According to SuperHeroHype.com, it looks as if Dr. Doom has now been cast for the Fantastic Four movie as well.  Guy by the name of Julian McMahon, from the FX Series nip/tuck.  I'm not familiar with him, as I haven't seen the show, but here's a pic:

Middle Earth / Re: LOTR Trilogy Figures
« on: August 3, 2004, 08:31 AM »
I saw that report as well, and was wondering if it was true.  I would be kind of surprised, because the LOTR figures seem to sell pretty well (at Target, Wal-Mart) around here.  However, our TRU has been a wasteland in that area as well, just a solid section of the old packaged Gollum/Smeagols...and a few of the box sets.  Nothing new for quite a long time now, maybe this is why.

On another note, I saw this picture over at Action-Figure.com, of the Balrog prototype alongside a Gandalf the White figure, to show the scale.  This thing is going to be larger than I thought.  I'm not able to be into this line big time, but man that Balrog is tempting.  (Image courtesy Action-Figure.com):

Also, a few more PICS and some info can be found at the link.  Looks pretty cool!  Sounds like the pricepoint will be around $70.

Saga '02-'04 / Re: Burger King Glasses Figures!!!!!!
« on: August 2, 2004, 04:10 PM »
Just noticed in the little Q and A over at Rebelscum today, the impression that he (Mark, of Question Mark) got from Hasbro is that he didn't think that we would see anymore glass sets.  Apparently they didn't do as well as expected.  We personally never saw the Luke/Anakin glasses here.  Leia showed up once, briefly, and sold out quickly.  Obi and Maul are still sitting around.  I know some people dislike these, and I could do without the rehashed figures as well, but I was kind of hoping the Han/Boba/Yoda glasses would see the light of day.  Maybe they still will.

Watto's Junk Yard / Re: Selling Collections
« on: August 2, 2004, 01:20 PM »
Great topic Scott.  Yeah, this is something I think about once in awhile too.  It kind of goes hand in hand anymore with me when thinking about what I'd like to continue to collect.  It does take up a lot of space (and money), and to be honest, my wife would probably prefer I don't collect anything outside of Star Wars.  We've been discussing it lately, and I'm trying to figure out what I'd like to pare down.

I've been down that road too, the same as you Scott, when thinking about if I wanted to go OT-only.  I was close to thinking I could do it for awhile, but once the Episode III hype starts up again, I start to reconsider.  I've also thought about just "thinning out the ranks" and keeping main characters (definitive version if possible), as well as some strong supporting characters.  I guess kind of approaching it the way the vintage OT line was when I was a kid.  There was 77-85 figures or so covering all three movies, over a span of 9-10ish years.  Granted, times have changed, and also, the "central" characters change somewhat from movie to move in the prequels too.  But, I do often think about paring this area down.  The ships especially take up a lot of room, although I do like some of them.

I think about both aspects of this a lot, and actually a thought posted by Jeff in another thread got me to thinking about it more.  He was talking about how at one point he was buying things that he just thought "looked cool", instead of what he really liked and enjoyed collecting.  I'll admit, there are things I look at in my collection where I think "you know, I really didn't need this".  I either bought it because of a drought of finds and finally seeing something new, while having a bout of "completism" coming over me, or something along those lines.  I guess nostalgia and the love of Star Wars is what got me into this in the first place, and I never probably would have collected these other lines if it wasn't for that.

Right now, I'm considering giving up Marvel Legends/Minimtes.  Its going to be tough, but I know I need to start somewhere.  My wife really wants me to, and I can see her points when we do talk about this.  I think we've come to the compromise that I can continue with Spidey-related stuff, so I might go that route and get more specific with that collection.  I could honestly be happy with my LOTR collection with 4 more figures.  I just wanted the main core really, because I knew I didn't have the money or space to support more.  I have Legolas, Gimli, Gandalf, Pippin, and Gollum...and would like to add Aragorn, Frodo, Sam, and Merry.  I could be happy having those sit on a shelf.  The prequel Star Wars stuff I'm undecided on too.  It has crossed my mind before, but I'm worried about having "seller's remorse" like you mentioned Scott.  Nice topic though, it makes me feel better to know that the thought has at least crossed other people's minds here now and then.  Original Trilogy Star Wars stuff is the one area I can say that I've always been interested in, and would like to continue in until the end.  The other lines interest me too, and if we had more money and space, I'd be further into those as well...but we just don't, and it has come up in thought more lately that the money could be used elsewhere (when we were looking at TVs/furniture for our basement family room this weekend).  Anyways, again, nice topic.

M. Night's latest tops the box office this weekend.  Here's the run-down:

1. "The Village," $50.8 million
2. "The Bourne Supremacy," $23.4 million
3. "The Manchurian Candidate," $20.2 million
4. "I, Robot," $10.05 million
5. "Spider-Man 2," $8.5 million
6. "Catwoman," $6.1 million
7. "Harold & Kumar Go to White Castle," $5.15 million
8. "A Cinderella Story," $4.7 million
9(tie). "Fahrenheit 9/11," $3.1 million
9(tie). "Anchorman," $3.1 million

Also, the movie "Thunderbirds" apparently cost around $57 million to make, and debuted at No. 11 with $2.7 million.  Ouch.  "Shrek 2" took in $1.3 million to pad its total to $432.4 million, passing "Star Wars: Episode I -- The Phantom Menace" to become No. 4 on the all-time domestic chart.

Original Trilogy Collection / Re: Anybody find OTC at retail yet?
« on: August 2, 2004, 11:36 AM »
I don't know about your areas, but these seem to be selling through pretty well (the basic figures anyways, where they have shown up).  The only place in town here so far that has seen the VOTC, was TRU a couple of weeks ago.  They had a case of the 3x Han, 3x Obi, 2x Leia on the pegs, and were sold out the next day.  The peg that was labeled for them is now gone, replaced by Spawn.  TRU here also has quite a few of the Jedi Council sets sitting (still haven't brought myself to buy it), and this weekend had quite a few of the OTC Ask Yoda's as well.  Otherwise, basic figures there are still Saga offerings.  There are also plenty of Darth Vader TIEs sitting.

Wal-Mart is the only place where regular, basic OTC figures have shown, and they have sold out quickly.  I haven't made it to the one across town for awhile, but last time I was there it was pretty bare too.  The one closest to us is back to pegs of Hoth Han, Throne Room Luke, etc.  Oh, and plenty o' lightsabers.

Target is finally getting on the OTC track now the way it looks.  Still no basic figures there (just Saga offerings), but they did have 2 of the Falcons.  I really wanted to get this, but a little tight for money so I couldn't spend $50 for a ship I already have (plus, no room).  The Mrs. especially isn't crazy about me buying a $50 ship I already have, just because it has "new lights" ;)  It sounded silly when she said it outloud to me like that too.  They do now have Unleashed for sale at Target though...a few each of Leia and Obi-Wan.  Good to know these might be showing at another retail outlet now.

Anyways, at least around here, the OTC line seems to be pretty successful.  That is, at least the basic sized figures.  Those can't be found anywhere in town right now.  Other things, such as the council sets, ships, etc. seem to sit a bit though.

Toy Reviews / Re: OTC Millenium Falcon
« on: August 2, 2004, 09:32 AM »
I saw a couple of these at Target this past weekend, and so wanted to pick it up.  But, at $50, I can't quite justify it to my wife (since I already have a POTF2 one), and to be honest, I don't really have the space for two Falcons.  It was awfully tempting though, and if money wasn't quite as tight, I might have picked it up.  Tydirium, do you think it is significantly better than the POTF2 version?

Nice pics of the Luke figure...thanks!  I don't know if it has been mentioned, but GalacticHunter has some "hi res" shots up of the VOTC ROTJ wave.  They look pretty cool to me, and very well articulated.  You can take a look at the pics HERE

I see we're hanging just outside the top 25 (Nebraska), but that's not surprising.  Major upheaval and offensive revamp this offseason, so its hard to predict how good the team will be.  Should be an interesting year though.  No surprise with USC at the top of the heap to start things off.

From the previews I have seen, and miscellaneous TV spots, I have really been wanting to see Napoleon Dynamite since it began its run in "limited" release.  It is supposed to be nationwide now, but it isn't showing anywhere here in town.  I really hope that it does, otherwise I guess we'll be waiting for the DVD.  It does look hilarious though.

Revenge of the Sith / Re: Episode III line....April 2nd, 2005
« on: July 29, 2004, 03:21 PM »
2002 was the first time I had experienced any sort of "Midnight Madness".  I didn't do it during Episode I, but was pretty pumped for AOTC, and much deeper into collecting, so a friend and I decided to drive (about 40 miles) out of town to a Wal-Mart.  It was funny, there was probably about a dozen of us there waiting for them to "open the aisle", and I think I got most of the intial run except for a Royal Guard and Count Dooku, which I found later on.  That was by far the most Star Wars stuff I had ever bought at one time, and it was kind of a neat feeling coming home with great big bags of stuff to go through and open.  I think next year, since we're now in a city with Wal-Marts, Targets, and a TRU, I might try to do it again.  Either that or I might go the next day...it sounds like a lot of people had good luck doing that last time.  It is really exciting to get them as soon as you can, but I don't really like to "fight" over them with people either.  I had to save up for awhile last time to be ready for the big hit, I hope to do that again this time around.

I'll have to put a shot up soon of some of the vintage customs I bought back then.  Cool stuff still...

That would be really cool to see Matt.  There is still a part of me that wouldn't mind seeing some of those figures you mentioned made in "vintage-style" to display with the old school figures.  I mean, the sculpting today has obviously improved a lot, but there is just something cool about the vintage figures...that never seems to change.

Of course over time again, I have let  a few other figure lines slip into my collection here and there, like the Playskool Galactic Hereos, my DC Pocket Heroes, or my DC Direct Green Lantern Stuff.  Don't get me wrong, it is hard sometimes to pass up some of those awesome lines like Marvel Legends or MotU, but I know that I'll just eventually get tired of them too, just easier to skip it in the first place.  Much easier to collect a toy line you are passionate about then one you like just because it "looks cool".

Reading through that Collector Challenge sticky Thread, I don't know how some of you guys can do it!  I have enough trouble keeping up financially with SW, no room for more.

This is an excellent point Jeff, and something I've been thinking about more and more lately too.  Star Wars is always first and foremost with me, and that isn't going to change, so that is always where the most of the collecting moneys go to.  I've dabbled in other lines here or there, and some I have eventually lost interest in, I got into too late, or they were short lived (Batman, MOTU, Muppets).  The only other lines I've actively pursued (granted, much more limited) are Spidey/Marvel Legends and Lord of the Rings.  I'm not sure if we can handle it financially, and I know my wife is becoming frustrated whenever I buy some other "toy" that isn't Star Wars (which she thinks is enough, and is probably right).

It is hard enough to keep up with Star Wars stuff anymore, with all the different licensees involved, and many that I've had to avoid just because I can't afford it.  I really enjoy the Marvel Legends line, but I've given thought to limiting myself to Spider-Man and his universe if I pursue a 2nd line to Star Wars at all.  I do like my LOTR figures, and would like to get 4 more (9 total), and I think I'd be happy with that.  Its probably a weird way to feel...but even though I really enjoy collecting these other lines too, I sometimes start to feel "overwhelmed" with all these things to keep track of, save up for, find room for, etc.  Even though it is my choice totally to collect anything at all, so it does seem silly to think that way I guess.  Anyways...this post was longer than it needed to be...but good point Jeff ;)
