Title: George Takei comes out
Post by: Nathan on October 28, 2005, 01:59 AM
Yahoo News (http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20051028/ap_en_ce/people_george_takei;_ylt=Aoji91ESdKHtIv6NJEjyt6HqChkF;_ylu=X3oDMTA3YXYwNDRrBHNlYwM3NjI-)

Trek Today (http://www.trektoday.com/news/281005_01.shtml)

George Takei, who as helmsman Sulu steered the Starship Enterprise through three television seasons and six movies, has come out as a homosexual in the current issue of Frontiers, a biweekly Los Angeles magazine covering the gay and lesbian community.

Takei told The Associated Press on Thursday that his new onstage role as psychologist Martin Dysart in "Equus," helped inspire him to publicly discuss his sexuality.

[...]

The 68-year-old actor said he and his partner, Brad Altman, have been together for 18 years.

Good for him I guess.

I'm a Trekkie but I don't follow the behind-the-scenes stuff too closely, so this came as a TOTAL surprise to me. But after reading around a bit just now, I guess at least a few fans had had their "suspicions" already.

I'm not a Trekkie but I figured he was gay for whatever reason and never really considered why, just thought he was.

There was this bit on Stern one morning where they prank called him pretending to be Ricardo Monteban (sp), and it was an instant classic.

Good for Mr. Sulu...  Finally got past that Starfleet "Don't Ask Don't Tell" policy.  Now I just hope he doesn't get the demotion he always fought against on the set of the ST films! :)  one of the greatest stories of delusion in history.

Star Trek is gay anyway.

All jokes aside, I didn't expect this either.

I'm not surprised.  Good for him.

68 years old? He certainly took his time.

There's probably a good Klingon pun to make here, but I'm way too lazy to come up with one. . .

That was one of those strong rumors I've heard for years around town. It's a shame people feel compelled to keep things like that a secrete.

Perhaps that whole "Star Wars vs. Star Trek" thing can finally come true after all these years, although it may not be in the way most fanboys had imagined. . .

First Sheryl Swoopes, now Sulu. What a week!  :-*

LOL!  I never thought Sulu and Swoopes would ever have anything in common.  Let alone the same thing in the media in the same week.

I did not see that coming.

But then again, I really don't give a rip about the sexual orientation of celebrities.

I like Fark's headline:

"Set Phasers to Fabulous!"

Still, all jokes aside, this really wasn't a big deal.  I saw the news, nodded...and went on to another website.  It seems that it didn't matter much to me who Mr. Sulu was boning on his own time.

I think most Star Trek (and sci-fi) fans are probably decent enough people that we're happy that George Takei finally feels safe enough to admit who he really is.  I seriously doubt there are a lot of Star Trek DVDs being burned tonight (except maybe down in the Bible Belt).

Speaking of which, one of these days, I'd really like to see "actors" like the Rock and Vin Diesel suddenly come out.  Not saying either one of them swings that way, but it would be really cool if one of those WWF or NASCAR crowd mega-icons would do it just to shake things up a bit.

Then again, if someone like Tom Cruise still feels he needs to jump around on couches and proclaim that he swam up Dawson's Creek.....I think we're still a ways away from any big mainstream actors following Mr Takei's lead.

Excelsior, Mr Sulu.....Excelsior!

I just find it funny that I keep running into people that think not unlike myself. Not only do I not care with whom or what a movie/TV "Star" sleeps with, I also used that very same headline on a different forum that I post.  ::) You see, I was on this other site posting when I heard the news and thought I would share it and that line was the first thing that popped into my head.
