Title: Photography. New Zealand, Rome, and now, World War II Aviation.
Post by: Rob on October 19, 2006, 04:32 PM
So I spent a lot of time over the last few months finally processing all the photos I took in New Zealand back in May - and since pretty much just my family and co-workers were seeing them, I thought I'd share them here too.

My hope is that this can become sort of a Jedi Defender photography thread where everyone can share their photography and we can all pat eachother on the back.  If that never materializes, at least I'm sharing mine. :)

So anyway, here are most of them more or less in chronological order.  They get better as they go along.  There are lots of images here, so you'll have to forgive me for the load time.

Additionally, the images from 'the farm' can't be posted now because they may be published at some point in the next year or three - but they're some of the best pictures I've ever taken...

If you make it down to where the snow-covered mountain (volcano) images are, that's where they shot a bunch of the Mordor stuff for LOTR.

Enjoy.

Great pics!

It's amazing how much variety there is in New Zealand's terrain. You have areas that resemble Northern Europe, Central America, Africa, the American Rockies and Pacific Northwest, and frankly some things that look like they're from outer space. Really quite astounding for such a small country.

Wow.  :o

There are some really great pictures in there Rob. I've always wanted to go to New Zealand, and these pictures have just made me insanely jealous.

Just looking at all the pictures you can see why they chose New Zealand to shoot LOTR. It looks like earth, but there is definitely an almost unworldly feel to it. All those colors in the various springs and pools are absolutely gorgeous. That sprial looking plant is really cool looking. I really would think it came from another planet. Those mud pits are pretty neat too. There are quite a few pictures in there that could be in National Geographic.

You guys sure seemed to get around and saw a bit of everything. Fastastic work on those pictures Rob, and did I mention how jealous I am? :P

What a beautiful country. Some of the shots of the water made it look so refreshing and *gasp* blue. I'd love to visit someday.

Excellent pics, Rob.

One question, what the hell is that hairless thing with the buck teeth?

GNT heard Rob was in the area so he hopped down for a quick visit

Looks wonderful Rob, my 10 year anniv is coming soon, I was thinking of us going to NZ or Australia, might just have to do that now.  There is a lot of cool stuff there

No idea - I'm 99% sure it's fictional, but damn it's freaky.  Some kind of bat-like monstrosity?

Thanks for sharing the pics Rob, those really look great.  New Zealand is one of those places that the Mrs. and I call "if we could travel anywhere someday..." type of vacation.  I really hope that we can do that someday, those pictures of yours remind me why - it looks like a beautiful and interesting place to go.

I love the "Anger" sign.

And the graffiti on the beach is kind of funny too: They even have jerks in New Zealand.

Yep - but not many.  The entire country is pretty much clean as hell.  Everyone thows their trash away, everyone recycles, for the most part, everyone really takes care of all that natural beauty they've got going on.

Wow! I'm envious at both the trip and your ability to take such beautiful pictures.

What kind of Camera do you use?

I shot those on a Digital Rebel XT - but probably half of the vibrancy and sharpness is due to extensive time color correcting and adjusting the levels in photoshop.

I'll throw together a quick before/after thing and post it in a little while.

Simply fantastic Rob.  I really like the black edge you add to the pictures, it gives them a real 'finished' look.

After seeing you pictures, it sure makes me want to upgrade my camera and learn a lot more about Photoshop.

I love Rome...from pictures at least. I should be going there this summer, but money is tight and I don't know if I'll have to save for a move instead. Great shots, although I feel sorry for that turtle. I especially like the photo of the town overshadowed by a cathedral...I assume it's a cathedral and not the basilica.

It's the Duomo overshadowing Florence - taken from the top of said Duomo.

You can see it popping up behind some other buildings in one of the other shots.

As for Rome, I absolutely love Italy - it's a sort of a second home.  I lived there for 2 months and I wish it had been 2 decades.

I hope to buy property there someday.

I have lots more pictures from my first trip there (the 2 month one) that I'll scan someday and share - back then I was shooting with real film and developing everything myself.

Absolutely beautiful.  That architecture looks great with B&W photography.

This is my favourite pic.  The hustle and bustle oblivious to the most amazing building in the world.  I really hope to see the Colosseum myself someday.

Beautiful pictures.  My fiance went to Italy around labor day with her mom and took a lot of similar pictures.  Someday, I hope to go there.

Back in April I went down to our local Flight Museum because they had some WWII Bombers in town.  Since I'm a total geek about that stuff, I took some pictures, and finally got around to cleaning up the ones I liked... So, I thought I'd share them here, mostly for Jesse and Paul - probably Chris too... anyone who's into this stuff.

They're coming back in April, and I'm planning on shelling out for a ride in the B-17 (and Paul I expect too).  I can't wait.

For most of these I tried to crop or paint the people out of them and then strip out some of the color to give them a more vintage feel... in any event:

Sweet!  I think I have pictures of that very same B-17!  I remember the nose art from the B-17 on display in Loveland, Co back in 2004.

Rob, were you referring to me?

Awesome looking stuff you've got there.  Next weekend in FW there is an air show.  I won't be able to make it due to parents being in town and we will be shopping for baby stuff, but it has always been a great show.  My reserve unit used to pull security out there, not sure if they still do though.

Yeah, I figured you'd get a kick out of that - and I should have been smart enough to mention Matt by name too (duh).

Is there a website for that air show?  I've never gone to one and have wanted to for some time.

Matt, that B-17 (and the rest of them) belong to the Collings Foundation (http://www.collingsfoundation.org/menu.htm) and apparently go on tour every Summer.  The airport here that they were flying out of is a mile or three away from where I work out and over the course of two weeks I spent a lot of time using the track outside so that I could be running around on the track and bleachers watching the planes fly right over my head on the paid flights.  So awesome.

The B-17 flights were $450, and the P-51 will run you $2300 for a half hour.   :o

But it's all tax deductible.   ;D

There you go.  One of my best friend's dad owns an old Stearman that he keeps out at Possum Kingdom airport.  It was the predecessor to the AT6 Texan that was used for pilot training.  The same guy helps manage The David Nicklas foundation, a charity for heart disease and a donor support group (this guy had a heart transplant and is going on 16 years now).  His foundation used to own an F86 Sabre and an F4U Corsair that they used to fly around to various air shows and for a donation to the foundation you could get some time in the plane.

Sadly I never got the chance to fly in either of the high performance fighters, but I did get to actually fly the Stearman this summer when we were out at the lake.

On the photography note, those are fantastic pics.  I wish I could find the pics from when I went to Bastogne.  My grandfather fought there as part of the relief force in the M18 Tank Destroyer and later the upgraded M36.  Matter of fact, I'll be getting his unit patch tattooed on my back or shoulder sometime soon.  At some point when I complete his ribbon rack I'm going to post the pic over in the WWII memorabilia thread.

Very Nice Pics.  I remember talking about this on the phone, and yes I am definately in when they come back to town.

That B-24 is nice. (oops WWIIAircraft always confuse me)

We were at an Airshow in Georgetown years ago doing displays and whatnot and a B-17 came in and during taxi one of the engines was spewing flames...not normal... so they took it into a hanger and that was that.   At the same airshow one of the pilots dropped a Stearman off the end of the runway into somebody's garage.  No injuries, but alas that was end of the show for the day.

And NO Jesse...Paul will not get one of those..Paul likes things that stay on the ground, (and talking in the third person for some reason)

Well glad you updated otherwise I'd have never seen all those other beautiful pics, too long between updates didn't even know this thread existed.  This is some really great work, you mentioned in an older post that some of the pics might wind up in a magazine or a book, did that ever pan out?
Now you should venture into taking pics of very hot nearly nude women, purely for artistic reasons of course  ;)

The article has been pushed because the editor wanted to put it in the same issue as another article on a similar subject.  So, theoretically this month or next month (not holding my breath), but I'll post here when it happens.

This isn't really a thread I update often... just when I get around to getting some new ones finished up. :)

But it's all tax deductible.   ;D

I think that's the group that was out here.  Another one to check out is the Commemorative Air Force (aka the Confederate Air Force) a friend of my family's who flew spitfires for the RAF and later the 8th Air Force (after America joined the war) is a member and they go to lots of airshows with the B-17, B-24 and I think a P-51.  Jack told me about the time he was shot down behind enemy lines and how he got back to the allies....it would make one of the coolest movies ever!

Again, great stuff and some awesome photos Rob.

There was a jeep there Paul and I... err, Jesse, knows you wanted it. :)

I took the picture of the jeep because when I was a kid my dad bought one and rebuilt the engine in it.  My parents ended up splitting up and it sort of derailed the project, so he never got it all cleaned up and restored cosmetically, but we used to haul around in it all the time.  It was loads of fun - loud, and slow. :)

This is one area we can probably find all sorts of common ground on.  8)

I'll try to look that up tomorrow.  It sounds familiar.  I think a co-worker was telling me about it... something similarly named that comes to Texas (some smaller town where this buddy of mine grew up)... I'll check with him about it again tomorrow.

The air show Chris mentioned on the last page looks intriguing.  I don't know if I'll make it out there this weekend, but I'm really not too into the stunt flying and the tumbling planes, just the Air Force stuff (new and old).  The performers list says there will be a P-40 out there, which might be enough to get me to try to drive over.

I can't believe I never responded to this... as funny as that is, this one's called the "Rape of the Sabine Women."  The Italian word directly translated means "rape" but in the context of the sculpture, it means 'kidnapping.'

If you ever wanted to know more than you probably want to know about it - there's a good Wiki (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Rape_of_the_Sabine_Women) for this piece.

That B-17 was flying around Dallas again this week.  The Liberator is here too, apparently the last one flying.

I'm heading down there Sunday to get some new pictures. :)

If you see them Rob, ask if there's a Jack Bradshaw there.  If he is, tell him Hamilton's nephew Matt says hello and ask him to tell you the story of how he was shot down over Germany in WWII.

Rob, I saw that B-17 Tuesday night on the way to play ball and was thrilled to death.  This morning my wife and I were out and saw the B-24, as well as a P-51 that was flying off it's wing, almost in an escort formation.  It was a sight to see, especially for a WWII buff like me.

Yep, that's the tour, except last year the Mitchell was here too (the Liberator wasn't).  All week I'm looking at the sky hoping to catch them flying around.

I just came across this thread, and man, the pictures of New Zealand are gorgeous.  Beautiful pictures of a beautiful country.  Nice job camera man!  I liked the black and whites of Rome too.  The picture of the turtle (and then some) in the Boboli Gardens is helluv funny.

Thanks!  The funny thing is that the camera keeps changing... the Rome stuff was done on a crappy Canon point and shoot.  New Zealand was the Digital Rebel kit... the Planes last year were the Rebel body with the new lens, and when I shoot the planes again tomorrow (weather permitting...) it'll be with the new 50d and the lens from last year.  I've been slowly upgrading for about 3 years now.

Chris, another note on this Bomber tour... I cheaped out this year but so help me, next year I'm taking a flight on one of them, probably Paul too.  If you've got the scratch for it and want to join us let me know and I'll make sure to contact you in March.

This sounds like a repeat of my post last year, but the prices are $425.00 for the 17 or the 24, $2300 for a half hour in the P-51 (it's on my bucket list, but I'm not doing that one any time soon).

(all tax deductible :) )

Last year I called and asked if I could pay like $500 for 5 minutes in the mustang and they explained to me that the engines cost about $80k and that they only get a certain number of take offs per engine, so they can't split it up.   :-\

Woah, very nice Rob.  I assume you've done all of that with Photoshop?  Very impressive.  It's great to remove all the junk so the entire focus is on the plane rather than being distracted by the objects around it.

Thanks Jesse. :)  Yeah it was all Photoshop.  For me what makes these things more than just tourist photos and more worthwhile or at least interesting is to make them look like they weren't taken at public showing with a bunch of (basically) tourists fawning all over it.  Unless a person is the subject, I hate having people in my pictures - you'll probably see that theme in most of the stuff I've put in this thread.  Getting cropped close ups of these things like that is easy but getting a full wide-shot is basically impossible.

I usually fix these up in 5 to 10 minutes but I spent somewhere between 6 and 8 hours on this one.  The tail wheel and the big yellow R came from entirely different photos... painting the people off the tail of the plane took a long time and I went as far as removing the reflection of the orange ladder from the underside of the wing.  Stuff you don't see too much at this size but makes a big difference in the larger image.

I actually got to hang out in the cockpit of one of those B-17's... They've done a ton of work since then, it seems. Awesome photography, Rob.

What do you mean that they've done a ton of work since then?  Were you in a different one or something?  This one's been flying for 10 or 15 years (longer?) as far as I know.

Was that Liberator silver?  When I was getting my motorcycle license a few years ago one flew overhead and it looked gorgeous!

Dark green.  After digging around a little I found out that there are two type of Liberators, the one that was here was the last of it's type, and there are two of the other type still flying.

Ahh.  I think the one I saw is THIS ONE (http://www.collingsfoundation.org/tour_b-24j.htm).  It's the only B-24J that's still flying.

Unless the Collings Foundation has two of them, then you saw a different one, because that's the one that was in Dallas.

By that I meant judging by your photos, the interior of the Nine-o-Nine is much improved/restored from the time I crawled around in it. When I last saw it, the interior had been totally stripped. Even the fuselage guns look better.

The Liberator they had here, with the Fortress, was silver. Formerly the All American, I believe.
