Title: SDCC 2017
Post by: Jeff on July 18, 2017, 09:48 AM
SDCC kicks off tomorrow night... wonder just how much they will be able to tease/show leading up to Force Friday II?  Here are the panel details...

Hasbro: Star Wars Panel
Members of the Hasbro team discuss the popular Hasbro Star Wars line. Attendees will get an in-depth look at Hasbro's latest action figure offerings. Word on the HoloNet is that there may also be a few surprises, including a special product reveal!
Friday July 21, 2017 1:00pm - 2:00pm (PT)
Room 7AB

I, of course, will be there and attempt to relay everything as it happens.

Looking forward to seeing what's there...but I heard there's no Star Wars panel for either movie.

I heard there's no Star Wars panel for either movie.

Because Disney/LFL just had a big panel/reveal for TLJ at D23 last week, they're essentially skipping a big to-do at SDCC.

There was some rumoring a while back that D23 was going to be TLJ focused and they'd do a Han Solo tease at SDCC, but I think the director kerfuffle/collapse/switch set things back to the point they had to re-think that plan.  :(

Well, we finally made it!  ;D

After several years of lackluster showings, I feel like this one has gotten a bit better recently. Still gonna be very expensive for me as far as exclusives...$50 for Thrawn, $50 for Luke/Rey 2-pack, $25 for Gree, $90 for the Landspeeder...and that doesn't even count non-SW stuff.

As far as what I'm hoping to see, for SW I really just want to see some new Rebels toys, or at least confirmation that more will be coming.

And it would be good to know once and for all if they will ever do any more Vintage carded 6" or if they are calling it a day as is.

Nice reveals on the exclusives this morning.  We already knew about Thrawn and the Landspeeder, but it's good to get some official imagery and pricing on those.  And I guess a solid segment of the collecting community will be wearing out the F5 button on their computers on August 14th!

I like the Rey & Luke set.  I suspect that Hasbro Hong Kong dropped the ball by releasing those images yesterday, but whatever.  As exciting as it is to see this set revealed, where is the bonus aspect for collectors?  Sure, the packaging looks nice.  But I haven't been into collecting specific packaging for a long time.  And as cool as it would be to get these two figures before Force Friday, I'm having a tough time justifying why I should pay $50 for these when I can probably get the two figures individually for less than $20 each.

As for Gree?  I know Gree will be available online starting tomorrow, and then in stores in the fall.  I don't know if it's generally worth the "Gotta have it now" mindset when these TRU exclusive figures tend to be so readily available in stores.  And considering that I routinely get rewards $$$ from TRU?  It's cause to not pay full retail for this exclusive, too.

I'm a bit more interested in seeing what else Hasbro will reveal at their panel.  It will probably be a small portion of the TLJ line, but I think that Hasbro will also be putting on a big press push starting mid-August through Force Friday.

The environment backdrops they have for the 6" figures at the Hasbro booth are so freaking epic. If they could break them down into smaller individual modular sets for sale? Hoo boy.

Favorite things were the custom helmet with blast shield for Luke, and the trash compactor alternate Luke head sculpt with wet hair. Nice touches.

Seriously, make these Hasbro! Ten times better than that centerpiece pre-posed crap.

Looks like the Rathtar set is the only new thing in the cases so far, aside from the 6" Luke tweaks (Blast Helmet, Trash Compactor Head).

Hoping for some good reveals after the panel Friday!

The environment backdrops they have for the 6" figures at the Hasbro booth are so freaking epic.

Yeah, those dios are pretty amazing - Tatooine, the Death Star, the Falcon.  I can't even imagine what that set-up cost Hasbro or what it would cost us if they actually did try to sell them. $$$

Would be cool though if they could get some of the 'smaller' things, like DS Troper's console or whatever, into the hands of those that are willing to pay...

Looking through the RS gallery, it looks like the Rathtar got stashed away for the time being.

But the 6" Black Series diorama?  That's amazing stuff!  Their Death Star environment is a great way to show off the new Tarkin, that's for sure.  And it shows some excellent creativity.  In the trash compactor it looks like the pipe Han is using to brace the walls is actually made from exacto knives.  And the Tatooine segment of the diorama is fantastic, too.

It also reminds me how surprising it is that Hasbro never released repack multipacks like Stormie Han/Stormie Luke/Chewie/Obi-Wan in the 6 inch scale. I think the only repack they've ever done was that TRU Han/Greedo set. I probably would have bought that as opposed to those craptastic EE and Amazon exclusive Trooper sets.

Not that I want to suck traffic away from our fine forums, but this is where I remind folks that following along on our twitter (@jedidefender (http://twitter.com/jedidefender)) and the twitter of our good pals @yak_face (http://twitter.com/jedidefender) is the easiest way to see new pics as they pop up.

Unfortunately, I just don't have the time to re-paste them all in here in a timely manner (I am trying to do some 'real' work today too :P).

I mentioned on Twitter it would have been nice to see this new technique applied to the initial TLJ figures, because the difference between Resistance Rey, who is hands down the best figure they've done in this line, and the Jedi Rey are staggering. Oh, well. I imagine we'll get a lot of amazing likenesses going forward.

The new facial deco technique is very welcome, and frankly a bit overdue.  I can't help but think that the guys from Hasbro, many of whom are on social media, have seen all of the collectors out there that have taken to improving on the stock facial deco on 6" Black Series figures.  There seems to be a subculture on Instagram devoted to these repaints!  And there was definitely room for improvement there, and I'm glad to see that it's coming soon.  If only it was happening with the TLJ line launch!

Very nice 6" reveals.  Might have to get a couple RFTs and name one Jesse.  I didn't take a closer look, but does this guy come with a holster? (Will have to check later)  Also wonder if they'll scale down Maz and Leia for the 3.75" TVC line??  We can start dreaming.  Rex looks nice, but not my focus.  Dewback will probably be wonderful, but space issues.  It might depend on which Sandtrooper we get with it.  Looks like the white pauldron on the product shot, though they show the orange on the film still.  If it's gray (which hasn't been done yet), then I might bite.

Pretty much pass on 5 POA 3.75" stuff.  Already have superior versions of them... unless the Probe droid and Wampa are awesome and the price is right.

I know people are excited about TVC 2.0, but I'm reserved.  There wasn't anything new on that list except Aphra and the Tank Pilot.  I'm excited about the pilot and tank, but hesitant about the repacks.  My worry is that TVC 2.0 is going to start with a TFA themed wave, which will sit and clog pegs alongside the current Walmart exclusive ones (at least at Walmart).  Then Hasbro will blame the fans saying no one wants SA figures and that will be the end of that.  I get that Hasbro wants to push the new media, and I can't blame them, but hopefully they don't put Finn, Poe, Han and Leia on vintage cards (unless Han and Leia are new figures of Smuggler Han and General Leia).  I hope I'm wrong.

Kicked off the panel (basically) with this, and it was a strong way to do it.  Finishing it with TVC after teasing fans a bit, even better.  They really are righting the ship IMHO.  The 6" line is impressive...  and now besides Bossk, I'll be buying Tarkin and RFT...  Ugh.  ::)
Title: Re: SDCC 2017

I can nitpick on some of the choices (no Rebels, etc.), but I am sooooo glad they've chosen to spend more time with TFA and Rogue One figures/vehicles.

The toy releases they had with the movies were really hit and miss, probably due to their development timelines and lack of access to final content.  So I'm very glad they're not just moving on but spending more time on the cool stuff they missed the first time around.

Nice work Hasbro!

I know people are excited about TVC 2.0, but I'm reserved.  There wasn't anything new on that list except Aphra and the Tank Pilot.

Well, they had one slide that promised five NEW figures(which they couldn't show; probably TLJ based).  If you include that, you're at about 50% new/old - which is pretty much close to the mix Walmart SA stuff was running.

The worry about too much repack causing distribution problems is real though, no argument there.  Totally outside our control though. Hopefully they are paying enough attention again...  :-\

I am sooooo glad they've chosen to spend more time with TFA and Rogue One figures/vehicles.

Me too. Nice to see they won't be 'one and done' or anything.  Will be nice if they can keep mixing older stuff as new movies are cranked out.

Cassian Andor if you're 90% of the country.  :-\

I'm into rebuying the figures.  TVC cards for them, that'll be nice.  No argument here on repacks and stuff, but hey, tough to complain about the line IMO.  I just hope they're reserved with stuff, and we are able to get the cool stuff.  Supposedly said they're wanting to work with fans on this, and that bodes well.  Hoth Rebel will sell well I think.  Never saw a carded release, and even the TLC one that did was difficult to find, and that's putting it kindly.

I think they are going to do ok with this stuff.

I understand the concern with some of the repacks but these will all sell. Rey is Rey and she'll be essential for this collection. Kylo and the Trooper never sit. The RO figures never got any serious distribution. I've never seen Cassian or the Shore Trooper and Jyn and the Death Trooper only once or twice, before Christmas. I was surprised at first by the Hoth Rebel, but didn't realize this is the running change. Completely forgot about that. I wonder if that opens the door to the second Utai.

Indeed these choices on their own are good calls. My concern would be that they are going to be in the first wave, which as we all know will be over produced. So if they clog up the system with repacks to start, it could doom the line before it has a real chance.

Darby, you're more optimistic than me. Great for those who still need the repacks.  Suckers like me who have the figs but can't resist the vintage cards will buy them. But the openers who already have them won't buy them.

I knew there would be repacks. Having some of the characters on vintage cards will be cool. But the unrealistic me hoped for more brand new stuff

Darby, you're more optimistic than me.

I try to be. It's hard given the state of things and the general negativity in the hobby, but I figure, it's as fun as I want it to be. I think the early going will be very good for TVC. We're not seeing the whole picture and like Jeff says there are at least 5 figs from TLJ apparently we're not seeing. Old Man Luke and Jedi Rey are almost certainly two of them. So long as there is a healthy dose of new, I'm all for it.

A great set of reveals for the 6" Black Series.  Although the PT seems to be given somewhat short shrift.  I get that some of it is market driven, but I also got a sense of some disdain for the PT among the Hasbro Star Wars team during the panel.

Glad to see Rex get recognized.  I wonder why they went with the phase 2 armor over phase 1, but then it may be because the PT Jedi that have been offered would be more likely to interact with Rex in that phase 2 armor.

As for current entertainment offerings?  We've known about Hera for a while.  But it would be good to see Ezra recognized from REBELS, too.  TFA Leia got recognized which is overdue, too.  But it seems odd that they're already moving on from ROGUE ONE, and Bodhi has yet to be done in the 6" figure line.  SWAN asked about this during their interview with Hasbro, and I take it that Hasbro is just holding off on Bodhi for now.

The Rebel Fleet Trooper is pretty sweet.  The portrait is clearly a nod to Pello Scrambas from ANH.  But after watching Vader cut through those RFT's during the end of ROGUE ONE?  This is going to be a hot figure!

I've got some mixed feelings about the Jaina Solo.  I get that there were some loyal fans of the NJO.  But I feel like LFL has moved on from that storyline, and the character is lacking in relevance in the new canon era.  Still, the figure looks cool and incorporates some interesting elements.

The Dewback and Sandtrooper seem like pretty low hanging fruit in terms of something that would go over well in the deluxe figure assortment while also ticking off another item with Imperial troop builders.  What else can we do in this assortment?  I look to some of the ROTS era Clone Troopers with their speeder bikes.  That could be an interesting option, like Commander Neyo with the BARC Speeder.

I also recognize that we haven't seen everything for the fall.  Hasbro seems to have some sort of PR arrangements with some publications where I think they'll make some announcements ahead of Force Friday.  Between Entertainment Weekly, Nerdist and USA Today (which seem to be some of their favorite outlets) I think we may get some more reveals in the next few weeks.

But then there's the exclusives.  I had asked someone for help with Thrawn at SDCC, but that didn't happen.  Now I hear that the SDCC exclusives being made available online has been pushed back to a date in September TBD.  And I'm also hearing that the SDCC exclusives will also be available at HASCON in September.  This deal is getting better all the time!

Since HASCON is Sept 8-10, I guess it makes sense to push back the online orders until after that if you're planning to sell the SDCC stuff at HASCON too.  At the least it gives folks yet another chance to get them, I guess.

I actually have some family close to the HASCON venue.  And my kid might enjoy some of the other Hasbro licenses, so we're talking about the possibility of going.  It's driving distance for us, which helps.

Not sure where to put this, but JTA had a pretty good Q&A with Hasbro today. Very unusual for them. Almost like someone else was asking the questions.  ;) Anyways, the highlights for me:

Bistan and Fenn Rau probably in 2018 - at least they're coming.

Possible Greatest Hits type line for older 6 inch figs people missed, probably next year. Gray Hair Han still on tap.

Scarif stormtrooper not in TVC initially, but probably later. They chose Death Trooper over him.

Will probably see a 3.75 version of the 40th Anniversary 6 inch Vader, and a SA version of the 5 POA RO Stormtrooper. Given their reactions, I'd say these two are probably already in the works.

Jabba's Palace, Cantina and finishing the 92 were reasons they went back to vintage. Yakface / Sim Aloo seem to be a lock.

Cardboard playsets seems like it could return given the reaction to the question.

TVC $ - between 10 and 15, which means 12.99. 15 or so figures for the first year. Hopefully grow it. I feel this is super conservative, but interested to see other people's reactions. Given all the interests this line is serving, 15 feels small.

One of the better convention showings they have had in the last few years. Still the lockdown on Last Jedi reveals, which seems silly, but not unexpected. Lots of good Black Series reveals between Leia, Maz, RFT, Reys, Rex, and Dewback. Cool stuff. Personally very happy to see the return of the beasties, always one of my favorite parts of the movies/line. Hope it continues.

The 3 3/4" stuff looked good too. Some small improvements in articulation in spots too. I don't have a problem with the 5 POA, but I have a little trouble getting too excited about redos of figures I already have better versions of. Previously I had picked up all the 5 POA OT characters but I'm wondering if I should continue that or not. The Luke/Leia/Han/etc. group looks nice, but with less and less display room do I really need to buy 5 POA figures just to store them?

Still excited for the vintage return as well. Just watched the Q and A Darby mentioned and saw the info about price and numbers. I'm not sure of the "sweet spot". At first 15 didn't sound too bad. We used to get about a dozen a year in the VOTC days, and even the very early POTF2 days....but seeing a lot of the reissues they have planned, that might eat up those spots quickly. Honestly, I think a 12-24 range is fine with me....as long as there isn't more than half of those being repacks. Makes it easier to keep up without going broke. And the fact that they are doing vehicles in this line (the tank looks amazing) is the cherry on top.

It seems like something may have shifted in Hasbro's approach.  I think after two years of dumbing things down in an effort to maximize profits, perhaps they got a clearer picture of what the customer base wants?

One thing in another Hasbro property got me thinking:  the GI Joe Cobra Missile Base playset that they just re-offered as an exclusive.  So will the interest in a low-cost item like that change their thinking?

Or are they looking at what some third parties are doing?  I think that might be shifting their thinking, too.  Because the Hasbro guys spent A LOT of time during their panel talking about building the diorama that was on display in their booth.  And some of it bears a striking resemblance to a very popular 3rd party diorama item that's been the topic of discussion here.

This is a really good point. And I do think there has been a substantial shift in their approach. A lot of it I think is Steve Evans, who has been very vocal on wanting things that then come to pass in the next cycle - creatures, TVC, and perhaps next playsets. I think he's more a fan with a fondness for the classic play pattern than we've had in the lead spot for a while. Certainly since DePriest.

Evans also cited consumer feedback on the creatures and underlines the need for fan dialogue and conversation on TVC and elsewhere constantly. The marketplace is too scattered and cluttered to ignore the base you're trying to sell to, so this is a good sign.

Yeah.  Steve Evans seems to get it.  I was very impressed with what he had to say during his interview with SWAN.  And he seems to have a lot of the collector mindset in his mind, much like Derryl DePriest did.  Hell, he mentioned Yakface unsolicited at about 7:05 into this interview (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lgDZbEYwzw4) when being asked about the 3.75" Vintage Collection.

Finally got a chance to get the Q&A posted - San Diego Comic-Con 2017 - JediDefender Q&A with Hasbro (https://jedidefender.com/modx/index.php?id=2462)

Thanks again to Darth_Anton (Anthony) for asking the questions! :)

Good Q&A. Definitely lines up with some of the other things they've said. Good to know the 5 POA line will continue unabated, a line I enjoy. Also seems to dispel the notion 5 POA will be maturing to 9 or 10 POA as has been floated elsewhere.

Yeah, it sounds like 5POA will occasionally get a 1-2 POA boost once in a while (like jaws on Mon Cal, wrists on the Maul/Qui-Gon 2-pack figures; etc) but not a move to 9POA as a standard like some were speculating.

I'm guessing I'll keep buying the 5POA stuff here and there to supplement the collection until the master plan for TVC in 2019 is revealed...

I can't deny I was kinda hoping 5poa may get some increase and I really feel like there's a happy medium in 2007-ish kinds of figures, but yeah that seems to squish the "rumors" some.  And that's fine.  I mean if TVC is a mass item now and not an exclusive, cool.  Case orders will be my way to go on that and look for extras at the stores.

And 5poa I can pick and choose like always, wait for sales, and enjoy it for what it is.

Scored a Thrawn and the Landspeeder.  I'm passing on the Luke & Rey set.

I didn't see a listing for the HASCON version of Rex.

Thrawn seems to have sold out.  But the Landspeeder and TLJ 2-pack with Rey and Luke still appear to be in stock.

Man, I have so many unpleasant memories associated with SDCC stuff going up on HTS, it feels like such a relief to finally have a positive one.  :)

I had just left TRU this morning right after they opened and was about to drive off when I had an impulse to check my phone. I think I was trying to see if there was any stuff found at GameStop, since I was closeby. I caught the JTA alert within 3-4 minutes of it going up. Pure dumb luck.

What proceeded was a very hectic 5 minutes trying to check out of HTS using PayPal on my iPhone. Somehow I got the order to go through and the confirmation email was waiting for me when I got home. I managed to score all 3 sets...it felt like I was in a dream or something, lol.

So glad I did not overpay for these on eBay. On the downside, I think my wallet is down for the count.
