Being a resident oldie (though not the eldest) this email may not have made it to you youngsters. I find it entertaining, you may find it boring.
I Can't Believe We Made It!
According to today's regulators and bureaucrats, those of us who were kids in the 30's, 40's, 50's, 60's, 70's or even the early 80's, probably shouldn't have survived.
Our baby cribs were covered with bright colored lead-based paint.
We had no childproof lids or locks on medicine bottles, doors, or cabinets, and when we rode our bikes, we had no helmets.
Not to mention the risks we took hitchhiking.
As children, we would ride in cars with no seat belts or air bags.
Riding in the back of a pickup truck on a warm day was always a special treat.
We drank water from the garden hose and not from a bottle. Horrors!
We ate cupcakes, bread and butter, and drank soda pop with sugar in it, but we were never overweight because ! we were always outside playing.
We shared one soft drink with four friends, from one bottle, and no one actually died from this.
We would spend hours building our go-carts out of scraps and then rode down the hill, only to find out we forgot the brakes. After running into the bushes a few times, we learned to solve the problem.
We would leave home in the morning and play all day, as long as we were back when the street lights came on.
No one was able to reach us all day. No cell phones. Unthinkable!
We did not have Playstations, Nintendo 64, X-Boxes, no video games at all, no 99 channels on cable, video tape movies, surround sound, personal cell phones, personal computers, or Internet chat rooms.
We had friends! We went outside and found them.We played dodge ball, and sometimes, the ball would really hurt.
We fell out of trees, got cut and broke bones and teeth, and there were no lawsuits from these accidents. They were accidents. No one was to blame but us. Remember accidents?
We had fights and punched each other and got black and blue and learned to get over it.
We made up games with sticks and tennis balls and, although we were told it would happen, we did not put out any eyes.
We rode bikes or walked to a friend's home and knocked on the door, or rang the bell or just walked in and talked to them.
Little League had tryouts and not everyone made the team. Those who didn't had to learn to deal with disappointment.
Some students weren't as smart as others, so they failed a grade and were held back to repeat the same grade.Horrors!
Tests were not adjusted for any reason.Our actions were our own. Consequences were expected.
The idea of parents bailing us out if we got in trouble in school or broke a law was unheard of.
They actually sided with the school or the law. Imagine that!

It's funny because it's true. Are we pampering kids today or what? They should live to be 200.

Ah, yes. Oh how I loved the taste of the water straight outta the hose! Whether I was washing the car, watering the lawn, running the ol Slip'N'Slide... Nothing like hose water to quench your thirst on a warm sunny day. MMMmmm, good! Still enjoy putting some back nowadays, though I'm more than a little concerned healthwise when I do so. My how things change when we grow older! :'(

You hit the nail on the head there David. I'm 30 years old, and when I was a kid I was always playing with friends. Whether it was playing with Star Wars or GI Joe toys, playing "war" outside, or just playing sports, I was hardly ever just farting around or watching TV. I hardly watched TV when I was a kid, because I was always hanging out with friends.
Life back then was definitely a lot more fun than it would be today for kids. I hate seeing kids with cell phones, girls dressed like total sluts, and kids bossing their parents around. If I were to ever talk back to my parents I would get reprimanded immediately.
Things sure are different today than they were 20+ years ago.

Actually, No.
I do indeed own an N-64, but it was the star wars podrace version on clearance (birthday gift from the wife because it said star wars :)). It sits behind the bar and comes out twice a year when my nephew comes into town. We play perfect dark and drink beer together. We own a grand sum of five games. Super Mario, Mario Kart, Mario Golf, Perfect Dark and the game it came with.
I do indeed own a computer (D'oh) but the first was purchased for University, an old Mac. No home internet connection until about 3-4 years ago. You can indeed find me in the chat room here.
I have a cell phone. It is paid for by work and largely (i.e 95% plus) used for that only. Other use is to tell the boss (my wife) when I'll be home.
Yep to surround sound and a VCR. But I am 39. My family got their first VCR when I was 20. We got cable (mostly so I could watch basketball playoffs) when I hit grade 10, or about 15 years old. I believe we had a whopping 13 channels at the time, one of them French. We currently have 39 channels in our house. No digital receiver for the pay per view movies or the like. Actually, my television viewing is pretty restricted these days. Mostly I play with my daughter. Outside. :)
