Watto's Junk Yard / A fond farewell, to our dear friend OCB...
« on: February 10, 2005, 09:46 PM »
It's recently been brought to our attention behind the scenes here at JD that we're losing one of our finest...  Actually, the finest.

OCB/Scott is officially hangin' 'em up - both as a Staff Member here at JediDefender, and to a lesser extent, as a collector and forum member as well.  Sometimes our priorities in life evolve, and though Scott's been considering making some changes for a while now, it took that horrible car accident to really bring his decision to fruition.  As a husband and father of two, Scott's going to be focusing on the family more now, as well as some new responsibilities at his job.  Though it deeply saddens us to see him go, we understand his situation and fully respect and support this decision that he's made.  The good news (for us) is that Scott promises to still stop in from time to time to keep up with the old gang here...

Personally, I can't say thanks enough to Scott for all of his contributions both to this site, and even moreso to the greater collecting community as a whole, in which he's become one of it's icons.  Would anyone have ever heard of ICMG without Scott's actions?  Highly doubtful.  Would we have gotten the Blue AND Brown Hoth Hans last year without his fine debating skills and color splotches?  No way.  Would we have ever found out what GNT looks like?  Nuh-uh.  Would you be reading these posts here at JD right now without him molding this community into such a tight-knit group of friends?  Nope.

Scott's the one that brought me aboard 2 1/2 years ago, showed me (and others) the ropes, and helped us turn JD into one of the premiere Star Wars collecting sites on the net.  JD very well might not even exist today, if not for Scott's Herculian efforts.  Not to mention, it's no secret that he's at or near the top of just about everyone's favorite forum member lists out there, and has been for many years.  He's always been the fun, quick-witted, hip collecting compadre that makes this forum go, and to some of us, he's also become a good friend.

So without further ado, and before I get too much more ******' sappy here, let's all show our gratitude for Scott's efforts, and bid a fond farewell to our good friend.  Best wishes in your future endeavors Scott, and you make sure you stop by and visit us from time to time buddy.  We're gonna miss you...   :'(

- Matt

P.S.  We already had a bit of a going away party in OCB's honor the other night.  So cheers to Scott from me, Jared, Deanpaul, and in keeping with JD tradition - of course, the Hooters girls!   ;)

That sucks that Target just changed their mind and decided to pass on this line after all...

Or maybe not.   ;)

Looks like Target's in on these exclusives as well.  Odd that Walmart and Target would be sharing different exclusives from the same line of old ships, including a couple of the identical ships getting shared...  Or are they not the Diecast versions, and are instead just the old MicroMachine ones?  Hard to tell really...  I guess it's probably the latter, now that I think about it.

Are the figures from the former Micro Machine line, or what?  Actually, after scoping out the larger shots, they almost look like they're all new...   ???

Clone Wars '03-'05 / DVD 3-packs. Ugh.
« on: January 26, 2005, 02:46 PM »
Well, it looks like we're gonna be getting some more DVD 3-packs, this time for the Clone Wars season 1 & 2 DVD release.  This probably mostly just affects (annoys) the completist carded/packaged collectors, though I think they do look kinda spiffy.  Just not excited to buy more packaging variations on stuff I've already got several times over now.  But hey, that what I do.  :-[

Here's a shot of 'em, courtesy of Mousedroid.com:

So, who else is buying these besides Jared and I...?   :P

Feedback / soggybottomboy2469's feedback
« on: January 25, 2005, 02:26 PM »
I see soggybottomboy2469 has finally gotten hit butt over here to JD and registered, so I guess I'll get him started with a little feedback since we just completed a trade for some WOTC minis.  Smooth sailing all the way.  Good communication, fast shipping, etc.  Highly recommended to all JD'ers for their trading needs.   8)

Thanks Brian!  Hopefully we can do it again sometime...

« on: December 17, 2004, 05:18 PM »
I accidentally won two seperate auctions for the Series 3 Kubricks (just the standard line of 6, no chases), so I'm selling one of them for cheap!  If anyone's interested in Series 3 (in opened boxes, but sealed bags) for just $49 shipped (in the U.S., maybe a little more for Canada), then please drop me a line!

Series 3 includes the following (as pictured below):

C-3PO
Lando Calrissian
AT-AT Driver
Jawa
Wickett
Han in Carbonite Block

Probably won't find cheaper than $49 shipped for this Series, so holler if you need 'em!  Thanks.

In recent years, we've had several new additions to the family, either through marriage or birth, which has even further increased the number of people we have to shop for now.  Not to mention the couple married additions technically bring an entire new family into the picture.  So we've got about 25 family members that we shop for now, some more extensively than others.

Then, add in all my wife's friends and their children, who Patty absolutely MUST give gifts to as well, and we're close to double that - somewhere in the mid to upper 40s.  Totally out of control IMO, and expensive as all hell!  Wasn't so bad in previous years when my firm was handing out some very sizeable Holiday bonuses, but over the last couple years they've severely tightened the purse strings and cut back, which makes the craziness of our gift giving quite a bit tougher on the check book.

Generally, for our immediate family members, we usually spend about $75 a pop, secondary ones are more in the $35 - $40 range, and friends and such are coming in between $10 - $20.  Ouch.

On a related note, Patty often likes to host several Holiday parties during December, most of which are often at our own expense.  Then there's chipping in for gifts for the 3 partners at our firm, several Holiday gift exchanges with others, and who knows what else I can't remember right now...

Don't get me wrong, as I enjoy giving gifts to friends and loved ones as much as the next person.  I just tend to think that we may be going overboard with it just a little.  Anyone else go through this insanity as well?

What's your level of gift giving during the Christmas/Holiday season...?

Revenge of the Sith / "Evolutions" assortment...
« on: December 7, 2004, 04:02 PM »
One of the new blurbs from Action-Figure.com mentions this:

Quote
Autumn 2005
Evolutions Assortment: Awesome 3-pack showing the changes the characters have made throughout the Star Wars movies. Wave 1 features Anakin (good), Anakin (bad) & Darth Vader.

Very cool idea.  What else do you guys expect to see, or would like to see in this line?  I guess some of the more obvious choices would be:

Obi-Wan TPM/AOTC or ROTS/ANH

Palpatine Senator/Chancellor/ROTJ madman

Not sure how "evolutionary" they're wanting to go with this, but I'd like to see some OT only assortments, of:

Tatooine Luke/Bespin Luke/Jedi Luke

Cantina Han/Bespin Han/Endor Han

ANH Leia/Bespin Leia/Slave Leia

ANH R2/ESB R2/ROTJ R2...  Oh wait, that one doesn't work too well now, does it?!   :P

So whaddaya guys want to see from this line?  Hopefully they keep it at a tolerable $15 price point, but it'll likely hit $20 as most 3-packs usually do...

Watto's Junk Yard / JediDefender Secret Santa - 2004!!
« on: November 23, 2004, 11:33 PM »
Alright, it's almost that time of year again.  And as much as I hate to see/hear Christmas stuff before Thanksgiving, we're gonna go ahead and get the ball rolling on the 2nd annual JediDefender Secret Santa gift exchange so everyone has plenty of time to "shop".  Big thanks to Wayne/Reconsgt for bringing about the original one last year!  We had a lot of fun with it, and exchanged a lot of cool SW (and non-SW) goodies, so if you're interested in partaking in the festivities this year, then go ahead and give us a holler here, and we'll sign you up!

This is pretty much just like most Secret Santa games you've probably been involved with in the past.  We're gonna have a sign up list, and then draw names out of a hat, at which point everyone will be assigned another JD member to send a gift to.  Usually helps if everyone gets their trade list wants up to speed and bumped in the trading forum, so your Secret Santa knows what may be of interest to you.  No real dollar limit perse.  Anything from $5 to $50 is just fine - whatever you feel comfortable with.  We probably averaged about $20 a gift in last year's exchange, if that'll help give you a ballpark number to roll with.  I'll go ahead and take down everyone's addresses too, and will PM them to whoever gets assigned that respective person.

Feel free to browse folks' trade/want lists here, or have another member do a little "third party investigating" on your behalf, or just find some fun stuff all on your own.  So with that said, let's get the sign ups going here, and have some fun!  We'll probably run the sign-up for about a week and a half.  I think that's everything for now, but feel free to give us a shout if you've got any questions about the gift exchange.  So without further ado...

Watto's Junk Yard / What stresses you out?
« on: November 23, 2004, 07:58 PM »
My work's been stressing the **** outta me lately, specifically the fact that we're always running over budget on all of our auditing jobs.  We seem to intentionally low-ball our estimates of completion to our clients, in order to land the job in the first place.  Then we blow through our entire budget about HALF way through the job, and after that the **** hits the fan and the stress level goes up immensely.  We even kid ourselves (or at least the partners do) into thinking we can achieve these phony budgets we throw out there.  Then it lands on all of us grunts who actually DO the work.

Get it done faster!  Be more efficient!  Are you done yet?  Are you done yet?!  Are you done yet?!  The client's getting impatient, and upset at the charges, and won't pay anything more until they see a finished product or settlement check.  So hurry up!  Get it done, but don't work on it anymore, or we'll have to bill them more money which they'll refuse to pay.  Pretty much a Catch-22 all the way around...   :-\

Plus the fact that we have to keep approximately 90% of our hours worked during the day as billable.  Yet if we work more billable hours, we have to charge the clients for it, and then we get yelled at for being overbudget.  Etc, etc, etc...  Deadly cycle, and an extremely stressful one on pretty much a daily basis around here.

On the homefront, painting stresses me out.  I don't mind doing it really, but with my meticulous and perfectionist ways, painting just one room can take me an entire week (or more).  Painting the whole interior of the house, which is my current undertaking, is completely overwhelming at this point.  When I start feeling overwhelmed and stressed out, I tend to shove the project aside and procrastinate.  That of course drives the wife nuts, then I get prodded and scolded by her, which in turn stresses me out even more.  And don't even suggest we get painters, or I get some help with the project, 'cause my OCD won't allow anyone else (including my wife) to assist with the painting.

Then of course driving often stresses me out, but we often discuss that in the "Things that piss you off" thread, so I'll not get into that one here...

Those are just the couple main points of stress in my life right now.  There's plenty of smaller ones though (like when the Lakers lose), but I'm not going to nitpick those just yet.

So what stresses you guys out, on either a daily, or less consistent basis?

JD Sports Forum! / NBA 2004/05
« on: November 3, 2004, 04:47 PM »
OK, the new NBA season has officially started, and as such, I suppose it's time to finally move on from last year's thread and start anew.  So fire away with your picks, thoughts, and love for all things Kobe...   :P

I'll start out by saying I think the Lakers are going to still be pretty competitive this year, and are really going to surprise a lot of the naysayers who've been dumping on them and doubting them since Kobe forced out they got rid of Shaq and Phil.

We played surprisingly well in the Pre-season, going 5-2 I think, and got off to a pretty nice start against a highly overrated Nuggets team last night.  Kobe's been shooting like **** for the most part, so that's going to be a concern if he reverts back to not wanting to pass the ball.  But so far, he's been sharing it pretty well with his teammates, and to make up for his poor shooting %, he's been draining it from the line to the tune of about 12 per game (pre-season and last night).  So he's still getting his points, of course.  7 assists last night too, so that's a good sign.  But I'd guess he's coming out of the blocks on a slightly conservative level, so the national press doesn't dive down his throat for shooting it 30+ times per game.  And I'll add that without Shaq drawing the defense in, Kobe's definitely going to have a much harder time getting decent, open looks.  Gonna be seeing a lot more double and triple teams I'd imagine, so he better keep it up with the passing game he's been showing lately.  I'm definitely expecting a subpar shooting % from him this season though.   :-\

Thing of beauty to see little known Chris Mihm come in for Shaq, and toss down career highs of 24 points and 12 boards last night.  Sweet!  Even better if Shaq's injured, and can't make Miami's season opener tonight.  If that continues (as it has for the past 3 seasons when Shaq's missed 15 games in each), that'll make Jerry Buss look a little better for not wanting to pay top dollar for perenially damaged goods (as if he had a choice)...

Anyway, I predict the Lakers will be fighting for the #4 spot in the West (with Dallas and Houston), and home court advantage in the first round of the playoffs.  I think the Spurs, Wolves and Kings should take the top 3 spots though.  I'll toss the rest of my picks in here later.

So what's the NBA vibe everyone else is feeling?

I just noticed over in Dustrho's Chicagoland Expo thread in the Conventions Forum that Christine Hewett ("Tonika Twin") would be making an autograph appearance there!  First I've ever heard of either of them hitting the SW autograph circuit, and/or getting involved in the SW universe/saga again.

I think this is potentially a very hopeful sign that maybe they (or at least she) will finally approve their likeness rights over to Hasbro so we can finally get a Tonikka Sister figure or two made!  I'm sure she'll be getting hounded with this question by the SW collecting fans in attendance at the show (and future shows, if she continues to sign), so hopefully that will turn up the heat/pressure on her to finally say OK, or at least to realize it's not such a big deal after all...

Whaddaya guys think?  Do we have a prayer here?  Even if just this Christine lady agrees, but the other lady doesn't, that means we should at least be able to get one Tonikka figure, which in turn could be easily customized into the other.

This is assuming the whole rumored "they won't sign their likenesses over" issue is indeed a true one, of course.  Which I still find rather strange/unbelievable.  Maybe someone in attendence (Chris?) could actually ask them if that's indeed the true story...   ;)

Watto's Junk Yard / Congratulations to the bride to be! Carrie!!
« on: September 1, 2004, 05:00 AM »
News on my end: I met an amazing man and I'll be getting married in three weeks.

No ****?!  Wow, that's awesome Carrie!  Congrats!!!  You gonna give us any more of a scoop than that, or is he just gonna remain a mystery man?  Regardless, glad you found your true love, and are tying the knot!

One question though, and I'm sure most of the other JD'ers are wondering as well...  Where the hell are our invitations to the big show?  You can't possibly be procrastinating this bad on them, can you?

So I guess any future mud wrestling tournaments are canceled then?   :-\

Dale, we need some proper greamlins in here, QUICK!   :-*
