Title: Sideshow 12" Darth Vader
Post by: Jeff on May 15, 2008, 11:39 PM
You can't really see much, but I guess you can consider it confirmed...

He's more Machine now than Man… (http://www.sideshowtoy.com/?p=4832)

All I can see is a silhouette behind Anakin...  I'm guessing he'll be a "big reveal" planned for SDCC'08.  ;)

Odd because the Sith Eyes Anakin (aka Darth Vader) was last year's SDCC exclusive.

Perhaps this is a two-pack with an Armored version?

Wasn't that two years ago?  I thought last year was the holo chair with holo Sidious.  I am hoping this is a stand alone figure since I don't think we need a third Anakin.

I hope the reveal is SDCC and i also hope this means they will bring back the Inclusive edition for this one.

With everyone wanting a Vader,I too hope this is an INCLUSIVE figure. It's probably the only way I'll be able to get my hands on one!

yeah they would have to be insane not to go Inclusive on this one. Maul and Jabba were Inclusive and Vader is on another level. people who haven't picked up even 1 SS 12" will be wanting this one. I'm afraid it's going to be over $100 though :/ Should be pretty awesome though. I have all the sith so far in this line, hopefully they make dooku soon and the main sith will be complete :)

Sad, but not only do I have to work that day,we have no internet at my work place either.Hopefully the EXCLUSIVE title is just that it is being sold @ SSC.If not, there will be some very irritated collectors who won't be able to get their hands on one, except on the secondary market.

I'm surprised Vader is not an inclusive edition, however, for you and others at work without internet, copy down SS's customer service number.  If you are a subscriber to the newsletter, you can call at 10 AM PST and order over the phone.  You just need to give them your email address to confirm that you are eligable to order.  I did this for the old Kenobi since the website was having problems that day.

Obviously it will be great to see the whole thing this weekend on display at SDCC.  I was hoping for ROTJ Vader with removeable helmet.  I still might just wait for that version.  This one looks decent in the preview picture.

I'll definitely reserve my judgement until I see the full 360 on it.  However, I'm definitely in on getting this one.  I wonder what it'll go for price wise...
Title: Re: Sideshow 12" Darth Vader
Post by: Brian on July 23, 2008, 11:43 AM
Yeah, I'm curious what the price will be on this one too.  I have a feeling it won't be pretty (especially after that Snake Eyes preview for their Joe line), but we'll see.  From the preview, it looks pretty good, but I look forward to seeing better pics as well.  Like others have mentioned, I'm surprised they didn't make this (and the Stormtrooper) inclusive orders.  I'm not nearly as familiar with all of that as those of you who have been actively collecting this line, but from what I understand that might have been a good idea for characters this popular.
Title: Re: Sideshow 12" Darth Vader

My guess is $129.99  ::)
Title: Re: Sideshow 12" Darth Vader
Post by: Phatty on July 23, 2008, 05:24 PM
I just saw some close-ups from SDCC, and I'm very happy with him.  However, I'm sure there are many out there who will pick it apart based on such trivial flaws that the average collector won't ever notice or care.  Like every other Vader ever produced.  I'm still going to have to get this one, and I'm definitely afraid that the $129.99 prediction is an accurate one!

The regular edition (http://www.sideshowtoy.com/?page_id=4489&sku=2129) of Darth Vader is now up for preorder (the exclusive that goes on sale next week includes a "force choke" hand).  This version is $124.99, shipping 2nd quarter of 2009.

Thanks for the heads up, Brian.  I'm away next week on vacation and the exclusives for both Vader and the stormtrooper aren't that special, so I went ahead and ordered the regular editions of each.

Now I just have to worry about the Obi Wan character key and Lobo for items that go up for sale while I'm away.

Yeah, I went ahead and ordered the regular versions as well.  The exclusive versions would be fine, but if I'm honest with myself I won't necessarily display them with those accessories anyways, so I'll be fine having the regular versions on order and not stress about it next week.  I'm glad there is at least some space between the two releases, so it isn't as difficult to afford.  I've gotten Han and Leia via BBTS this week, and I'd really like to continue getting the "core" OT characters if possible.  I figure I just as well preorder them now, and I can always cancel them if it turns out I can't afford them or whatever.  Now I just need to pick up Luke and Obi-Wan at some point.

Back on topic, but looking at the gallery, both of these (Vader/Stormie) look pretty nice to me.

Not a bad price overall for a new, armored figure with nothing from previous figures.
Title: Re: Sideshow 12" Darth Vader
Post by: Brian on July 25, 2008, 12:38 PM
Quick question sort of relating to this...I haven't kept up on this line really until recently when I ordered the ANH Han and Leia from BBTS.  My only order through Sideshow previously was the Bespin Han, so I don't really remember.  What is shipping like for these figures from Sideshow?  I ask because I noticed that BBTS put Vader and Stormtrooper both up for preorder as well, and their prices are $10 and $6 cheaper, respectively.  I didn't know if shipping would even it out or not, but if I can save a little, I might switch my preorders.  Anyways, just wondering if there was any differences.

I am going to hold off and order Vader on Friday.  I want the 'choke' hand - that's the one I will use.  As for the other two....I might order them from SS or wait and see if I can get them cheaper elsewhere.  I still haven't gotten the Endor 3-pack or any of the Empire guys.  I dunno...I didn't even order the latest Luke.  I am holding out hope for Lando and a Padme in one of her beautiful gowns from AOTC.

You build up points for every purchase.  The more you spend, the more points you get.  Next time you order, you can use your points to lower the cost.  I think you need like 75ish points just to get a couple bucks off, but if you order 2-3 figs, you can build up enough points to make it worthwhile.

WARNING: I found this out the hard way - save your points for cheaper priced items, not expensive items!  When you use points on an order, you don't collect ANY points for the remaining purchase price.  I used my points on the Clone Wars Obi Wan to save a few bucks, but now I'm not getting any of the points for him and he's worth quite a few.  You're way better off collecting points on the big tickets, then using them on something smaller.

Take your points and divide them by 20 and you'll see your discount. Be patient, I'm getting my Rebel Fleet Trooper for $13.78, that's with tax, S&H.

The real trick, is that when you DO use your points to partial purchase something, that item becomes INELIGIBLE for the points it would be worth if you hadn't used your points :)

I went a head and put myself on the Wait list for the Dark Lord. Both were sold out so I'm on the list for both the exclusive and the regular... I'll have to pay attention so I remember to cancel one of them. I was originally hesitant with the outrageous price point but I finally caved. I haven't been buying as much Hasbro stuff lately, the Stargate lines I collect are dying down and may be cancelled, and I don't really collect much else other than that so I think I can swing it. I only have three Star Wars Sideshows at this point. I've got Maul and Qui-Gon who make a nice pair. And I had to buy Old Ben Kenobi when he came out. I figured that Vader makes a perfect companion piece for him.

With this kind of evolution in 12 inches action figures, Sideshow would make a Rotj Vader with removable helmet in 2 parts. The stormtrooper is very cool, an evolution that will be considered to build a new sculpt of a 3 3/4 inches one.

New pictures of the Sideshow Darth Vader have been posted on the front page. Check it. (http://www.jedidefender.com/)  :)

I was about to cancel my order on this as I'm about out of money, and I need to start saving more so I can move out of Colorado in the near future, but after seeing this I can't bring myself to do it. These pictures are of the production model not the prototype. Good ****. This looks to be one of the best figures they have ever done, and it looks like it will go great with my Old Ben.  :)

I think I'll have to whip up a special mini-diorama for them to duel in...

I'm with you, Ryan... I cannot wait to get my hands on this thing. I've got to decide if I'm going to pose it with Old Ben or Jedi Luke or a stormtrooper. Who am I kidding? I'll probably wear the joints out just playing with it. July can't get here soon enough. It'll be so awesome just to finally have a Darth Vader in a proper scale.

Yeah, I've heard Medicom has some quality stuff - the Boba Fett looks perfect - but standing next to the proper scale, they just look ridiculous. I'm still picking through some of these photographs - I'm not sure how I feel about one of the tusks being flat black. I know it's screen accurate, but that might drive me nuts.

Here's the SSC Vader with the tunic under the shoulder armor, like in ESB and ROTJ... Only takes a little adjusting, no serious customization.

That sucks about the puppy having a Vader snack, Matt. I've been thinking about maybe putting Vader in a glass case because he might be a dust magnet. I've seen a few collectors who have taken the case a step further and started building a Bespin Duel sort of grid underneath with orange lighting. Wish I had the patience to craft something that cool. I've actually got an Exclusive Bespin Luke headed my way just in case I were ever to try that.

I'm actually planning something similar for my Vader and  SS Obi-Wan. I'd like to re-create their duel from ANH with a Mini Death Star diorama. I'm planning on just making the doorway and the hallway they are in. But I'd like to light it and have it closed off from dust. We'll see if I ever get around to it (that's kind of how customizing is for me these days, I have lots of ideas but never get around to most of them) but that's the plan.

Actually this will be the last SS figure I buy for a long time. Or at least until they make Count Dooku or General Grievous. ;D

The Dark Side is strong.  Temptation was too much. I just placed a waitlist order.  The good news is that its just a waitlist and it doesn't cost me anything.  I wonder how likely these waitlist orders will be for conversion?  My only waitlist experience was with General Kenobi and it got converted to a real order.

If they do a removable helmet one, I may cave and buy it.  I'd like this one but I'm assuming it's nowhere to be found.  It's too great to still be available.

They'll have at least two more versions, I'm sure... The "reveal" version is going to be $200, I guarantee that.

I should steer clear of this thread as well.  Those pictures make this figure look amazing.  I've been back and forth with the Sideshow 12" line, with price being the biggest factor keeping me away.  If I only collected these, it wouldn't be a problem - but of course, that isn't the case.  That being said, this Vader looks amazing.  I had it on preorder (along with the Stormtrooper) earlier this year, but had to cancel when I lost my job.  I had always hoped to just have a lineup of the "biggies" from ANH, and maybe Lando/Yoda/Fett when they got to all of them.  Like Jesse mentioned though, I'm sure this Vader long gone from being available at this point - and I'd have to sell a lot of stuff to get back into these.  Very, very nicely done though.

Yep they have been getting more expensive and it seems like they aren't as sought after on Ebay as I thought they would be.

I just noticed that the exclusive Vader is limited to 1977 pieces. Could that be a subtle reference by SS to when Star Wars came out?

Yeah, SSC has done that before. I believe Obi-Wan, Han Solo, and Bespin Luke are also that way.

These babies are shipping this week, by the way... I should be getting mine real soon. Cannot wait.

It was charged this morning, but I got a UPS Tracking e-mail two days ago - $139 ($124.99 + $7.14 shipping). Delivery date is supposedly the 16th.

There's always ebay  :).

It seems like you can find SS figures on ebay for about the same price as if you pre-ordered them from Sideshow...sometimes you can find them for a bit less as with the Qui-Gon figure.

I agree with you there. However, if I'm going to basically pay the sideshow price, then I'd at least like to get the sideshow points for it.  ;D

Don't give up hope yet... if they are not done shipping, there are still plenty of chances to convert.

There will be folks whose CCs get declined, folks who decide to return it (because they forgot to cancel), folks who return because they don't like it, etc.  Plus, there always set aside a certain % of the stock to replace broken/lost figures.  If that extra stock goes unused, it gets passed along to wait list.

I would, but I don't have a camera. :-\

All I can say is that SS really did good with details on Darth Vader. The only problem I have with vader so far is that he can't kneel down, but otherwise he's great.

Edit: he can keel down you just have to remove the belt holding the plate between his legs.

I hope you're able to convert, too. I knew that Vader, if he was done half-right, would have an enormous presence on the shelf... I had no idea he'd be this good, though. My biggest complaint about him is that he's too tall. SSC Vader is 3 inches taller than SSC Bespin Luke - I don't know if that's because Bespin Luke is too small or Vader is too tall, or both, but they can't stand too close without Luke (and several others) looking ridiculous.

Yeah, and Luke's "oh ****" expression looks even worse standing next to Vader. I've got a stormy, but I'm really wishing I had a second to flank him. That, and I don't like the look of Piett, so I'm really regretting SSC didn't do a better job with that.

Maybe Governor Tarkin will make a good companion? Or a pair of Royal Guards?

:-[  Not yet.  I've got the Medicom ROTS version, but still haven't grabbed the Sideshow one.  The shipping is outrageous to Canuckia, so I'm being patient and waiting for a reasonable price from a secondary seller (one that uses USPS, not UPS or FedEx - their additional charges to cross the border are another kick in the gut).

I can finally say that I've added the Sideshow Vader to my collection.  And what a fantastic figure it is!

I remember reading about people being unhappy with the helmet (I think it didn't flare out "properly"?), but I have to say it looks pretty damn good to me.  8)

I think I'm going to take my 2 Medicom Stormtroopers and display them flanking this Vader.

Seems like medicom achieves more detail depicting faces like Jedi Luke or ROTJ Vader, what happens with sideshow is the depiction of a large scale texture on the suit and gloves.
