OT "Alien" Names: Old School or New School?
« on: December 21, 2005, 11:29 AM »
With the announcement of the upcoming Momaw Nadon/Hammerhead figure, it got me to thinking about the vintage line again.  Although I'm familiar with all the newer names for these figures, I still look at this character/figure and think "Hammerhead".  Maybe it is nostalgia, but I kind of like those simpler names for some reason.  Nothing against the new ones either, which are also fine.  Which names do you prefer?  Are you more of a Hammerhead, Walrusman, Squidhead, Yakface, and Pruneface person, or do you prefer Momaw Nadon, Ponda Baba, Tessek, Saelt Marae and Orrimaarko?

I think of the Old School names as the characters' nick names. Mawmaw "Hammerhead" Nadon, it works for me. I think I'll always prefer the Vintage names just for nostalgic sake, though.

I like to give vintage style nick names to PT characters, too... like Aayla "Blue Babe" Secura.

For the curious, and those who aren't as well, the name "Hammerhead" still exists in SW lore, it's just considered a derogatory term for the species...  Kind of interesting I think.  I believe West End Games ran with that ball and it is fun keeping it part of Star Wars to call an Ithorian a "Hammerhead", but of course they have names too...

I call them both by their EU and Kenner names at times...  And Greedo was Brocolli Man to me because that's what I knew him as when I was little.  Didn't even have that name on his card, it just was what I knew him as before SW was something I got into at all.

I am sure most people have seen this article but its still fun to both reread it and show where most of the stuff back then was coming from

I guess I'm such a hardcore purist that official names mean nothing to me unless they were named in the original films.  Otherwise, doesn't bother me to see the names on the cards as long as there isn't much artistic license with the likenesses.

I use two names for one character, like HammerNadon or MomawHead, or WalrusBaba or PondaMan. Very strange habit.

Personally, I call them both.
It really doesn't matter at all to me but the funny thing is when I say for example Momaw Nadon I get a blank look from the wife but if I say Hammerhead she knows who I mean.

I use them both, but like the "creativity" of the old names.

I use both.  I, too, like the "creativity" of the old names. It's fun when the newer names given in the prequels reflect that (inserting people's names like Coleman Trebor or manking them anagrams of something).

The "new" names for characters make sense, despite the fact that I grew up with the old names. For some reason, they are a lot easier for me to swallow than say, Greedo shooting first.
