fun features and activities that fans have come to expect in a AAA massively multiplayer online game. To top it all off, Star Wars: The Old Republic is set in a very exciting, dynamic period in the Star Wars universe."

Added Dr. Greg Zeschuk, Co-Founder and Vice President Development Operations, BioWare and Vice President, Electronic Arts Inc., "Star Wars: The Old Republic is set roughly 300 years after the events of Knights of the Old Republic, a timeframe that is completely unexplored in the lore. BioWare has been able to add to the Star Wars history in developing the game’s story and has created an overarching narrative that players can enjoy, regardless of their play style. Our goal is to offer players an emotionally rewarding experience that combines the traditional elements of MMO gameplay with innovations in story and character development."

Additional details on Star Wars: The Old Republic features, gameplay and release date will be announced at a later time. For more information about Star Wars: The Old Republic and to sign up for future product updates, please visit www.StarWarsTheOldRepublic.com.

What happen to Star Wars Galaxies?

It sucked, and was poorly run/dismal from the start. :)  I think Galaxies hasn't been anything in the realm of a "hit" to LA.

This sounds interesting, and they picked an era where Jedi were running rampant because that means they don't have that OT "limitation" of only so many Jedi...  Makes sense, and it's still STar Wars, but really I've never gotten the appeal of these games that much.  I guess I just figure they take too much time to "get into".

Is this not coming to PS3 or xBox?  I could never get KOTOR to work on my PC a couple years ago.

I'm assuming not, as this is an MMORPG ala World of Warcraft and things, which I don't think work on consoles very well at all.

You should get KOTOR for X-Box if you haven't already iFett.  Outstanding game.  So fun to immerse yourself into it.  I've still not played KOTOR2 but am looking forward to it since we got a Nihilus figure.  I'm just lazy about gaming.

Oh I'm very lazy on gaming too.  Been playing Resident Evil 4 on and off again for the past 2 months (I only get around to playing on Sundays for a couple hours)  Hell - I still have my Dreamcast and N64 hooked up even though I haven't played them in years.  I need to toss those puppies.

I tried to pick up a used Xbox a few months ago when Game Crazy was running a deal with the console and three used games for $60.  Thought it was a pretty good deal as I only wanted the system for KOTOR 1 & 2, and maybe Halo 2 but all of the employees and other customers started laughing at me and told me not to buy because they claimed the system and those games are just pure trash.

I've heard totally different about those games from several people since then, so I have to find the time to track one down even though they're out of stock and Gamestop isn't selling them out of their stores anymore - only online apparently.   :-\

I definitely would too. But from what I've read it is actually going to be more of a hybrid. It is going to be really interesting to see where this game goes.

iFett,  I have no clue why anyone would tell you those games and the XB are trash.  Honestly I'd say not to shop there since those people are clueless about gaming as near as I can tell.  KOTOR was award winning...  KOTOR2 is supposedly more of the same, nothing really "new" to it, and I'm ok with that.  I am entertained by going to new planets and such, so I wouldn't pay attention to what those people were saying.  HALO2 is ok... I'm not a huge HALO fanfor anything but online gaming though, but that's me.  They're good games by most people's account but I find them most entertaining for multiplayer.

Don't worry Ryan, like I said I'm mostly into seeing new vehicles, new locations, architecture.  Lame?  Maybe, but it's a customizing thing in mymind I think, haha.

I love my XB to the point I didn't even sell it.  I had the see-through-green HALO edition box and I adore it still.  My 360 gets most of my attention of course, but I still bust out the old XB too for some Brother's in Arms, or whatnot.  Piss on that store, whatever it is.

I'm still trying to get my friggin' live working on my XB.  I'm hoping to have it for summer time goofing off with the kids and **** talking on Chinese 12 year olds at 3 a.m., haha.

I think that POV may depend on whether or not you've got a PS3 or X-Box 360.  Those platforms have taken gaming to a new level.  But there are still a good number of casual gamers out there that still have not taken the next gen console plunge.  They've simply been priced out of the market.  That's one of the reasons why Sony is STILL releasing PS-2 titles.  Just look at The Force Unleashed.  That was even released as a PS-2 title in addition to PS-3 and X-Box 360.

That being said, I think KOTOR 2 is cool.  However, I think it doesn't break a lot of new ground that hadn't been covered in the first KOTOR.

I think all the issues people have with KOTOR II is that is wasn't finished when sent out for sale.  If they had actually finished the game, people would still be raving about it!

I saw this snipet inside an article on Yahoo this afternoon.  The article as about the discrepancies between video games and hollywood projects.

Quote
LucasArts put in the time for its new release, "Star Wars: The Old Republic," a game it is developing with Canadian outfit BioWare for games giant Electronic Arts.

"Star Wars"-based games have gotten mixed reviews in the past, but the buzz has been strong for "The Old Republic." LucasArts and BioWare have spent years designing the title, which will be a massively multiplayer online game similar to "World of Warcraft" -- a game intended to be played online by thousands of people simultaneously.

PC Gamer U.K. called "The Old Republic" "a credible 'World of Warcraft' killer," and the lineups to see the demo at gamescom have been longer than those at most movie premieres.

We have a lot to live up to with this game, which is why we've spent so much time and money on it," [Jake] Meri said [a producer at LucasArts]. "It will be the first fully voiced MMO game in the world. Voicing this game has been the most ambitions voiceover project ever -- we have thousands of characters speaking more than 200,000 lines of dialogue."

That sounds like a lot of dialogue!

Here's a link to the whole article (http://videogames.yahoo.com/events/plugged-in/hollywood-playing-catch-up-with-videogames/1346604)

I guess the beta for this has opened up or has been for some time now.  I started the enrollment/application process but put it on hold until I can complete the application at home because it scans your computer as part of the application process so that Bioware knows what you are running on.

This would be really cool to get in on.   8)

I'm actually tempted to play TOR...  The trailers are really sucking me in, all the news tidbits...  The era it's set in as well.  It's really just a game ripe with possibilities for greatness.  I've never played an MMORPG, but I think they can be fun from what I've watched of the boy's playing WoW, and I think a ground-up SW game may even have more potential since they can learn from WoW's mistakes.  The era's a great one too, for gaming, since you're not hampered by the constraints of the OT which is a lot of what Galaxies ran into.

And that Republic Trooper?  I wish there were figures for this game...  That guy's f'n badass!  Trying to knife a sith lord while he's zapping the crap out of you?  Come on!  That guy would make an insanely cool figure.  Hell, everything in every trailer and the online comic would make great figures.   :-\

when this launches I would say it is an easy bet / easy money Hasbro will be making figures.

this game is going to be huge.  I am so confident this game is gonna rock I bought stock in EA a few months back.  no joke.  An mmorpp + SW + Bioware = instant success in my book.  I havent seen a Bioware product I haven't liked yet - and this screams awesome.

I think this game will do well, but I seriously think they should have worked out a way to get this game running on the XBox 360. And if a keyboard and mouse is an issue, work with Microsoft and one of their partners to finally develop a "official" wireless keyboard and mouse for the XBox 360. Once that's available there should really be no issues.

I am asking because I don't know - but I would think there would be issues with a game of this magnitude working on a system.  Wouldn't the constant updates mmoprg's require be an issue on a console system?

That might not be the right reason why it doesn't go console - but I guess we a similar question that should/could be asked is why hasn't a game like WoW gone to consoles?

Title: Re: Star Wars: The Old Republic
Post by: Jesse James on June 24, 2010, 07:07 PM
That's part of it...  MMORPG's, to stay relevant, update fairly constantly without having to reboot the entire shebang...  That's much harder to accomplish on an XBox I think, than on a PC.  The keyboard/mouse thing is another issue, though I don't know how hard it'd be to make that work on an X-Box or not?   ???  I think they may garner more interest via consoles, but at the same time the current format seems to garner plenty of interest and revenue on its own...  May even be cheaper, I don't know.  *shrugs*

There's something about the constant need to play that may impact that as well...  MMORPG's take time.  X-Box's don't "go with you", but I know lots of folks who take their laptops with them just to do their routine stuff for their characters on WoW, even taking it on vacation with them.  The Consoles cannot do that easily of course.

Reading the article you found it seems like there are three issues:

1) The ability to use a keyboard & mouse vs. gamepad type controller - as I stated in my post, it seems really foolish that a wireless keyboard and mouse aren't available for the XBox 360, someone looking to bring an MMO to the Xbox that's also on the PC should push MSFT to partner up with a peripheral vendor to make them a reality.

2) Hard disk space - really is that even an issue? I have an XBox 360 Elite and I have more than enough space for a 20GB game. Again, if the choice was buying a $100 keyboard/mouse package and upgrading your HD on your XBox for another $100 or so vs. buying a $2000 gaming computer, what makes more economical sense here?

3) Development cycles/patching - I get told I need to download updates all the time over XBox Live - why would getting updates to the MMO be any different? As far as development, I would think that since the XBox architecture is based on the MSFT ActiveX architecture, porting a PC game to an XBox 360 game would be pretty easy and if it's not, MSFT should make it more easy.

I guess I may sound like "sour grapes" but the "Old Republic" franchise was built by XBox players. The first Knights of the Old Republic game was on the XBox for a while before it even made it to the PC and the time it took to bring it to the PC was primarily to update the game to work with a keyboard interface. The reward for the patient PC gamers was a spacestation level. And what about the XBox fans who supported the game all along? Oh yeah, that's right, we could download that level and add it to my own KotOR experience. So to me the "downloads/updates" issue is b.s.

If they were finally giving us the third act of the Knights of the Old Republic story that was set up by the second game then I would be slightly less miffed by the move to an MMO, but knowing that the development of this game came out of the initial talks for KotOR III kinda stings a bit too much.

The good news is I'm 100% positive you can buy a computer that will run TOR for $600 or so, at best I'd guess.  Only because I'm looking at new PC's right now, and they're really cheap compared to the last time I bought a new PC...  Even the high-end stuff from a private seller I've looked at wouldn't cost me $2000 unless I was taking the tip-top technology on the market and maxing out RAM, HD, etc.

Computers are basically cheap, at least compared to the good old days when you DID need a super system to run games (oh the old X-Wing days, how I long for quality games like that!).

So having a PC to run it is pretty affordable to the vast majority anyway...  I think the mouse/keyboard thing seems pretty simple to fix though on an X-Box, so that's a lame excuse it seems.

Still, like I said, you can't take the XB with you really...  And those games really take a lot of time I guess.   :-\  Almost everyone I know who plays WoW does so on a laptop so they can take it to watch TV while they play, or even on vacation...  That's, to me anway, a huge factor.

The XB's Harddrive I can see being an issue too, if you store a lot on your XB's HD.  That's relative though...  I don't, but I know people with practically full HD's or have had to buy an extra.  That all depends on the gamer then I guess.

I don't know what kind of memory needs are there for saved characters too and things.  People can make a lot of characters on one account though I guess, or something like that.  So there's that to consider I guess.  *shrugs*

For me, if it played well on the XB360 I'd play there I'm sure, but as it stands I'm just factoring it in while I look at new PC's and decide what I'm going to do.  Even the base systems I looked at should run the game though, ironically.

I guess I just have too much "old school thinking" stuck in my head. The last time I bought I high-end computer with a high-end video card the damn thing cost me almost $2K and by today's standards it's a piece of junk.

Like you said, it really does depend on the type of gamer you are. I'm not a hard core gamer by any stretch of the imagination. I have the XBox and that's it. I mostly get Star Wars games, but because I love BioWare's stuff I also have the Mass Effect games (which are fantastic). Beyond that, the only other XBox 360 game I have is Red Alert 3 and the two Command & Conquer 3 games, and there again, I don't have a PC good enough to run the PC version, but I had a great time playing them on my console.

Title: Re: Star Wars: The Old Republic
Post by: Jesse James on June 24, 2010, 09:46 PM
Yeah I was that way too till my PC started giving me some trouble this last year or so...  I've had mine since 1998, upgraded now and then but never replaced.  I was going into getting a new one thinking $1000 minimum for a decent one...  I'd say you could get a VERY high-end gaming machine for $1000, and they won't make TOR to the high-end because of needing to sell the game.

I figure at best I may need the base system plus a slightly better graphics card, which is like $100 to $200 tops by what I've seen (of course the best is more).  So that's like $600 for a PC custom built according to what I've been looking at, and if you bought one at BB you'd probably get one right out of the gate that would play it.

I was amazed how almost disposable PC's have become.  It's like TV's are (or at least were anyway).  Even Laptops seem cheap.  I mean, last I even looked at one of those it was so far out of my price range that I didn't even consider it.

I wouldn't worry about it too much, if you feel like buying a new PC to game...  It's a LOT less than I had imagined it, that's for sure.  :)  Made me feel very old, and made my computer look very lame as well, haha.

The Old Republic has become a weird saga...

Insiders with Lucasarts and things are saying the game's gone overbudget by staggering ammounts (like Waterworld type money here), and that it's basically being passed off to get completed.  I'm wondering if it's going to actually live up to the hype that's swirling about it.

I want it to succeed.  I have no real reason not to,a nd I'd kinda dig playing it if I didn't have so much going on already.

But part of me thinks it's maybe going to be not quite as successful as it was automatically assumed it would be.  Could we be facing Galaxies 2?  I don't know.

I like the concept, I hope it survives and thrives.  Some news coming out downplays the rumors, some of it supports them a little though as well.  I'm curious how this is going to all play out.

my thoughts plus some quotes from an article I found:

Quote
In January, EA CEO John Riccitiello said the company had a "major new MMO" planned for release in spring 2011, which was presumed to be The Old Republic and jibes with the figure released by Brown. Sadly, this means that the game won't be released in early 2011 as many fans had anticipated, but it makes perfect sense considering that BioWare only recently opened applications for further testing this week.

One of my buddies that I met through WoW (I used to play for a long time) just got invited to this testing - I will post info as I hear it if there is any to post.  I guess he got the invite just after he re-subscribed to WoW (we all burned out on the game about 2 years ago but he wanted to check out the new expansion).  He wishes he didn't subscribe back to WoW so soon...

Quote
Depending on the MMO, the start of closed, but public beta testing is an indication that a game is still a good 3-6 months or longer from the point where it'll be ready for release. For example, World of Warcraft's closed beta test ran for about 7 months.

This, to me, is par the course for a successful MMORPG.  The main reason WoW, imo, is as successful as it is, is because the developers do not put out anything until they feel it is polished.  Sure they have to patch things all the time to fix little quirks - but by all comparative means their product is polished compared to any other MMORPG coming to market.  Anyone ever play Anarchy Online, Age of Conan, or Warhammer?  When they came out they were turds and because of it they were left in the dust as turds.

Bioware, based on all of their games I have played - especially recent ones, does not release unplayable turds.  Bioware releases a polished product.  If a polished product takes another 6-7 months to make it successful (WoW killer) then that is what it needs to be.

Quote
Star Wars: The Old Republic has been compared to World of Warcraft in scope, so it'll probably need just as much time. The game is EA's most expensive project ever and rumored to have cost over $300 million, so the publisher is likely not releasing this one until it's fully baked and ready to earn some of that money back.

basically stating the same as I wrote.

And on a final note - a push back, in this situation is good.  If this game were to come out to soon, even if polished as polished could be, it would be contending with a newly released, world changing,WoW expansion - that would probably be a fight no game in the same genre could win.

Like say... the opposite of how they handled Star Wars Galaxies?  That game was launched buggy as hell in order to meet the LFL launch timeline.  By the time they finished "balancing" SWG, it was a completely different game from launch with completely different playable characters/professions (RIP Creature Handler :().  SWG still leaves a bad taste in my mouth and I haven't touched it in over 5 years.

If it takes them an extra 6-7 months, hell even an extra 12 months at this point to give me a fantastic, polished final product, I am willing to wait.

I never played that one, and I also never heard anything good about it.  That reasoning right there, the LFL timeline, could be part of the reason why now, from what I have read, EA now has full handling of this game as per a new contract - to me thats a good thing.

That says a lot because Lucasarts put out some real **** once they went downhill as a company.

Holy ****, another new cinematic trailer from The Old Republic.   :'(

Even if you DON'T care about the game, or the era, look at these trailers!  They're better than the prequals and they're only like 5 minutes long.  They're graphically insane, they're full of everything that makes Star Wars great, and crammed into that short period of time, and they're just flat out cool.

This game's hype had better not sink it.  It's being touted by some as the game to topple Warcraft, which isn't any small feat, but even I'm tempted to play this, at this point.  This era is maybe what Star Wars needs the most.

Hasbro has to make figures.  Oh please, oh please, oh please.  I'd buy Republic troopers in a heartbeat.  They're nothing but pure badass.

Haven't been able to check out the new cinematic trailer just yet.  But there's a new gameplay trailer from E3 (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ladPZqW8-HQ) that came out a few days ago, and it looks remarkably better than some of the early gameplay demos.

I have a group of 3 other people who are going to play with me.

We are going to be in the Sith Empire, and probably join a bigger guild on a PVP server.

These cinematic trailers are amazing, and these characters are fantastic. alot of backstory already to alot of them.

Darth Malgeus, Satale Shan, Shae viszla, Ven Zallow

I have been following this game since it was a rumor in 2007, I am very excited that we are coming into the home stretch of this game

Once we get a release date, i will be happy

Jim

The same could be said for Darth Malak (original KOTOR)...the only difference between Malak and Maglus really was the color of their uniforms.  Malak was a red/orange color.

To be fair to the game developers, TOR is trying to give fans a Star Wars experience they recognize completely...  Nothing so outlandishly EU that it is too foreign to the casual Star Wars fan, and thus there's a lot of things that will be very OT and PT in their looks, design, function, etc.

I get that need...  The game really demands it because it's catering to not just SW fans, but a whole world of MMORP'ers who may not be that hardcore into Star Wars that they'll be able to get into a completely unique and new set of worlds, characters, designs, etc.

I'd like to see a little more KOTOR in TOR myself though.  Chromey Sith Troopers especially.

The trailers look awesome for this...unfortunately it's going to be a glorified chat room.

I really wish they could give us a continuation of the KOTOR series. Especially since not everyone games on a PC. Plus, online gaming is kind of lame. The story just isn't there, and it takes you completely out of the experience when you hear a badass looking character speaking with the voice of a kid who's balls haven't dropped. I'd rather have a solid, offline story. I have a feeling TOR is going to be a lot of these guys (https://forums.playfire.com/_proxy/?url=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.philoscifi.com%2Fwp-content%2Fuploads%2F2009%2F05%2Fmake-love-not-warcraft.jpg&hmac=18a6fc2a691dcd0f54f31c0f189e55a5) doing this (http://www.southparkstudios.com/clips/155263/inside-the-world-of-warcraft)...

That's GG's statue of Malgus, right? Saw some close up pics of it and man, am I disappointed. Well, not just after seeing the close ups, but the statue just is disappointing for me. He looks way too slick and the headsculpt looks just weird. The wrinkles look way off and the Sith (read: Goth) make up on the eyes is too thick.

Any of you follow Sithfire's work? If not, check out his version so far of Malgus over here (http://sithfire.blogspot.com/search?updated-max=2011-08-26T21%3A23%3A00-04%3A00&max-results=7) (scroll way down and you'll see him). And that's 4" of detailed madness.... Imho much better than the statue.

On the game: huge pass for me, because I am so not into MMORPGS (did I spell that right?). The trailers though. Absolutely breathtakingly beautiful. It's what TCW should've been. Not that I hate TCW, I watch every episode, but still.

I do have confidence in the whole LA/Bioware collaboration though. It should and hopefully will work. It's just not my type of game.

As for the look and feel: yeah it's all about recognition for the masses. I like my Old Republic really old and obscure. Like Tales of the Jedi. That's what the Old Republic is for me.

Played it last night and it was a blast.  I dont know what all I can and cannot talk about since I didn't read through the agreement word for word.  But I will say this, the game is very polished and runs smooth from what I have seen so far.  My fps rate seemed very good overall and I didn't feel there was a latency issue at all.  All this happening in a very crowded "newb" zone.  Looking forward to some more fun tonight!  ;D

LucasArts was demoing TOR at NY Comic Con today.  They must have had about 40 gaming stations set up inside the booth, but there was still a considerable line to get in and try out the game.  There's also a HUGE Darth Malgus life-size maquette standing guard at the booth.

A friend of mine is also currently beta testing the game.  His initial reaction?  "It's that good."  I think he couldn't tear himself away from the game to elaborate much more.  But the gameplay I was able to see on the monitors at the Lucas Arts booth looked pretty amazing.

Jim was in on the last Betas they did, and he was sharing some thoughts.  It sounds good.  I'm still holding out though to make sure it takes off and is shown true support, and that it will challenge the king of the MMORPG's before I'd commit to an expensive game purchase + subscription fee.

Every video looks like more fun though.

Apparently Lucas Arts is taking the hacking of Sony's Playstation network very seriously.  They've put out this statement today (http://www.swtor.com/news/news-article/20111107) regarding network security and the protection of SWTOR personal user information.

Quote
As we prepare to launch Star Wars™: The Old Republic™, we want to ensure that your account and personal information are as secure as possible. To that end, we have begun implementing new security features within StarWarsTheOldRepublic.com that are designed to protect you. This process includes a refresh of our password security requirements. To make sure that all accounts comply with our new security measures, members of the Star Wars: The Old Republic community who created accounts on StarWarsTheOldRepublic.com on or before October 21st, 2011 will be required to reset their password in order to meet with these new standards. Those members who created an account after October 21st, 2011 will not receive an email and do not need to update their passwords.

Over the next few weeks, we will be sending out emails to everyone who created an account on or before October 21st, 2011 to notify them that their password must be reset. You do not need to take any action prior to receiving an email.

When you create your new password, ensure that it meets the following criteria: the password must be 8-16 characters long and use at least one uppercase letter, one lowercase letter and one number. The more variety that you use in your password, the stronger your password will be.

Just like any other user account you have, changing your The Old Republic password on a regular basis is one of the simple measures you can take to protect your personal information. Another way to ensure a secure account is to get the official custom branded Security Authentication Key, available in the Star Wars: The Old Republic Collector’s Edition. The Collector’s Edition is still available in limited quantities at select retailers. Watch for more information on other ways to obtain The Old Republic Security Key soon!

Your Star Wars: The Old Republic account credentials are linked to EA.com and Origin.com, so your new password will be applied across all three websites. If you have any difficulties in updating your password, please contact our Customer Service team who’ll be happy to assist you.

Well, I did not get to play as much as I wanted (with 4 kids free time is limited :P), but I did get in a nice 3-hour chunk straight on Saturday night and it was fun, fun, fun.  Probably played a good 5 hours over the course of the weekend.   :)

I am definitely IN for the game now.  The Beta test was a nice chance to get in there and demo the game - feels like everything SWGalaxies should have been - you get the Republic/Empire type of feel but in a timeline that makes sense to have Jedi and Sith all over. ;)

btw, Bioware has lifted the NDA on this game so speak freely!

I played pretty decent amount this 2nd round of BETA that I was in.  I don't recall during the first BETA choosing the server I played on but perhaps I did.  I didn't realize it until the weekend was over that I probably could have hunt down my lvl 17 Sith Marauder to continue playing, but I would have had to search through a VERY long list of servers.  So long and short I was not that sad that I missed out him - though seeing new content on would have been nice (he had a spaceship for travel which I gained at lvl 17 and I was on the third planet).

So I re-rolled a Bounty Hunter.  Lvls 1-8 I didnt know where the skills trainer was so I just kept on plugging away with the few skills I had - and it was still easy.  When I finally found the skills trader (which I may have missed because my son and his friend were distracting me during the early lvls) I had a bunch of skills to train - and then I started ripping NPCs up.  At lvl 10 I believe it was I picked my specialization and I went with the damage class bounty hunter (not the tank) and gained some more new skills and started lvling up my tree.  Again more ownage.

I am not the best pvper in the world but it is the only type of server I will play on - thats the point of the game right?  While I didnt experience any real world pvp I did do some arenas at lvl 14-15 and I was able to do some ownage when I was running around with a decently organized group - sometimes I got around 30 or so kills in a round.  One downside to pvping was the queue times were kinda long - but this may have been an issue because it was just BETA and it will be better once the game goes live.

I also really like the companion feature.  My Bounty Hunter companion was a chick named Mako.  I really like how you can send her on missions to lvl up your trade skills - she would also come back with rare mods for my armor and weapons from time to time.  I even got a purple "ultra rare"? item mod one time.  Another nice thing is you can send them to town to sell all of your vendor fodder.

So I enjoyed my Bounty Hunter more than my Marauder.  The story line to both was great but I think the Bounty Hunter might match my play style more.

any questions?  ask away

ps - I heard Imperial Agents are really fun.  I might have to give them a whirl if I end up purchasing the game.  Right now I have a lot of time/money constraints and those constraints are not very MMO friendly.

So...  what's the verdict? :)

I've not really gotten into this because, well, the kids are getting it and I figure they'll just let me make a character and goof around with it to see if I want to go full bore into this.

What's the deal though?  Where are you guys at with this?  How many of you are just coming up for air right now for the first time?  Oh that's right, it's only 2 hours in, and that's just not nearly enough time for everyone's eyes to be completely bloodshot.

Right now,
I am a level 26 Sith Warrior Marauder on the PVP server Veela.

So far, This game is amazing. the story, the atmosphere of it all, is Star Wars. It is a blast to play and the Collectors edition rocks, the Malgus Statue by Gentle Giant is outstanding. The book that came with the Collectors edition is awesome too, gives a background to the timeframe we are in, so for people who are jumping in, you get a nice little crash course.

This looks to be a solid property to get some awesome toys from too.

I made a character on the kid's computer and played for a little bit...  Fun, but I'm like you smash in that I don't know that I have the time and I certainly don't have the desire for another bill, haha.  It's $15 a month, but out of all the other subscriptions I have for things like Xbox Live, Sirius, the rags I read, and other stuff...  eh.

I'd kinda dig trying it out on my laptop too, to see if it'll work smoothly on my machine.  It's a little choppy on the kid's laptop.  If it ran like that on mine I'd be much less inclined to get into it now, and instead wait till I get a new desktop that is built more for gaming.

My laptop's newer so I hope it runs well on mine, if I do decide to jump into the fun.

Shmash, the only MMORPG I've ever played was Everquest waaaaay back when I first got my PS2 hooked up to the Internet (like 10 years ago), and that was only a month long trial. I have a coworker playing, which was why I snagged the game in the first place.

Runs fine on my year old laptop, although I have it set on "low" graphic settings. Characters still look fantastic though, and the only thing I don't get to see is all the details in walls and floors. Oh no!

Anyway, I'm on the Harbinger server as a Bounty Hunter named Dralco, although I'm hoping I can get an account on a server with some JD peeps.

My gf's kid's laptop isn't running it so well, or they're on when it's really busy or something.  NOt sure which could be the case, so I'm (still) downloading and gonna see how it rolls on this laptop...  I figure if it's smooth enough on semi decent settings, I'm probably in.  If not, I'm passing till I someday get a new desktop.  My desktop is really outdated and I've needed one for years now, but just haven't taken the plunge to have a new machine built.
Title: Re: Star Wars: The Old Republic

@Diddly, heh I played that version of EQ also (I still have my copy of that PS2 version), plus, before that I played on the computer.  Then I did a little Dark Ages of Camelot, some Guild Wars, and a whole lot of WoW (I was on a top rading guild on our server before we all crash and burned of boredom/grinding).

Anyway, about SWTOR, when I did the BETA it was on my desktop which I am pretty sure I built it around 2 years ago and I made it near top of the line at the time - the game always ran smooth as silk for me during BETA.  I am pretty sure this game does not require the most demanding of CPU requirements, but it also delivers.

The game is really easy to get the hang of, just remember to go find your trainers and train up when you lvl.  I had no clue where the BH trainer was when I did the beta and I got to like lvl 12 with ease using like only 3 skills or something before I finally found him (I must not have been paying attention somewhere).

The only thing holding me back is time and money, and my weight (235-240)...  lol!  I am trying to get more active and this would do the exact opposite...

I played for about an hour last night...  On low settings (and my PC is almost exactly one year old) it still was slightly choppy till I got to a large building with lots of activity where it got insanely choppy.  I set everything to the lowest settings and it's running smoother.  Kind of disappointed in that, but it is running smoothly at the lowest settings which is good.

I posted this on the JD facebook page yesterday but thought I would throw it down here, I picked up the CE of this game for $30 from K-mart's website yesterday.  I believe Newegg was selling it for this price too.  The game price is dropping through the floor because the game is going "free to play to lvl 50" in the fall.  I guess people still wanting to play the game still have to purchase the game, but then it goes F2P.

All this is happening because subscribers has dipped below 1 million.

And I seriously purchased stock in EA because of this game....   :'(

If anyone is still wanting to nab the CE of this game I would recommend keeping a watchful eye out - these things start to pop up frequently all around the web.  I would suspect Amazon will sell it at this price soon-ish.

I've never played an MMO - hell I still have probably 20 PS3 games to get through, but might keep my eye out for this at $30

If you don't want the fancy "collector edition" packaging/goodies, you can get the game alone for $15 (Best Buy) (http://www.bestbuy.com/site/Star+Wars%3A+The+Old+Republic+-+Windows/3031171.p;jsessionid=787DF353850216AF920800E26FE529CD.bbolsp-app06-23?id=1218373620959&skuId=3031171&st=old republic&lp=1&cp=1) or less, just $13 at Kmart (http://www.kmart.com/electronic-arts-star-wars-old-republic/p-018W004236553001P?prdNo=2&blockNo=2&blockType=L2).

I picked up the basic game on sale for just $5 at Best Buy a few weeks ago...

That's not bad either, but I'll probably never get around to playing the game so packaging and goodies for me please - if I can find... :)

Picked up the last CE at The Kmart.  Cashier lady didn't want to sell it to me because the box was too big for $30 and she also wanted to open it up to make sure there were no hidden surprises in there?  WTF ?  Anyways....Nice set   8)

Thanks for chiming in there when you did Smash!

I ended up dropping my subscription a few weeks ago. Hadn't played since the beginning of the summer and news about everything going free was basically my excuse to stop paying. The game (and MMORPGs in general) just wasn't for me anyway.

anyone currently playing this?  I have been on and off for just about a month now.  When I started I was surprised to find one of my characters I made during BETA staying alive and well on my account - it was a rebel smuggler.  Anyway, something just wasnt fun about playing him so I made one of each of the other characters.

I have been playing an Assaj Ventress look alike sith witch type player and I love playing as this type of character.  I am spec'd for max dmg but often play the role of the healer for grouping.  I am currently lvl 31 I believe and I should be leaving Tatooine for Alderaan pretty soon.

Anyway, I am having fun with it for the time being.  I don't know how long term I will be a subscriber - probably until I ding 50 at least I am thinking.

oh and PS - Bioware announced a new, pay for expansion coming "Spring 2013":  http://www.swtor.com/rothc?intcmp=sor_bwa-mkt-t-us-hp-013

preorder available now  ;)

I have a character, but haven't been in since my cat passed away.  Just didn't have the energy to devote to it since then for some reason.

I am now 42 and chillin on Hoth  ;D

Actually I think I am done on Hoth now and about to jump to light-speed to my next planet.

Still not in a guild, and I still haven't ran ANY flashpoints!  I regret the no Flashpoints part, but it is kinda easy to do since there are SOOOOOO many quests to keep you moving from planet to planet with no pointless grinding in between.  Plus I have been in a few groups with terrible players, thus discouraging me to actively look even more.

I finished the HK-51 companion quest on Monday and purchased him to use as a Legacy unlock for my lvl 15 Vanguard Trooper.  Supposedly HK-51 makes leveling easy-peasy.

I logged in briefly yesterday to buy HK gear from the trade network (he comes equipped with lvl 50 gear, but unfortunately he cannot use it until he hits lvl 50!   :(.  Perhaps tonight or tomorrow I will be able to give him a trial run.

and I think I am done with this game.  Just too much of the same thing over and over again.  I think what really put the nail in the coffin for me was end game gearing though.  It is way too difficult and confusing and is far too much of a grind.

I enjoyed end game gearing when it was like it was back when I played WoW - run this dungeon raid, kill this boss, pray something you wanted dropped, and cross your fingers that you would win the roll if someone else wanted it.

In SWTOR you have to raid dungeon after dungeon after dungeon, earn tokens for said item, save up tokens to buy the item, buy the item, strip the item of all of its mods, and then use the mods to put in a different set of armor.   I guess that is good for people that want insane amounts of customization for their character.  In the words of Sweet Brown "Ain't Nobody Got Time For That"...  or at least I don't.

To some people that might be ok, maybe at the end of the day and considering a spell of bad luck, maybe it takes equally long gearing yourself under both models.  But using WoW as an example, I think it is far more exciting obtaining gear that way rather grind grind grind.............

I dont think I will be back for the expansion either - I dont see why it wont be more of the same.

I'm kind of curious to play the free version but I have a question.  Can I finish the Revan storyline if I play the free version or would I have to purchase the game and a subscription?

you can do anything you want I believe in that area.  Basically, from what I understand you can level all the way up to 50.  Free to Play, from what I understand just slows a lot of things down (leveling takes longer, etc).  There might also be a Flash Point limit - and I bring that up because the Revan story line stuff does take you in to some flash points end game.

I don't think you will be able to do the end game HK companion quest without plunking down money.

Thanks for the info.  I've always been curious about the game since I liked KOTOR and KOTOR II so much, but I don't like to play MMORPGs partly for the monthly fee after I purchase a game at full price, partly because I prefer more FPS type multiplayer....and probably if I started playing I'd end up getting divorced and having to find a new place to live!   ;D

I think the questing and stuff is fun, but I think the price is a bit high on them per month...  I like the idea of the ever-growing game and all, but for me I don't get giggles out of all the dueling other players and things.  For me it's all story and things, and so there's 50% of the game I enjoy with another 50% kind of just being ignored.  Makes that subscription even tougher to choke down.

There seems to be an expansion in the works for STAR WARS - THE OLD REPUBLIC.  It's called Knights of the Fallen Empire.  Check out THE CINEMATIC TRAILER, "SACRIFICE" (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Nzq9epS2b1A)
