Title: Re: Brent's Customs - Updated 11/7 Kubrick Diorama
Post by: BrentS on December 31, 2005, 12:05 PM
I've been posting over at Galactic Hunter for a while but I just saw a link to this web community.  It looks like you have a very active Customs group.  I thought I'd share some of my custom creations.  I just started customizing figures this year (about 6 months ago).  I've been having a blast with my new hobby.  I've been getting a lot of advice from Gregorbian and others at the GH site.

I started this year with the standard clone repaints:

These were made before the actual figures became available.

I've also made a few clone commanders:

I've recently started working away from the clones too.  Here's my first shot at Quinlan Vos:

and General Kenobi
(http://i7.photobucket.com/albums/y271/cerius31/obi-1.jpg)

I've got more in the works.

I've actually sold and traded away several of my original customs.  Its been a good way to break into the hobby as it helps cover some of the bills when starting out.

Welcome aboard. Did those red and blue clones start out painted red and blue or did you start from scratch? Nice Fox.

As Phruby and Anton said, welcome aboard!  Any friend of Gregorbian's is a friend of mine.   :)

These are some great custom clones, especially since you just started customizing - simply amazing.  You already look like you have the skills of a veteran customizer.  The paint applications are very well done, especially on the Shocktroopers and the 501st clones.  I think your 501st ones look much better than what Hasbro put out.

Again, welcome here, make yourself at home, check out some of the other threads here and the photonovel section up above too.  Feel free to keep showing your work and let us know what you think of our stuff too.

Nice Shock troopers and 501st, you obviously have painting tallent.
Welcome.

Post by: BrentS on December 31, 2005, 06:30 PM
Thanks for all the compliments.  To answer Mr. Phruby's question, all of those clones started out at #41s and were made before the Jedi Assault, Tactical Ops, or Shocktroopers were officially released.

I used to paint a lot in high school but I really got away from it. I went to Celebration III this year (my first SW fan convention) and was really really intrigued by the customization and diorama exhibits.  I knew I wanted to take a crack at it when I had the time.

My biggest personal limitation is that I'm color blind  :o   So I'm constantly asking others for help with colors, etc.  Thats one of the reasons I haven't veered much away from the simple colored clones.  The Game Wizard paints help because their colors are pretty self explanatory (for the most part).  If you ever see one of my customs and the color seems off - make sure you let me know  ;)

I've also done some playing around with Sculpy (Cody's Visor, various packs and pouches) and even casting resin parts (Fox's helmet).  I've got a lot of ideas but not a lot of time to work on them.

Thanks again for the compliments.  The skills I see on this forum are amazing.

Welcome to JD!  ;D  The customs community is a bit more active here than at GH (I think all of the main customizers on the GH customs boards also post here).  I'm sure you'll feel right at home here  ;D
I can't wait to see what else you have coming up!

Good work. All the clones look like production figures, though the 212th airborne trooper seems odd.

almost professionnal looking

the vos fig should look less bald inho, but then agen kolar's hair piece is an neat idea

I'm a fan of all your customs, save for the attempt at Vos. He looks bad to me, is all. I think you would have better results if you got a different head, and tried somthing that way. Maybe also sculpting the bands he has on his hands and hair as well. :)

I actually sold this Vos on eBay a while ago.  But I think you are right.  Thyere is something off about the head/hair.  I still like the choice of Agen Kolar but I needed to add some more hair to the front - like bangs or something.  I'm going to try this guy again sometime.  I was happy with the choice of the clone wars Anakin body but I should also add some "weathering" to him too so that he really looks like he was through the Wars.  Thanks for the honest criticism.

first of all welcome aboard!  :)

the shocktroopers and 501st look amazing as everyone else said. the weathering is nice and the lines are clean and crisp, especially the chest design on the 501st. the colors look great - no one would ever know you are color-blind.

the cape on the clone Obi-Wan is a little awkward. i would maybe try sculpting two small little "buttons"/clasps on the outside of the cape to add the "chain" to so it fits the cape a little better. i do like the soft goods addition.

i look forward to seeing more of your work.

Post by: BrentS on January 8, 2006, 01:23 AM
Here is new custom I've started working on - a Jawa Sith Lord. This is a work in progress.  I have a bunch of Jawas that I've collected so it seems like a good idea that one of them would have found the dark side.  So far, its just a simple repaint.  Let me know what you think and what additions I could consider.   When I looked at the photos close up, I realize there is a lot of spots that still need touch up paint too :)

Post by: aeseven7 on January 8, 2006, 04:12 AM
I too think the concept of a Sith Jawa is a neat idea, lol

My only thoughts that spring to mind is when I think of a Jawa that's gone over to the dark side, I see his face still being black (shadowed) and maybe adding another type of cloak in addition to his regular tatooinian (sp?) attire.  Can't go wrong with layering his cloaks:)

Also, since Sith are big on technology, I'd also see maybe some sort of advanced breathing filter or even a larger breathing apparatus that was directly implanted onto/into him.

In any case, it's a really cool idea, AND nice work on your clones!

Post by: Ryan on January 8, 2006, 04:17 AM
I really get a kick out of that Jawa. Greorbian made one back when we made Sith for the CCC. I agree that a black face would look better, you could make the eyes red though. Layering some softgood on there might work or you could even try to use some Yoda parts, and paint them darker colors for more of a Jedi feel.

Here's Greg's Jawa if you are interested:

Hee Hee what a funny litte Sith!  The idea of it is just funny in a way.  But in the Star Wars universe anything can happen.

I'd paint the red face and hands black too, but whatever you want to do is absolutely up to you.  The red does give him an all new look and stands out.

 :P
Title: Re: Brent's Customs
Post by: BrentS on January 8, 2006, 01:28 PM
Hmm, the consensus seems to be a black face.  I painted it red to differentiate from the other Jawas.   I've also thought about adding some metallic accents to the face.  I just want to do something to differentiate it.

Meditate on this I must.

Finished up a Galatic Marine, its my first try at this one.  I had to mix up a custom pot of Maroon paint - got some help from my wife (keep in mind I'm colorblind).  He was fun to make but much harder than I expected.  This was my first attempt at leg swaps.  He's destined to join someone else's collection to help me pay for my Saga 2 figures.

The recipe is pretty simple (and I'm sure easily recognized):
Clone Commander Body and Kama
Saga 2 Snowtrooper Helmet and legs.
Shoulder "Pads" cut from the pauldron of the AT-TE gunner

I also did a little bit of work on one of my entries for the group project - Voolvif Man.  Obviously he's still a work in progress.

Het, great job Brent!  That Galactic Marine looks very well done (and the color looks awesome).  He has a unique look to him, and stands out from many of the others I've seen people make.  I like his neutral stance a lot.  Great work!

The Wolf guy is looking great too!  Can't wait to see the final result.

Nice KISS custom  ;D

I like the Clone Wars alien Jedi, especially the wolfman Jedi.  The armor looks good, but you need to put him in a big bubble  ;)
The Ithorian Jedi looks a bit skinny, maybe a softgoods robe would make him look bulkier?

I really like that Sith Jawa too!  ;D

Wow, the Wolfman Jedi really rocks.  That's a great use of parts and the armor looks perfect.  The Ithorian is very well done too, I like his slender build.

The Kiss custom is hilarious.  It really does look like one of those freaks!   ;)

Nice Kiss Amedda BrentS.  I always thought Gene Simmons' tongue would look just as juicy and meaty when scaled down to 3-3/4 size, and you've proven my theory correct.  He just needs a couple things:

1 - A big axe-guitar....NO, a big, BLOODY axe-guitar!  See Chewie's thread for good bloody axe ideas.

2 - A sidekick.  Every lingually-endowed 3-3/4 scale action figure with a bloody axe-guitar needs a whipping-boy sidekick.  I submit the following for approval by the board:

A - Take a Dannl Faytonni (http://www.rebelscum.com/sw0329ltfaytonni.asp) head, shave back the hairline and give him a perm.  Attach said head to a skirtless ROTS Padme body.  Adorn Padme with red and white striped Daisy Dukes, revealing white tanktop, white workout Keds and white calf-length socks.  Paint the legs, upper torso and arms hairysunburneddoughy #5, and VOILA!  Gene Simmons with his faithful sidekick and little brother, Richard!

     B - Placeholder for stuff

I can't wait to see your Lickin' to the Oldies photonovel!

Post by: BrentS on January 30, 2006, 12:24 PM
Thanks for all the comments.  I really like the way Roronn turned out.  I was surprised how easily those parts fit together.  I may put a soft goods cloak on him to see how he looks.  The wolfman was one of my first intensive part swaps custom.  I'm still not sure the parts fit together great but overall I'm happy with him.

The KISS custom was a fun little custom.  I hadn't thought about a sidekick per se.  I'm working on the other band members now too (at least mentally I am).  I'm not sure if I'll actually keep them when I'm finished as I'm not exactly a KISS fan.  However, the Mas Amedda tongue inspired me to try it out.

Well, I've got a vacation day tomorrow so I stayed up late tonight to finish up one custom and start another.

I finished up the Sith Jawa.  I took some advice for the WIP and added some "technology" to the face mask.  I also added a small custom soft goods cape.  I repainted the face and added some silver drybrushing.

(http://i7.photobucket.com/albums/y271/cerius31/Jawa-Sith-3.jpg) (http://i7.photobucket.com/albums/y271/cerius31/Jawa-Sith-2.jpg)

As some of you are aware, I've been trading for a number of Tusken raiders recently.  These are planned for an upcoming project.  Here is a preview character - a Tusken War Chief (yet to be named).  I'm very pleased with how he turned out.  Let me know what you think.

I'm planning on trying my hand at a Photonovel (or at least a "photonovelette") with both of these characters making some sort of appearance.

The Sith Jawa is sweet, Brent. The addition of the cape is what makes it, I think.

The Tusken War Chief is going to inspire DOZENS of copycat jobs, man. That is a great concept which you have expertly executed! The only suggestion I would have - and it's not a real big deal - would be to figure out how to make the crossed bandoliers wrap all the way around his body. The use of the harness for a belt is a very nice touch.

Can't wait to see how you put these guys in play.

Wow Brent you've been busy. I absolutely love the members of Kiss. The Gene Simmons one is perfect. I love Ace too.

That sith jawa reminds me of a lego Vader. The breather is a good idea but the cape really makes this sith jawa complete. Nice combination of colors you used on the hood.

I like the Tusken War Chief. The metal chain and softgoods are a great idea. Its good you didn't add the fabric to the sleves. It would look too bulky that way. I wish the straps when all the way around the figure but that doesn't take away from a great figure.

Very creative set Brent!

Really nice update Brent.

The Sith Jawa to me is a funny, kinda cute little custom.  Reminds me of something Disney might do.  It's a great custom though, I think the extended cape and the breather on the face are perfect additions.  Makes you realize that Jawa's may not always be such little, seemingly harmless creatures.

The Tusken - holy cow!  Is this one of the ones I sent you?  That's a mean looking guy.  Cloth goods work better here than I thought they would!

Title: Re: Brent's Customs - Update 2/17
Post by: BrentS on February 17, 2006, 10:59 AM
Thanks for the comments everyone.  I agree about the chest bandoliers.  I need to find some way to connect them together.  I'll looks through my bits and pieces and see what I can come up with.  I may have to resort to some sort of rubber bands.

Chewie, yes this is one of the Saga Tuskens I got from you (for the base).  I cut the bandoliers from a POTF figure that I got from another trade.  The silver "crown" was made from pieces of an Obi-Wan Pilot headpiece.

For the Jawa, I think he's funny.  I'm envisioning that the breather may actually be a "translater" so that we does just say "Uttini!"

I'm off for a few days.  I hope that I can provide another update sometime next week.  Have a great weekend everyone!!

Perhaps a repainted Wookie Warrior bandolier would work? Or a single IG-88 bandolier? You would probably have to tighten up the former, but that's always easier than trying to make something bigger. :)
Title: Re: Brent's Customs - Update 2/17
Post by: Gregorbian on February 17, 2006, 12:16 PM
Awesome work on the Sith Jawa, I think Jawas are underrepresented in the customs world, so it's always good to see a new version!  I am trying to figure out how to make a properly scaled super-articulated version...
I think that breather/translator is a nice touch - it gives him a touch of Darth Vader.  I don't know if you should use it as a translator though - for me at least, the "UTINNI!" is one of the fundamental characterstics of Jawas  :P

I love that Tusken Raider War Chief!  I agree with In Rem, there are going to be tons of copycats/inspired people using your figure as a model.  The softgoods are really well done.  For the bandolier/harness - if you can't find any Wookiee Warrior bandoliers, you might be able to glue a cut-up piece of rubber band to the create the full bandolier.

Hemble - thanks for the kind words.  Everytime I look at the Jawa I can't help but smile.  I'm still not sure he's believable as a Sith but he was fun none-the-less.

Errex - I used Citadel Paints - it is the "Blood Red" color

Greg - your Sith Jawa inspired me :)

As far as the Bandolier goes, I think I may try to piece together another portion of a tusken raider.  I'll post an update when I get it.

....... in the meantime, I've been mulling around a Photonovel idea.  I've put a preview pic in the photonovel thread.

Well, I've made some progress with my "newbie" casting attempts.  I've had some mixed sucess/failure.  I've been snapping pictures of my in progress but I'm too tired to get the uploaded, cropped, etc etc.  Maybe tomorrow I'll show off what I've got.

Updated on Sunday afternoon.....

Here are some photos of pieces that I've cast.

Captain Typho heads.  These are pretty much usuable "as is"

Alien head for upcoming challenge, he needs some basic clean-up and I need to cut away his sprew hole.

Beehive Clone Helmet - needs a little clean up.  I may sand it down and make a new mold using this.  I did the best I could making that helmet from sculpy.

and finally, some really really bad Rykrof heads  ??? :o ??? :o  Obviously these need some work.

I wanted to give a quick update on some WIPs that I whipped out this afternoon (ha!).

First up a Jedi Knight for my upcoming Photonovel.  His name is tentatively Rey Shaa.  I hope to make him my "hero" character even if he's not the star of the first couple of entries.  Obviously, his head was the source of part of my casting experiments (one that worked okay).  I just had to dremel into the head to make it ball jointed.  I had to trim up the neck joint as well.  I think I'm going to paint him as a Caucasian so as to further differentiate him from Typho.  I had a surprisingly hard time to get this figure to stand up right.  Has anyone else had problems with Pilot Obi-Wan in terms of standing?  His left foot needed to be bent pretty good.

Next up, a young Darth Sidious.  He still needs some work but for now he's a head that I got from my custom fodder from Adam (I'm pretty sure its Dutch Vander) and Sidious evolutions body.  I need to do something to match the hands with the face, or maybe use black "gloves".  I also want to give him a cape or robe.  Do you think this head works for a young Palpatine.  I think it does.

the far left rykrof head will be useable if you just fill in his chin with some modeling epoxy.

Well BrentS you arent alone with the pilot obi-wan.
He can barely stand up on a base too.

I like your young palpatine, never thought I'd see anything that original!  :o
Really cool and yes it looks like a young palpy.

CC- thanks for the comments.  In looking at this custom closer, I think I need to shorten the neck a little.  I'm also afraid that the head may look a bit too large for the body.  Hopefully when I add a cloak or cape that helps offsite the size a bit.

Cle Tous Enloe is hysterical!  I may be able to try that one.  I think I've got  a police officer body lying around.

I was going to say the same thing Brent. Dutch's head is really too fat for most other bodies it seems. I think the neck looks too skinny with that head as well. Personally I think he is too fat to be a young Palpy. Perhaps you could try using an Epsiode I head, and sculpting his hair a bit so it isn't receding so much as well as giving it some color. If that doesn't make him look young enough you could try and sand down some of the wrinkles and the chin a bit.

The Jedi is looking pretty good. I never had problem getting either of my Pilot Obi-Wan's to stand. ??? I think that I'd make this Jedi Caucasian looking. With darker skin he'll just end up looking like typho. You can never go wrong with that body though. :P

That Enloe thing is hysterical!   ;D

And good start on those figures Brent... I am thinking on a young Palpatine, the head from the EU Emperor might really be a good choice over Dutch Vander... nothing wrong with Dutch though.  I might have a head of that Palpatine... it was an expensive figure but I'd be willing to trade it it you want to.

Nice work on those Typho casts, they turned out great!  I like the mutant Rykrof too  ;D

That head is perfect for a young Palpatine.  If there was some way to give him a pointier nose it would be even closer, however as it is the head looks great.  Clever!

I have a few customs that I worked on this weekend and finally got around to taking pictures.

First up - simple Jawa repaints.  As you've seen  here  (http://www.jedidefender.com/yabbse/index.php?topic=11068.0), I have a plethora of Jawas in my collection.  I wanted to repaint a few of them to use in the Photonovel I'm planning.  Here is the Jawa Seance:

My jawas needed a few droids at there disposal.

Gonk:
(http://i7.photobucket.com/albums/y271/cerius31/Gonk-top.jpg) (http://i7.photobucket.com/albums/y271/cerius31/Gonk-Side.jpg)

Treadwell:

and worker droid (can't remember his number designation):

The droids were fun repaints and it allowed me to experiment with some dry brush and washing techniques with some various colors.  I was really trying to get them to look metallic.  I think it works but I'm always interested in your opinions....

Hey brentS, you are quicly mastering the casting!  Great work in such a short time.
I like the use of the Cap P head on the jedi body.

Do you see what i meant by how casting makes customizing easier because you dont have to hunt for fodder/wait for fodder to become available?

Great work on the gonk too. Excelent paint apps.

Very nice update Brent, you've gotten great at this in a short time.  Wow.

Jawas - always like these boogers, good job painting them

Gonk - hee hee!  great idea using that TIE chest panel for the top of him, it's perfect and great painting!

Tredwell - amazing how a repaint can bring this even more to life, it looks very nice

ASP Droid - that's outstanding Brent - he looks very rusty and 100% better than Hasbro's - looks like even a new sculpt with such beautiful painting/weathering

Chewie, Thanks for the comments - The Gonk is my favorite (I've been dying to do one of those since I picked him up).  I needed something else to go on top and I didn't want to use a Thermal Detonator  ;)  I just happened to look through my parts bag and the TIE pilot chest piece fit perfect.    Even though the Gonk is my favorite - I really like how the ASP repaint came out.  Too bad the figure doesn't stand very well!

Glassman - also thanks for the compliments - I'm not master and as far as whether or not I'm ready to admit that its easier to caste parts that chase fodder, I'm not ready to go there quite yet  ;)  I still have more mistake pieces than usuable ones.  However, I still think that Casting parts is a great option for people.  I need to really branch outside of casting heads before I'm able to do a full assessment!!

Ron - You are the master painter so any compliments on my repaints from your are very much appreciated!  Although I'm worried that your going to make my Jawas look bad  ;D

Wow Brent! How did I miss these? Great job on the head casting. Is the problems you've had getting the correct mixture of A and B components correct? How did you finally figure out how to get a good mixture everytime?

Beautiful droids there. That ASP droid looks incrediable in its new color scheme. So does the cool power droid. I like the new additions to his head.

Post by: BrentS on March 9, 2006, 04:01 PM
Thanks Phruby... as far as the casting goes.  I've found that mixing the A + B on the silicone is very forgiving.  I haven't had a mold fail to cure yet.  However, for mixing the resin, I'm using CR-300 (from Micromark) and I've found that I have more success if I have a very slight excess of the "Yellow" part (I think its Part B but I'd have to check).   Now these are the problems I've had (with some of my solutions):

1 - poor filling of the mold by the resin - thats what generates the incomplete beards in the Rykrofs.  Glassman taught me a trick - try squeezing the mold together and sucking in the resin as you add it.  That definitely helps.  Also I've used a toothpick to try and push out any air bubbles that gather in these "underfill" areas.

2 - bubbles in the resin - this leads to bubbles of resin on the cast.  If you look up at the Rykrof heads, you'll see that the eyese have perfect little spheres sticking out - I'm pretty sure that these are a result of bubbles in the mold.  My solution to this was to very carefully pour the first layers on and try to make sure that there are no visible bubbles in the silicon around the problem areas.

Another tip that helps both #1 and #2 - when you mix Part A and B together - try to mix slowly but evenly.  You want to create as few air bubbles as possible as they just cause problems!!!

3 - Molds breaking - the silicon is quite durable, however as you spoon it on, it really runs and this creates very very thin layers.  If the layers are too thin then they will rip as you are demolding either your original or one of your casts.  However, it your mold is too thick, its hard to manipulated and demold.  I think there is a happy medium in mold thickness when I haven't quite yet mastered.  Thats why I echoed Glassman's thoughts - practice, practice, practice.

Anyway, hope those tips help.

Thanks again for the comments - I'm glad everyone seems like the droids.

Prof - thanks for the comments.

All the droids I made inspired one of my Monthly Entries....

I know this is a double post, but I want to keep my personal thread up to date so here are my entries in the Monthly Challenge and Group Project:

Rykrof Android:

Head: Rykrof (Endor Rebel Soldier) Head Cast (squished cheeks)
Body: IG-88
Arm/Leg - EP1 C-3PO with plating from AOTC C-3PO
Hand Modification - Some part cut off some random blaster I had

Because of the way the IG-88 and 3PO legs us different joint types (both had pegs on them), I had to dremel into the 3PO leg and trim the IG-88 waist.  Unfortunately I had to glue the leg in place to keep it there  :-[    I wassurprised that the 3PO and IG-88 legs were the same length.  I also glued the head in place because I was lazy  :)

For what it's worth.  I finally named this guy:    Semel Odon.  He is a hermit that lives on Tatooine.  His species is the Shenzeeder.

looking at the last picture, I need to clean up the wash on the arms  :-\

Head - custom sculpted from Super Sculpy and I made a resin cast out of it.
Body - OTC Myo
Hands - Chewbacca
Robe - not sure, found in my miscellaneous parts - I'm pretty sure that its Agen Kolars.
Staff - Part of a Staff from one of the EPI accessory kits and a thermal detonater.

Brent, nice to see an update today as I have a few minutes to check out what's going on around here.

That alien is really cool, nice to see you were able to make something that is completely unlike anything we've seen, yet at the same time has a Star Wars look.  He's kind of scary looking to be honest.  The only suggestion I have is that the arms don't match up great with the cloak, maybe some other arms might be thicker, or maybe even remove the robe (that's a POTJ Plo Koon robe from the looks of it).

Wow, a Rykrof droid... very differnet and surprising.  That's not something I ever would have imagined someone making... ha ha!  It's really cool though.  You did one hell of a job on mixing parts for it, the wires on the upper leg look great.  Wow!

Spent a little time working on my first shot at a photonovel.  Here is one preview pic.  I've updated more on my thread in the Photonovel Area.

This marks my first attempt at a "Diorama"  or at least hand made backgrounds props.

Comments?  Criticisms?

Chewie - thanks for the comments - on the alien - I wasn't actually trying to match the robe and arms in terms of color.  The robe was more of a sleeve-less coverall.   I really wanted to keep this robe on him as I didn't think the body underneath really worked for the look I was going for.

Glad you like the Rykrof - you are the ultimate judge on those ;-)  Like I said in the other thread - it was sort of outside the normal box.  I'm not sure what his backstory would be but I sort of think of him as the "evil anti-hero"

Great Work!

The Droids are Awsome, they've got that Great used feel to them that  fits so well into the Star Wars Universe.

The Jawa Repaints are deffinatly an improvement ove Habro's Paint Apps.

Your Fan Fic Alien is very original, I commend you for taking the Extra Effort and Sculpting the Head yourself.

Robo Rykrof, also another very original piece. This reminds me of some Type of Art Deco Sculpute you'd see at  a Art Gallery rather than in the Gullies of a Jawa Sand Crawler.

Keep up the Great Work!

I agree with Fritz, that Rykrof does look like some sort of Art Deco piece.  Pretty cool analogy there.

Your preview pic is OUTSTANDING.  Wow, that looks real.  Is the background edited in or did you use some sort of backdrop?

So Rykrof as art deco now.  Maybe someone should make a Rykrof statue to celebrate all his heroics!

As far as the preview shot.  It is a basic foamcore box, filled with real sand.  The background is a printed backdrop that is interchangeable.  Since most of these shots will take place on Tatooine, the interchangeable backgrounds will give this little "set" will give me the most bang for my buck.  Although as I started working with it, I think it may be a little bit to small still.  I may need to make version 2.0 (with more sand!).

I'll try to take some pictures and show you what it looks like.

Very nice figures, BrentS!

That Droid Rykrof is very deco, and rather surreal, too... great job on the look of the corroded metal, in particular.  Very convincing.

As is your diorama preview photo -- looks JUST like Tatooine.  Love the lighting -- looks very much like desert sun(s).  Looking forward to see the rest.

When you mentioned a Fritzkrieg-style custom, my first thought was that you had tried your hand at some deadites or corpses!  But the two gals you got look great, especially the X-wing pilot.  Do tell us more about how you made those two, and with what parts!

Keep up the great work, & happy customizing!

Very fine looking figures thats for sure

Sith Knight- is great and very sexy and the red and black paint apps are simple and very very effective well done.

X-Wing Pilot- I like this figure alot you've gone to te trouble of making her look like a Xwing pilot but without all the orange jump suit and again the paint apps are great.

Thanks for the comments on the Anime figures.  The Sith Knight is named "Gina" (I think) I added a female arm from my custom fodder and Asajj lightsaber.  The X-Wing pilot was a final fantasy figure (don't remember the name), all I added to that was the pieces from a Dutch Vander from my custom fodder.

I've got a few more of these planned but I've been busy working on my photonovel.  Depending on how things go, I might have  another picture or two to preview.  I've got 2 more customs to finish (hopefully this weekend) before I can finish all the characters I have planned for the first installment.

I've finished up some WIPs tonight.  So here there are:

First off - Hamma Gringol:
(http://i7.photobucket.com/albums/y271/cerius31/Hamma-1.jpg) (http://i7.photobucket.com/albums/y271/cerius31/Hamma-2.jpg)

Hamma is a smuggler who lives on Tatooine who helps provide the Hutts and their bounty hunters with illegal goods and weapons.  Although he's much too old to actually perform smuggling runs, he has a very good reputation with the Hutts to be able to get things that others cannot.

Second - a Sith Guard
(http://i7.photobucket.com/albums/y271/cerius31/SithGuard1.jpg) (http://i7.photobucket.com/albums/y271/cerius31/SithGuard2.jpg)

This is a Sith trained Guard that predates Chancellor Palpatines official Royal Guards.  He desires to be trained as a Sith Knight but does not possess the necessary aptitude with the force.  However frustrated, he serves Darth Sidious loyally in hopes that he will someday learn the ways of the dark side.

Last, I've finished up the Jedi Knight - Rey Shaa.

If you remember, he was made from a head cast from Typho when I was working on my casting skills.  The painting on the face turned out okay, but as is typical, the eyes are very difficult to paint well.  I also think I over-weathered him considering that I plan on using him in a time prior to the Clone Wars.  Oh well, not all Jedi can be clean right?  Maybe he can't wash his clothes because he lost an eye?

I like the sith guard. He sure is an ugly little spud without that helmet. The colors work very well together.

The drissellian smuggler is nice too. Id like to make customs wuith a few of these guys myself, but that @#$% eyepatch throws everything off. The hair is a nice touch but I almost didnt notice it because of the white background.

I am interested in reading of Rey Shaa's adventures will he be the main character in the PN?

The hotties are pretty cool as well, Rinoa Heartily never looked better. ( lets see if you Final Fantasy geeks were paying attentiion) ;D

Wow  :o Brent!

Hamma is cool with a nice touch on the fuzzy hair.

The Sith Guard looks really mean, jeez man wouldnt wanna cross him.

Rey is neat, his head looks a little high up though, but the eye doesnt look too bad. The weathering is understandable though.
I just finished a custom of a clone wars jedi with a 55 obi and a TSC Han solo head(they mix perfectly) and the hands look a little funny.
I would suggest you paint the hands to match the head or vise versa.
Then again it could just be the lighting that makes it look darker.

Nice work Brent! My fave is the Sith Guard...the staff is amazing! He's a little scary with the helmet off, but he should be a bada$$

Hamma is a nice mixture of parts. i like the paint job on the robes and the "hairdo" is a nice touch too.

Rey Shaa looks good, the only thing about the weathering is, it looks a little pink to me on the robes (could be the lighting) but you are colorblind aren't you? the eye looks ok to me, the hands just would look better being painted the same color as the head is the only "gripe" i have about it.

nice work & i like the anime chicks you did too...sorry i missed commenting more, been really busy here.

keep up the great work!

I was gonna comment earlier but my Mom came downstairs and she doesn't like the forums ::)
Anyway The Sith guard is my Fav. His helmet could be cleaned up a bit the visor should also be black I think. And I'll echo what everyone said about the Knight, His hands just need to be painted

NOOOO you selling your hotties, O well youll make a bundle. :P

Thanks for all the comments everyone.  I was surprised everyone like the Sith guard so much.  I wasn't sure the Punisher head worked on him but I figure who better to get a mean growl than a Sith, plus I needed a smallish head to make the helmet close to removable.

Smartypants - I've tried to clean up the areas of the helmet where it was cut but its been hard to do.  The problem is the red is so shiny that any imperfection shows up.  Anway, I think it looks better this way.  I decided to leave the visor gold.  I wanted to differentiate it a little more than what the Red guards will become.

Ripley - The staff for the Guard came from one of the Anime figures I picked up.  I just added gold and black drybrushing to bring out the details.  I've got another staff like weapon I've been considering for him but I think I like this one.

The hair on Hamma was an experiment for another custom I've got planned.  It came out reasonably well.

On Rey Shaa - I asked my local experts (wife and kids) and they agreed there was a bit of pink tinge.  Must have been the Dwarf flesh wash that I used.  Damn I hate being colorblind.  Anyway, thanks for keeping me honest!  It was the same thing with the hands.  I had no idea that they were so noticeably different in color.

CC - you may be right on the neck length on Rey.  I may need to trim the neck post a little more.  I can also push it down a bit more.

Darth Ennis - about the fuzzy hair.  I realized that as I was posting the pictures last night but I was too lazy to go back and take pictures of him against a dark background.  All three of these guys will show up in the PN so you'll get more chances to see them.

My original plan was to make Rey Shaa the main Jedi Character and create a series of PN adventures for him.  I will probably still do this but he will certainly not be the main character in the PN I'm working on right now.  He'll show up (probably not until Chapter 2 though).

Based on everyone's comments, I cleaned up Rey Shaa a little more.  I'm happier with him now.  I even added some details to his lightsaber.  Let me know what you think.

Nice update Brent!

Rey Shaa - I like the repainted verision and his skin tone seems to be a great match now on his head and hands.  Good use of the Obi Wan body, it's one of th best I think for Jedi.

Sith Guard - Pretty mean looking guy here, I actually prefer him without the helmet.  Where did you get that head?  It's really cool.

Hamma Gringol - Best of the bunch by far I think.  I love his backstory and the fact that he's an old guy is just cool.  Great use of parts, and I love the hair.  Excellent work.

I don't know if it's just the angle of the photo, or my monitor, but it seems that Rey Shaa's Right hand is pinker than the rest of him. Or, it could be that cough medicine I took earlier. :P

I'm going to hope its the photo.  Like I said, I can't tell the difference in person but I don't have "normal" eyes  :P

Chewie - after using the Obi Wan body on this figure, I'm actually quite frustated with the legs.  I have a very hard time keeping him standing up.  If he's going to be a main character in the PNs, I'm going to have to do something about the legs.

The Sith Guard's head is the Punisher from the Marvel Showdown line.

Thanks for the comments on the Hamma. I'm pretty happy with him.  I've still got a ways to go with learning how to properly swap parts and maintain articulation but I'll learn.  His hair really stands out against some of my other backgrounds for the PN.  Another sneaky preview - he has a crush on certain tatooine resident.

Wanted to keep my personal thread up to date.  Here is the Rykrof Zombie made from the mutant head cast as featured on an earlier page and an unmodified AOD body:

Well, I finally finished the opening chapter of my Photonovel  "Duel of the Sith"  It was a very interesting experience and I have a new found respect for all photonovelers.

Here is one of my favorite shots showing off Hamma Gringol:

Well, I've got three WIP customs that I started tonight.  I'm just too tired and lazy to actually take any pictures.  I mostly just wanted to say - hey, I'm still customizing even though I haven't finished a figure in a couple of weeks.  Hopefully I can finish one tomorrow night and maybe show off the Pimp Daddy photos.  Time for bed.

I should be in bed right now... laid down for 2 hours and just can't sleep.  So I'm going to work on some photonovel stuff.

Looking forward to your next update Brent.

Finished up two of the WIPs that I promised from yesterday.

First up, Kluh Saxder.  He is my entry in the Gladiator Monthly Challenge.  I will use him as henchman for one of the upcoming characters in my photonovel.  I've got more photos of him in the MCC thread.

Second one is just a repaint of a Scorch.  Here is my take on Boss:

I think he actually looks much better in person.  Sometimes my camera pics up too much of my flaws  ;)

One more WIP to finish up but that's not happening tonight.  It will probably have to wait until next weekend.

That gladjumator is awesome.  I never would have thought of using that head for a gladiator, and it is an excellent fit for the look you seem to have been going for.  Great job.

Your boss looks good and your lines are nice and straight.  Only thing that I'd do is add a light coat of a darker white or even light gray.  Maybe just dry-brush it on to give him some contrast.  Other than that he looks very bossy!  Oooh I'll have to be careful, or they'll put me in the Punitentiary!

Commando Boss - Very nice repaint here Brent, looks great!  Very good weathering - what's the backpack from?

Gladiator - Wow, that's a mean looking guy!  The Dex head works well on that body and really good repainting here.  The chain is a great touch!  Wow, imagine if this guy came after our heros in AOTC in the Geonosis Arena!

Ruprecht - thanks for the comments.  I was scourting my fodder for a decent head and I almost used the OTC Myo but it was just too small.  When I pulled out Dexter, I sized it up and started laughing.  This Gladiator is a far cry from a short order cook on Coruscant.

Chewie - Many thanks.  The backpack is just a Scorch Backpack with the two side "pipes" cut off.  As far as Kluh, if Obi Wan saw him on Geonosis, he'd probably just give him a hug.

Looking back the photos, I can tell that I need to clean up a few of the lines on Boss still.

Dexter: "Yeah, I've been workin' out."

lol. I'm wondering, are you going to try and add more arms to him, or is that the finished product? Either way, it looks great! The hulking form really fits well with the Monthly Challenge theme, and Dexter's head can look agressive, apparently, if you want it to! I wouldn't want to be caught in the ring with this guy.

Dexter: "Yeah, I've been workin' out."

More Likely "No, I haven't injected anything illegal into my buttocks"

Thanks for the comments.  for what its worth, I'm not planning on trying to add any more arms to him.  I'm not sure how to explain his existance in the SW universe (compared to Dexter).  All I know is that he still scares me.

Hi Ya Brent

Your photonovel pics look great very well done and I'm very impressed how you've got the shadow on the facing the same way as the shadows on the background pic.

Kluh Saxder- Very well done the body really suits the head very well and the paint apps are great.

Boss- is a simple and very nicely done figure mate you have done really well.

Two new customs this week.

First - a Semi-Superarticulated Coleman Trebor:

Recipe:
Head, Torso, Waistskirt, Hands - Coleman Trebor
Arms, Legs - ROTS Kit Fisto

I had a lot of problems getting the shoulder joints to fit.  The only way I could make it look decent was to cut the Kit Fisto arms at the ring joint and place it inside the Coleman Ring joint.  I hope that makes sense.  Unfortunately, that makes is somewhat difficult to reposition his arms.  Does that make sense?  Any suggestions?  BTW, what do you think of the colors on the robes?  I'm trying the new Repear paints that Hemble recommended (keep in mind my, ahem, deficiencies  ;) ).

I also need to dig out the lightsaber from my other Coleman.  I just grabbed a generic lightsaber from my bit box.

Second up, my entry for the group project, Ysanne Isard.  Close up pictures reveals that I was a little sloppy on the paint.   I'll have to clean that up later.  I'm also guessing that you are going to tell me to match the hands and face skin colors better  ;)

Ysanne Isard - Good work Brent, she looks very good.  Good blend of parts here and I think the painting is good.  Female characters are always tough so I'm kind of dreading my entry, I hope it is at least half as good as yours.

Coleman Trebor - Coleman NEVER looked this good before, best custom upgrade of him I've ever seen, and one of the best all around Jedi, period.  WOW, great mix of parts here and the painting is stellar.  A+++++

 :)

I don't know who Ysanne Isard is but I do like the custom teh grey at the front is a nice touch, If youwant to clean it up just get lightly drybrush over it and it will come up very nicely.

Coleman Trebor is bloody excellent the paint apps looks toatally realistic mate you've done one hell of a job on him and I'm really glad you that the Reaper paints are working out.

Title: Re: Brent's Customs - Updated 4/14- Coleman Trebor and Ysanne Isard
Post by: BrentS on April 15, 2006, 10:33 AM
So far, its seems Coleman is a hit.  I'm still not happy with his arms.  I think I'm going to have to mutilate a pilot Obi-Wan to make him the way I want him to look.  He looks good posed but he doesn't have any "play" value until I can fix his shoulders.

As far as the paint job on him, most of the credit goes to the Hasbro mold.  The tunic and skirt are very well detailed.  I really just put another coat of Khaki to blend the arms and tunic and light wash of an earth brown to bring out the details.  I also washed a little light gray on Coleman's skin.

Smarty - I've got recipe for him right under the picture - pretty simple ROTS Kit Fisto arms and legs and the rest is Coleman.  Like I said though the shoulder joints are the hardest part.

Also, thanks for the comments on Ysanne.  Like most of you, I'm not really familiar but I had to get an entry for at least one group project character!

Well, I just couldn't let this figure lay still.  I sacrificed two pilot obi-wan figures last night in an attempt to get at the proper shoulder joints.  I finally had success but it required much dremmling of the pilot torsoe to free them.  Boil and pop just wouldn't cut it (no pun intended).

He doesn't really look any different now (slightly different arms) so I didn't put any new pictures up.  However, he's now a figure that I can really be proud of.  Maybe my favorite one so far :)

Brent - Man, that Gladiator is AWESOME!  The Dex head on the SSSD Hulk figure is great.  I picked up the Hulk-Wolverine 2-pack for Wolverine and I was planning on doing something with the Hulk figure, but I never got around to it.  I'm glad somebody is using these super-articulated figures for Star Wars customs.  Very well done.

Coleman Trebor - Very nice!  I haven't seen many Coleman Trebor customs, so it's nice to see a well-executed one.  I don't really follow what the problem is with the arm switch - did you cut the Kit Fisto upper arms off of the ball-socket ring and then place them onto Coleman's ball-socket ring?  It's too bad these ball-sockets don't pop out easily when heated  :-\.  Sorry I don't have any idea of how to fix that problem.

Post by: BrentS on April 21, 2006, 01:20 AM
Okay friends, your colorblind customizer needs some help.  I'm working on a female character and I'm struggling big time with hair color.

I started thinking maybe blond so I laid down some yellow, then I hit with a dark flesh wash to tone it down and then hit it with more of a light brown wash.  So now, I think it looks terrible and I'm looking for some advice.

So my question to you, how bad does this look and what could I do to fix it?  I'd hate to just default to black but thats the direction I'm definitely leaning  ::)

Thanks!

HI Ya Brent

Mate the best way I find to do blond hair is this way.

1- paint the hair completely white.
2- give it a wash of watered down khaki
3- then a 2 part mix of watered down white and khaki
3- and finally a very very very light drybrush of flat white.

Hope this works out

Ron

Hemble's the master of realistic paint apps, so I default to his judgement. That's the best way to get it to look realistically blonde.

That's a very realistic looking red-head you've got there, BrentS ;)

Seriously, I don't know if it's just the photo (or my monitor), but it's like she's got dark, brownish-red hair with fiery highlights.

If you were interested in keeping her as a red-head, (please?) I'd just touch up the underside of the hair.

But for blond, i've never had any luck using Yellow for blond.... Hemble's plan sounds pretty smart - and I've got to agree w/ DD's take on him & his work!

Title: Re: Brent's Customs - Updated 4/22- Two New Customs
Post by: BrentS on April 22, 2006, 10:49 PM
Hemble (and others) thanks for the help.  I tried to follow some of Hemble's recipe but I modified it a bit more to give her some more brown color.  Here is the finished custom:

Aleena Tyrazika - She is the daughter of a wealthy aristocrat living on Coruscant.  I hope to use her in an upcoming chapter of the Photonovel

I was very excited about this custom but I'm not so sure I'm pleased with the results.

Here is the recipe:
Face - cast copy of a female face from my fodder collection (thanks to AdamSolo).  I think its Zam Wessel.
Hair - Agen Kolar hair piece with added greenstuff on bangs and down her right side
Upper Body and Arms - ROTS Luminara
Belt - ROTS Shaak Ti
Belt accessory - cut of piece from the Saga2 Gonk droid hat
Skirt and Legs - ROTS Mon Mothma (thats what's under a Rebelous Senators gown)
Cape - also from my fodder collection.  Pretty sure its a POTF Leia cape.

The problems I have with this custom are the arms, face, and hair.  I tried to use "Fair Maiden" for the skin tones but I think they may be too pale.  I was hoping to pass off Luminara's arms as bare but I'm not sure its working :) The hair, well I did the best I could.  I think its okay but still not great.

Custom #2 - Darth Plagueis the Wise.  I've had him finished for quite some time but I wanted to wait and debut him in the Photonovel.  So here are some cropped shots from his appearance in the Duel of the Sith

Recipe:
Head and Hands - Army of Darkness Deadite
Torso and Robe - General Dodonna
Arms and Legs - Agen Kolar
Mask - Cast version of the GI Joe Imperial Procession.  I added sculpt to the mask and made a resin copy which was dremmel out and repainted.

I'm hoping to finish up one or two more WIPs tonight.  If so I'll have one more update.

Mate the hair looks excellent sandy brown by the looks of it and it suits her really well and she is a fine looking custom, I like it.

Darth Plagueis the Wise- Great use of body parts especially the head and the mask is really well done adds so much character to the figure 2 BIG THUMBS UP.

Thanks Ron!  I'm still not convinced that I like the painting on Aleena, however I appreciate your thumbs up :)

Incidently, I went to the Chicagoland Antique Toy and Doll show today.  Star Wars items are huge draw at this show.  Here is a shot of the loot I picked up:

I probably paid around eBay value on most items no real steals.  I ended up with two of the EU Cloud Cars so I may make one them available for a trade.    I may use one of them for a the vehicle custom being bandied about. I picked up a few figures for some customs (Prune face = new version of Hamma Gringol).  I got two J'Quilles for for $8 total so I was pleased with that.  I didn't feel like I could pass up Slave Leia and Amanaman for $10 total.  I got a really cool Japanese looking figure that I think will make cool Jedi Knight custom.  The theed playset has a lot of nice options for use in PN work.  All in all about $100 worth of stuff.  Wife's not pleased but my son and I had a good time  ;)

Thanks for the comments Chewie - I still don't like the way the arms came out on that figure.  But as you know, we are always are own hardest critic.

I found some time to finish up a Work in Progress.  Jedi Master Ty-Ri Docosto(renamed):

This may be one of my most favorite customs to date.  Nothing too fancy but I was happy with the way the head turned out.  I need to clean up the greenstuff around the neck (I used that to help fuse the Ash neckpost).  Hopefully the colors came out okay on him (always a risk for me  ;) )

Recipe -
Head - Ash from Army of Darkness with Beard added using greenstuff
Torso - Sora Bulq
Legs - ROTS Ploo Koon (or Saesee tinn, I can't remember)
Hands - miscellaneous hands I found in my fodder bin.

Post by: BrentS on April 28, 2006, 03:26 PM
I found some time to really finish off a bunch of WIPs and a new figure too.

First up, inspired by Chewie's Headless Ephant Mon from long ago...

Shrumpel Thichna  -  he is a Tatooine denizen who works with the Hutts.  I'm not sure of what his official job description will be.  Probably just a bully.

This is a McFarlane Clown IV head with an Ephant Mon Body.  I've added some extra greenstuff growths from the face.

Young Jedi Knight Ty-Ri Docosto.  He was going to the the younger version of the figure I made from the Ash head.  He may still be but the skin tone is much different when I painted him and I put his scar in the wrong direction! Oops ;D

I'm planning on using him as a semi-man character in the upcoming chapters of Duel of the Sith.  I was going to use the Captain Typho jedi but I think he will fit much better in the story.

Here he is with his Master - Coleman Trebor  (my corrected SA version)

Recipe
Head - Hannibal GI Joe head (hollowed out for ball joint)
Body - Evolutions Anakin

Lastly, since I used the Evo Anakin body I knew the perfect use for the Evo head.  Cartoon Network Clone Wars version:

Much better head than the original battlepack version!  The head was a little larger than the ball joint so I added a bit of greenstuff to bulk up the ball joint.  I also did a little repainting on the robes to give them a bit more detail.

With all these and the Star Wars Pinups I've been a busy boy.

Looking forward to hearing what everyone thinks.

NOw I see what you wanted the Clown head for.

The aien is excellent work, those parts blend together nicely.

I like the Padawan. Which Joe head did you use? I cant tell. Good job.

If I could ever find a coleman Trebor Id like to do an SA version myself. Yours is very well done. I look forward to seeing thses in the PN.

What a great looking figure using that clown head. He looks a real retail toy. I would so get him if they sold him. Some nice assorted padawns there. I really like the fixed version of Anakin. He's much better than how he started.

wow.. the clown head really transforms the Ephant Mon figure. He looks great and I like background info you created for Shrumpel Thichna.  He would fit in very well with the rest of Jabba's goons.

I also really like your Ty-Ri Docosto.  The hannibal head works great for a young jedi.

Thanks for the comments guys.  Shrumpel Thichna was a WIP I've had for some time.  I remember suggesting that to Chewie a long time ago when he showed us his headless Mon.  I think I can definitely work him into the photonovel so he was a no brainer to make.

Looking back at Ty-Ri, you can see where I had a minor dremmel accident and his right cheek (left if you look at it) got scuffed up.  That made me want to go ahead and give him the scar. However, I still think his cheek looks too ruff.  Anyone have any suggestions to help "shine" it up?   I've got some clear coat from Gamesworkshop that I may use but sometimes thats waaay to shiny.

Shrumpel is frightening and horrible and makes me doubt the existance of a benevolent god.

So all in all, I'd say it's a sucessful custom. Well imagined, well painted and definitely creepy!

I also like both versions of Ty-Ri Dicosto. I planned on using that Hannibal head for a young Jedi too.  ;)

I've been working on some "sets" for Chapter 3 of my photonovel.  I've been experimenting a little more with foamcore and styrene.  I was so happy with the way this WIP was turning out, I had to share it as a work in progress.  There is still a lot of to do to finish it up.  I also hope its not too small.  Its amazing how quickly a piece of foam core shrinks as you start building around it.

I know that the council chamber isn't movie "accurate" but this is really just an experiment with diorama building and for use in the photonovel.

Sorry the photo is a little blurry.  My regular camera was way upstairs and I didn't bother to go get it :)

Chewie, Phalanx, Phruby - Thanks for the comments guys!  I'm glad you like the WIP.  I think I'm as excited about this as anything I've done customizing so far.

Anyway, to directly answer Chewie's question  - no its not all foamcore.  The floor, support for the walls (angle pieces) and the backdrop are all foamcore.   The white parts around the window is a type of dry erase posterboard that I found at Michael's.  Basically its just poster board coated with the glossy dry erase surface.  The pillars are pieces of styrene tubing I picked up at the Hobby shop on my quest for styrene.  Obviously the images in the window are printed.  I got them from Nuib Nuib's site.

I think I may need to repaint the floor to add the brown base tone around the Council chairs.  I've also got the decal from Nuib's to put on the ground.  I'm planning on adding some more sytrene strips to some the window pieces to give it more dimension.

With any luck I'll have this one finished this weekend and I'll provide another photo.

Hey Brent,

I've missed commenting on lots of your stuff lately so I'll try and go back and get to most of it.

You are off to a great start on the Jedi Chamber. All the different dimensions are looking good. I can't wait to see the finished product.

SA Coleman Trebor- I guess just getting him from Hasbro was something but I'd have loved to get one like your's. You have inspired me to try and go abck and do something like this to mine.

Aleena Tyrazika- I can see what you were trying to accomplish with this figure. I think you did a good job, but it could be better. I think the only think that really need work is the arms. I like the gauntlets but the paint on the arms isn't as smooth as it could be, there also seems to be little spots where the original color is poking through a bit. I think you could probably fix that up pretty easily. The rest looks great though. Way to make a 'new' head with the head cast and hair piece, it looks great.

Darth Plagueis the Wise- Man that guy is scary looking. Is that the same mask CHEWIE used on his a while back? I think it fits him very well.

Jedi Master Ty-Ri Docosto- You did a good job of disguising the Ash head, this guy looks pretty good, I think that you could clean up the beard a wee bit, it looks like he got a little paint on the nose. You should be able to scrape that off with an exacto fairly easily.

Shrumpel Thichna- Wow. This guy turned out FANTASTIC. I think he may be my favorite custom you've done. The skin tone is fantastic, and the little boyles and warts on the face look great. I'm excited to see this guy in action.

Young Jedi Knight Ty-Ri Docosto- The young version looks great too, for a simple headswap he sure turned out very good.

I totally agree, its really the arms that I don't like.  They seem too "thick"  I may have to rework them somehow.

Darth Plagueis the Wise- Man that guy is scary looking. Is that the same mask CHEWIE used on his a while back? I think it fits him very well.

The helemt is a Brent Original (sort of).  I took a GI Joe Imperial Procession Guard and added sculpy around the neck to make it bigger.   Made a mold and then cast it out of resin, hollowed it out with a dremel and then painted it up.

Thanks on this guy.  He was a lot of fun and I was dying to try.  Once Chewie and Spectre through down the guantlet on Ephant Mon based customs I had to try one out!

Added a lot more detail on the Jedi Council Chamber.  It's pretty much finished except for the logos on the floor.  I'm also realized that I probably should paint the base of the floor the brownish-red color (that is the right color, huh??) and use the image from Nuib Nuib to get the yellowish color and images.  Maybe tomorrow.

I also haven't actually attached any of the pieces to the foamcore floor.  I'm not sure if I'm going to do that or not yet.  For the Photonovel work, I can probably just set it up something and take the photos I need.  Something like this:

Top-notch work Brent! :)

The columns are made from Styrene tubes (from Evergreen parts).  They are 1/2" hollow tubes painted with Gamesworkshop Chainmail metallic paint.  I think they are my favorite part of the whole set-up.  I know that they movie version are much much bigger but I think they look just fine like this!

Last update on the Jedi Council Chamber.  Without actually gluing everything down its finished (I think).  I painted a new floor color and added the center graphic.  Posed a few different Council members for fun:

I posted these photos over at Galactic Hunter as well and someone over there had an interesting idea to create a “3D” look to the windows.  They suggested printing various layers of the background image on Mylar and lining them up to create the effect.  You could even light from behind so that it would look like light was filtering through the windows.

Since GH doesn’t get that much foot traffic, I was posting this here to see if anyone has any insight on mylar “films” as far as printing goes.  I’m not entirely sure what Mylar film is but I could possible use transparency film but I’m not sure if you stack those up if it would blur the image.  Does anyone have any experience with printing on mylar?  Do you think this would even work?

Not sure about workig with mylar -- but transparencies would work.  It's a variation on a technique used for stage design.

I love these guys:

Great use of the AoD Ash head.  He reminds me of a "what-if" type jedi (like what if another jedi had to go into exile and be known as a crazy hermit like Obi-Wan)

Thats one awesome Jedi Chamber!  I love it.  The background is super.  THe floor is just amazing and the columns are outstanding.  I wish tht you could market this.  I'd buy one in a heartbeat.  Really outstanding work.

Where is that background from?  It makes the piece feel just like the movie set.

Thanks for the comments my friends.

Outrider - the background images and floor logo were printed from Nuib Nuib's site at Galactic Hunter.  The layered approach for the windows was created using Styrene sheets.

Greg - thanks for picking out a couple of customs to bring back.  I'm glad you liked the Shrumpel custom (Ephant based one).  He was fun to do and sat as a WIP for quite a while.  I never saw a Ephant in the wild so its funny that some how I picked up three of them via pretty inexpensive eBay channels.  I decided to sacrifice one for a custom :)

Chewie - that's twice you've promised comments on this one  :P  :P  :P

hyouriittai - I wish I could claim the Yaddle as a custom  ;D  It was actually one of the figures that came with the original two (Saga packaged) versions of the Jedi Council.  There are some great figures in those first two sets (Yaddle, Ransis, Yauref  - I'm sure I butchered all the spelling).

tykrazen - I may give the transparencies a shot and see how they turn out.  It would definitely require a complete rework on this set to make it happen though.

I'm sorry Brent, I've worked almost 45 hours in just three days.  My life is hell right now and it's going to be this way at work for a while.

But the Council looks great.  This is something I couldn't ever come close to doing, I can't cut a straight line with foamcore at all.  I am totally impressed with this, what a great little playset.  I'd love to have this over the one Hasbro made.  The floor printout too matches up perfectly.

On the huge Ephant Mon body guy, I have no idea how I missed that custom before, I guess becase I've been so busy.  That is one evil looking creep!

I've been lurking on the boards for a while, not posting much, but let me just say how god damned AWESOME all of this stuff is!  Wow!!!

The hulking ephant mon guy (forget the name, sorry) is absolutely amazing.  TERRIFIC paint job.  That is one scary mo fo, that's for sure!  Wow.

And the Ash jedi is wonderful, too.  Great beard, he really does look like a world-weary, but cool-as-hell jedi.

And the diorama...well, i remember the in-progress pics and this is probably the slickest, cleanest, nicest Jedi council dio i've seen.  And your digital effects are flawless and gorgeous.

WOW, that photonovel preview is incredible!!! I'm running out of superlatives.  What a cool custom, the Red Guard-based guy.  Amazing action shot, it's just a gorgeous image and you've got me REALLY intrigued to see this story!

Hurry back from across the pond and get this sucker on line!!!

Great work also on the sets/scenery -- great use of real sand.  (And the funny thing is, it looks perfeectly in scale, even though it is, of course, 1:1 sand!  :D )

Keep up the excellent work -- looking forward to more.

Still sitting here in Dijon, France sipping on some red wine.  Not a bad gig.  I didn't get as much work on the PN as I'd hoped on the plane.  Hopefully I can finish up some of the photoediting on the return flight Thursday morning.  I'll have at least one more set of photos to take and then the dialog to complete.  Maybe, just maybe I'll complete this over the weekend but it will likely spill into the following week.

Thanks for all the great comments from some of my way back customs.... let me try to address some individually.

Glassman - thanks for the compliments on the casting.  I had a good teacher :)  I'm so glad that everyone likes the Council chamber.  Its probably been my favorite project.  However, as I've said before, its surprising how simpe it was to actually put together ;-)

finds- the Sith Guard was made to be a specialized guard for Chancellor Palpatine/Darth Sidious - he first debuted way back on page 6.  You can go back there and see more pictures or what for the Photonovel :)  The head for this figure is as Greg pointed out Punisher from the Marvel Showdown line.  He's a good mean looking dude.

Quazar - thanks for all the great adjectives.  I never think I can live up to all the hype you give me but its very much appreciated.  I'm a bit worried that Chapter 3 will still not have enough action to keep everyone happy but its a necessary part of the story.  I truly appreciate all the comments on the Jedi Council.  I'm very pleased with how that has turned out but I'm already thinking of making a better more permenant version.

Gregorbian - I can still find Punisher quite regularly.  If you want one, let me know and I'll pick it up.  Its only 63 cents to ship loose figures.

D_N - thanks for the comments on the council chamber.  The structure is almost "mightycore" which is a strudier foamcore derrivative.  However, the true credit goes to Nuib Nuib  who made all the graphics that were used.  I really didn't add that much extra detailing to it.

V & smarty - glad you liked the preview.  I just got that Darth Maul figure in a trade from Jim here at JD and I knew I had to use him in the PN.  I love the tatoos.  The problem with this figure is that he's severely posed with the head angle.   I had to do some creative photography to make him look like he's in different postions.

The preiview looks great Brent! I can't wait for chapter 3. Don't worry about there being enough action. Action doesn't make a good photonovel, it is the story that does.

I can't wait to see the Council set in action!

Have a good time in France. :)

Title: Re: Brent's Customs - Updated 5/26 - A'Sharad Hett
Post by: BrentS on May 26, 2006, 04:49 PM
Its been almost a month since I actually posted a new custom figure.  I've been itching to get back to it.  I've been spending time with the diorama (Jedi Council) and the photonovel update.  Anyway, here is my first new figure that's finished.  My take on A'Sharad Hett:

The recipe is quite simple on this one.

Head-VSTC Tusken
Braid - POTF Slave Leia
Torso/Arms - Saga2 Sora Bulq
Hands - VSTC Tusken
Legs - VSTC Tusken
Robe - VSTC Tusken

I know he may not be completely accurate based on some of the reference photos but he's one (mine) interpretation.   ;D  All the parts were perfect fits except the head.  I needed to enlarge the ball with a little bit of greenstuff.  Using these parts he has maximum articulation.  This may be my new favorite custom.

I've got several more WIPs going on.  Maybe I can get another bigger update in tonight or later this weekend.

Hey Brents great figure, Is this guy gonna be in your PN, Cause if so this is before anakin right? A'sharad had just becom a knight when anakin was in AOTC so this should really be Sharad Hett his papa. Check out the wikipedia, and read up on the Hett family line.
Title: Re: Brent's Customs - Updated 5/26- A'Sharad Hett
Post by: BrentS on May 26, 2006, 05:33 PM
Thanks Smarty.  Once I made him I was going to try and use him in the PN but its hard to try to fit in "established" characters (even if they are EU) and keep the continuity.

I checked Wikipedia for some more info on the Hetts.  Here is one excerpt from A'Shard's entry:

Hett participated on a mission to locate Aurra Sing before The Battle of Naboo. He also went on a mission to Malastare with many Jedi Council Members.

Seems to me that a case could be made that A'Sharad was already a knight at this time of my storyline.  Who knows, he could be hunting for Aurra Sing too  ;)   Anyway, thanks for pointing me back to Wikipedia.  My only reference so far was the Star Wars Ultimate Visual guide.
Title: Re: Brent's Customs - Updated 5/26- A'Sharad Hett
Post by: Smartypants1635 on May 26, 2006, 06:03 PM
Hmmm ok that makes sense, But, Hett is only 5.1 glactic standard years older than  Anakin so this could be Sharad and you could use a tusken child as a'sharad.

I researched the DOB's of the 2 characters. So by process of logic, we can determine that when Hett left to train he was 15 and kiadi trained him for roughly a year, and during this year he fought aurra sing( im getting all of this from the wiki) becuase he had to fight her before the battle of Naboo.

Then at the end of that year anakin was in the battle of Naboo, Hett(15-16 years) is now an apprentice of Dark woman and anakin(11year) is apprentice of Obi-Wan.

Brent trying to follow EU is definitely tough.  But it doesn't have to be perfect, I always have a hard time (but fun too) trying to work that stuff into the Rykrof series.

Your custom is awesome.  Simple but at the same time it doesn't need to be overly complex.  I like the use of the VSTC Tusken robes for him, looks perfect!

Post by: BrentS on May 27, 2006, 01:40 AM
Promised another update, so here is a couple more figures I finished up tonight.

First up is Diva Shaliqua (or at least an fan-fic version of her):

Recipe:

Head - Sly Moore
Hair - Rystall
Torso/Arms - POTF Slave Leia
Legs - ROTS Aalya Secura
Jacket - Elisabeth Swan (Pirates of the Caribbean)

I may have to rework the neck as it may be a bit too stubby.  The Sly Moore face isn't as pretty as I would like for her but it was a decent head that was readily available in my custom fodder kit.

Next up a Weequay from Gardulla's court.  I haven't decided on his job just yet.  Probably will be the head of Security.

Recipe
Head - Sora Bulq
Body - Saga2 Garindian
Robel - Ketwol

Cool customs, Brent!  I like the weequay quite a lot, very cool.

Diva is nice, too, but I don't like the use of the creepy, zombie-like Sly Moore head.  She gives me the willies (and her skin tone doesn't quite match her body.)

Still, the rest is a very clever use of parts.  Just give her a prettier head, man!

Nice work all around!

That has to be the coolest Weequay I've seen ever. I just love the look of Sora's hair shaved off, he looks alot meaner. I guess it's a sure sign that the Tatooine wave's hitting when you use one in a custom, lol. The robe looks really natural on the body and really complements an already great custom.

The Diva looks cool to, but as a minor critique, the face paint doesn't matc hthe body paint...just a small observation.

You guys are probably right on Diva.  I do the best I can with my "disability"  ;)  What color tones do I need to add to make them match more.  I'm also contemplating another head swap for her.

The face tone is more of a sickly green while the body is a bright fleshtone. Man, it must suck to be a colorblind customizer. Bet it's hard.

Very cool stuff in here.

Shrumpel Thichna is one of my favorites.  I love the use of the Clown head...the scale really gives this character an alien appearance, and your paint really brings the whole thing together.  A great design that you have made work extremely well.

The Jedi Council chamber is an impressive diorama...it looks beautiful.  The paint is clean and consistent, the colors look and feel right, and the whole production is very authentic.

Diva Shaliqua - I'd say try and repaint all of her skin and face, so it's all one consistent color.  Everything else about this is just spectacular.  Wonderful use of parts!  She looks like a hard body with ugly face.  Just the kind of woman who could kick a guy's ass.

Weequay - That's probably the meanest looking Weequay I've seen anyone make.  Just a tough looking guy and a great use of parts.  How did you already get a Garindan figure?

GREAT UPDATE BRENT!

 :)

Nice set of updates Brent.  I really like how these turned out.

A'Sharad Hett - This one is my favorite out of the bunch.  Its a nice and simple version of Hett and the parts flow really good together.  Although not comic book acurate, i think he goes better with the look of the other jedi.  I will definitely be "borrowing" your recipe for this one.   ;D

Diva Shaliqua - The part choices on this one is completely amazing.  They all work really well and flow nicely together.  Just a little repaint of the flesh tones and she will be great.

Weequay - Overall a nice looking weequay thug.  He has a great mean scowl to him.

I'm back from my mini-trip this weekend.  Got in a small bit of custom time tonight.

Thanks for all the feedback.  On the Weequay, I'm getting an awful lot of credit for Hasbro's fine mold.  I did very little for this custom other than put some parts together.  I found a Garindan at TRU last friday and I couldn't resist.  Normally, I'll wait until I have two of a figure before I cut it apart.  Hopefully I find more :) :)

I took everyones advice and did a repaint of the entire skin tone.  The only decent "flesh" color I had was Fair Maiden Shadow so she's definitely much paler now. Let me know what you think.

I'm going to put her jacket back on after I spray some dull-coate first.  Without the jacket you can see how the hips are somewhat mismatched  ;)
Title: Re: Brent's Customs - Updated 5/29- Updated Diva
Post by: Fritzkrieg on May 29, 2006, 06:51 AM
Nice update.

I love the parts mix on the Diva. Thel meld together very well. The Pirate's jacket works well. Is it removable or did you have to cut it off the original fig.?

The Weequay looks good, except for the robe, which to me, look like it was cut for maturnity wear. I think a nice vest would go a long way to improving this custom.

Keep up the great work!

Post by: BrentS on May 29, 2006, 06:36 PM
The Jacket is glued down in a couple of places but its relatively easy to remove.  There is a whole in the back (upper shoulder) where the pouch thing she is wearing is attached also.

I'm finishing up another custom for Gardulla's Fortress.  Here is a Twi'lek Beast Master.  The perspective is off a little in this photo.  The head doesn't look quite as large in person.

Recipe:
Head - Orn Free Ta, eye patch sculpted with greenstuff.  Scarring also added with greenstuff
Torso - Boss Nass
Arms, Legs - Malakili

I didn't realize how hard it would be to get the legs to swap out of the Boss Nass body.  I basically had to sacrifice the leg articulation (not that there was much there anyway) to glue them into place.  I may need to touch up some the face to hide the blue that leaked through :)

wow, that looks great! the green skin and the spots look just awsome. good parts mix too. i might add a skirt or kilt type deal to him, just a suggestion, it may hide the strange look of the leg joints. great custom though!

What a great use of parts that typically no one ever uses. He is one of the most bizaar aliens I've ever seen. I think he should be a space pirate instead of beast master.

Brent, your updates keep getting better and better!

Diva - Outstanding work here, the parts already look fantastic, but the repainting of the flesh is just perfect!

Beast Master - Nice!  Excellent color scheme and an interesting, ugly creature.   I love it.  And I agree, some sort of kilt/kama would top it off perfectly!

Really nice looking and original stuff man!  I love that beast master!  That kilt looks dynamite!  Very original concept and great execution!  They could be used in Black sun dioramas, boonta Eve, Jabbas dioramas, cantinas etc.  I love when customs can be used in a variety of displays.  Really cool stuff !

Bumpity....

I've gone back and added a custom kilt to this figure.  I think its a 100% percent improvement on him.  Thanks to Jedistyle and Word Weaver for the Kilt inspiration.

I've also named this guy - Aat'nro Eerf, the beast master for Gardulla the Hutt.

They make such a lovely couple, soooooo hideous, I like the skirt design you gave the Beast master, it looks really cool.
On Gardulla, I'd make her head a bit more pointy at the top, she didnt seem to have ethose perfect squished heads we see that Jabba did.

Great job on this set!  Its great to see some completely original concepts and designs such as these 2 cool figures.  Great to see such a great custom hutt.  They both came out great.  Each one has great features , the beast master's kilt came out great.  Nice to see some custom soft goods!

Gardula is just awesome.  Those breasts....sexy!

Aat'nro is awesome!  I love the parts choice and paint apps and the use of the kilt is really cool.  Great figure, he fits right in with a Huttese court!

Gardulla - Looking good so far.  The sculpting blends seamlessly with the actual figure.  I can't wait to see her finished

Weequay - friggin' cool!  He looks badass and, like Aat'nro, definitely fits in with a Huttese court.

I really like the parts choice/paint apps on the Diva.  I didn't realize Rystall's hair was removable.  Interesting and effective idea to put it on Sly Moore's head.

Sorry for the double post but I wanted to get these MCC figures into my own thread.  I can tell I haven't done any figure customs in a while as this thread went all the way to page 4  :)

MCC SLAVE:

Sebulba's Twi'lek Masseuse (Number 1):
Overall, I'm pretty pleased.  I may need to clean up the gown a little bit.  Obviously there are several things that don't make this movie accurate (no sleeves, no bare feet, silver armlets).

Recipe:

Face - Anika Sub5
Tendrils - Ayy Vida
Torso - Anika Sub5
Legs - POTF2 Slave Leia
Hands - random female hands in my fodder bin
Neckring - POTF2 Slave Leia (I think)

MCC IMPERIALS

These are two guys I've planned on making for a while.  Relatively simple headswaps:

Captain Piett:

Recipe:
Head - POTF2 Piett (dremmeled to a ball socket)
Body - Saga2 Veers

Grand Moff Tarkin

Here's a shot of two Tarkins:

Recipe:
Head:  POTF2 Tarkin (dremmeled to a ball socket)
Body: ROTS Tarkin

For both of these Imperials, the POTF heads are smaller than the ROTS/Saga version.  I had to dremel down the neck posts and repaint them as well.  Hopefully I got the paint color close enough.  However, as you know with me its always an adventure :)

Since this is a double post - I'll give you a bonus shot of a WIP that didn't quite make the deadline for Slaves.  Here is a custom of our favorite Young Jedi turned Sith Lord :

Recipe:
Torso: EP1 Padme (plus significant greenstuff)
Head/Arms:  POTJ Shmi

I wanted to include this in the MCC but I just got to do the greenstuff tonight and it needs to cure overnight before I can paint it up.

Well, its way to late and I need to go to bed.

Brent,
Great work. I was wondering how to make a more form fitting suit on that Twi'lek of yours and I think I have the answer. There is the stuff for material no fray or something like that. It is a liquid and you can soak or brush it on and when it dries become stiff. You might want to try it before you place it on the figure. I don't know what it would do to paint. Just an idea maybe for your next one. Other than that everything looks awesome.

Double post here but I wanted to give my little custom thread a nudge :)

Here's my WIP on a potential Security Guard.  I went with Chewie's "minimalist" approach in making this guy easy to reproduce and not use too many different parts.

The recipe is pretty straight forward:

Head - Firespeeder Pilot
Torso - Garindan
Arms - Garindan
Holster - Garindan
Bandolier - Hem Dazon
Legs - Firespeeder Pilot

Now, my question for the group.  What color should I paint this?  Paint the torso to match the arms or the legs to match the torso or paint the lower torso and legs completely different?

I'm also thinking about adding a bit of greenstuff to cover up the slight gaps in the inner thighs.

Any thoughts and/or advice on how to proceed?

Here is the finished product for the Securty Guard Concept for the Ultimate Group Project:

I went with a basic paint update - light gray on torso and legs.  I also updated the sliver parts of the holster and arms to a bronze paint (hopefully) similar to the helmet and boots.

Now a departure for me...  I've seen several really cool Galactic Heroes customs recently and I've been wanting to a take a shot at them.   Here are my first two attempts:

Quinlan Vos:

Darth Nihilus:

I don't really collect the Galactic Heroes figures but my Nephew's love them.  I'm going to practice on these on and off for a while  to figure out the nuances and then make a real nice set for them for Christmas.  Luckily they aren't old enough to read yet or I would have spoiled their surprise  ;)

As always, comments, questions, suggestions, and criticisms are welcome

P.S.  For those who've been following the Gardulla Palace diorama, I haven't stopped working on it but I've just decided to hold back the updates.  I don't want to spoil the final product before it debuts in the next chapter of my PN.

All the Imperials look nice Brent.  Kind of simple, which is fine.  I really like the ANH version of Tarkin.

The Twilek is great.  You definitely should be pleased with that. It's a very creative custom and the mesh outfit looks outstanding.

The Security Guard looks fantastic, the only thing I might change is the legs.  I guess for whatever reason I never liked those on the Firespeeder pilot... might be me just being scared of painting those knee joints.

Shmi - AWESOME.  Anyone who thinks that characters like this aren't great customs is really missing out.  What a great job sculpting and painting.  This will add so much to your photonovel.  While most people use regular figures, you go the extra mile!

Recipe:
Head - Commander Cody
Body - ROTS SA Clone Trooper
Pauldron - POTF2 Sandtrooper
Helmet - not sure, found it in my parts bin.  I think it is a Stormtrooper Luke or Han helmet.

Also here is my entry for the Group Project - Jango Fett.  I know this isn't nearly the "Ultimate Jango Fett" but it suits my purposes. I took a stab at him as a prisoner (without his armor).

I did paint up some armor but it is not set to fit him.

Use your imagination and you can envision this is a subtle preview for an upcoming chapter in the Duel of the Sith Photonovel.  Also, if you look extra close there is a little sneak peak at an new and improved section of the Palace set.

Recipe is very basic
Head - Jango from the Saga line (not sure which one even)
Body - Han Solo in Carbonite (Saga 2)

This is still around TPM right it hasn't gone much farther. If so this is perfect you can have Hett in the palace wanting to kill Gardulla for his fathers death and Jango breaks free and feads gardulla to her krayt. excellant. IF you have Jango for that reason you incorporated the EU perfectly brent. I aplaud you, plus they are great customs.

prisoner feyy - definetley a good idea for gardulla's palace, the color looks great, mabey give him a bit of a beard like in the comics when he was a prisoner, other than that great custom!

I'm glad you like them.  They are both pretty basic and may not be my best paint jobs.  I haven't customized a clone figure in quite a while!

Smarty - you are certainly on the right wavelength.  I'm not sure I'll be able to tie it all together with the cameos but that is what I was thinking :)

Two new customs for you tonight.  I present a pair of Ithorians.  These guys eventually will be band members at Gardulla's Palace.  However, in the meantime they are just two dudes hanging out, and sharing a laugh:

I did notice that the paint on the one overcoat is already chipping.  I'm going to have to touch that up and seal it.

Recipe(s):
Heads and Hands - POTF or Saga Momaw
Bodies - ROTS Mas Amedda
Overcoat - EP1 Boss Nass

I have to confess, I stole this recipe from Chewie  ;)

Update time.  I fixed the problems with the Ithorians that were bugging me.  I've named them Rowna and Nurow Candora.  I also finished up their lead singer, named Syltana.

First Up is a solo for Syltana.  She is the same species as Rystall's alien mother.  (Anyone got the name of this one?).

Here is a group shot.  Rowna is the shorter one.  I took this picture with a little less light so that the reflective vest on Syltana didn't reflect so much.

Finally, here is the band in action.  Rowna plays the electro-organ and Nurow specializes in the Uboo.

I fixed Rowna by dremeling out the head a bit more and trimming back the neck post.  I tried to maintain articulation but was unsucessful.  I had to glue him down  :-\  Oh well, he is articulated everywhere else!

On Nurow, I added some extra sculpted trim around the sash to make it not look quite so "glued on".

I'm not sure if I'm entirely pleased with the way the instruments turned out.  I'll see if they grow on me.

As always, I welcome comments and criticisms.  Enjoy.

P.S.  I'm taking suggestions for name of the "Band".

Post by: BrentS on August 6, 2006, 04:18 PM
Here's another quick update.  Nothing super fancy about these customs.  Mostly just repaints.  I needed a variety of droids for the upcoming Photonovel work.

X-LOM:  This is second revision protocol droid that acts as a translator for Gardulla the Hutt.  "He" was spliced together by Jawas and sold for a very cheap price.  Gardulla, like Jabba, has a temper when it comes to translators so it doesn't pay to have an expensive unit.

Recipe is easy enough - Head EV-D9 with a 4-LOM body.  The head is a bit loose but it allows for full articulation.

3-1B4 Medical Droid:  This medical droid attends to Gardulla's Bacta Tanks.

Just a straight 2-1B repaint.  Very subtle on the bronze, silver, and black.

Power Droid

This is the second power droid I've repainted.  They both came out lookging very similar.

DUM-7R - this is a modified Pit Droid.  It is used in Gardulla's medical facility as an assitant.

Recipe:
Head - Senate Camera (EP1 Palpatine)
Body - EP1 Pit Droid (from one of the podracers I think).

Looks great!

Though I would be a bit concerned with one of those pit droids assisting with medical work...someone might wake up with new thruster pods!!! (I am not only a pod racer pilot, I am my own pod racer!)

So is X-LOM green from Gardulla slime? (Like what happened to C-3PO?)

Just so you know...I'm gonna make a Jango like that...no reason to post it later, but I thought you'd like to know. It's really a great looking figure and I'm looking forward to making it.

Thanks for all the kind words.

Straxus - yes, my pit droid will only have very menial tasks and nothing life dependent :)

Jediknight - the Jango turned out pretty well.  I think the Han body might be a bit too "thin" or at least not bulky enough; however, I still think the custom works.

Xanthos - I love power droids.  Glad you liked him too.

Nice update,

I'd have to say that the Taller Ithorian is my favorite of the lot. Great Paint aps on the Robes. It really gives the Clothe a lot of depth, and the collar piece really helps keep the Head looking natural on that Body,
Where is the Body from?

Keep up the great work,

Thank Fritz, the body for the Ithorians are from the ROTS Mas Amedda figure.  Great body under that hulking robe.

I've decided on a  name the Slyorians.  That was submitted by someone from FFURG (I'm pretty sure).  A close runner up was the Midi-thorians.

Anyway, update tonight on four random Aliens for Gardulla's Palace or other parts of Tatooine's underworld.

Xandor Doth
(http://i7.photobucket.com/albums/y271/cerius31/walrus.jpg)
Head/Hands: Ponda Baba
Body: Saga Lott Dodd

Lithru Qosh
(http://i7.photobucket.com/albums/y271/cerius31/Klatu.jpg)
Head: Klaatu
Body: ROTS Utapau Warrior
Legs: Saga Sora Bulq (I think)

Rynth Juca
(http://i7.photobucket.com/albums/y271/cerius31/Myo.jpg)
This is a no paint custom
Head: OTC Myo
Torso: VSTC Tusken
Hands: Saga2 Sora Bulq (I think)
Legs: EP1 Darth Maul (trust me)
Skirt: ROTS Shaak Ti

Guintho Marloors
(http://i7.photobucket.com/albums/y271/cerius31/Duros.jpg)
Head: Ellorrs
Body: Not sure, I could find out if I tried POTF2 Cantina Band Member
Hands: ROTS Mas Amedda
Cape: Saga 2 Garidinan

The head is actually a cast I made from the Ellorrs figure and painted from scratch.  I'm definitely curious on thoughts on that one.

Update for some more Tatooine Aliens for the Photonovel.  Some will be in the Palace and some will be used elsewhere on Tatooine.

Duronden - Kubaz Smuggler

Rynault Vizro --  Sakiyan Spacer

and finally just a little update on Teemto Pagalies.  Not much of a custom but I did give him a new belt, some waist packs, an ear wrap, some paint wash and of course a fancy new vest.

Teemto will be visiting Gardulla's Court for a celebration after the Boonta Eve Pod Race.

If you look closely there is a small tease on additions made to a portion of Gardulla's Palace.

Other updates of note.  I put all of my finishing touches on the Palace.  Findswoman is creating some awesome accessories for me to use in the Palace and once she finishes those up it will be officially finished.

I've got several more customs I need to make to round out the Palace and the Photonovel but I'm getting real close.

Enjoy!  As always, I welcome comments, criticisms, and suggestions.

First up, a return of an early favorite - Hamma Gringol
(http://i7.photobucket.com/albums/y271/cerius31/Hamma_V2.jpg)

Second, every Hutt needs a quality Gammorean Guard.  I've picked up several POTF versions and wanted to give him a fresh update.  Here he is:

Based on suggestions from users at Yakface, I've added some drool to the Gammorean Guard.  Here is the new and improved finished product.  I really like the way it turned out.

A couple more aliens finished up...

I added a second Masseuse for our favorite Dug.  The one on the right is the new one.  I cleaned up the coverall on the previous one.  Once I can find some more of the plastic rubberband thingies and I'll clean up the other one too.  Of note on the new one is that it is a cast head and torso.

My entry for the Yakfinities Challenge - Order 66 Survivors.  My favorite SW character and my first custom of this guy:

Here he is in his sullen, depressed state.  I love how well detailed the Hasbro sculpt really is.

I actually put more into this custom than meets the eye.  Obviously the hair is unique but I also swapped out hands from the VOTC version and repainted the feet.  The robe and necklace are also from the VOTC version.  I added a good bit of wash and drybrushing to the undertunics but its not too visible.

Created for the Yakfinities challenge, I present a pair of wookies:

Wookie Shaman:

You can probably guess but he was made from an older Chewbacca (not even sure which one) with a dremeling around the bandolier and additional sculpting of the fur.  The braids were cut off the ROTS wookie warrior.  The other hair was sculpted with fixit.  The staff is sculpted from fixit sculpt and the feather is from my little girls craft drawer :)

Wookie Warrior:

He is the ROTS Wookie Warrior heavily sculpted with Fixit.  Not quite up to par with Sith_Fire's work but its a start :)

The landscape is a WIP I've been putting together to support the UGP.  Its my take on the Dantooine style landscape.

Of course, the requisite mini diorama:

and lastly.  Here is a WIP before it was painted.  You can see sort of what went into it:

Stellar job on that vaporator Brent. It is really top notch. You did such a great job making the greeblies look believable, as opposed to them just being randomly thrown on there. What is that black, almost bullet looking, object at the top there? I can swear I've seen it somewhere before but I can't remember where.

The wookiees are looking good too. I like the "Alfalfa" look the skiney one has going. I like the armor additions and the accessory combos they've got going, it helps to vary them up and and make them look different. The fur addition on the upper thights of the big guy look nice too. The back of the dreadlocks look great. There is something a little off about the top of the head though. It looks too big and bulky. I had the same problem when I sculpted similar dreads onto a wookiee custom I made awhile back. I never could get it to look quite right. It's a tricky spot to sculpt that's for sure. (Sorry this is so late incoming by the way, I don't know how I missed the wookiees.) :-[

Well, thats me being behind as usual ( or is that me being an ass? Im not sure.) But I love the vaporator. Even seeing the wip I still cant beleive it was made from  junk you had lying around. Youve got an excellent eye for this.

Love the Wookies too. I like the scrawney looking shamen he's the best.

THe dreadlocks on the bigger one are really nice too. I have a question though? Is that sculpy? If so I have another question. Whenever I use sculpey to do this kind of thing, they usually break off because of the brittleness. Does that happen top you ?

*** Blowing the dust off this topic ***

Well, the comic packs and the puffy A'Sharad head got me off my butt and back to SW customizing.  Here I present two customs wrapped around one body.

Nothing too fancy, but improvements in my mind.

What I did is put a magnet in the neck hole of A'Sharad's body.  I used the Tusken with the head magnet from the Saga series, added the braid and repainted the wrappings.  I then dremeled out the human head and added a magnet there too.  Now I have one body, with two interchangable heads.  The magnets I used are Rare Earth Magnets (much stronger than the one in the original tusken head.  The heads are nice and tight.

I'm working on a third head for this figure (more like the one in the Hunt for Aura Sing comics.  However, I didn't take any photos yet - the Fixit Scuplt is curing.  I'm going to need a third braid for this head.  If anyone has an extra A'Sharad head, I'd be interested in it (drop me a PM) - otherwise I'll have to hunt for another comic pack.

I also started on my most ambitious sculpting project ever (not nearly as big as Sith Fires though) - I hope to provide some WIP photos soon.

Felt good to play with some SW Figures again.

A second update for me for over the same weekend!  Here is part of my big sculpting project.  As some of you know, I'm kind of a Jawa nut.  A while ago, EUCustomMan made some cool Jawa children.  I decided to try and make some myself.  Here are WIPs of the first two.  I included some standard Jawas for scale.

Good idea. Are you going to be casting these or just leaving them as sculpty? I like the idea of kid Jawas. I wonder what a jawa female looks like under the robes.
Title: Re: Brent's Customs - Updated 8/12 - Jawa Children WIP

Thanks a lot guys.  I've actually made some progress on both of these.

Looks good so far brent. Cant wait to see them casted and painted.

Thats the big question... I've been debating on whether or not I should cast them.  In some ways, I'd like to see how the details come out painted before I go through the effort of casting them.  On the other hand, I'm not sure I'll want to cast them after they are painted (although I have no reason to believe painting will affect the casting process).  Also, with the undercuts of the arms, I may have to dissamble the Jawa in order to get him cast correctly.

Ah, decisions, decisions....

Quote from: Master_Prhuby
Are you going to be casting these or just leaving them as sculpty?

These are actually sculpted using Fixit sculpt so they are much more sturdy than sculpy.

Haven't been doing much SW customs recently, though I do have a bunch put together sitting on my work bench.

I have started collecting Kubricks and so I naturally decided they neede their own diorama.  I've shown this in some other forum thread but just in case the customizers don't venture out much, I figured I show it here too.

Here's my first one.

I love it!

I'm guilty of dragging my kubricks off to various sets for photo shoots, and would love to start putting together a more permanent setting for some of them.

A few ideas scribbled down for myself to remember and others to do a better job on:

vintage dewbacks absoultely rock with kubrick sandtroopers, and the saga escape pod is a good prop as well (Vintage tauntaun looks good with Han, but we need a hoth luke kubrick so we can use the wampa too)

the saga sandcrawler looks good with a team of jawas carting off R5-D4

The POTF2 Bantha fits right in with a pack of bricky tuskens

The action fleet ships look cool next to their pilots, even if the scale is off. I would like to put together a TIE hangar with a dozen ships and catwalks for the TIE pilots and misc imperials to be roaming

And then there are those bounty hunters looking for a good starfleet destroyer command bridge to hang around in

Nice work on the customs Brent, I'm glad you've taken kubricks to another level!

That is very cool. It looks like a little diorama set that should be sold.

Thanks guys!

Dan - those are some great ideas.  I remember seeing the Vintage Dewback with the Kubricks.  I'd already considered the Sandcrawler option as well  ;)  I didn't think about the Escape Pod.  That's a cool idea.

I've got more Dioramas being bandied about in my mind.  None of these are permanent displays just a little fun with displaying for photoshoots.
