New Photos for February of 2020... theoretically this is the last set before we buy a place and I get a little more space...

I was lucky to see this in person earlier this year – the pictures look amazing Rob. You've done a great job of arranging and grouping the different figures together. It's really impressive, especially all of the free standing figures that don't have stands.

Thanks for taking the time to share these!

Proof to my wife that I'm not nearly so nutty as others.  Impressive Rob, most impressive.  A little narrow on the focus but we can't all be perfect.

Wow!  Good stuff Rob.

How do you keep it so clean?

I am both amazed and jealous. :P

That is a GREAT collection. I like how everything is organized by scenes, and how you blend in POTF2 stuff with more recent stuff.

Wow!  Good stuff Rob.

How do you keep it so clean?

It's nearly impossible.  It looks pretty clean in the pictures because I just recently spent a large number of hours taking everything down, dusting it all, and re-assembling it.

3 weeks from now it will all be dusty again, and will probably collect dust until next year when I gather up the energy to do it all again.

I'm also going to shop around for some type of air purifier later this year to hopefully reduce the amount of dust in the room - but it's generally an uphill battle.

There's tons of other stuff I want to collect - namely Kotobukiya and Gentle Giant - but don't for money reasons, and space reasons.  Someday though.

I've also stopped doing 12" since Sideshow aquired it.  Their product is amazing and makes the line a billion times better, but I can't justify $50.00 on a 12" figure that I'm going to open anyway.  Most of the ones I have I bought at shows for less than $10.00 a piece...

I'd also like to collect horror movie toys like I used to - but there just isn't a place for them...  :'(

Fair enough.  Same reason I'm selling off some of my stuff - too much space taken up and too much money going elsewhere.  I can't compete with the army building prowess you have, so I'm opting for small squads and that'll have to do.

Again, just impressive.

You boast the greatest collection I have ever seen online or otherwise. That setup looks great. I've seen so many loose collections look like hell, but this one is just amazing.

Now tell me....how frustrated do you get when one figure just randomly lands on your keyboard? ;)

Thanks!   It doesn't frustrate me at all, that's my girlfriend's desk - bless her heart.

A sneak preview clone trooper fell into a coffee mug once - I found the gun but didn't find the trooper until 3 days later, his arms and legs were completely brown.

Thanks Brent.   I've told myself that I'm participating in the great collector's challenge this year (without inhibiting my purchasing) to see what exactly I spend in a year.  My goal is going to be to reduce that number next year - and given the EU focus and some of the crap they showed at comic-con, it might not be too difficult to do.

Is it my understanding that you don't use stands?

How do you sleep at night knowing that they could all fall over just like dominoes?

 ;)

There are about 5 or 10 figures with stands - about 3 or 4 12" figures with stands.

Falls happen, but it's pretty rare thankfully.

Cool - I forgot to ask, but is that a complete loose set of vintage figures I see?

Title: Re: Finally took pictures of my collection...

Close.  I'm missing:

A-Wing Pilot
Han and Carbonite
Luke (Star Wars)
Leia (Star Wars)
Artoo (Star Wars)
Artoo (POTF)
Stormtrooper Luke
Yak Face
Blue Snaggletooth
And the Max Rebo Band.

And I want to replace the Warok eventually, his bow is repro (which I'm not cool with) and his belly is all yellow, because he's one of the few remaining SW toys from when I was a kid.

Wow.  Amazing collection and set up Rob, thanks for sharing pictures.  You really have everything looking nice and organized, even with having so many figures on display like that.  It looks really great.  I like how you have your ships displayed hanging as well, I bet that helps with shelf space.  Great collection.

it looks great personly I try to do one of each.  At one point I was doing some army building but I desided to just make it simple.  I do have some carded stuff of the harder to find stuff but there is an open one of it as well.  There was a couple things in there I was missing mostly the 3 new unleashed and a figure or two but you did make it all look great.  Personly I didn't do hasbros 12" I have a few that I liked the rest I skipped on.  I now do the sideshow stuff though.

I'm rounding to the nearest foot here, but it's about 13' x 18' with 12' ceilings.

Thanks everyone else for the compliments!   :)

Since there may be a few folks dropping in from Snowtroopers - I thought I'd add that I do have some Snowtroopers in there - but I'm holding out for the rumored VTSC version before I stock up.

Also, it does snow in Texas - but only once or twice a year if we're lucky :)

Simply amazing man I commented on a thread over at snowtroopers actually on how I like the way you hung the rocks up with the ships I think that was just brilliant.

Didn't you guys get smacked with s snow storm last year? I think at least accross north Texas got it anyways.

Again nice collection !!!

Thanks!

The asteroids actually came from a commercial shoot I worked back when OTC was hitting stores for the Millenium Falcon - after they were done with the set they filled a trash bag up for a buddy and me with all of them.  I didn't even have to tie them up, they already had fishing line on them. :)

The snow pretty much missed us in Dallas last year - Oklahoma got it pretty good.

The picture there was from 3 years ago - my first year in Texas.  Hopefully we'll get some more this year.

They're painted styrofoam chunks.  They're actually pretty crappy if you look at them up close - I just used them instead of making my own because of where they came from.

BTW no wonder I can't find stuff in the stores. You have it all!  ;)

It's insured as part of my personal property insurance - I've got a flat value of insurance that supposedly covers everything inside my home.

UPDATE:  03/11/07 - all new photos in the first post of the thread.  Some new figures, lots of new carded Saga, and I moved the UCS Legos to the top shelf of the one wall to create a new area for Gentle Giant busts.  A handful of vehicles had to go into the closet to make that happen.

What a great update Rob - truly enjoyable to look through.  I must say the black shelves against the white walls add a nice "edge" to the presentation.

Sometime around September I'm going to be moving all the loose figures onto the other wall and putting the 12" and lego where the loose figures are now.  I just flat out need more space for them and don't have anywhere else to go.  So I think I'll do another photo update then.

There are lots of new acquisitions that aren't in the pictures...   :P

Started re-working the room this week.  The Gentle Giant wall is all set - now I took all the legos and 12" down and expanded the shelving on that wall.  I'm moving the loose figures to this wall - should be about  25% more room for those.  Legos and 12" will go onto the other wall.

Updated the pictures back in the first post - the room is all done for now.

Swapped the big walls, expanded the Gentle Giant section... Burger King and Unleashed are in the closet.  Should have a little bit of room to expand loose-figure wise.  Running out of room for carded on the walls very quickly.

That's the current strategy.  I'm seriously debating getting out of the carded game - at 27, I'm starting to feel like I could better spend some of my money in a place other than buying duplicates.

Great article on your collection. The comments were pretty funny. Too bad there are always people that feel the need to tear someone down just to make their empty lives feel better.

That's the first time I've seen your collection Rob. It's most impressive! I really like it. I wonder what my collection would look like if I got everything out and put it up in the same style you have. I'm really impressed with the lego sets you have. I've always wanted to collect lego but there isn't enough room to keep them together and on display.

Have you ever considered getting some custom made cabinets and maybe decorating the room to some star wars planet or star destroyer simular to Wise's room? That will make it look less like a storage room and would really show off the figures. That's something I'm planning for my star wars room during an extensive house remodel. One thing I'm planning is to build a fiber optic star scape ceiling to hang my ships from. I like how you added the rocks for asteroids. It's a great touch.

Is this room filled to capacity now?

Thanks!  The larger legos definitely eat up a lot of space - especially the Falcons.  I have the Star Destroyer boxed up because there's no where to put it and it's too wide for the shelves I use.

I've never thought about doing anything custom for this home because a few years from now I'm expecting us to have moved into something bigger.  The asteroids actually came from a Hasbro Star Wars commercial shoot I was on a few years ago for the OTC Falcon and TIE Fighter.  Afterwards my friend and I asked if we could have them, and they gave us a trash bag full.

Is this room filled to capacity now?

Pretty much.  I'm out of wall space and am looking to sell all my carded figures to get some space back, and because I decided that I was all done buying 2 of everything.

Congrats Rob. A great read and loved seeing those images again.  8)

I do have a large amount of stuff but i wouldnt say its better than anothers  :). The problem is that none of it is on display. I honestly would love to display it all and post some pics. I guess thats the problem with living in an apartment. The next time I break out my vintage stuff I will try to take some pics of that.

New photos are up!

Since about April I've been selling off the carded collection, the 12", prequel legos, most of the loose vehicles, and a bunch of the random miscellaneous things. I'm now down to OT legos (boxed up for now), loose Hasbro, loose vintage, and gentle giant mini busts. The TV pictured near the end came out of the sale of the carded figures, so I thought I'd include it. I've been working overtime to fill in holes in the Hasbro wall, which is now 12' across with 9 shelves on a 12' high wall. To the best of my knowledge, the only thing I'm missing in there is the Elite 181st Pilot and a Toy Fair Vader. I also need 4 more vintage figures to finish up that set.

So there you have it. When I re-did the wall over the last few weeks, I pulled a little over 100 figures out, mostly army builders, and have them listed in my for sale thread (link in the sig-line if you're interested).

Thanks for looking.

If by any chance any of you guys notice a figure or sculpt that's missing, please do let me know - it's about impossible to have a complete set, but I'm really really close. I'm also interested in major variations (like tan vest vs. gray vest Jedi Luke or the blue-coat vs. brown coat Hans (which are in there)).

Post by: Rob on September 20, 2008, 01:32 AM
Thanks guys - it was indeed a lot of work.  3 solid weekends (including the Labor Day holiday weekend) and a few evenings in between to take down the old shelves, fill all the holes and paint, get the cabinets, build them, move everything around, take everything apart, add 3 new shelves to the big wall, and rebuilt it all.  And that doesn't count the work I've been doing on it since April when I started selling... filling thumbtack holes and painting as I go, moving stuff around, TV shopping (which was fun), getting the new TV stand and building it...  It's taken a long time, and there's a big pile left in the closet that this guy is still buying up a little bit at a time, but I'd say 3/4ths of what's going is now gone.

Now I'm trying to figure out what I'm doing this weekend - I guess watching the Gators roll Tennessee (hopefully).

In case anyone was curious, I counted the figures today - I came up with 1,967 as the total.  That could of course be off by a few.

I don't know if anyone was curious or not, but I managed to take a census finally - the current count is 1,971 1973.  That could be off by a few though.

No no, I was serious - thanks for the link.  I'll check it out in a few minutes.  I basically put figures into sandwich size zip-lock bags, then sealed those up and put them into gallon size zip-lock bags.  There's lots of cushion just from that, but then I put all that into sturdy large boxes and added padding where necessary.  If the boxes don't get completely crushed, I'm confident that they'll be fine.  The statues are in their boxes (see photo) and I'm going to stuff those cabinets full of newspaper so they can't move around inside of them and I'll plastic-wrap the cabinets so they won't open.  Then I'm going to put the glass cabinets onto the truck against the wall, and use the book cases to sandwich them in place so nothing can fall into the glass.  I THINK they'll be safe, but I'm prepared to deal with any damage that happens...

Just wondering if I'm the last  person to realize that you had used VHS tapes to form the risers for you collection.  Amazing collection Rob!  Are you planning on a similar set up in your new place?

We're going to be renting for at least one year (maybe as many as three).  I'm taking all my shelving and will try to set everything back up, but the room is much smaller.  It definitely won't fit on one wall, I'm not 100% sure that I'll have room to fit everything at all.  It'll basically be a guest bedroom / toy room.  The cabinets with the Gentle Giant probably will have to go in another room - not sure yet.  As for the VHS tapes, I don't think it's a secret or anything... I have lots of other things in there too.  Much of it is done with painted International Delight coffee cans stacked up, and then with little planks of wood running in between.  Anything that's light weight, black, and made from something rigid enough to support figures is great stuff to use.  It helps to have various sizes and shapes to be able to build different platforms for different items.

Holy crap Rob.  I thought before you moved you thinned out your collection.

I'm late getting to this, but I thinned it out pretty severely actually.  I ditched all the 12" line, unleashed, titaniums, an entire set of about 800 carded 3 3/4" figures and thinned out maybe 300 or so army builders.  I sold the prequel legos and boxed up the OT legos...

I keep thinking about what could go next... prequel mini-busts is about the only thing that's left that I'd consider but I'm not in a rush on that sort of thing.

That is a thing of beauty Rob! Are they all free standing? I've got to paint my Gangan someday like yours.

Thanks!

Yeah, all free standing, although there are a handful of figures that can't manage that... battle droids and such.  Lots of them are just leaning slightly up against the risers for support.

As for the Gargan, This one was cast some time after Ryan's initial run, so it's the only one with that paint job to the best of my knowledge.

Great pics Rob.  I always enjoy looking at your displays.

After two years, I took new photos last weekend... so I updated the first post.  Thinned out about 100 troops, dusted everything and painted all the risers that weren't black.  One of the few benefits of having your wife spending time overseas is that you suddenly have room in your schedule for something like this.

Really nice, Rob.  It's photos like these that I need to share with my wife who thinks I have the largest SW collection in the world to prove mine is just a fraction of this.

I don't know how long I just spent looking at all those pics, but it was worth it.  ;)

Just magnificent, truly. I see so many things in there I want! (One day...)

Wow, Rob, there aren't many people that could make so many hundreds of figures look so organized.  And the busts look great in those Detolfs.  8)

Cool setup Rob!  I love how you've organized the figures into scenes/groups.  I tried something similar organizing the figures by release date at my old house.  I liked having them by series (POTF2, POTJ, SAGA, etc.), but it looks way more confused and makes it much harder to see figure evolution or pairings.  I think I'm going to go this route if/when I ever get around to my loose displays.  Nice work!

Yep, you need some 3-3/4" scale paper bags to go over Mutt's head on those figures. :)

Yeah very nicely put together Rob...  Wow man.  It's tough to make this stuff not look...  uh, cluttered.  Somehow you pulled that off.

Thanks.  I was more or less just trying to go in order... EU at the top, then E1-E6.  I'd eventually like to have a slightly bigger space.  I've also got a ****-ton of legos (Star Wars (OT only) and classic Space, Pirate, and Castle) all boxed up. Quite frankly I'll probably need at least twice the room that I have.

Impressive.  Most impressive.

What are you using for the risers in your figure displays to give your middle and back rows some elevation?

Sorry, I just popped back in here and saw this.  It's a hodgepodge of stuff.  A ton of it is old coffee cans my mom saved me for years growing up.  Those are stacked into risers with little strips of wood stretched across those.  But there are also spray paint caps, vhs tapes, and all sorts of other weird things mixed in.  Everything is painted black, and I just kind of arrange them as best I can depending on what I'm trying to fit in.

Yeah me too!  I have this little 3-pack of shelves by my desk, but the rest of them are boxed up.  Probably 80% of it, waiting for me to find a way to display it.  Here's what's not boxed up...

I'm always amazed at how ******* amazing your collection is Rob. It has grown so much since I have last looked at this thread. Good stuff man.

Were you able to get a new place before COVID blew up the housing market? And if so have any new pictures?  :P

Got a sneak preview... I went from about 100 feet of shelving to about 160 in the new place.  Lots to unpack still... for scale context, that's a 65" TV:

Thanks guys!  And yeah…it’s been a huge process to move it all.

I work on it when I have some free time…. I started hanging the shelves in September… the 3.75” stuff is about half set up now… then over there by that barge that is reflected in the TV are 9 detolfs with about 200 mini-busts in them.  Above those I need to mount more shelves for Lego stuff.

I’m hoping to have it all done by the summer, and then to not move for a very long time.

The peloton is down there too, so it’s a hangout for us for sure.  In the last place it was all in a small guest bedroom that no one ever went into.  So that was definitely a goal when looking for a new place.

Oooooo. Love seeing how this is coming together Rob. I love that you were able to make it a hangout space and not just some other room in the house. You'll get so much more enjoyment out of it that way.

It's always hard to tell with pictures, but looks like you got pretty fortunate with the placement of the recessed lighting as everything looks pretty well lit. Any plans to add additional lights?

Thanks Ryan!

We actually added the two lights that are over my desk when we renovated.  If I turn them all on it's nice and bright, one of them is on a dimmer.  No plans to expand on that for this place.  Too many other things we want to do over the next couple of years.  :)
