Very cool news.  I guess there's wireless internet service in the room.  Gotta love realtime news like that.  The best part?  I don't know which figure to be more excited about!

Yeah I love the idea of all three of those, 2 of which have been on my top 20 ANH list forever

A Rebel transport eh? So we're talking the cart that ferried the pilots around? Way cool if that's the case. This could be one of those battle packs I buy multiples of, quite a rare thing...

Finally Red leaders R5!
Now if could only get Red Leader, and the skinny lil' bitch version that came with the TRU X-Wing.

It appears that Red Leader is part of the pack.  It looks like Curto left out a comma and that might be leading to some confusion.

Red Leader R5-K6, Rebel Ground Crew, Rebel Transport

Woot!

By transport you mean the Hangar shuttle??

If so, oh HELL'S yeah!

I'll get two of those sets for sure, then hope the Grounds Crew will either come back as a single card or in a mutipack of some kind!

Hasbro is no doubt handing out discs with the powerpoint presentation.  Thank Derryl Depriest for that, since he apparently wants good images of the presentation out there, and not bad photos of a slideshow.

The session probably only just wrapped up, and the reporters from the various sites are probably trying to upload them right now.  They'll probably be online within an hour.  Maybe less.

Well frackety frack frack!  I'm already going to be in line at TRU. (Yes, by  6pm and no later!)

Hmm, maybe I can pick up WiFi?? There is a Panera just down the road a few stores.

We're getting the cart, w00t!!

Seriously this might be the best Battlepack ever in my opinion. It brings hope for other small pieces like the Vehicle Maintenance Energizer, perhaps the Radar Cannon, all sorts of options. Awesome stuff for sure, I want at least 3 of them. :D

Just awesome!  I've been waiting for a Red Leader figure for a long time.  I never even considered that lame pack-in to be a figure at all.  And now we get Garven Dreis PLUS his astromech.  The Rebel Hangar tech and transport are pretty cool too.

Now let's get things going for Gold 5 to be the next Rebel pilot figure!  ;D

I've got two pretty decent custom sleds already, but now I can add to my Yavin scene with some great variety.  Wow.  This is maybe the most interesting battle pack I've seen them make...

And also, throw on a jacket onto that ground crew guy, and you effectively have a decent Rebel Fleet Trooper... at least good enough for my interests.

Don't get Hasbro the idea :-X. That is all we need for another sub par RFT. I don't want anything but a resculpt RFT in the way he should be.

If they want to single card that Tech with some tools and maybe a droid lift or anything else in the ANH hanger bay than cool, but no trying to fit that figure in anywhere he doesn't belong.

Regardless - well done Hasbro!

Those are in the Assault On The Shield Generator battle pack.  According to RS's notes from the presentation, that set may only include 1 of the Imperial Officers.

Great set. What would make it even better is a ladder for the x-wing and some more boxes like the ones that were suppost to come out as a accessory set years ago.

The return of the mini-rig?  Cool.

I thought the same thing!  I will pick one of these up...the current configuration of the table in my collection room is looking like a hangar with the Falcon, two X-wings and a B-wing...so it would be neat to have that stuff intermingled.

Oh HELLS Yes I'm getting this set!

Way to freakin' go Hasbro! You knocked it out of the park with this set! Man, I've been waiting for the Hangar crew member and Hangar shuttle cart for years! Now to get red leader and his very cool decoed R5 unit on top of it...Blows my mind. I'm getting two of this set for sure. Now here's hoping the Hangar Bay crew member is single carded later to army build, or much better, in a battle pack of 4-5 of them. I'd like 10 of those crew members. (I won't buy that many sets of this though.)

PLEASE Hasbro, soon after you release this set (like 6 months after), please rerelease the figures on card and the crew member in a battle pack.

heck, make it an Ultimate battle pack with a new rebel general not yet made (use the same mold from before but with a different head), Rebel honor guard, 3 rebel grounds crew, another cart, ladders to get up the x-wing and a new x-wing (that is to say a newly redecoed x-wing of a pilot who's x-wing has not yet been made). Oh and of course toss in THAT pilot to go with the set and his specific Astromech. That would make for an awesome scene, IMO.

I'm geniuinely excited about this new battle pack from Hasbro though. Again, sign me up for two of them!

I'm easily picking up at least 3 of these...  Hands down this is the best battlepack Hasbro ever made, and it's 100% geared towards collectors.  Well done to them...  All figures/pieces I've wanted to see done this way for years now.  If I'm lucky, I may get more even.  This is quality stuff.
Title: Re: Scramble on Yavin Battle Pack

This looks very well executed overall.  Great choice for the pilot, first of all.  And the accompanying astromech shows that some thought went into this.  The hanger tech looks solid, and even with this photo it looks pretty well articulated.  The hangar transport is easily one of the best battle pack accessories we've gotten.  I think it might even be a bit better than the Senate pod.

I like this set so much that I'd love to see a second version.  Maybe with a lineup like this:

-Y-Wing pilot with blue helmet markings
-astromech
-Commander Willard
-Hangar tech with directional wands
-Y-Wing ladder & X-Wing ladder

I'd take a figure or two out of that second BP idea and replace with a vehicle maintenance energizer (similar to the vintage version) which was an actual movie prop.

I suppose before you jumped down my throat, you didn't read my comment, "at least good enough for my interests."   ???

Regardless, great set.  Glad to be getting the sled.  It's amazing how many little custom sort of things like that people have made are finally getting produced by Hasbro.  Maybe we'll see the Echo Base sled later on down the road.

Oh I read it, but I stand by my WTH...they are not even close to the same, why wouldn't you want a new RFT instead?
Title: Re: TLC "Scramble on Yavin" Battle Pack
Post by: Jesse James on July 28, 2008, 02:18 PM
Yeah...  I gotta go with Scott on this one...  It's not even in the ballpark of accurate, so I'd not be content with just "throwing on a vest" to make a Rebel Fleet Trooper out of that figure.  Just because it has the helmet doesn't make it accurate...  Why not just throw the helmet on the Death Star Trooper then, ya know?  His shirt's closer.

I'd love to see the tech re-released on a card though to army build, but Fleet Troopers wear buttoned shirts, baggy pants with large pockets (cargo pants), boots w/the pants tucked into them, and technically the technician should have a helmet WITHOUT the neck guard extension.  All techs had the more rounded helmet that's more natural to the original piece it was created from (naval flak helmet made to cover earphones, etc.).  So technically the helmet may not be 100% on for the tech, but that I can live with if they get the re-used RFT helmet.

Add in the fact he needs a military style holster that hangs off his hip, the shirt has a collar, and folds over his right chest where it buttons, and all that stuff...  It's really not accurate to a RFT at all.

Hasbro just needs to get going with the RFT resculpt and done right.  It's an army builder, so why skimp?  Even the Yavin Guard seemed to do well at retail.
Title: Re: TLC "Scramble on Yavin" Battle Pack
Post by: CHEWIE on July 28, 2008, 02:29 PM
I think they're pretty similar designs... they both are in bland attire, are rebels of the same film, and have similar helmets.  Obviously different, but similar in many ways too.  Kind of like comparing X-Wing pilots to Snowspeeder pilots.

I didn't say that I wouldn't rather have a Rebel Fleet Trooper in the line though...  and we all know that one's coming anyway at some point.  This suits my needs for now, and is great variety for the Rebel ranks.

If you are saying that at proper Rebel Fleet Trooper should have been in this set instead, I'm afraid that I'd have to disagree.  Imagine if Hasbro were to include a proper Rebel Fleet Trooper in this set instead, and it was the only way it was available.  There would be many aggravated collectors, as they'd have to fork over $20 just to army build one at a time.

With this Battle Pack, you get a figure that works perfect for the sled that comes with it.  A proper Fleet Trooper in this set instead of the crewman would not jive.

I'm all for a new Rebel Fleet Trooper just a much as anyone else though.  It's at the top of my OT wishlist.  I think an Evolutions set might work out well for it, as long as it came with a couple other good army builders... but, a single carded figure would probably be the best way to bring it out I suppose.

We both want the figure to be made, no sense arguing that point.  And hopefully we'll get a pleasant surprise with a well done Rebel soon.

I agree.  They should have this be a running change, or have multiple versions come out at the same time like the Rebel Pilots 1 and 2 Evo sets.  I would like a couple of hangar techs and hangar shuttles, but would like some different pilots and droids instead of buying multiples of the exact same set.

Wow.  :o So this must be what it's like when Hasbro actually applies themselves to the battle pack format. I like it. :)

I will buy several of these. And yes, I will put a few vests on some of the ground crew guys. It's worth a try, and will work for me until we get a new RFT. (Or was this Hasbro's plan when they made this guy? :-X)

I didn't care about the helmet until Scott showed the comparison pics. Now I'm a little disappointed. Here's hoping for a last minute modification. Though, it is funny to see that the trooper helmet is just an enhanced tech helmet.

According to Adam May's Blog ovet at GH, the Rebel Ground Crew figure may be a prehash of Willrow Hood's body.

And we may not get this figure in the set after all if ICMG is in production at the same time. Seriously, what will they substitute with? A Rebel Honor Guard in grey? The POTJ Imperial Officer/ATST Driver mold? Neither is right, and now that I've seen it, I want this Ground Crew figure!

Way to plan, Hasbro!!
Title: Re: TLC "Scramble on Yavin" Battle Pack
Post by: jedipurge on July 29, 2008, 01:53 PM
Well there are definate deferences between the rft and the groundcrew, but as far as this figure goes it look like the rft minus the vest and correct pant/boots and H is just calling it the ground crew, why would ground crew need holsters anyway.
Title: Re: TLC "Scramble on Yavin" Battle Pack
Post by: Jesse James on July 29, 2008, 02:14 PM
And minus the right shirt...  Techs are wearing jumpsuits ala AT-ST Drivers, just a different color and over their boots...  Actually in ROTJ they wear their pants tucked in the boots for some reason, but that's neither here nor there.

The RFT has a shirt on, and separate baggy cargo pants with big pockets (seemingly loaded with gear).  The shirt has flap over the front and buttons up with a large collar very similar to Solo's shirts, but buttoned up.  I don't really find these uniforms a thing alike.  The helmet I think is throwing you guys off that say they're "similar".  They're not...  A jumpsuit is not cargo pants and one of those freaky Han Solo shirts, ya know?  It just isn't accurate.

The helmet in the picture may not have the neck extension.  I honestly can't tell...  It doesn't have the visor, or it doesn't have it painted.  That's "accurate" to a degree...  Most techs didn't have all the junk added to the helmet that RFT's did, except the squawk box on the left side.  They mostly (I think some may have had them) lacked visors and neck extensions/protection.  I'm not positive if they did or didn't have sidearms...  I'm not against that, as they're ultimately military as well, but I don't recall them having the holsters.  Some maybe did...  There is some "mixing" going on with gear and some techs did have visors on their helmets as I recall, but very few.

I hope we don't get screwed out of this figure for the set...  It's perfect looking to me as it is.  If they did a second set, like a variant, I'd much prefer getting either a repainted pilot (2 pilots essentially) in place of the Tech or getting a Yavin Honor Guard wearing a tan hat to make one of the lower ranking officers.
Title: Re: TLC "Scramble on Yavin" Battle Pack
Post by: CHEWIE on July 29, 2008, 02:26 PM
I don't think everyone is quite as concerned about every single detail of each character's appearance down to the length of their fingernails.  Just give us a good Rebel Fleet Trooper, on par with some of the better army builders as of late, and most collectors can finally put it to rest.

Hopefully this tech will still be included.  He looks like a nice addition to the set, and I would like to have a handful of them.
Title: Re: TLC "Scramble on Yavin" Battle Pack
Post by: jedipurge on July 29, 2008, 05:02 PM
Oh I hear you Jesse do it as accurate is you can H.  With the collar thing though I'm having a hard time seeing under his chin so for all I know it could have a collar or couldn't.  I mean I look at the AT-ST driver, TIE pilot, Imperial Officer, DSG, and I see jumpsuit I don't why when I look at this guy I'm see pant's and shirt kind of guy.

Oh we better be getting this guy, H better not tease us with this and snag him out.  I don't see what ICMG has to do with him.  I rather have this guy littering around in a hanger dio then the 1 lone ICMG that really I'd only buy as a novelty.

Did a quick custom on a EVO snowspeeder pilot, the 2nd set forgot what the guy's name is, and the legs from Vander fit pretty well in the hip joint.  I tried initially just to replace at the knee but it was too lose.  I removed the collar thing and had to scrap some glue off.  Thinking of scaping the ridges off on the bicep, though it doesn't really bother me.  TA DA non Hoth pilot.
I bring this up because it seems most people are thinking that Red leader is VOTC Luke with Red Leader head.  Just kinda wanted to bring up that might not be the case.

Just wait for it Jesse that Luke/Deana in stealth armor comic pack is coming out soon.  ;)
That is what I expect in a soldier, not someone in some cargo pants, a multipocket vest, and a bucket for helmet.  Not that it H's fault it's Lucas.
This guy will look good though prepping an xwing, still doesn't make sense why a mechanic needs to carry around a blaster.  Seems like carrying an umbrella when it's not raining, you're just not going to use it for anything.

Its a torque wrench  ;)

I think this would be a great opportunity for the various major retailers to do an exclusive.  The shown set (with the red R5) for Target, Walmart could have the Blue R3 we see in the background of ANH on the Death Star, and ToyRUs could some other droid (I'm not clear on what their main color is).  It wouldn't be a huge investment, just a couple repaints.  I'm sure a lot of collectors would pick up all three and the grandparent/parent demographic would still buy at atleast the same rate as this set would currently sell at.

Man that is a nice looking figure. I really hope the tooling is availible when this set is ready to hit production, it sure would be a shame if it isn't. I'm definitely going to have to pick up a couple of these battlepacks. I'd be down for a single carded rerelease at some point in the near future too. I could go for a dozen or so of these guys.

I don't mind the blaster/holster at all. It makes sense that everyone would be issued a sidearm. With the Rebels really being a guerrila force, I'd think they would want to have as many personel as possible ready to defend their bases if they were to suddenly come under attack. Hopefully these holsters will be easily removable, so it possible to vary up the troops easily. I'll probaby add some visors in the down position to some of these helmets as well.

Its a torque wrench  ;)

I'd definitely be down for something like that. I want to buy at least three anyways. This idea could easily be applied to other figures/battlepacks as well.

We need some GOOD Rebel soldiers now!

Well, not sure I'm totally into the Luke and Deena...  It's an EU design and all, and it's not bad, but I'm just not sold on it totally yet.  I've always rather liked the Alliance's uniforms...  They're not the Empire obviously, and full body armor maybe just isn't feasible for them...  They're putting together a cohesive uniform structure to represent them, but trying to do so at minimal cost too.  Plus while the Alliance is small compared to the Empire, they're probably massive by "Earth standards" so clothing that many soldiers would be complex.  I've always pictured them like our soldiers in the Revolution...  You'd have some ragtag looking groups, some militias that didn't "conform", but you'd have the bulk made up of the continental regulars trying to look as uniform as possible.

The pockets all make sense...  They're crews for ships as well as fighters, so they've got uniforms that work for both.  Their helmets provide protection to the face, the neck, etc.  Full body armor doesn't help the Empire too much either...  It probably serves some benefit, but the Alliance maybe just doesn't see it as "worth the cost", at least not yet.

I've always envisioned the "Techs" as something more than just grease monkeys too...  Mechanics in the U.S. Military still must pass basic small arms training to move onto their specialty.  The Alliance, while large itself, is dwarfed by their opponent so I'd imagine every "able body" is expected to fight if the need calls for it...

Here's another real world example of this though.  One of my best friends growing up, and someone I considered as close to me as a grandparent, was an old couple I delivered papers to and spent time with.  They've both passed away but Mr. Wright used to tell me stories about his time in the war.  He was an engineer in the U.S. military and didn't see much combat in Europe, but during the Battle of the Bulge in the Ardennes Forest, he and his men were in the midst of the fighting and the Engineers all had to fight with the regular infantry, airborne, etc.

He maybe built bridges, bases, airfields, etc., etc., but when the **** hit the fan he had to pick up an M1 with the rest of the men and fight.

I consider the Rebel Technicians as something similar...  They're doing the laborous work to build the bases and things, but if (when, if you follow the EU) the Empire lays siege to the base, the base's personnel must all defend it.  They're basically all soldiers to me, just some are specialists that work on ships, or fix fighters, etc.

I think a post-ROTJ Rebellion maybe has more stability to up-armor their troops, but really armor seems like a luxury in Star Wars.  Even the Empire uses it on Stormtroopers only while other troops seemingly either get no armor, or very minimal (EU says chest plates like Veers wears are standard issue field gear for "Imperial Army Regulars", and one could maybe guess others get the same armor issued, but nobody wears the full set but a STormtrooper, who is ultimately "elite" on some level).

I understand what you're saying Jesse but I've always remembered the line between Motti and the other Moff "they're more powerful then you realize" or something to that effect.  I just look at the EU, and while I don't like most of it, I can't imagine in a galaxy that advanced that body armor isn't normal/readily available/neccesary there.  It's practically the wild west where most beings carry a weapon wide open.  I think how mass produced things are here, and we see in the driod factory in AOTC how mass production is available/fast.

I think as far as how Lucas did the movie is that he wanted to give the good guys faces so we could see their humanity as it were, while the Stormies are faceless and most people when the movie first came out probably weren't even sure if they were droids or human/alien, so who'd care if those guys die.

As far as the techs go okaywhat you said sounds reasonable, but did you friend wear his weapon at ALL times?  andeven if he did I'd think he'd only be carrying around a pistol like the one General Lando/Academy Biggs comes with and not a full on carbine.  Can't imagine this guy crawling inside of an Xwing with a carbine blaster at his side, how much would that get in the way.  It kind of reminds me when the DS is being attcked and we see the inside with all the Stormies running around w/blasters at the ready, and I think what are they gonna do with their blasters shoot at the Xwing from a window as they pass by.  They have no need to be running around a battlestation weapons drawn, and these guys have no need for a carbine blaster at their side.

Obviously I'm talking about the "character" and not the toy really cause I know it'd be boring if he came with a bunch of tools and most people would probably rather him be able to shoot something then fix something.

I'm sure Stiles will be getting a check from H anyday now for using his likeness, I mean really we can't get Luke to look anything like Hamil or Leia to look anything like Carrie but jeez they sure did a bang up job of of making this nobody look completly like someone that wasn't even remotely in the movie.

Mass production is available in Star Wars IF you have it or IF you can afford it...  That's the key.  The Droid Factory is available to Geonosis because that's what Geonosians do.  That's their claim to fame, and why Battledroids look like them.  Could Muunilist crank out Battledroids like that though?  Probably not...  They're not known for that, but they can buy them because they're home to the Banking Clan.

But could Alderaan do either?  They could probably pick up a decent sized army for defense, and they maybe have some manufacturing, but they could never rival either.

I'm sure mass production is available, but the Alliance would have to pay for it...  And being in the place they are, they'd probably have to pay a premium as the people producing anything for them probably don't do so cheaply since it's a risk to themselves for supplying them.  According to EU the Alliance has safe worlds outside the frontier to grow food, make equipment, etc., but they're also struggling to keep their military going so I'm sure they don't like dedicating too many people to these safe worlds.  Perhaps families, pacifists who want to rebel but don't want to fight, etc., but anyone able to fight is probably expected to be on a ship, a base, or in the field somewhere.

The Empire has the money to mass produce anything it wants, when it wants.  The Alliance though, they just don't seem to have that ability.  Look at their fighters.  The Y-Wing is stripped down CLone Wars era gear...  X-Wings and A-Wings and such all have replaced armor panels, and all have visible wear/tear to them.  They're all mass produced, but there's obvious signs that the Alliance doesn't get new stuff often...

Perhaps Alliance soldiers in the field can/do get chest armor like the Imperial troopers?  We don't really see them but on Hoth, and Hoth's necessary gear kind of make armor impractical unless it's very specifically designed to work with the puffier outfits and things.

As far as the blaster goes though, I never considered the Rebel gun to be a carbine...  It's described as a DH-17 blaster pistol or sidearm.  The Imperial's E-11 is described as a carbine though it's not much bulkier.  Probably though it's described as that due to the folding stock or something.  The DH-17 is just a sidearm though, and my friend in World War 2 did carry a .45 as his sidearm, so it's possible he did have it on most of the time, especially any time they were building anything near the front I'd imagine.

Do Engineers carry the big "Hoth" type rifle, or do Techs lug something like that around?  They're maybe issued them in an emergency, but otherwise probably not.  Carrying a sidearm in a holster though, isn't awkward to me.  Slinging a rifle over your back and working at your specialty though is odd unless it's something you're doing under fire in a combat zone.

I'm trying to recall if any Yavin techs had a pistol/holster on even in the movie.  I don't think any did, and if they did it wasn't very many of them.

Your friend carried around a .45 which would probably be about the size of the G.Lando/A. Biggs blaster, but the DH-17 would be like carrying aound an Uzi or somesuch on your side.  Also though as far as the OT goes the rebel ground troops all we see are really in dress uniform-Honor Guard, this Tech here, guys playing in the snow, the fleet trooper-which really these guys don't seem to be more then the techs just guys manning the ship they're not the equivalent of guys storming Normandy or anything there the guys firing the canons and launching the boats at Normandy, we also see the Endor Commando-which these guys are just traveling light/camoed in a different enviro these guys might be wearing armor.  I suppose my long drawn out point is we really don't see the hard core soldier of the Alliance.  I alos think about the Mando's heck if these guys can have armor why not Rebels

Side note Jesse I think it's really cool to have a friend that was in the war, I'd have loved to hear the stories.  My grandfather was in the Pacific but by the time I'd have been old enough to be interested to hear his stories he'd already been dead several years.  Consider yourself lucky to have had that friend.

I'm totally lucky to have had the Wrights live within walking distance of my house...  I didn't have a grandfather as both mine had passed before I was born, but Mr. Wright was always like one for me.  A very good person, as was his wife.

About the Rebels...  A lot of it depends on your POV and what you accept of EU.

Eu's established that the "Fleet Trooper" look is the basic military uniform for the ALliance, but I can see the Alliance having special gear for soldiers in the field rather than "Fleet Troopers" working aboard starships like the Tantive IV.  Personally, and there's nothing backing this up but my own opinion, I imagined the "Fleet Trooper" look in the field, but wearing ponchos like Luke/Leia as an inexpensive form of camoflauge...  perhaps officers and non-coms wear trench coats to differentiate themselves (SS's 12" Endor Troopers sorta suggested this, and it jives with Han being the head of the Endor team and all).

Throw on some of the Hoth-type backpacks, rifles, grenade bandoleirs, etc.  Maybe some have some field armor pieces or whatever.  That's the field soldier for the Alliance to me then.  And then sprinkle in any of the myriad of militias, alien militaries and whatnot that are also part of the Alliance but aren't conformed or absorbed into the regular military.

About the blasters and "size" and stuff, I think SW weapons are simply generally a larger variety.  Look at Han's DL-44.  It's not small by any means as a Mauser isn't a tiny pistol, but it's still a pistol.  The DH-17 isn't really that large.  Looking at the film it's easily held with two hands at the grip.  I know what you're saying though that it's not a very "good" thing for a mechanic to have on his hip and I agree, but I think Hasbro did this to pep up the figure a bit too...  I don't really think any techs had pistols in ANH or ROTJ that I noticed.  I think it's ok and they're still soldiers and expected to fight if needs be, but I think it was Hasbro's creative license.

I'm sticking with EU on Reb uniforms though, and some of my own creative license on what they sport in the field.  I get what you mean about it not maybe looking advanced enough though, but it works for me.  The helmets RFT's also sport the neck guard and visor, which again indicates gear for battle to me, with techies getting shafted on either it seems.

Ya I know it's probably just H trying to spice up an otherwise boring figure, but when we look at AT-AT driver, AT-ST driver, most of the pilots don't have a holster, even though they come with a gun I don't understand H's reasoning for giving this guy one and he's not even in the heat of battle like the above mentioned are even though they're in a ship.

As far as the soldiers go maybe they wouldn't need to be in full storm/clone trooper armor, but I would think in an technologically advanced society they at least look like our modern day U.S. soldier and not looking like some that going to go hunting for deer.

And as far as the Wrights go it's even better that they were neighbors to you, extra lucky.  My boss, my wife's uncles girlfriend-explains how I got this job, is French and her father fought in the underground there and was eventually captured and put in a camp, luckily he survived and is still alive today and just celebrated his 90th B-day.  She's told me a couple of his stories but she says he doesn't talk about it much, as I can imagine.  But she remembers as a kid going along the French country side and finding old buried food rations from plane drops.  So I suppose I can still get my WWII fix.  :P

When JD asked Hasbro in the Q&A (http://www.jedidefender.com/newspro/fullnews.cgi?newsid1219026942,61109,), Hasbro said...

"He'll be a unique figure due to his somewhat 'generously' proportioned physique."

So, unless something has changed between then and now, Willrow should have a unique sculpt.

"generously proportioned"

Why don't they just come out and say FAT. We all know that's what they mean. Hell, I'm fat and I know it. Can't hide it so why try. He's a fat man, so what. So was Porkins.

generously proportioned indeed...

I don't think Hasbro would sculpt a large "package" on a figure, even if it was warranted...

Excellent battlepack, the transport resembles the mini-rigs era, itīs like a PDT-8
I hope next year they make a battle pack of hoth technicians, with a sledge from echo base,
This battlepcak could be named "Scramble on Hoth", or "Hoth Rebel Hangar".
Title: Re: TLC "Scramble on Yavin" Battle Pack
Post by: EpicGon on October 15, 2008, 01:08 PM
Now I have remembered which is that transport from Hoth. Itīs the vehicle we saw in wotc minis from TFU expansion set, "Rebel troop cart".

This vehicle should arrive on shelves, with a pilot and seats for 4 action figures, or it must be the vehicle for a battle pack called "Hoth Rebel Hangar".

Yeah, if this one does well (can't see how it won't) we could probably expect an Echo base version with the troop transport.  That would be a great time to get Echo base troopers with the brown vest, baseball caps and black boots.

I want more than one of the cart and driver, but I don't need more than one of the droid and pilot... at $22.99 plus tax, there's no way I'm buying multiples unless they put out a second version someday that is just two carts - which isn't going to happen.

I feel the same way.  I'd want a couple of the cart, but as much I love the droid and have been waiting for him forever, I only need one.  Maybe they'll do another set with a different droid/pilot later on.

That would be a great idea... running changes on the pilot and droids. Hasbro could already repack it with Lepira/droid, Luke/R2, Biggs/droid, Dutch/droid, and give us new pilots as well. I believe there were a couple droids in the droid 5-packs a few years back that were from the Battle of Yavin.

If I decide to go for a squad of nine of the Rebel Techs I'll be able to to use two of the Pilots and two of the Droids, no sweat, leaving me with seven extra of each. I probably wouldn't keep all of the sleds either. However, I'm confident I could find homes for all my extras though.

I want 6 Rebel Techs, 2 carts, 2 pilots, and 1 droid. I don't want to buy five sets and get stuck with tons of extras, so I'm hoping to buy/trade for other people's extras to get most of the stuff I want from this set. If anyone is buying multiple sets and ends up with extras, please let me know and we can work something out. :)

Really, really looking forward to this set! ;D

I'm maybe interested in some of the stuff, but ultimately I'm buying lots of sets too, so I dunno if I'd want to buy it for much.  I just know this thing's gonna be a bear to track down.  I'm hoping a carded release of the Yavin tech happens...  I'm thinking I'd maybe buy the sleds if I saw them for a decent price...  not so sure on the pilot.  He's a pretty sharp and generic X-Winger though, which is nice to finally see.  Good fodder...  best fodder actually.

I'll be buying 5 sets of these. From those sets I'll only need 2 of the carts, the 5 rebel troopers, 1 of the pilots and 1 of the droids.

So I'll have for trade/sale:
3 carts
4 pilots
4 droids

Perfect opportunity for any of you who want just pilots and/or droids.
Likewise those who just want an extra cart or 2 or 3.

Trades are figure for figure. I'm not sure what I'd take in trade for the cart yet.

Prices will be determined by what I pay for the sets.
If $25 sets then each figure will cost $6.50 +shipping and the cart would be $7.50 plus shipping. Combined shipping of course applies (to save you money).
If $20 sets then each figure will cost $5 +shipping and the cart would be $6 plus shipping. Combined shipping of course applies (to save you money).

(Prices reflect tax I'd have to pay on these as well-so you are still getting them at cost.)

I'll take trades first over straight selling them. Please PM me if interested in either trading or buying.

-Sal

Okay so I need to post this list of people interested in what extras I will have.

For those on the list, please let me know if you are still interested in any/all of the parts you requested of me earlier. No worries if not, I'm just trying to organize this.
If there are any other extras still available after this list, anyone please feel free to shoot me a PM or post here and I'll update the list accordingly.

Forum member/Extras interested in:
kenobi / 1 droid, 1 pilot (or more?)
Rob / carts (how many Rob, I have 3 available)
Mickey D / 1 droid
ctrona / (I'm not sure what you wanted specifically, so please let me know based on what has already been listed above)
Happy Noodleboy / 1 pilot
Hobbie / 1 droid

So based on what I've got listed here I will still have the following available:
1 droid
2 pilots
2 carts (unless Rob wants them all)

Repeating the costs for these:
Prices will be determined by what I pay for the sets.
If $25 sets then each figure will cost $6.50 +shipping and the cart would be $7.50 plus shipping. Combined shipping of course applies (to save you money).

Yeah I have to agree with Jayson/Rob.  I liked that swoop, but at the end of the day that was the ONLY reason to buy that set.  Every figure from that set currently resides in my fodder box unfortunately.  :-\  And they've been there since I bought it even, since all those figures I already had.

The Yavin set is far superior...  new sled, new figure, and a kitbashed figure with a much-demanded repainted droid...  If Red Leader is short like Luke, I'm a little disappointed in that, but beyond that this is a pretty decent set.  The best Hasbro's done in ages.
Title: Re: TLC "Scramble on Yavin" Battle Pack
Post by: Hobbie on April 2, 2009, 05:16 PM
Sal, could you up me to 2 droids?  My research has found that besides being in Red Leader's X-Wing, this R5 unit was also onboard a Y-Wing in the hangar on Yavin, and is actually spotted on the first Death Star as well.  R5-K6 could have just really got around, but I'm going with there were more than just one R5 unit painted with this scheme.

Also, I am looking for cheap shipping - bubble wrap and padded envelop or something regular mail.  I'm in Phoenix so maybe you could give me a rough estimate on that end?

Thanks!

I think I have to back out Sal if it's not too much trouble, offer those carts up to everyone else first.  I'd like to end up with more than one, but I want the crew member more, so I'll probably end up with more than one anyway.

Thanks though.

But did it have the lightsaber hilt?  That's one thing about the photos of this set that really drove me crazy.

***  Edit

Checked out the pics, and yes, it's the Luke body.  But there's a bit of an issue there.  That being that the larger bodied X-Wing pilots have a very difficult time getting into the modern X-Wing cockpit.  Now I've never tried getting the new Biggs into the newer X-Wing, but I know that it's a fairly snug fit for the VTSC pilot Luke.

Low and behold, I found one this morning at Target. Yeah, pretty disappointed in the Luke Body. I was planing to cannibalize the extra bodies I'll have to make the pilots I made utilizing extra Luke bodies taller. Now I'll have to get some extra Squidhead pilots.  :P

Case break down is kind of crappy too:

1 x Yavin
1 x AT-TE Squad
2 x Jabba

And I can confirm that there is no light saber.

Luke?  Greeeeaaattt...  ::)

I'll customize one as well, to make a taller pilot, but this is disappointing considering better sculpts could have been used.  Red Leader was quite clearly taller than Luke, so this is a crummy corner cut, but in theory an easy enough custom to fix too.

Since it seemed like the parts swap is compatible, I took the liberty to swap parts with Vakil. As suspected by others, the neck joint on Vakil is a tad larger, but Garven's head does fit, albeit snugly. The hand swap is easy-peasy. The Vakil head on the Garven/Luke body is loose, but shoving tissue up there will fix it right up.

Great pic Jayson.  I'm really looking forward to this one as well, and hope that I'm able to grab a couple.  I agree with Jesse, the Battle Packs seem to go pretty quickly around here anymore as well.  I think I've seen the Falcon Training one more than others, but ones like the Endor one you mentioned did go pretty quickly locally as well.  I checked our closest Target yesterday for the Yavin/Jabba ones, but there weren't any on the shelves at all (and the grey sticker was present as well).

I picked one of these up today. The tech, sled, and the droid are fantastic. I'm really bummed that the pilot ended up on the Luke body and not the new comic pack version. He is too short, the joints on the Luke version are too square, and his neck isn't even painted. It's not a really bad figure or anything, but it is disappointing after the initial pictures we saw. And I don't want to army build the pilot at all because it is on the Luke body.

I think I'll still have to pick up a few more sets anyways for the tech and the sled. I might have to do the same as Jayson and pick one up for TIE Pilots and maybe give it an Imperial grey paint job. Overall this is probably the best battlepack that Hasbro has put out to date.

I've got something of an idea to use the pilots...  I'm aiming for some "youthful" guys as customs.  In the EU many pilots are young (16 to 18), and so they may have that shorter stature going.  The new ST figure's heads are all pretty youthful, so I figure they may combine.

I bought the last EU Rebel Pilots pack at WM last night, specifically to make a tall Red Leader figure...  I'll work with whatever I wind up with extra then, to make some shorter Luke-ish Rebel Pilots then.  I'm thinking though, that those ST heads will work nicely since they're all very young looking.

Hasbro should do us all a favor and offer up an 8 pack of Yavin techs.  Wait until they battlepacks are all sold out or whatever, but I want at least 12 of these, I don't need 12 carts, and I definitely don't need 12 pilots or droids.

Saga Legends... deluxe with the cart only... mail-away... 8-pack, whatever.  Just please make these available in some other affordable format.

And the Evolutions TIE Pilot too while you're at it.

That gives me a boner for what kind of work they could do with an honest to goodness, GOOD quality Rebel Fleet Trooper...  That's one nice looking action figure on its own, and the Yavin Rebels are always going to be my favorites.  I must have many of this figure.

Looks like I'll be making a lot of "young" recruit pilots and R5 repaints.  :-\  The sleds rock too, so no problem on those being in some bulk.  They look like a pretty common piece of SW tech...  I could see them transporting slabs of carbonite, pilots, cargo...  Hell, ferrying men to the front in combat.  A camo deco perhaps...

I wonder which other heads will make natural swaps?  Tycho's perhaps?  I've found his, the Yavin Ceremonial Guard, and the McQuarrie Rebel all had interchangeable heads.  There's a number of figures like that.  Actually I put Keyan Farlander's head onto a Snowspeeder Pilot body and it fit perfectly, making a Snowspeeder Keyan (he was supposedly at the battle of Hoth IIRC).

Tycho's head does fit on the crewman neck post. It's a little snug, but it snaps on there.

That's a good one that I have a number of...  That means the Rebel Honor Guard's head should also fit, and even has the rockin' sideburns.

It does. So does the human B-Wing Pilot's.

Man I here you about an 8-pack. I'd still buy 2-3 of the battle pack, but then 8 more of just the techs would fill my need just fine.

The cart is cool, and you do need a ton of Techs, but I need at least 4 of the R5's:  One for Red Leader's X-Wing, one for the Y-Wing it was in in the hangar, one for the bts shot of it on the Death Star, and one for my Darth Maul, cuz what other astro is he gonna use?  :D

I just opened my set over lunch and I have to say that my initial giddiness was well founded.  I hope this thing shelf warms like hell becuase I might every single one I see.  By far the coolest item of the year IMO.  The detail on the cart is exquisite.  Here's to hoping the Asian backdoor sellers can get a pile of the Hanger Techs ;)

The only downer as many have already mentioned is the Red Leader using Luke's body.  It is an easy switch to the bigger body though so no big whoop

I picked up two more sets and am going to get rid of everything except the Rebel Techs. I'm going to wait to see if I can pick up any more sets before formally offer them so I don't have to offer everything piece-meal.

Found this at Target today. This is ******* the best battle pack ever released by a trillion miles. The only negative is the Red Leader because of the damn Luke body, but as a filler item it's okay. The astro droid's paint scheme is awesome. I'm glad they keep repainting the **** out of that R5 mold since it really is a nice figure. And now for the stars of this set; the tech and the sled are probably the best Rebel category items Hasbro's made (that's right - the tech easily beats the new Hoth Trooper). Like Jesse said, the tech really makes me excited about what they can do with a new RFT. :)

I'll probably buy one more of this set if I see it again and keep the tech and sled. So if anyone wants just the astro droid and/or Red Leader, LMK and we can work something out.

Pretty much echoing what others have already said.  I found this pack at Target over the weekend, and it really is nice.  Like Scott said, the detail on the cart itself is really well done.  The smaller body for Red Leader is a little disappointing, but really the only drawback of the set in general.  I really like the R5-K6 figure, and the ground crewman is a nice figure as well.  I hope I'm able to pick up a few more of these as well.  Like others have said, one of the best sets Hasbro has released - I hope it keeps shipping for awhile now.

I found this today.  This is hands down the best OT BP that they've done.  I would have been stoked for the droid alone, but the Yavin Tech and the sled are great additions to the line.  They should reissue this with a different droid and pilot, and sell even more.

Just picked this set up this evening at Target ($22.99 pre-tax. $25.30 after tax) and even though the Battle Packs have gone up in cost, this set prices out just nicely. 3 figures + a mini rig at today's prices bought individually would have been at least $34+ pre-tax,  so the cost is just right. As is the set, it's the best Battle Pack ever in my opinion, the details on all the figures are high quality (sans Red Leader's short stature) especially the paint job on the R5, that's actually quite outstanding. And the Ryan Stiles figure looks to be a great base for future figures such as AT-ST Drivers, Imperial Techs, perhaps Rebel Fleet Troopers (JJ, being the RFT guru can they just slap on a new torso and call it a day here?). And the mini-rig cart is a fun toy, it doesn't look like much but its a well done piece. The only thing I'm left scratching my head about is the control handle on the cart. The packaging shows that its a longer piece and after checking Yakface's photoshoot of the set it appears they did shorten up the handle. I thought perhaps there was an add-on piece to extend it but no such piece found in the box. Did I miss it or was this just cut out? It does make the tech's positioning a bit off but nothing too horrible. I'm looking forward to picking up another of these sets down the road.

(JJ, being the RFT guru can they just slap on a new torso and call it a day here?)

No, not by a longshot...

The Techies are wearing basically a jumpsuit with small pockets...  Rebel Fleet Troopers are wearing heavy cargo/military pants with large pockets for carrying ammo/grenades/etc.  Fleet Troopers have pants tucked into boots as well, and they're in just a generally larger/baggier pant than what the techies are wearing (you don't want too baggy if you're crawling under things or into crawl spaces to work on stuff).  Also the techies have pockets on the lower leg, whereas the RFT's pockets are just hand pockets at the top, and then the large pocket on the side of each pantleg.  It's actually very different looking if you compare the two.

There WERE techs in pants with separate shirts...  Or there was one anyway.  He's the tech officer who was in communication with the pilots.  His uniform is completely different from a standard tech though.

So no, no vest swap and stuff...  It's not in the ballpark of accurate.

Ok - so I got my first opener yesterday and I opened it up this morning. What the HECK happened to the handle on the sled?!?!?!

At first I thought mine was broken so I went an looked at my MIB set and that one too has a short handle. If you look at the back of the box, the handle is supposed to be nice and long so the tech doesn't have to have his arm ridiculously bent back to "drive" the cart.

Is there a hidden piece somewhere that I didn't find? Or did Hasbro change the part post product photography?
Title: Re: TLC "Scramble on Yavin" Battle Pack

Is there a hidden piece somewhere that I didn't find? Or did Hasbro change the part post product photography?

No hidden part, it did not past safety or the drop test. The model on the back is a frail paint master/sales sample just for photography which is done months before actual production begins. So that is never a real gauge of the toy. (Hence the actual product my vary jive). Packaging is done before the product is made, all of those cardboard boxes need to be printed, shipped and waiting at the factories before the production so the product is ready to be boxed during manufacturing. As the toy gets to the end of development they go evaluations especially before tooling begins, then they go through rigorious testing and changes to assure quality/safety is made every step of the way. Little changes like the handle happen all the time. If that fell from a high place or was stepped on it would easily break. Shortening it made it more durable & compact making it stronger which would pass the QA test. To mold it in a softer PVC plastic would be too expensive so they had to keep the molding in ABS plastic which tends to be more brittle but less expensive. Thus the change/compromise of shortening the handle happens in order to keep the age grading it is. Those age grades on a box are there for a reason and to fit in a certain age grade there is a level of criteria that must be met per age grade. The lower you go the more intense.

After 9 years of Toy Design I been through it a thousand times. There are reasons to the little details that some question as to why didn't they do that. It all comes down to cost/safety and most times not the desire to lose accuracy. (Sometimes there are lazy ass designers that take shortcuts because it's easier to do so, you just got to know what to look for to spot this.)

I do think the Yavin set is more of a draw, but more so than that is the fact there are two Jabbas and only one Yavin per box (and one ATTE Squad).

I saw another one of these at Target this weekend, so I picked it up.  There were two Jabba sets on the shelf there as well.  Of these packs, it seemed like the AT-TE squad was the first to sell around here, followed by the Yavin pack.  It does seem like the battle packs sell pretty well in general around here though, I rarely see them sitting for too terribly long.

Pitt's always in the back of the pack for getting stuff...  It's just that this stuff is A) cool, and B) happening when SW is getting scaled back for SUmmer movie toylines, so there's just a ****** drought going on here right now.

It doesn't help too that we haven't really been deluged with ANYTHING of the Legacy line...  I'd say besides Wave 1, we didn't really ever get a huge glut of anything.  Of course that leaves us with Yarna's out the ying yang.  Even Wave 5 though is picked over here, and not 100% littering the pegs.  That's the Legends line's job.

Actually most of the "chicks" out here are pretty hot.  Not too many heffers believe it or not.  I think Steve was just talking about our migration though I'm not sure how it works in his part of town.  Me and a buddy of mine bought out the 25-35 Yarnas and Organas from one Target and then returned them to stores that are less travelled (at least in our group)  Since then this Target has been stocking 2-3 cases each of Legacy and CW stuff per week as opposed to being just bogged down with crap all the time.  Give it a whirl.

I finally got one set tonight...  It's outstanding.  It's worth every red cent.  It's maybe Hasbro's best work in a single item IMO.

I'm definitely down for a handful of these sets, if I can find them.  I'd like 4 or 5 if I can manage it.  Love the sled.  It's an outstandingly well sculpted and put together piece itself.  The figures are good, but Red Leader is pure shite because of the body used.  Valid reasoning for that from Hasbro, and I think I can find the figure useful now, but the shortness just really does suck.

What really sucks is that it's taken this long to get a normal height, SA X-Wing pilot...  And that it wasn't widely available to use for pilots, when they come up.  That's kind of crappy unto itself when you think about it.

I agree, but I'm under the impression that the normal height body will be used from here on out. Wedge, will use it, Corran will use it and Red 4 (the EVO pilot) will use it.

Post by: Jesse James on May 10, 2009, 05:21 PM
It seems that way...  at least I hope so Anton.  Though now I look back and Biggs is using a larger body, Red Leader's using a smaller one...  Some of the more important (yet secondary) rebel pilots probably aren't likely to get that new sculpt right away.  That's a little bummer.  I can deal with Gold Leader as he is, but it'd be nice to get Biggs redone with the new sculpt only because he wasn't tall particularly, and an articulated figure of him would be nice.

Still, lots of pilots to be done.  I really wish we'd get a simple, generic, powder blue emblem, clean helmet, "young", black lensed pilot at some point.  They were the most common in the hangar and we've yet to get one.

Then it would be neat to get Dak for a sorta Snowspeeder version of the same character, more or less.

I was looking at some Yavin reference pictures today and it looks like there may have been multiple droids that had the same paint job as Red Leader's astromech. There is one in the Yavin briefing (which very well could have been his) but there's also one in a Y-Wing.

I guess I don't mind if I get stuck with a few extra droids. A few extras wouldn't look bad in a Yavin diorama.

I'm a big "I can bull**** anything" fan, as far as droids go.  Droids are like cars...  How many aqua 1996-ish Chevy Cavaliers have you seen in your life?  And that's on one friggin' planet.  You know damn well there's paintjobs on droids that are all over the place.  That R5 might be the pimp droid everyone wanted because of the nifty paintjob, and thus many exist.  Anything is possible.

Is that the first instance in history where a 1996 Aqua Chevy Cavalier was equated with being "Pimp"?   :o

I do agree with Jesse, that the names of droids simply indicate their model, of which there are thousands or millions of individual examples.  Maybe that is an idea for Seth Green and the guys at Robot Chicken, to have Luke call R2 and have 5 or 6 respond to his call.

If you want to EU the idea, you can assume the Rebels stole a shipment of a couple dozen identical R5s and distributed them as needed, this one to a Y-Wing, that one to an X-Wing, that one to a tactical officer, etc.

I finally saw another of these packs today.  I was tempted, but eventually passed on picking up another.  I really like the set overall, but I didn't see the value in getting another of the R5 and Red Leader.  And I've never been one to cherry pick parts of a battle pack and then sell off the figures I didn't want.

I finally got one today and it's great!  The cart is awesome, the Tech figure is cool, the Droid's cool and the Pilot's not so bad....although he does kinda look like Bob's Big Boy.   :D

Now that I have my fill, these aren't too hard to find around here.

Lucky you Ant. I'm STILL needing this set. Plus the multiples I want for the tech and a cart. I've got no less than 6 deals for my extras, but can't fulfill them yet because I can't find the set at all.

I think Hasbro seriously underestimated the desire for this battle pack. I really hope there is a revision to the case assortment and they short pack the other one in favor of 2 Yavin sets.

FINALLY found one of these today at Wal-Mart (I believe others have found these at non-Target locations already nut this was the first I've heard of seen showing up elsewhere). Looks like they had gotten in one single case since there was 1 Yavin BP and 2 Jabbas. Haven't gotten to open it but just staring at it I can tell the only negative is Red Leader being short... but is it really that big a deal? Once the larger body becomes more circulated I'll just do a simple head swap.

Definitely would be interested in more Techs and another cart or two, which is enough to warrant getting a second set when I see it.

So are these sets still shipping? I've only seen one (which I snagged), and this was almost 3 months ago. I'd love to get at least one more but nobody seems to be stocking new Battle Packs. With Hasbro basically giving the heave ho to basically everything in white/blue packaging I'm wondering if I'll ever even see this great set again.

Last I saw there were a few sitting near me. I'd have picked them up but money has been very tight lately.

I still see them around at Targets now and again.  BPs haven't sold very well at certain Targets near me, but I doubt that has anything to do with them being priced at $26.50   ::)

Haven't seen this pack (or the CW Jabba, for that matter) in a long time.  Our local Target keeps stocking the Falcon Training Pack, the Dagobah/Jedi vs Sidious repacks, and every once in awhile the Endor pack (saw that one yesterday again).  The Bo'Maar Monastery pack can still be found once in awhile too.

The last three of these that I've seen at retail had the Tech swapped out for crap.  Brainiac was the latest one that I saw yesterday.

Yeah, I see the same thing on my end of town.  The $23.99 Targets are all sold out, yet the $26.39 Targets all seem to have plenty.   :P

I passed on ONE of these sets that I saw.  I've got 4 I think...  so basically I've seen only 5 total, anywhere.

THis is the kind of stuff that makes Hasbro's, "these aren't important enough to pack more to a case", frustrating.   :-\

If anyone wants to glance over my trade list and needs lots of clones, I'd trade well for this.  One or two would be awesome ;)

This looks like a great set. I hope I can find one out there; I only just heard about it. It's been out for what, 3 or 4 months? I'd love to add this and the new ladders to my set-up with Luke and his X-Wing.

I'm SO disappointed with the distribution of this set.

I only ever saw ONE in my area. I got it, but I have planned on 5-6 sets with deals with several fellows here for extras.

I feel like I've let those guys down. Trust me, it wasn't for lack of searching for these either.

I just hope the Rebel Technician is carded on Legends card later this year or next. I know I want to army build that one.

Ok with trades and the one I got before we moved, I am now at 2... I am 10 shy of my goal.

Wow, distribution on this set was actually good in Chicago land. I came across it more times than I can count. It does sell well, but if I come across it again I can pick it up for you Sal, just LMK.

No that's fine. I'd only need the Rebel Technician at this point, and I don't want to pay $25+ for just that figure.

I hope he comes back out carded.

No worries, I hear ya, I have 4 Tech and I am content with that. I would like a few more but I will wait for a rerelease too.

I would take you up on that. I don't have one yet.

Found one today.

Has anyone found one of these lately? I actually didn't fare to bad on this one and found a decent amount. Though I was hoping to grab a couple more for the crew member (shocker).

I'm not overly worried though as he's got to be a shoe in for a future Fans' Choice Legends release. I still have a few carts around if anyone needs btw.
