The Clone Wars '08-'13 / Re: Clone Wars Figure Rumors/Speculation
« on: October 16, 2011, 12:05 PM »
For some reason the folks at JTA seem convinced that this means 19 figures total for the whole year. That cannot be right. They showed nearly that many in the first 2 waves alone. I think that leaves something like 5 unrevealed figures for the rest of 2012? It just seems too incredible to believe. That's a LOT of money they are leaving on the table for their most successful line.

If you have a good thing going, milk it, don't starve it.

I find that report highly suspect.  Additionally, I think that the info that got out is questionable since Derryl DePriest wasn't present at the con.  He's the one real source that can be counted on for some solid information.  I'm thinking it's more likely that this is what's meant to hold collectors over until Toy Fair, at which point more will be announced.

Or, something bigger could be in the works.  Such as?  A complete shift towards realistic looking figures.  Witness the new, realistic Anakin Skywalker that was on display at NYCC:

This figure might be an indication of things to come.

I asked no such question, and Ashley was very clear about the fact that she couldn't say much at all.  I pretty much figured out that she was talking about the story arc with the Clones & General Krell on Umbara.

Given everything else in that battle pack, I'm thinking repaint.  All of those figures look like a reissue of some sort.

The Pit Droids are the only thing that looks a little different, as I think they may have a new paintscheme.

LucasArts was demoing TOR at NY Comic Con today.  They must have had about 40 gaming stations set up inside the booth, but there was still a considerable line to get in and try out the game.  There's also a HUGE Darth Malgus life-size maquette standing guard at the booth.

A friend of mine is also currently beta testing the game.  His initial reaction?  "It's that good."  I think he couldn't tear himself away from the game to elaborate much more.  But the gameplay I was able to see on the monitors at the Lucas Arts booth looked pretty amazing.

Here we go:

These are the 3.75" scale figures, while the black and gold Iron Man off to the right is 6" scale.

I picked up an extra Hulk exclusive if anyone is looking to make a trade.

It wasn't in the display case.  But on the vehicle front, the Naboo starfighter looked AWESOME.  So much of an improvement from the original Episode I version!

This week's episode seemed to draw on a few things.  First, the droids in a Y-Wing.  That totally took me back to the animated segment from the Holiday Special.

Then there's the first segment.  Filoni's homage to Gulliver's Travels anyone?  That certainly seemed to be the direction of the first planet.

The second planet was clearly a tip of the hat to the Wizard of Oz.  And with Pit Droids as the Wizard?  There does seem to be some love within Lucasfilm for the Pit Droids, because they're something of an homage to the Three Stooges.  That kind of slapstick is a nice bit of comic relief.  Especially with the turn the series is about to take.

I got to catch up with Ashley Eckstein (voice of Ahsoka Tano) at NY Comic Con today.  And she asked me what I thought of the season so far.  I told her that I thought the characters needed to face some real danger, and seeing Captain Tarpals demise seemed to indicate that things are going to get serious.  She said that the next story arc of 4 episodes is going to get more serious, but couldn't eleborate much beyond that.

Looks like some more Thor figures might be in the pipeline.  A new Deluxe Frost Giant, for one.

Well, you've got the television show to tide you over until volume 6 finally gets completed.  The series may be something that manages to light a fire under George R.R. Martin's ass.

I'll lay odds on 3 years.

Looking at some of the images of the Theed Padme, and I think I know why she's in the Movie Heroes line.  I think there's an action feature with a rapelling line, harkening back to the ascension gun scene.  When I see it in person tomorrow I'll be able to confirm that particular suspicion.

I get the logic of adding a battlepack out there of those characters.  But at least put out the most up-to-date figures of those characters. The same with this re-release of the Maul Sith Speeder.  I understand putting out the Sith Speeder again but with that same Maul figure from 1999?  I guess it's a cost thing.

That one actually REALLY bothers me.  Hasbro could really draw some collectors in on the Maul with Sith Speeder if they just used a more up to date figure mold and some new deco on the speeder.

And they add insult to injury by including that same sith speeder Darth Maul in the 2-pack with Darth Sidious.  #FAIL

Wow...anyone notice this little gem of a battlepack, using the Obi Wan Outlander club figure? Talk about a step backwards...

The thing is, in it's time that was the best AOTC Obi-Wan from that period.  And in keeping that retro theme it looks like that Jango Fett may be the AOTC preview figure, too.  If Hasbro wants to offer 10 year old figures in battle packs, it makes it far easier for me to ignore them.

So far things look okay.  We'll obviously see more after the panel.  I caught up with the SWAN folks last night after they had been in the hall and they seemed underwhelmed with what was on display then.  The revisions on the pod racers look a bit better, but I was never a big fan of those vehicles in general.

The electronic Obi-Wan and Qui-Gon figures are predictably bulky.  That's what comes with electronics in a figure, though.  I guess we're likely to see more of this MOVIE HEROES line a little later on.
