I know some people's favorites, not everyones though. I'll start out
First and above all others are my boys:
Pearl Jam
I've been to two of their shows and am lucky enough to go three more times this summer. All of the crap they go the extra mile for with us the fans is amazing. Full concert bootlegs a week after the show for $15 a piece. Charging standard price for floor seats in the front few rows. Christmas Records every year. $13 for T-Shirts at the show and I could go on and on.
Beyond them I really enjoy Grunge
Soundgarden
Nirvana
Alice in Chains
Stone Temple Pilots
And then these bands or solo acts also tickle my fancy
The Beatles
Led Zeppelin
Guns n' f'n Roses
Smashing Pumpkins (and Zwan)
Dave Matthews Band
Ben Harper
Natalie Merchant
The Who
Neil Young
The Black Crowes
Radiohead
U2
Nat King Cole
Bing Crosby
Blind Melon (highly under rated)
And then let's not forget Jazz
Miles
Coltrane
Monk
Getz
Mingus
Brubeck
Guilardi
We can do bands you hate later on :P
-
Soundgarden and AIC are probably in my top three along with Zeppelin.
My tastes are pretty much the same as yours, Scott. While not as big a fan of PJ as you, I do listen to them. I really would love to see them live, but nobody really wants to go :o
As for bands not mentioned:
I've seen Aerosmith three times (with a possible fourth this summer) and have never been disappointed, although I did enjoy the arena show (Worcester Centrum) more than the two outdoor shows, but I think that had to do with acoustics. My wife absolutely loves Joe Perry.
Metallica: Never saw them live (and don't want to pay big bucks to see them tour with Limp Bizkit and the tool of all tools, Fred Durst) While many people bash their records post And Justice for All, I actually enjoyed them. They've grown as artists and change styles. While the speed metal style of MoP and RtL was great in its own way, so are their other albums. And I enjoyed S&M immensely.
And now for the guilty pleasure artist:
Bon Jovi: IMO, just go old fashion rock and roll with catchy lyrics. Even if you're not a fan, I can bet you can see along to at least one of their songs.
-
I'll start by listing the ones at the very top of my list:

3 Canuckleheads not listing Neil Young :'(
Go check my birthday wish to membraneman. Surprised no one caught it there.
Neil Young is fine, but not really the type of music I typically listen to. I had the (mis)fortune of seeing him once in concert. Everyone was expecting the classic stuff and he predominantly played stuff from his then new country album. No Cinnamon Girl, no Southern Man. It's his show, but I won't say I wasn't dissappointed.

I have nothing but respect for that ol' Ontario boy Neil Young. But I was listing BANDS.
Notable solo artists I didn't list:
Neil Young
Bob Marley
Joni Mitchell (another Canuck)
Hendrix
Tom Petty
-
I guess you have me on a technicality DP :-* Although Petty usually has the Heartbreakers and Neil usually has Crazy Horse (or Crosby, Stills and Nash)
-
I'm not one of the modern rockers like the rest of the gang here, so I'll likely get teased when I say my favorite band is probably the Eagles.
On the slightly harder rock side of things (though still a bit dated), I always dig listening to some Van Halen too!
-
at this moment
Jane's Addiction
Audioslave
KottonmouthKings
-
Hendrix, Zeppelin, Journey, etc, basically all that old stuff. Korn from time to time, sometimes even Eminem. Classical, from Wagner to John Williams... etc.
-
sometimes even Eminem.
I don't think Eminem qualifies as a band AE! John Williams either (though I certainly dig his work). ;)
I definitely enjoy listening to Journey as well, so good call on that one though!
-
Eminem isn't a band, right, but John Williams isn't **** without an orchestra, so I think he qualifies as a "band" to some extent. :-\
-
John Williams isn't **** without an orchestra, so I think he qualifies as a "band" to some extent. :-\
Fair enough, I'll give you that one! We'll just say that the Boston Pops is (was) his "band"! 8)

I posted this over at Galactic Hunter last night when I got home from the show...here it is my pseudo review of 2 Pearl Jam concerts :-*
Wow is my head spinning right now. Just got back from my second show in as many nights...
Every PJ show I go to has something I have remembered for ever and the last two have been no exception
Fargo
We got the Fan Club line around 11 yesterday morning and were about the 50th person in line. We waited around drinking beer inside the Fargo dome until the handed out tickets at 3:30. My brother and me were giddy with anticipation as we stepped up the window and pulled 4 seats in 4th row center stage. My jaw absolutely hit the floor. I basically crapped my pants when I saw where we were sitting. I took around 20 shots on a disposable camera so once I get it developed you all can see.
The show was good but not great, Ed was sick and had a sore throat and so he wasn't in the highest of spirits. Jeff's family was in attendence and so they kept showing them in the crowd. The absolute highlight for me though was during Crazy Mary...
Take a Bottle, Drink it Down, Pass it Around
Ed passed his wine bottle out into the crowd and it snakes right to where we were sitting. I took a long pull off the bottle and was in absolute bliss. Baba closed the set which was f'n amazing and something I have always wanted to hear live. Two of my other favorites were Porch and Rearview which cannot be beat live. It was great fun though and would have been awesome if Ed was feeling better
Saint Paul
I just walked in the door and like I said my head is still swimming. It was seriously like Pearl Jam's greatest hits tonight off the top of my head I know they played:
Wishlist
Betterman
Small Town
Rearviewmirror
Given to Fly
I am Mine
Alive
Black
Immortality
Daughter
Even Flow
Corduroy
State of Love and Trust
Elderly Woman
Save You
Ed you could tell was still a little sick but he sang his guts out mainly because the crowd was absoultely amazing.
Someone threw a cell phone at him and he picked up and sang Alive into it...
Somne guy asked him to sing Lukin and he said his voice couldn't handle it then asked if he knew the words, he then got to come up on stage and proceeded to just go nuts and sang the heck out the song. Him and Ed then did about 5 or 6 jumps to end it...
As we were nearing the end I leaned over to my brother and we were both just sweating and dying from jumping and dancing and screaming and singing and I said...
"I don't care if they play Rockin in the Free World or Yellow Ledbetter...that would make this the greatest show ever"
Out comes Rockin, up go the house lights and the crowd just goes nuts. One of my all time favorite songs and they just nail it, people are pogoing all over and clapping and screaming along and the crowd goes nuts at the end thinking it's the end. Mike hold up his hand and goes into Yellow Ledbetter and I just about collapse. This was my 4th show and I have never heard this song live. It is probably my all time favorite song and it will always always have a special place in my heart and take me back to 1993-1994 again. It was absoultely amazing and by exceeds anything I have seen before from them.
I sat in the 17th row tonight...we slept in today since we got home last night around 4 AM.
One thing people don't realize until you see them live to is how awesome Mike McCready is...he makes the bands show. He pointed at me in Fargo and we smiled it was pretty cool.
I am going to my last show of 2003 on Saturday in Alpine Valley, Wisconsin...looking forward to it but after tonight I have seen it all and have one for ever
Keep on Rockin' in the Free World!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
-

You know what's funny, is that I've been thinking that your new avatar was of that bisexual chick named Aneesa that was on Real World - Chicago last year on MTV. Never heard of Fefe...
On the way home, the local classic rock station was playing Keep On Lovin' You by REO Speedwagon. Got me really excited with many flashbacks to days of old, so I sang along at the top of my lungs. Therefore, at this moment, I'd have to say my favorite band in the whole world is REO Speedwagon. When's their next album due out?
Virex, sorry bud - but I don't think most of the artists you listed there qualify as "bands". I think you'd be better suited to go with the Bangles and such...
-
She kind of does look like Anessa :

I just got finished reading "Slash" by, Slash and his co-writer, Anthony Bozza. It's a great read on his life if you are interested.
It got me to thinking about my favorite bands so I thought I'd pose this question for all. Being a child born in the mid 70's, the mid 80's to 90's rock had the biggest influence on what I like to listen to this day. I have handful of bands that I just love listening to and a few more that are catching my attention.
First, I'm a huge fan of the original Guns N Roses, with the original lineup. I loved their albums up to the Use Your Illusion set. I haven't listened to much of the new album, and don't really think I will. What always got me where the cool guitar riffs and without Slash or Duff tearing it up, it just hasn't had the same place for me. I've listened a lot lately to Velvet Revolver and think I'm becoming a fan.
I'm also a fan of Aerosmith, but none of the crap after the mid 90's...that **** all sounds the same. I loved all their 70's and 80's stuff, with my favorite album being Permanent Vacation. I have to claim having a guilty pleasure of Poison, but I can only stand the glam metal for so long, as so much of it sounds the same.
On a side note, I've been reinspired lately by reading the book and talking to a few buddies to pick up the guitar, and start something I just barely started a long time ago. I run the soundboard for my church, I've run the sound before for a buddy when he had a band, and now I want to get back into the music thing and learn to do something else. Years ago I tried the guitar, but didn't have a ton of dexterity in my fingers, and was more interested in playing ball than learning the guitar, well now I want to get back into it and actually do it this time.
Wow, I must be really bored already today.
-
I'm a prog guy. Genesis really speaks to me and has been my all time favorite since high school. The best material was written by Tony Banks and Steve Hackett, however, I consider Super's Ready, written by all, a true masterpiece. It's one of the few songs I can never get tired of listening to over and over.
-
Guns N' Roses is my favorite band but close follow-ups are Pink Floyd, Tool, Porcupine Tree, Opeth, and Type O Negative.
-
I really got into music with the '80s (Hair)Metal and '90's Alternative bands. That being said I've got a bunch of bands that I really like listening to. By era, I'd have to go with the following:
80's - Metallica, Guns N' Roses, Motley Crue, Ratt
90's - Nine Inch Nails, Ministry, Radiohead, Stone Temple Pilots, Pearl Jam
-
My favorite is Stevie Ray Vaughan and Double Trouble. Sure he's a bit too early for me to have been a fan, I was 9 when he died, but you just can't beat his technique. I like In Step because of the maturity his sound has, and even though its very polished, you can still feel the amazing depth and strength behind it, but you just can't beat the raw power and blinding speed in Texas Flood.
-
My favorite genre is metal/hard rock, and my favorite band would have to be Led Zeppelin. Runner ups would be Metallica, Pink Floyd, Iron Maiden, The Beatles, Slayer, Priest, Sabbath, Megadeth, bands along those lines. I also like a little alternative rock and blues.
-
I would have to say Sepultura - back when it had Max Cavalera as lead singer. Major stress reliever there. Metallica would take second even though they lost me after their black album and Korn would be my third.
-
Pink Floyd always stands out, but I also like these:
-Dada
-Almighty Ultrasound
-System of a Down
-NIN
-Billy Joel
-Iron Maiden
-Tool
My music tastes are very eclectic.
-
My musical tastes generally go all over the place, but here are a few favorites.
Genesis (particularly Duke and earlier)
Frank Zappa
Tool
Sleepytime Gorilla Museum
John
