Title: Defender Wishlists 2008 Discussion
Post by: Scott on January 22, 2008, 09:32 PM
We'll be starting these up again after Toy Fair reveals most of 2008 (but not all :-\)

I've been keeping tabs and there has been hardly anything in the top 70 from last year but lots of stuff has been rumored.  Let's hope there is lots of goodies in New York next month...
Here is the schedule:

Episode I
Episode II
Episode III
Episode IV
Episode V
Episode VI
Clone Wars (By popular demand)
EU

We'll wrap up before Comic Con so JediMAC can hand deliver them again (and bend their ear)

Sadly, we already know we can leave all of the "Vinatge" figures needing updates off the lists, including Lumat who was originally scheduled for '07.

Why would that be?  Its too late for '08 but these are for late '09 and '10 planning basically, the power of the lists is pretty evident if you look back over the last 5 years we've done them.  I'd say almost 70% of the original list has been made, so I wouldn't exclude anything (including things that are strong rumor...Willrow Hood) until its officially announced or shown

Very nice!  As far as OT figures are concerned, I have a choice selection of new and resculpted figures to hope for  8)

Edit: looking back at the 2007 thread, we could almost transfer everything over since so few were made.  I wonder if Tonnika sisters are going to futilely place high again?

Well...we really did not get a lot from the lists this year (at most 9 if you include Han Stormtrooper w/ Red Eyed Helmet)...

2007 Wished For Figures That Were Made (http://www.jedidefender.com/yabbse/index.php?topic=14924.msg314087#msg314087)

The figures that were made this year really knocked out a ton of wished for stuff JUST outside the top 10, I believe 5 of 7 #11's from last year made, lots of stuff in the overall top 20 for each movie.  Lets hope the 2 unannounced waves make our wishes come true :)

Lets hope the 2 unannounced waves make our wishes come true :)

Let's.
Time to start some new lists.
I really want more pilots. I hope Luke Hoth pilot, Grizz Frix & Red 9 make the pilot cut in there are any exclusive vehicles or BP's that are not announced yet!

Red 9 would make a sweet figure too! His heroic big schnoz protruding from the helmet would strike fear in the hearts of the Empire. He would be so awesome!!!

Name:  Lt. Naytaan (Red 9)
Occupation: Rebel pilot who led the relief effort of Clakdor VII in the Mayagil sector - also fought in the Battle of Yavin
How he died: Killed by a TIE fighter laser
Which film? Star Wars: A New Hope
Last spoken words: "I'm hit!!!"

I threw my vote out for Episode 1...  Like I figured I'm seeing a lot of resculpt requests and that seems logical.  That line's seen few resculpts of high quality, and yet that was a BIG portion of collecting for a while.  LOADS of figures, and for quite a while at that, on the pegs.  So with that, you have to consider how dated some of those figures are looking...  Obi-Wan was my immediate go-to request as he's got really ****** E1 figures as far as likeness and articulation goes.  There's probably an SA base figure already in existance that would work well, just with a deco tweak and a new headsculpt, for Obi-Wan.

I wish they'd include those little Jedi communicators for their belts, but I see Qui-Gon didn't get one in the Evolutions set so I'm not hopeful for Obi-Wan.  Hell they don't even give us Saber hilts all the time, and they should.

Anyway, that's neither here nor there...  I just see a lot of resculpt requests, and that makes me happy. :)

I'm just going to guess here though...resculpts tend to do rather poorly here (1-2 per list, so maybe, 15%).  At other sites, the resculpts are out the wazoo but our readers and listers tend to prefer all new characters over resculpts.  Obi-Wan made it last year, QGJ the year before but outside of that I see most of them being new

I don't disagree against a super keen SA Wave like:

Anakin Skywalker w/ Podrace and Naboo Pilot Helmet and Padawan Head
Obi-Wan Kenobi (Ultimate)
Queen Amidala (Red Gown)
Jar Jar Binks SA
Darth Maul (w/ ball elbows)
Nute Gunray SA
Qui Gon Jinn (Evolutions Rerelease)
Battle Droid

Are there really that many new E1 figures everyone wants though?  That just seems like a movie that's getting squeezed dry on interesting stuff...  I'm sorta not counting repaints in my thinking too though, so the R5's (which I want) would be out by my own logic, but I guess maybe I'm underestimating the power of pod racers.

I just really can't stand the designs for the most part on those and wish we'd get beyond them...  Mawhawnic included, who really isn't a stand-out character.  Rum Sleg's about the only "new guy" I didn't list that I'd like to get from the E1 realm...  Maybe some of the other aliens from the stands at the Pod Race I suppose, but I really feel like that line's almost needing a complete facelift at this point.  It's sorta sad, considering all that was spent on the original figures that now don't hold up too well.

I like this list that Scott posted above as well.  Although we all like to see new characters/figures, I think much of the Episode I line (main characters in particular) could stand to be re-done.  There really hasn't been much in the way of TPM figures lately (which I was ok with), but we're due for some re-dos of some of these.  I thought Hasbro mentioned in a Q and A at some point that TPM and AOTC Obi-Wans would be on the way in the next couple years, but maybe I'm not remembering correctly.

I agree with this a bit. That way we can vote on the Top 10 never-realeased figures from each movie, and then have a Top 10 resculpt list from all 6 (or 7) movies, CW, etc and then they could get thrown into the voting for the overall Top 25 list. What say you, Scott? I know this is your baby, and might be a little more work for you.

Maybe next year we can do a resculpt wishlist...as I said, resculpts generally only 1-2 spots per movie

One other thing I was thinking about RE both TPM and AOTC...how long has it been since definitive main characters have actually been on the pegs (TPM is probably 2000-2001ish and AOTC 2003-2004).  Hasbro has very keen keeping Vader, Luke and Han on the pegs...what about Anakin, Padme, Obi-Wan and the Darths?  It is sort of a double standard to me.  And I base this on the fact that my 6 year old has tons and tons of OT figures but hardly any prequel stuff outside of ROTS figures...and that is mainly based off the fact that there has been jack squat for a long, long time
Title: Re: Defender Wishlists 2008 Discussion

It seems like the majority of the Ep1/2 stuff that has appear in the last year or two has either been Maul (carded, evolutions, etc) or lots of Ep2 based Battle Packs (Geonosis Arena, TRU Arena Creatures set, Droid Factory, etc).

And, I like having the resculpts mixed in with the regular lists as it forces you to think about what you really want to get from each movie to try to get it down to a "top ten" list.  You have to weigh the want for resculpts vs. the want for "new" figures.  Adds a bit of challenge to it and it's interesting to see how that plays out for various people.

If you start adding a wish-list for resculpts, why not one for droids only... or one for troopers only... etc etc.  Having more and more wishlists just dilutes the whole thing IMHO.  We are already at 8 wishlists (80 picks), do we really need another 10 picks to capture your "most" wanted figures?

Scott I do agree with you to a point about main characters for the prequels.

We definitely need SA Obi and Qui-gon (single carded) on pegs. Maul and Dooku haven't had too much respect lately, but for reissues of Maul. There are still MANY Padme outfits that can be released. I'd actually like to see an SA kid Anakin as well as....SA Jar Jar.

My point being is that while I'd like to see some of the main characters back on shelves, I don't want them there unless they are extremely better versions. Perfect or near perfection, especially with regards to articulation.

This is a good point Scott.  Aside from ROTS, the prequel figures (main characters in particular) haven't had the best showing the past few years.  I mean, I'm more of an OT fan and all, but it would be nice if they started having some of the TPM and AOTC main characters back out there again - for new collectors and kids (or ultimate version resculpts for all).  Our nephews have really been getting into Star Wars the past few years, and although they may be in the minority, they do seem to take to the prequel movies a little more (although they enjoy them all).  The characters they always want to "be" or "play" are Obi-Wan, Anakin, Qui-Gon, Maul, Grievous, or Yoda (and occasionally Luke, because they like all of the Jedi).

I'm one of the (maybe few) collectors that likes the fact that we have a Han, Luke, Chewie, etc. on the pegs every year, especially if they use the best sculpts/figures that we have available.  Heck, I just got the Jedi evolutions set this weekend, and I already hope they release Qui-Gon on a single card so I can get another one (same goes for Jango).  I wouldn't mind them sticking the Evolutions Maul, Dooku, AOTC Anakin out there again, and then get to resculpts of some of the others.  Even though they might not be the most loved characters, its kind of surprising that we haven't seen new or single carded versions of TPM Anakin, Jar Jar, Obi-Wan, and AOTC Obi-Wan, Anakin, Padme, etc. for awhile (some since the POTJ line).  I used to think that would be a good outlet if they wanted a "Legends" line, fill it up with figures like VOTC Han, EB Chewie, Evo Maul/Dooku/Qui-Gon/Jango, etc. so that the main characters are out there for everyone throughout the year.  Speaking of which, on an unrelated topic, I remember the VOTC Han being taken out of the Legends voting because he was "being released in another way in 2008".  After Toy Fair, I wonder what that avenue is.

I'd say I'm in agreement that the way we have this going right now narrows it down a bit while still giving some choice.  If you really start branching out, like Jeff pointed out, you sort of water the whole process down and it's really not a narrow wishlist anymore...  I know, at least for myself, that if it went with a resculpt list, I would have a LOT of freed up space then since that's a lot of what I really hope for...  At least right now anyway.

I can always find somethign to replace a figure as we get them of course, but ultimately I think this format really forces you to make tougher choices, and as we've seen in the past, our wishlists seem to come partially true every year...  Hasbro's seemingly listening, so our lists also change every year.

Not sure on other characters, but Scotty put together some great stories on missing Padmes a while back...

I was pretty surprised to see 8 ladies make the top 10 of AOTC...Padme usually does fairly well on the lists here so I guess I'm not that surprised.  I'm torqued they did a 4th Version of the Arena/Droid Factory outfit instead of one of the many other sculpts they could have chosen.  Fireplace Padme last year was a welcome addition but there are still far too many not made.   And don't even get me started on ROTS >:(
Title: Re: Defender Wishlists 2008 Discussion

Very surprising results on the AOTC poll.  And while I see the importance of Padme as a character, I don't see the fascination with so many Padme figures.  Certainly, I can appreciate the Natalie Portman hotness angle, but it doesn't translate to figures for me.

Padme hasn't been one of the better selling characers in the basic figure line.  I see far too many fireside Padme's hanging on the pegs.  And I still see the ROTS Padme that was repacked in the TSC Greatest Battles line hanging around in a number of stores.

I have no doubt that Padme is going to remain a fixture in the line for the years to come, just like Leia.  I can see a good 1-3 a year occupying the Basic Figure and multi-pack lines.  I don't think we're going to get all of these in a short space of time.  I think the Evolutions pack is a great offering and achieves a lot for Padme fans.  And I think the Arena Padme was the most natural AOTC choice for that set.  Unless of course Hasbro chose to revisit the Theed Battle Padme as the TPM/action-oriented offering.

Also, I see that there were a couple of resculpt candidates in the top ten.  I think I had one on my own list, but that was it.  It's a little disheartening to see those instead of never before made characters.  But it's a poll, and this is what people have voted for.

I don't know about others, but I want funeral Padme because it's a beautiful dress (I guess that I like her wardrobe) and the connection between her and Anakin with the necklace he gives her in Phantom Menace. Otherwise, she really doesn't make much of an action figure.

It's definitely kind of dark/twisted to want a figure of a corpse.

I'd like a Funeral Padme with Casket set just as much as I'd like a Vader with Funeral Pyre set.  I think both sets would make neat centerpieces for new scenes on my loose figure shelves and, for me, would be more interesting than seeing EU Jedi #34 and #35 filling out my Geonosis Arena.

Maybe it's morbid to some folks, but to me it's just another scene from the movies and not really any worse than the "partially electrocuted" Vader or "crispy fried" Anakin figures we've already seen.  ;)

I don't see the fascination with so many Padme figures.

That's what makes these polls so interesting.  Some folks would prefer all-new figures, some prefer to see resculpts of figures that they thought sucked, some would prefer nothing but Neimoidians.  Different strokes for different folks, as they say.

** edit:
And one other thing...

Year after year, I keep putting Toonbuck Toora on my AotC list.  The only problem is that I also have her on my TPM list.   ::)

Every year, I copy my old AotC list, paste it in the new thread, remove the names of figures we got, and then add the new names. And every year, after the tally is made, I look back and realize that I doubled up Toora... again.   ::)  ::)

I really need to fix that one of these years...   :-[

Unlike other johnny come latelies, this is our 5th year of doing Wish Lists...I just found our 2003 ANH Results...

Big deal.  I've been doing my own personal wishlists in my head every year since1978.  Top that.

Hasbro confirmed Needa.

I don't remember that.  Is this true?  If so, I'll have to update the list I just submitted.  ???

I don't remember Needa being confirmed anywhere, Hasbro answered about him last year if a remember and said he'll probably come soon but nothing certain

He was 'confirmed' here (http://cgi.denpetersen.com/YAK1/viewtopic.php?t=1583)...

4/13/07

Q. Okay, I love all the Imperial officers that you have been producing over the last few years. But I still have an empty slot in my Empire Strikes Back collection for the ill fated Captain Needa. Any sense on when I might be able to fill that spot with an action figure?

A. We can't tell you for certain when he will come out, but it's a good bet that in the next two years you will have him in 3-3/4" format.

I'm thinking he's probably coming in the ESB wave in 2009.

Empire results are here...lots of resculpts :)

There were a TON of wished for characters from last years' list that were made or coming in 2007/2008:

Luke Skywalker (Snowspeeder)  I know people still want another but it still counted
Willrow Hood (Finally)
R5-M2
Princess Leia (Hoth) Coming in the Comic Pack
Hobbie (X-Wing Gear) I still would like a Snowspeeder Hobbie
Wes Janson
Lando Smuggler
4-LOM
2-1B
Boba Fett (ESB Deco)
Darth Vader (Hologram)
Zev Senesca
General McQuarrie
Han Solo (Toture Rack)
Kesin Ommis

And probably more, anyway, it has a big impact on the list this year as there were LOTS more votes for resculpts.  After Needa (who was #11) the next 5 were also resculpt requests

Man it looks strange not to have ICMG in the top-ten for ESB this year...  :)

10)  Noghri Warrior (Thrawn Trilogy)...  (Sorry Jason, I did dump Corran Horn)  I've always wanted one of these guys and so he's getting into the list.

This is because I forgot to vote for the RFT isn't it? That's it, you're off the Xmas card list. >:(

Oh wait right I don't have one, haha.  ;D No worries JJ, the Noghri is a solid pick I can't imagine why we haven't gotten one yet.

Sim Aloo needs more votes! He is a vintage figure that really needs to be redone.

I'm hoping Zam Wessell does well...she is my most wanted resculpt at this point. As far as never before made characters go, Ackmena is at the top of my list. After thirty years, I think we're at a point where the Holiday Special really deserves some attention. Give her a Commtech chip too, Hasbro. "I'll be waiting."

Although she may not be my most wanted resculpt I too hope Wessell will do well in the polls. Mostly because I have her speeder and her other figures wont fit in them. Plus I loved her character in the comics and Bounty Hunter game. Darn it Hasblow make us a better Zam! ::)

Not a bad list for the tournament of champions, wish Guri made the cut though.

Thanks again for working on this, Scott! :)

:'( I'm kinda upset that the Zam Wessell resculpt and Ackmena, my top two choices, didn't make the cut. Lumpy too. Not the best results ever, but decent nonetheless.

Meh... :-\
