Title: How Long Is Your...
Post by: Scott on January 24, 2005, 05:31 PM
Driveway?

Whilst shoveling this weekend I was wishing my driveway was a little shorter than it actually is.  The amount of snow removal I have to do usually means 45 minutes by myself. My wife doesn't mind the length though, keeps me busy for a while and it keeps her happy

I'd say its about 75 feet long and it gets wider at the end

I'm sick of these misleading thread titles! First the carpet and drapes one over at 'Scum, and now this!

Shame on you Scott Peterson, shame on you.

It's not the length of the driveway - it's what you do with it.

For example, we're into auto-maintenence, basketball, carwashes, 4-square, and garage sales.

What angle does it slope down at?

Mine's straight for a long while and then (again near the end) goes down at around 30o

Whilst flogging the bishop this weekend I was wishing my wand of power was a little shorter than it actually is.  The amount of choking the chicken I have to do usually means 45 minutes by myself. My wife doesn't mind the length though, keeps me busy for a while and it keeps her happy

I'd say its about 12 inches long and it gets wider at the end

Tee hee.

We rarely get that much snow/ice to worry about it, and if we do, well, the whole city is shut down anyway (and talking at around 2 inches).
And on the other side of it, I found a Taco Bell Border Sauce packet that says "Nice palm.  I read a great deal of pleasure in your future."  It is just me, or is that maybe a bit too suggestive for a packet of hot sauce they give away in the restaurant?  Oh, sure, it's about palm reading....

I'm definitely at a point in my life where I'm past driveway envy. As I see it, the longer it is, the more work is needed to clear it of the white stuff, which could lead to a variety of ailments, from tired hands, strained back, or even a stroke (http://beta.health.yahoo.com/news/53181).

I have a nice big blister on my palm from where I was rubbing the tool a little too much so I understand totally what you are saying JI

What on earth are you talking about?  We're talking about driveways.  You can't park a car on a 12" driveway.

I was working last night and it was really storming out. We eventually got about 10", and all I could think about was getting it blown.

Condoleezza Rice, was asked this very question at her confirmation hearing to become the next secretary of state. Barbara Boxer pushed the issue extensively:

Boxer: "Ms. Rice, what is your response regarding the misleading statements made by yourself and the administration regarding the length of the Presidential driveway?"

Rice: "What?"

Boxer: "The Presidential Driveway. Your misleading statements justifying it to the American people..."

Rice: "Right. Our statements were based on the best intelligence available at the time."

Boxer: "And that intelligence has since been proven flawed."

Rice: "Correct."

Boxer: "How wrong?"

Rice: "We overestimated the length, width and effect of the Presidential Driveway."

Boxer: "Factually speaking, with what you know today, what is the state of the Presidential Driveway, today?"

Rice: "It's this big." (http://www.congruentinc.com/imagestopost/15563.jpg)

"She did no more than any other member of the administration, but they all misled," Biden told CBS'"The Early Show" on Wednesday.

"She's always been candid and honest, and she listened," Hagel said.

"Dr. Rice is responsible for some of the most overblown rhetoric that the administration used to scare the American people into believing that there was an imminent threat from [her driveway]," Byrd said.

In this image made from video, Sen. Kay Bailey Hutchinson, R-Tex., continues to tow the party line regarding the girth of the Presidential Driveway, despite statements from Ms. Rice and the administration concluding otherwise...

25-45 minutes of shoveling depending on the coating and weight.

My driveway is pretty darn long, and it curves to the right. I've been known to let up to 6 or 7 people park on it at a time.

However....last month, some people from the city utilities came and chopped a 3 * 4 foot hole in my driveway to replace a pipe.  Now my driveway doesn't look the way it used to.

Forget about your driveway... You guys get a lot of rain up there. Ever have problems with mud oozing past your retaining wall? My cousin had it happen once... Wasn't pretty.  :-\

I've decided to use some added protection on my driveway recently, since I don't like to let just anyone use it anymore.  Never know where they've been and how dirty they're going to get my driveway, so I've installed an iron gate at the end, with a security call box.  People need to personally ask me for permission to use it, but if you catch me on a Friday or Saturday night, I'm usually more willing to oblige...

Anyway, my driveway is far too big to fit in one shot, but here's an aerial photo of some of it, just so you folks can get a picture of what I'm dealing with.

It's hard work.  Especially when loads of the white stuff is falling...

One of my ex's had a natural loop in his.  For some reason he really thought it was cool and was always sticking things on it.  It kind of made me sick.  We weren't together for long...
I'm living in an apartment now, so I don't have to worry about a driveway.   But one day I'd like one, not too big, not too small, not too wide, and not too skinny.   Just something that fits my purposes.

Yeah, my driveway seems to do the job just fine.  I always tell myself it's not the size that matters, but how I use it.   :-*

Thankfully, my driveway leads up to a very comfortable garage.  I found it a pretty tight fit at first, but I've learned to actually enjoy it that way.  Of course, regular maintenance is important.   8)   :P

While shoveling my driveway last night I remembered this thread...since we moved I guess I got a brand new driveway.  Its a LOT wider than my old driveway which my wife loves (for obvious reasons)!  The length though is a lot shorter than my old which means I can't get everything parked there that I want.  Its almost as wide as it is long...I guess I have driveway envy :-\
