Title: Say, what's your favorite warm beverage?
Post by: Matt on January 18, 2006, 04:00 PM
Hot chocolate?  Coffee?  An espresso?  Cappucino?  A latte?  Hot tea (because you're a "hottie")*?  Hot apple cider?  Warm milk?  Something else?

I only start this (seemingly-inane) topic because I got me one of them newfangled Tassimo single-cup coffee makers, and I'll be damned if it's not the most-kickass invention of all time.

(Funny article, where that pic comes from, by the way.)

I'm enjoying some lovely hot chocolate from it, even as we speak.  Because you see, it's not only a coffee-maker, but it also makes most of that other stuff I mentioned, too (with the exception of the cider and milk), provided you've got the "t-disks" for them.

But anyway, it's great.  I find myself using it more for hot chocolate than anything, but I've also liked the tea.  The cappucinos and lattes (what's the difference in those two, anyway?) aren't too bad, either.

I'm really not too much of a coffee drinker, I guess.  On the rare occasion when I will have some ("yes, have some")*, I load it up with so much milk and sugar that it can hardly be considered "coffee" anymore.

What about you?

I like sweet tea (warm or cold), coffee (black with sugar), apple cider, and hot chocolate.

How big is that piece of machinery, by the way? It looks bigger than my microwave.

My favorite is from 7-11:

24 oz cup, 1/2 Regular Cappucino, 1/4 Hot Chocolate, 1/4 Milk and stir.... YUMMY!  ;D

That machine is beastly looking...

Hot chocolate for me.

That is one snazzy piece of machinery there Cosby. I'm in the same boat as you, when on rare occasions I do drink coffee I need at least 3 creamers cup things and 6 packs of sugar.

That machine, it's really not that large.  Around 12" tall, 11" wide, and 10" deep.

I guess it's about the same size as the average human head.

This thread, by the way, is kind of practice for me for when I'm entertaining guests.

I'll say "would you care for a warm beverage?"

And they'll say "yes, yes I would."

And then I'll say "well, what would you like?"

And then they'll say "well, what do you have?"

And it will go on and on until eventually, by process of elimination, we've determined what exactly they'd like to drink.

So what I'm kind of doing here, is using you guys as a test market to find out what all kinds of warm beverages I should stock for my Tassimo.

Coffee, cream, one sugar.

Although coffee with booze in it is good too.

I like Hot Cocoa or "regular" coffee with maybe a hint of milk and sugar (none of that fangled "fancy" coffee for me).

I hate coffee.  Hate it.  Tastes like crap and gives me the runs.  Which is a shame because I am not a morning person and could really use the caffeine boost in the morning.

However, I don't mind hot chocolate for those cold days or tea with honey when I'm sick.  I guess I don't drink a lot of hot/warm drinks.

I don't drink coffee which has caused some odd looks, especially when I worked at Lowe's and coffee and cigarettes were a given on break.

I like my hot chocolate in the winter though.

I understand that there's a difference between hot chocolate and hot cocoa, just as I also understand that there's a difference between a latte and a cappucino.  However, I don't understand exactly what those differences are.

Anybody know, or shall I pull up Wikipedia?

I really like coffee with a flavored fat-free creamer and 2 Splenda packets

But my real question is if you can make a Hot Toddy in that there machine?

I like coffee in the am with no sugar and a flavored cream.  I also like Irish Breakfast Tea, hot chocolate, cafe au lait and a hot toddy now and again.

I understand that there's a difference between hot chocolate and hot cocoa...

I believe it has to do with the chocolate involved.

In order for it to be "real" Hot Chocolate, you need to use actual chocolate that has been shaved/chopped and melted into milk.

If you are using cocoa powder or some variant of chocolate, it's just Hot Cocoa.

Or something like that...

Don't know a great deal about cappucinos but aren't they basically espresso drinks with a bit of froth on top whereas a latte is a shot of espresso and about 2/3 to 3/4 steamed milk with a little bit of foam?  Was never really into Starbucks or paying 4-5 bucks for a cup of coffee.
Title: Re: Say, what's your favorite warm beverage?

I've never stepped foot into a Starbucks in my entire life, and now, thanks to my Tassimo machine, I'll never have to.

Thanks for the cocoa/chocolate clarification, Jeff.  Am I to believe that hot chocolate is to be considered "better" than hot cocoa?

And thanks for the help with lattes and cappucino, Tamidala.  To be honest, I still really don't get it, though.  I start seeing terms like "froth" vs. "foam," and "steamed milk" and stuff like that, and after a while, my eyes just kind of start to glaze over.  I guess that's why I've never been much for Starbucks.  Too complicated for a relative simpleton like myself.

Funny this comes up.  I've been drinking a cup of cocoa almost every night since last week or so.  Good stuff.

I like cofee fine, but rarely drink it.  If I do, it's after a big meal.  I don't like it in the mornings at all. . turns my stomach sour.

Wifey, though, lurves the stuff in the morning so we brew a pot in the Bunn almost every day.

I also don't like it piping hot. . .warm is good.  I remember my grandfather used to pour a cup and immediately pop it in the microwave.  Gyah!!!  Especially in the summer.  The hotter it was outside, the more coffee he drank.

Usually it's cocoa or hot tea for me.

I've never stepped foot into a Starbucks in my entire life, and now, thanks to my Tassimo machine, I'll never have to.

I was able to say the same until one sub-zero day 3 years ago in Vienna.  The girlfriend and her family all decided to get something hot and I was obliged to go with them.  Go figure...I ended up with a hot chocolate.

According to Wikipedia a cappuccino is 1/3 espresso, 1/3 steamed milk, and 1/3 foamed milk.  A latte is 1/3 cappucino and 2/3 steamed milk.

Hot Toddy for me! If we're talking special occasions, like catching a cold.

Everyday though, its coffee, no sugar.

Hot tea for the hottie? OMG, that's just sick!

Our local coffee house has a drink called a "steamer" which is a very smooth hot chocolate, made latte style.  Its super.

Yes.  I was in a coffee house in Chattanooga with friends and they had a Chocolate Steamer on the menu.

I couldn't stop sniggering at it, and was barely controlling a guffah.

In my mind, there was this dialogue going on:

Me - "I'd like a Dirty Sanchez"
Coffe girl - "Sir?"
Me - "Chocolate Steamer. . .whatever."

Hot tea.

Earl Grey, or Peppermint tea, generally.

Some mornings I drink black coffee, with nothing else in it but a plastic spoon.

I'm really not a coffee drink either. I can't stand the taste. I'll drink tea with honey from time to time. But Hot Cocoa would have to be my favorite. I just buy the Swiss Miss (or some other similar brand) and I usually mix in some cinnamon and nutmeg and when I make it I use milk instead of water and I usually add some vanilla and put a little whipped cream with cinnamon on top.

Kayo hot cocoa but Swiss Miss milk chocolate is pretty good too.  I like mine made with water so the Godiva stuff I got for Christmas that youhave to make with milk is gross.  Hard to believe anything labeled Godiva would  be a turn off but it is.

Love coffee. Any which way:
Black
with cream and sugar
with flavored creamer
from Starbucks
from 7-11
from the local diner
with breakfast
with lunch
with dinner
on a plane
on a train
on a boat
or with a goat
I love coffee, I am I am
I love coffee with eggs and ham :P

I also enjoy hot coco (made with milk not with Hot water. And the hot coco that is made from melted chocolate instead of the powered stuff)

Also like most varieties of tea.

Hey, buddy, I don't know what you want me to say.

But I do know that I have gotten some good ideas for entertaining guests in the future from this thread.

For example:

I'll say "would you care for a warm beverage?"

And they'll say "yes, yes I would."

And then I'll say "well, what would you like?"

And then they'll say "A Hot Toddy."

And after she has a few of those, maybe I'll suggest she try a steamer.

"What's a steamer?" she'll say.

"Well, let me show you."

Only problem is that the Tassimo isn't equipped to make steamers, as far as I know.

Maybe I should have gone with it's sister model, the Assimo.

All this talk about protein and teabags made me wonder what direction the thread had taken.  :)

I had tea tonight...  MMMMMMmmm Tea.  I drink coffee, tea (just regular red rose tea), hot chocolate, Cappucino, other coffee/espresso drinks...  I just like stuff like that.

Love mixin' in some whiskey or whatnot too.  Not good to drink too much and get sick on, but good to definitely get a buzz going with some good conversation.

Bein' Mormon and all, hot drinks are verbotten (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Word_of_Wisdom_(Latter-day_Saint)).

Being the rebel I am, though, I tried coffee in high school and hated it.  Now at my work where everyone is a coffee fiend and I have to smell it brewing, I still hate it.

I have to admit to an occasional lapse into the pleasure of a soy chai latte, though.  But the last time I did, God punished me by burning my tongue really bad.

Don't tell Deanpaul, though, or he'll narc me out.

Not that it'll help your Sango, but next time put a metal spoon in the cup/bowl before you pour in the hot liquid.  The metal seems to disperse/absorb some of the heat preventing that breakage.  I've been doing that since I was living at home and my mom taught it to me.  Nothing's broken since.  No idea if it's just blind luck or not, but worth a shot?

Believe it or not, I've been giving serious thought to bumping this thread over the last few days.  And tonight, completely coincidentally, Tracy has referenced it in a different thread, which I take as a serendipitous sign from the Lord above that it is indeed the time to bump this one up.

You see, over the last couple of days, I've found the love of my life, and her name is Chai tea.  And this isn't puppy love, or some summer fling, or some teenage crush--this is the real deal.  I am deeply in love with Chai tea.  And some of you may be saying "Matt, if you love Chai tea so much, why don't you marry it?"  All jokes aside, that is exactly what I intend to do.  In all my life, never have I tasted as delicious a concoction as Chai tea.  She's great by herself, but add in some milk and sugar, and oh my lord, it's like I've died and gone to Heaven.

Sorry, Ambrosia, there's a new nectar of the Gods in town, and her name is Chai tea.

But I have discovered that Chai tea goes really well with the new Arch Deluxe hamburger from McDonald's.  You guys should really give it a try.  An unlikely taste combination, yes, but one that is to die for.  You can thank me later.

Didn't I just make nearly the same exact joke myself?

i can't speak to how it is warm, but it's probably just as delicious. it's fun to drink while you sort through your Beanie Babies.

Sorry, buddy--my fridge is all filled up with Zima and Crystal Pepsi right now, so maybe some other time.

(How'd you know about my Beanie Babies?)

(By the way, you're 0-for-2 tonight, Scott--just like how you'll be against me in pick 'em football in a few weeks.  Funny, that.)

I'm a little under the weather, I'll admit not being on not bringing my "A" stuff.  But I'll be back.

To get this thread back on track...was the Arch Deluxe the last burger you had at the Golden Arches?

I'm eagerly awaiting that day.

Mid-April.  2001.  McDonald's.  Inside a Wal-Mart.  Renton, Washington.  On the way to see Jimi Hendrix' grave.  Quarter-Pounder with Cheese.

That was the last McDonald's "hamburger" I ever consumed.

Or ever will.

I've never told this to anyone before.

 ::)

I've never experienced the pleasures of a Shamrock Shake in my entire life.

Also, (and I don't know if I've ever mentioned this, but) I haven't eaten a McDonald's "hamburger" since April 2001 at a McDonald's inside a Wal-Mart store in Renton, Washington (final resting place of a certain Mr. Jimi Hendrix--the town, not the McDonald's inside the Wal-Mart).  And even that was under duress.

Perhaps I should rectify both sometime soon?

Haven't seen the film yet, but it does seem interesting.

I'm replying to this thread, though, so I can point out that I haven't eaten a McDonald's "hamburger" since an April, 2001 visit to a McDonald's-inside-a-Wal-Mart location in Renton, Washington.

I'm very proud of myself for that.

(Although I have had a few miscellaneous breakfast sandwiches of theirs since then--damn the McGriddle. . .)

Have you made a Hot Toddy using your machine yet?

I'm a recovering alcoholic.

Does that answer your question?

Your ambiguous answer has made me jump to two possible conclusions:

#1 The Hot Toddy was a foul temptress who temporarily got the better of you
#2 Boone's Farm Strawberry  Hill was a foul temptress who never let you experience the delicious wonderfulness of the Hot Toddy.

I'm leaning towards #2...shall we put it to a vote?

I vote #2 as well... that post oozed regret from one too many visits to Strawberry Hill.   :-\   :'(

This thread isn't the only thing that reeks of #2.  You should smell my dirty laundry hamper after last weekend's bender.
