Title: The Big Vehicles - Did You Buy Them?
Post by: Brian on July 28, 2008, 09:45 AM
We know that Hasbro is paying fairly close attention to how the Falcon and AT-TE sell, so I was curious how many in our community picked one or both of them up.  Did you buy one, both, or multiples?  Do you intend to get either later on?  It will be interesting to see how these big vehicles do.

Personally, I picked up the Falcon at Wal-Mart this weekend.  I would have liked to get the AT-TE, but just can't afford both right now.  I may try to get an AT-TE later on if possible, although I have to figure out the display/space issue before I do that.  I noticed at the stores though, that the AT-TE is packaged smaller than I would have thought, and should be able to stay on the shelves in the regular action figure aisle regularly the way things are set up.  Anyways, did you pick up either of the big vehicles?

Yes, I picked up both. It's not like we're getting a big expensive item like this every so often, so it's not going to price me out of the hobby. One a year, a big item I can handle.

I bought both.  I am happy with that decision.  :)

I want them, but I don't have a place for them at the moment.  Given the cost of initial production, I'm assuming that both of these will be available later on.  Maybe once I've moved into a bigger place and have separate room for the toys.

I definitely intend to get them eventually.

I picked the BMF at Wal-mart and the rest of the vehicles at TRU, got 3 free Holo Grievous'.

Starting out small to begin with so I'll get them eventually, plus I'm hoping there's going to be some sort of sale on these things somewhere.

Sorry Hasbro...I just couldn't afford everything on day 1.

Well I got the Falcon and I WANT the AT-TE but I think I will pass for now anyways. There are so many new figures and such comnig out that I would rather spend the money on plus this whole leg problem with the TE has me worried. Last thing I want is walking into my little SW room only to see my clones crushed under the belly of that beast. It looks cool but the Falcon beat it to my collection.

2 AT-TE's and no Falcon.  The Falcon just doesn't interest me.  It's tied too much to the main characters that I'm just sick to death of.

The AT-TE however is sooooo sweet.  My main interest is army building, and this is right up my alley.

The AT-TE is the undisputed greatest vehicle ever, and the Homing Spider Droid is in my top 5.

We need 3 more biggies:

Just the BMF for me.  It wasn't as hard as I thought to plunk down 150 clams, either!  As someone mentioned, one big thing a year is very reasonable, and this thing is probably the best SW toy ever made (plus, I love the fact that the vintage designer did this one too!)

I didn't buy the AT-TE, as I only buy OT vehicles, and I'm not paying $150 for a Falcon, no matter how good it is.

The AT-TE is what I bought...  It's perfect.  I honestly am shocked how nice it is, and love it.

I skipped the Falcon, partially due to its size, partially due to it obviously being underscaled and my "rule" as it were, and partially just because of cost.  Not that it isn't a decent price...  I'd call it fair.  But ultimately if it creeps lower I'll try to pick it up.  That was my main issue with picking it up now.  $150 just isn't there in the old budget.

As far as new big stuff...

I'd like to see Hasbro tackle a to-scale Slave-1, AT-ST, a To-Scale X-Wing, Y-Wing, and maybe B-Wing, and from there I'm not sure.  Those would ultimately make me very content...  The SNowspeeder too, but I didn't list it as it needs decreased in size to be proper, not increased.  The others would need beefed up a bit, but I'd easily pay $60 or $70 for any of them to-scale (save for the AT-ST...  It's not that large).

Dressel, the "Snail Tank" Droid really isn't that big...  They're pretty tiny vehicles that could work easily in the $20 assortment so long as the two sets of side-treads are removable.  It's a fairly small vehicle really.

I picked up both, I still have not had time to open either yet. (I had to clear out and organize my stuff first in order to make room. Tonight I am cracking both of these puppies up.) Outside of the animated figures I picked up everything I could, even the B-Wing which is really nice but I digress......

All of the stores I went to still had both items but they had a big dent in their stock. My TRU only had 5 BMF left of 50 they had opening night. Some stores like Target only had only one Falcon in stock. One local ghetto Wal-Mart still has not put out the SW merchandise yet. The lazy employees know they have to but they are dragging their feet. I thought I would have made out awesome there on 7/26 there but I was wrong. Judging by the early sales these look like they did very well. XMas time will really tell the story.

I will pick both up again but would keep the Falcon Boxed. If they scale more vehicles I prefer OTC ones like the AT-AT, AT-ST and a Star Destroyer with a cool bridge. Jabba's Sail Barge would be my choice for the next large vehicle. since Hasbro said they would not make that that most likely means they are working on it right now.

I'd like to see that happen too.  The Snowspeeder in particular has always been one of my favorite vehicles, and really didn't realize how oversized it was until you pointed it out Jesse.  Although it would be an all-new sculpt, I really think it is something that could fit into the "starfighter" assortment at $20.  There is a severe lack of OT vehicles in that assortment the way it is, and it would be nice to see some that could fit in there (Cloud Car and AT-ST probably could as well).

This makes me wonder. Which is selling better? The AT-TE or the Falcon. Based on today's small store run, I would say the AT-TE.

As amazed as I am with the Falcon, I'd guess the AT-TE is probably selling better.  Fifty dollars cheaper and never made before at all makes a big difference to a lot of people, and it sounds like those who have picked it up are very happy with it.  Also, it might sound strange, but for some people (especially those with wives/girlfriends with them), the AT-TE might be a little less "intimidating" with the box size and all.  I mean, there's no way around it, the Falcon just looks huge when you see it in the box (and open).  When I put one in my cart at WM, it seemed like a lot of people were looking as I went to check out with it.  Its a big toy.  I was saying in another thread that I was surprised how compact the box for the AT-TE is considering the size of the vehicle.  They should be able to keep that in the regular action figure section for awhile, where as the Falcon almost requires a special display or endcap.  I hope to pick up the AT-TE at some point too, once the budget is replenished (and if I can find somewhere to put it) - but I didn't want to miss out on the Falcon (which is well worth it as well, I think).

Heh, it's like you and I are joined at the hip. I got one of each and still haven't opened them. Had to make room and still am doing so. Beyond the one of each, I plan on getting at least 1 more AT-TE if not two.

Beyond these two, I also bought:
B-wing
V-19
X3 Homing Spider droids
X2 Hoth speeder bike sets if you would count that towards vehicles.

Those were my main focus for MM and I was successful at getting all I wanted.

Like you Brian, I picked up the Falcon but passed on the AT-TE.  It looks cool and all, but space issues kept me from picking it up.  The Falcon was higher on my list.
Title: Re: The Big Vehicles - Did You Buy Them?
Post by: Dan on July 28, 2008, 05:04 PM
I picked up the BMF, but space limitations and a focus toward OT has me holding off on the AT-TE. As it is the size of the Falcon has me tossing one of my display cabinets and going to open shelves. A $150 purchase and ditching a $100 cabinet to spend $50 on shelves has my wife seeing the Falcon as more like a $300 buy.

The Wal Mart store that I purchased mine at did not seem to sell any besides mine that day. I checked out the display first thing in the morning, and came back late in the evening once I had talked myself in to just getting it.

Both the BMF and AT-TE pallets were full, and the damaged boxes I had noticed in the morning were still there.

Once the advertising kicks up with the movie, I expect these to move better. But the prequel/CW vechicle at $99 will probably outpace the falcon for sales.

I bought both, the AT-TE a few weeks ago and the BMF at MM. While I don't have the space to properly display both right now, in the future they'll be come cornerstones for new displays. Both are great toys, fun to play with and look at.

In my area I've noticed that both appear to sell well, not many of either to find so I think striking while the iron was hot was a good call for me.

I bought an AT-TE that leaked out a bit early.  As for the BMF?  I'm holding off on the BMF.  I'm just working on a self-imposed budget, and the BMF tipped the scales that would put me over budget.  I'll probably pick one up in a few weeks.  The price seems to be deterring people from buying them.  I've seen more BMF's than AT-TE's at retail, btw.

I got the Falcon and love it. I don't buy vehicles so for a one time purchase it's perfect for me. I might pick up the AT-TE later though, but I'm kind of "Cloned out" so that bias is keeping me from buying a lot of Prequel stuff.

Plan to get the AT-TE and would like the Falcon but need to find space.  I did grab a torrent and pilot set with some other carded items.  Got a vacation coming up so I need to keep myself under control.  Christmas could get a little more crazy. 8)

I'm in the camp that's seeing more BMF's too, than AT-TE's.  Target's AT-TE's flew off shelves, WM's sometimes didn't even slot space for them.  Their islands of Falcons are readily available though, so I'm seeing a difference in the two...  Definitely more Falcons here.  I think the price and also the lack of it pertaining to CW are issues it may have.  It's much more geared to the collector right now with just a lot of enjoyable kid features too.  I think if a kid, who probably is in this for CW stuff, sees an AT-TE, then that's what they'd prefer.

I'm hoping for a 2nd TE, and if I catch a Falcon on sale later on (kind of what Nick was suggesting with the budget thing I think) then I'll get it too.  $100 and I'd be all over it actually.

I haven't been back to Target since the weekend, but we hit TRU and WM yesterday and I wanted to check how things were selling.  I mentioned this in the CW forum, but overall the line(s) seem to be selling like crazy.  The figures and $20 vehicles (V-19 especially) in particular are nearly wiped out where I went.  I checked the aisle display thingy with the Falcons, figures, and lightsabers - and I think nearly all the Falcons were still there aside from the one I picked up (or it was restocked already).  There might have been one more gone.  Granted, its only been a couple days and it might pick up around Christmas time.

WM had two AT-TEs stocked in the regular aisle, but I'm not sure how many they had out on Saturday morning.  I am hoping its a vehicle they keep stocked through the rest of the year.  I'd like to get one eventually, if I can find the room for it.  Like others, I need to do some reorganizing to see where this is all going to fit.

Purchased both.  With all of the Ep IV sounds I've just got to set it up with ANH scenes; I'll use the old MF for ESB.  Sadly, Yarna could not fit into the gun turret as I had hoped.  :(

I stopped by Target today and they had one each of the Falcon (endcap) and the AT-TE (aisle).  I'm not sure if they are the same ones, or if there is restocking though.  Between here and Wal-Mart though, the AT-TE seems to be selling fairly regularly so far, and the Falcon its tougher to say.  Like others have said, it might be more of a "holiday time" type of thing.

From what I've seen so far:

Target - No Falcons, 2 AT-TE's

Wal-Mart - "Centerpiece" similar to the Indiana Jones ones from May with Falcons and AT-TE's, there are more Falcons than AT-TE's

TRU - 1 Falcon, 3 AT-TE's

Also, WM is the only store that I've seen give equal space to both big vehicles. Target only has price tags for the AT-TE, and TRU looks to have enough room for about 2-3 Falcons and 4-6 AT-TE's.

I was just going through this thread and counting things up, and just here at JD alone (or in those who have replied) I counted up 14 each of the Falcon and AT-TE that have sold.  That's 28 vehicles of $100 or more, so I'd say - at least according to our small "focus group" - that things are selling pretty good.  We'll see how they do overall though.  Also, just looking through the replies here again, it seems like the majority of people who have only grabbed one or the other (like me), intend/hope to get the other one later on.

KMart is having a buy 2 get 1 free sale on all SW toys!

I'm going to get extra AT-TEs tonight! SO you'd get 3 at $200. That's only $66.67 each before taxes. A STEAL, IMO for the AT-TE.

Oh and this SALE ENDS TOMORROW!!!

So go get them NOW! You're unlikely to find a better sale on these in the future. Now is your chance to get them on sale while they are still fresh and NEW!

I grabbed both the AT-TE and BMF on the 26th, and it was like Christmas in July (literally) around my place that afternoon.  Both of them are without a doubt the best ships Hasbro/Kenner has EVER produced for the SW line since its inception.  I opened/assembled the AT-TE first and was in awe, and then opened the BMF and was even more in awe.

Around my area, the distribution has been extremely weird.  One Wal-Mart hasn't sold very many of either, while Target never even got the BMF to sell, and TRU is selling more AT-TEs than BMFs, although the BMFs aren't selling badly by any stretch of the imagination.  I think that overall both of these are going to be huge successes.

We hit 2 Targets (one Super) and TRU this weekend, and all three had 2-4 AT-TEs on the shelves, but only one (SuperTarget) had a Falcon.  I have seen these same shelves empty from AT-TEs, so they must have restocked them.  I haven't been to WM in awhile now to check their aisle display thingy (which had several Falcons), but aside from that, both of these seem to be selling pretty well around here.  Hopefully that continues through the rest of the year, and we can see some more BMF vehicles in the future.  These would be great Christmas gifts for kiddos (or collectors), so maybe sales will pick up as we get into holiday shopping season.

Looking around our stores locally, these both seem to either be selling pretty well - or not shipping very heavily - because they definitely aren't packed on the shelves.  Its always tough to judge, particularly with the Falcon, because there could be several in the storeroom.  Between our three Targets, I think there is currently only one Falcon on the endcap.  WM seems to have a couple left out, and TRU hasn't had any since the launch day (at least that I've seen).  There seems to be 1-2 AT-TEs at each store, but it does seem that they sell through and restock.  Anyways, I'm curious what the longer out sales will be like, but right now they seem to be doing ok - at least around here.  I still wait to hear someone finding some awesome Target clearance deal on the Falcon once they decide to take the endcap down.

I see tons of Falcons everywhere I go, but less AT-TE's...  This is what I figured would happen.  I only see the TE at WM anymore, while I see Falcons at all 3 stores still.  The higher price tag, the lack of being tied to anything recent and maybe relying more on collector-support seem to be detrimental to the Falcon.  I wish the AT-TE was anywhere but WM as maybe I could get another one on sale...  Right now, WM is it here.

I've noticed that lately both of these seem to be in decent supplies in the stores around here (possibly gearing up for Christmas already).  I hope that sales have continued to do as well as they apparently were initially.

Anyways, I was just thinking about the whole "large vehicles" issue, and was wondering what you think would do best at retail.  Obviously, the Falcon and AT-TE are the "tests" for this portion of the market, and if they do well, Hasbro's hinted we could see others.  We've seen rumors from everything from new BMF treatments of OT vehicles (AT-AT and Slave 1), to all new vehicles from the prequels and Clone Wars (Turbo Tank).  When it comes to this pricepoint, do you think new versions of Original Trilogy vehicles or all new prequel-era vehicles would do better overall?  Sure, I think everyone likes to see all-new stuff - but while we've seen many to most of the OT vehicles several times already, they might have more of a broad appeal to buyers (both collectors and casual buyers).  Also, there's always the side issue of the OT seemingly having a little more of popularity movie-wise overall, at least with older buyers.  Or, maybe it doesn't make a difference either way and "Star Wars is Star Wars".  Anyways, I didn't mean this as a OT vs PT debate or anything, but just what would possibly hold the stronger future for the "BMF" line.  Would collectors/buyers get more excited about something along the lines of a BMF treatment of the AT-AT (or insert any other OT vehicle here) or a new Turbo Tank (again, any other vehicle here, just an example)?

My top contenders for a large scale vehicle are (in order of preference):

Jabba's Sail Barge: tons of play value if rooms/compartments are made into the body of the craft. A lot of action happened around this vessel in a key scene in the movie. Now that it's been sighted in the cartoon movie and may appear in the cartoon show, it's got more appeal

Clone Turbo Tank (Juggernaut): This is already rumored to be coming out. My hopes is that it's at least as big as the AT-TE (though even that would be grossly underscaled). Though I'd really like something on the order of how tall the AT-AT toy is. Though this would mean it would be longer than the AT-AT toy as well.

Redux AT-AT: A larger version of this is definitely needed. At least 12-18 inches taller. Electronics, more room in the body for troops and the new snow speederbikes. This vehicle begs to be made at a larger size. Now a caveat/compromise would be to redux the Snowspeeder to make it smaller, so that both redux vehicles would be much closer in relative scale to each other than the current too large snowspeeder and too small AT-AT we have now.

These have been widely available here since 7/26.  WM's have the most of both the Falcon and the TE, but Target has their share of both as well.  I'm not shocked...  $100 to $150 is a lot of money.

At almost any store around here there are only a couple left of each. I'd say they're selling pretty well.

When I was out the other day, during my short time in the toy isle, I saw, at two different times, two 30ish non-collectors come over and marvel how cool the BMF was to their buddies/kid respectively. That has to be translating into sales.

I still see the Falcon on most of my toy runs.  But the most I've seen in one place lately is three.  And the AT-TE?  I haven't seen one in at least a few weeks.  Given the high volume of collectors around my area it's good to see that the demand is strong.

And I think that demand bodes well for large vehicles in the future.  Granted, the Falcon has an iconic status that's tough to match.  But the AT-TE really only had limited exposure before the current Clone Wars series and theatrical release.  It's good to see that the AT-TE is selling well.  I think part of that sales success story is the fact that it's a great toy.  Hasbro came up with some great play features that make it a lot of fun.  The motorized boarding ramp had more than a few people captivated at Toy Fair.

Now if the rumors of the Turbo Tank are true?  That could be very cool.  And I saw on another board that our trusty Rune_Haako suggested that the Turbo Tank be made as an R/C vehicle.  Talk about play value!  And given the size of those wheels on the Turbo Tank, it's something that totally lends itself to this vehicle.  And doing that would be something of a nod to the old Kenner Jawa Sandcrawler with it's 1970's tech R/C controller.  And the drive systems would probably fit pretty well in the Turbo Tank's sizable undercarriage.

I'm contemplating getting another AT-TE... but I also want a new digital camera, as well as I want to buy a Schleich Castle and customize it... can't decide on what to do.  The camera is probably what I'll end up doing.

Regarding a Turbo Tank, it would be nice to see it have a remote control feature.  I don't think that's out of the question since the AT-TE and Falcon are both electronic... and that's a good point Nicklab, there's a lot of room for them to fit in the drive systems for it.

If they do release the Turbo Tank and it's around the size of the AT-TE, I will be very pleased.  Though I know that's way out of scale, I don't mind...

I just hope that we get a Sail Barge before it's all said and done.

I have concluded that this is the only large scale vehicle i would buy.

As for the Falcon and AT-TE, i see the falcon everywhere but have seen the AT-TE consistantly at 1 TRU. It seems to be the better seller.

It wouldn't surprise me if the AT-TE sells better for the two obvious reasons - the lower price and because of the Army Builders.  It's crazy, but there are people out there buying multiple AT-TEs, whereas I don't hear about too many people army building the Falcon.  ;)

I still think an AT-AT more properly scaled would be the best big vehicle option.  Not to sound like Hasbro, but it has a much more aggressive play option than would a sail barge.  It's funny because I think a sail barge needs to be close to scale to be effective, but an AT-AT can be underscaled and still work (and it would be a lot easier to package).

Absolutely!  I mean, I'm not resistant to a Sail Barge, but I guess since I made one as a partial diorama and partial vehicle, I'm biased.  But a close-to-scale AT-AT would be tougher to scratch-build, and it just seems like a better contender for Hasbro development dollars.  (And again, they would be hard-pressed to be able to make a barge fit in a box properly.)

It's not that I don't think a new AT-AT doesn't have it's merits. BUt I really feel it's an FU to the fans that shelled out 100 for the Endor version not too awful long ago. Even after the excitement of POTF2 wore off and I was out again, I remember seeing this repacked behemoth at a TRU sometime during it's initial neoclassic run. I couldn't believe they wanted 74.99 for it. And to this day I don't think it's worth that. Then again in 06, as an avid collector, I made this the 1st vehicle I passed on after dropping my jaw at the 89.99 then 99.99 price tag. Anyways, I feel like I was smart by doing so. Eventually I'd find one from 97 in a comic shop for $20 and snag it as mine, but many collectors did shell out that money at TRU and I've seen pic of some collections that have 2 and up to 10 of these monsters. If I had that invested, the last thing I'd want to see is Hasbro up the ante on this. Which again, isn't saying they shouldn't, but it's just disheartening to know that any vehicle is game, and my old "enter vehicle name here" might not be the cool one available. God knows what I'd do if they ever scaled the Republic Gunship, I've got 4 of those! (j/k, I'm perfectly fine with my stuff)

To partake in the other aspect of the conversation, I don't have the BMF since I'm okay with the one I have, and I got an ATTE at midnight madness, I may pick up a second in that battlepack that comes with a **** load of figures for the same price. ( if it's the same price)

I'm curious to see how these will end up selling through the holidays.  It seems like many (maybe the majority) of people here seem to be seeing both of these (depending on area) sitting at most of their local stores.  I could grab either one locally as well, with the Falcon sitting at both Target and WM, and the AT-TE primarily at Target (and occasionally TRU and WM).  They do seem to be selling, as I see the stock go down little by little.  It also seems like these are starting to get discounted already, which might be more to do with holiday savings/economy than them being poor sellers.  Our Target currently has the BMF on sale for $127, and I see that HTS and other online retailers have dropped their prices a bit on these as well.  There is word of discounts on the AT-TE as well.

Its kind of a tough year for these, with the economy what it is, and with both being out at the same time.  I know we have discussed that before, staggering out the "large vehicle" releases a bit, and I'm wondering if that would help them or not.  That being said, it will be interesting to see how these things sell in the next month to month and a half.  Personally, I hope they do well, as I'd like to see more.  I know that a lot of people here don't even collect the vehicles, but I wouldn't mind seeing some more OT vehicles get the BMF treatment (1 a year is plenty for me personally) - and I know there is a big following for more of the PT/CW vehicles as well.  We'll know more in a couple months probably, but what do you think is the "top dollar" for something like this at retail?  Is it $100?  Does it depend on the ship/vehicle?  Should Hasbro stick to one "BMF" vehicle each year?

Lately, I've seen more AT-TE's than BMF's. A run last night to the local big 3 (TRU, WM, and Target) found that WM had 3-4 AT-TE's and no BMF's, Target had 2 of each, while TRU had a whopping 2 dozen AT-TE's on a top shelf and 2-3 BMF's. Besides the irregular amount of AT-TE's at TRU, I've been seeing definitely more of the walkers than the Falcons in Chicagoland as of late.

I don't know if this is just a local thing or not, but the "Black Friday" weekend really did wonders for these vehicles around here.  We were out shopping throughout the weekend, and visited all of the "big 3", and both the Falcon and AT-TE were sold out at Target and WM, and were getting close at TRU when we were there.  Nice to see these selling well, hopefully it will continue.  Star Wars in general seemed to be selling like crazy, particularly the basic figures and vehicles.

TE's went for $75 and stuff.  I got one for that, shipped free, from Hasbro...  Outstanding!  The Falcon's are all I see now, though I did see $99 Falcons at WM tonight.  I was SO tempted to buy.   :'(

AT-TE's are all pretty much gone here around Pittsburgh though.  WM occassionally has one or maybe two.  They have lots of Falcons though...  Anywhere from 3 at the least, to 10 or so, usually stocked outside the toy area.

Title: Re: The Big Vehicles - Did You Buy Them?

I guess this year this technically just goes for Clone Wars, but the topic in general is still valid.  With the big "Turbo Tank" out this year, how many are buying (or have bought) it?  I know I've seen it several times around town (at Target and TRU so far), and it seems like a couple have sold but there is always at least one on the shelf.  I don't know if that's a good indicator or not, because we saw the AT-TEs and Falcons sit to some extent last year as well (depending on the area I guess - and both have made a comeback at our local TRU now).

The excitement level for the Turbo Tank doesn't seem quite as high as it was for last year's ships, although I think the reviews so far have been pretty positive from a "fun toy" standpoint.  I personally haven't picked one up, but may later depending on budget (or if a really spiffy deal comes along sometime next year - I didn't have the money at the time of the Target.com deal).  It seems like the "1 per year" big vehicle model is something that Hasbro would like to continue for the Star Wars brand, and I like it as well.  It is sort of nice having that big "holiday" toy out there, sort of like the vintage line had a few "big items" throughout its run as well.  I remember things like the Falcon, AT-AT, and Death Star being on a lot of Christmas lists when I was a kid.

Going into next year, there seems to be a lot of rumors of an all-new Slave 1.  That would make sense.  I think Adam mentioned it over at GH this week, but there are obviously Mandos in CW this season, hints at Boba Fett appearing in both the animated and live action series, and it is the 30th Anniversary of ESB.  Plus, they really could add in some spiffy stuff to an all-new, larger Slave 1.  The other choice would probably be an AT-AT (if we're staying with the ESB anniversary theme).  I'm not sure what other CW vehicles would be good candidates right now (with Hasbro apparently a little more wary about the Seperatist side of things), so unless we see something new in the animation it might be time for an OT offering again.

BMF...  Yes, on clearance at WM for about $50.  I did this because it's very off-scale, but very iconic.  I intend, quite insanely, to figure a way to hang it from the ceiling.  Anchored properly, it'll hang, but my concerns on how well it'll "display", and so I'm hoping to have it tipped downward so the top/nose are very visible.  It's the Falcon...  I was prepared NOT to get one, but when I could for so cheap, I caved.

Turbo Tard Tank...  Hell no.  The scale's so wildly off that I could not justify it.  It's a great toy, but it's a bad representation of a Turbo Tank.  I would've been more inclined had Hasbro tried less to make it "big" and instead made a small scout version of it that was more designd proportionately around that concept.

AT-TE...  Yes...  The AT-TE's a very well-scaled little vehicle, and I was quite shocked to be honest.  I got two, first one I got at a discount from Hasbro perks that year, and the second I got at a steep discount from Hasbro Toy Shop for free shipping as well.  I would like a 3rd, maybe even a 4th.  I'd love to do an Imperial deco with an accurate interior to the ICS books, and I'd like to muddy up one in a CW deco with an equally accurate interior.  I'll keep one "stock" most likely though as well.  That's kinda why I'd enjoy 4 of them.  :-\

I have supported them and will continue to.

BMF yes, my favorite SW vehicle ever made, hands down.
I want to get another but I want to keep it boxed and get it on clearance. I missed it when it hit $50 at WM, I even watched some beardo walk away with the last eight of them. >:(

AT-TE x2
I really like it and I bought two at $90 when it was on sale when it was first released. I never did get those replacement legs.

Turbo Tank - I have it but I never opened it yet because I am packing getting ready to move. I did buy this with much less enthusiasm because I was not really yearning for it. I am sure it's nice but I am only buying one.

I have supported every one hoping to get a Big Slave One, AT-AT or Sail Barge one day. I am really hoping the Big Slave One is next in line, I think the Turbo Tank will do well just not as well as last years big boys. It seems to be selling slower than the previous ones as many members pointed out. All that may chnge in October when the Christmas shopping season starts.

AT-TE-Yes.  Full Price

Turbo Tank-Yes.  Full price, just today.  It's a fun toy, but my 5 year old got frustrated that he couldn't push the speederbike in.  In really does take some strength.

When I bought the BMF I realised this toy was a must in my collection, because I have never bought any version of the Falcon (They always have been expensive), other reason was the BMF is itself a playset (Dejarik table, gunner station, medic bay, smuggler compartments, etc).

I´m satisfied with the paintjob and decals inside, also with the scale.

When thinking in big vehicles I wonder if Hasbro would make the new Slave I near the BMF size (potf2 and Otc Slave I´s feature a small cockpit for only Boba)

Perhaps an interesting toy would be a Sote Outrider (big size)

More, do you think The current X wing fighter got its definitive size.... or Hasbro will launch a newer, bigger and more complex Incom 65 Xwing?

Finally in a wishlist I want a big ATAT and a big Rebel transport.

I really would love to have them all, because this is a line that I see worthwhile in the future, and in my defense I've not really supported any of the Clone Wars era figures or vehicles. Unfortunately the BMF was just too expensive to justify especially with the price of a basic figure skyrocketing past what I termed my limit in the last year or two.

I picked up the AT-TE today as it was on sale at my local TRU, and because I had a $10 off coupon.

I probably will pass on the Turbo-Tank unless it has a similar sale.

The Falcon and AT-TE still seem like a sure bet for another 50% sale at TRU. I was at one this morning before bringing my mom in for a pre-biopsy and they must have got another 4 of each in on top of what they have already.

I don't care what H claims but these large vehicles were either produced in far too lrage of numbers, or sales really weren't there.

I know myself, I bought both of these on clearance after XMas last year and am still holding out on the Turbo Tank. One WalMart here is just about done finishing up a remodel and has the Tank on clearance for $85, but I definitely see it going even lower soon.

Just not the right time or economy for such substantial vehicles with such substantial prices.

The AT-TE sold fine in its initial run and the Falcon did not do bad either.

TRU received more this summer of the AT-TE, but before that there were not to be seen in stores for 6+ months... and it's not like Wal-Mart or Target have them anymore.  Some did hit clearance last year, but not in high numbers.

The Falcon is currently only available at TRU and you might spot one at a K-Mart, so nothing to worry about there from what I can see.

Both of those must have done well enough for so many retailers to be carrying the Turbo Tank.  If they took a huge hit on last year's big vehicles, they would not have dedicated shelf space to a big item in 2009 (and Hasbro's GI JOE line would not have supported their $100 item either, which actually HAS sold very poorly it seems).  But in terms of the AT-TE and Falcon, what you're seeing at TRU now is a certain retailer carrying additional product that you really can't find at other retailers... after all, they are a toy store chain.

However, I agree that the Turbo Tank offering has not sold as fast as the big items we saw last year.  I think part of it is the economy, but I think a bigger part is that fewer people are fans of it as compared to the AT-TE, which was something people had been clamoring for since 2002.  The Turbo Tank has a smaller support base simply because the demand is lower.

Will we see more big items in the future?  I surely hope so.  The success of the Turbo Tank is probably going to dictate how Hasbro moves forward.  I did my part and bought one at full price (love it actually, and would have gladly paid more than $100 for it), and might get a second one as well.  And personally, when you look at getting something as big as the Turbo Tank versus a dozen figures, I think your $100 is better spent on the big item.

I see it much differently.

And I promise I can speak with some knowledge having known, or knowing Hasbro employees. Hasbro is moving dead stock at the moment to TRU on both the AT-TE and Falcon for a song. True, they are the only store taking on these items, but that is due to the stylized stores they are (as well as being a "toy store".

Both Target and WalMart have much less shelf space to share and dedicate to large items these days. Target has always been somewhat restrictive, but WalMart has also no taken that stance. If you notice Target has never had isle featured shelving. Also they never have overstock except for a month to month and half period before XMas.

WalMart on the other hand has always had featured isle shelves along with the dept isles as well. Also many have had overstock along outer walls. They have completely moved fromt that though now and any new store or store that has gone through a redo has completely moved away from this. Isles are clear and wide.

They have also shrunk their toy sections based on economic times. The necessities are the bread n butter these days as it is for the consumer. While I'm sure Hasbro offered these pieces up to both Target and WalMart on the same discount they did TRU, both seemed to have declined due to being able to get the most for their buck.

Both of these items take up some major shelf or overstock room.

Being TRU still has isle shelving, isle presentations (i.e. Falcons stacked in a cube style 4-5 high), and overstock they took the offer up. It's much like the POTF2 clearance days, but on a smaller level. AT-AT's at $10 anyone?

TRU has opted to not give such a huge discount as the AT-AT days, but they also aren't getting these for free or next to free like they did with the POTF2 glut stock. So even at 50% TRU is still making money. I have heard they could go even a bit lower and still make a profit, but these days every dollar counts so throw the customer a bone, they bite, and we still make a little more than blowing them out for less than we could.

Turbo Tanks? They are sitting pretty much everywhere here. A few initially sold, but honestly they are collecting a few layers of dust now.

What I think so many people don't realize is Hasbro DOES give product away to retailers. Yes, 100% free. I know a local WalMart that received their first full endcap of Shadow ARC's for absolutely no cost to WalMart. This is just a scratch my back I scratch yours deals. It's nothing new by far. The old WalMart exclusive Clone Wars two packs from the first micro series was the same. Why do you think WalMart let them go for $4.97 for a two pack???

So it's really no sign pointing to the validity at all these large vehicles were bought up to keep them going on.

I don't think we're in complete disagreement here as we both see why TRU took these items in... but I will say that the AT-TEs that are at TRU now aren't part of the 2008 run - these have the fixed legs.  Hence, it doesn't look like these came to them as something Hasbro wasn't able to push last year, as we know those were faulty product.  Regarding the aisle feature shelving, last year Target had no problem stocking Falcons and AT-TEs on their shelves, and also have the Turbo Tank in their current planogram which is a big item.  I don't think this is the end all determining factor if items like this are going to continue to be made - it's how well they actually sell.

It kind of sounds like you're advocating for Hasbro to stop making these items though when you say there's no sign pointing to the validity that the 2008 large vehicles were bought up to keep them going on.  It seems like you're looking for more justification for Hasbro to just stop now with big items.  Personally I want to see these items continue to be made... ever think that part of the problem is people waiting for them to go on clearance like you have been doing?  Not that I can say I blame you if other things are more important to you, but for anyone who is an advocate for these items being available, I'd hope they would actually support both Hasbro and the retailers when items like these are released.

First my error on the misspelling... My mind isn't all that crystal clear being what I might be facing with my mom...

Secondly, the AT-TE are indeed not being made any longer and haven't been since 2008. Don't believe it grab one of those boxes at TRU and check date stamps. The AT-TE has long been out of production. If you know anything whatsoever about toy lines they are made a year to 6 months in advance. It's dead stock and it's alled that for a reason.

Sure Target stocked the AT-TE, and Falcon on the shelves in the aisle because it was part of last years existing line. Target's stock is based heavily on trend hence why they clearance faster than anyone.

If these vehicles had sold how Hasbro thought, or claims, TRU would not be getting the dead stock they're getting now. I can also assure you (which I know for fact) the Tank of this year was made in smaller numbers. Of course numbers with Hasbro are Fort Knox like, from what I was trold they opted to go a little more conservative with the Tank this year.

You seem to have some back up when it comes to Target, but nothing with America's largest retailer/discounter WalMart... No thoughts there?

Third, I never said to end the large vehicle idea. I do however think there might be a better time and/or place in the future for them as now really isn't one. If you determine sales of said vehicles based on stats of these days it's really not a truthful determination. People are holding their wallets and pocketbooks far tighter than they have in over 10+ years. People need to just make it through the day, week, or month and $100+ toys aren't topping out their lists of needs.

So there you have it. Don't assume taht of which you don't know there Chewie.

No worries, there's a spell check feature too, and good luck with things with your mother.

I think it's a given that since you didn't see any AT-TE's shipping for about a 6 month span, the initial launch of those did just fine and justified Hasbro releasing the Turbo Tank.  If they had done poorly, you would have seen more clearances with them, and also them collecting dust at places that refused to lower the price.  And of course it's a no brainer that if they had done bad, Hasbro would have put the Turbo Tank on the backburner and it would not have been released (at least not yet).

As for Wal-Mart, I'm not sure what you're asking me to explain.  I can't speak for the rest of the country, but in the midwest most Wal-Marts had big displays for the AT-TE and Falcon last year, and also had dedicated shelf space in the main Star Wars aisle for the AT-TE.  The Falcon stayed on promo endcaps and island displays.  Some stores moved them out on clearance when they deemed they needed the promo space for newer items, which often weren't toy related.

And yeah, I can see that the boxes for the AT-TE at TRU are the same, hence the blue packaging.  However the product inside from what I have seen and heard is that they all have the "fixed" legs.  I don't know what we're even arguing here, unless you're stating that you think there's a whole bunch of these from last year that never got out to retailers when Hasbro was hoping they would.  Unless I see an official statement from Hasbro on that, I'm going to question it, especially given the legs issue being fixed on the ones that are at TRU now and the fact that they all of a sudden got in massive shipments of these in July or August (or whenever it was) and they had a huge sale on them as soon as they came in.  That clearly was a worked out deal that TRU and Hasbro had planned, probably for a long time that was in the works.  And it worked great - those suckers sold like hotcakes at that price.  Also, based on some Q&A responses from Hasbro, the AT-TE seems to have done fine and met expectations well before any of the recent shipments hit TRU.

My whole point with all of this is that I don't think that there's reason to think that the big items in the line are a failure by any stretch of the imagination.  Hasbro might be more gunshy about this sort of thing in the future depending on the economic forecasts, or of course if the Turbo Tank proves to not have sold well after the Christmas season.  However, I think the bigger factor is the sales of it and not projections for the rest of the economy.  Hasbro doesn't seem to be slowing down one bit with this line and are enjoying amazing profits even in an economic downturn.  Is there a better time for something like the Turbo Tank to be out?  Sure - but if you look around the boards, a lot of people have said they also haven't bought it simply because they don't like it that much.  So that's a factor too.  And like you originally said about last year's items probably going to be on sale again at TRU - I agree.  I can't see them not doing another sale, and would guess one has already been planned for quite some time.

BTW, the Turbo Tank is on sale next week for $79.99 at TRU... really a good deal for this thing.  I think I'm going to flip a coin between getting another one of those or the $49.99 Gunship.

By the way, JES, I really don't mean to argue with you on this.  We both have our opinions, and that's good enough for me.  And I find it enjoyable to talk to another collector about this sort of topic that I haven't interacted on the boards with much.  You make some very valid points.

I passed on both the AT-TE and Falcon last year strictly on price.  Even though I really don't have room for either, it was price that decided it. I didn't think either was overpriced but I just didn't have the cash.  I did kind of mess up because I could have scored a clearanced Falcon at Target after Christmas but forgot to stop on the way to work on discount day and they were gone when I got out.

I did buy the AT-TE at TRU when they first offered it for $50 this summer.  I don't have any plans to buy the Turbo Tank at any price, however, as I just don't care for it quite as much.  It seems to be lacking some of the cool play features of the AT-TE, at least IMO.

If I could pick up a Falcon for around $75 I might do it as I think that may be one of the best toys Hasbro has ever done for the SW line...and that's saying something because they've done some really excellent toys over the years.

I got the AT-TE last year with a slight discount from Target.  It needs new legs (or at least my own modifications to make them stay on) but is otherwise an excellent vehicle and truly an impressive piece of work by Hasbro.

The Falcon was very tempting, but I did not get it right off the bat.  $150 was way too much for me at the time, even despite the sentimental fact that I had always wanted the Falcon since I was a kid back in the '80s.  They did not move quickly in my area so then came the discounts after the holidays.  First the Falcons were at $90 and then to $60 at Wal Mart, whence I got one.  Totally worth it at that price and it has to be one of the greatest toys Hasbro has made in 25 years.

I have been less impressed with the Turbo Tank.  To me it seems underscaled and more toyish than the AT-TE, especially for the price point.  For whatever reason, it just has not had the appeal to me, so I have not felt inclined to get it.

I agree it's underscaled, but it's still really cool in my opinion.

Just for fun, here's some cool pics of a couple in action that a few customizers in the Chicago area put together for the Hasbro diorama contest:

This was my gripe with the Turbo Tank as well...  It felt much more toyish than the AT-TE, which really just looked like it needed a better paintjob to feel more like a prop replica and less like a toy.  The Turbo Tank's a good toy for sure, and so is the Gunship, the ARC-170, and tons of other stuff.  But the scale + price on this really just made it a no-go for me, and an easy pass.  It's more like a small armored scout vehicle than a big rolling command center.

I've loved the AT-TE since I got it.  I may try for a 3rd one here too on sale.

I actually like the fact that they made the Turbo Tank toyish.  I know where they were going with it.  They know it's not nearly as in high demand as the Falcon or AT-TE was with collectors and general public.  So, they wanted to broaden the appeal a bit I think and try to aim it at kids.  I think it will start selling better the more we get closer to Christmas.  If there are kids out there that are as into the show as claimed to be you will have parents or grandparents snag it as the "big" Star Wars item for that kid.

Yeah, more than likely it won't have a chance at outselling or even really competing with the Falcon or AT-TE especially since those 2 items were just out on the shelves recently.  Although I never see the Falcons anymore, just a few AT-TEs here and there.  Anyway, I am glad I got a shot at the AT-TE and hopefully in the future they will make some more big items like this.  I don't know what they would actually consider though?  Probably just the AT-AT?  I can't ever see them actually adding the Landing Craft with all the battle droids.  They always shoot down the Sail Barge.

I agree that the Turbo Tank looks like a better toy, or at least more like a toy than the AT-TE but I don't hold that against it.  I think that's great, actually, but I just didn't think it looked like something that I wanted, as a toy, in my collection.

I'm not sure what else Hasbro could do in the BMF style but the AT-AT would be a good one, make it a little bigger to go with the new AT-ST we're getting.  I think the Twilight from the Clone Wars would be a good one...it's getting plenty of exposure, it's aggressive and if it's made large enough it can have a playset in the back for staging Clones and droids and whatnot, just like the Tank or AT-TE.

I think the Gunship could be up-sized as well, but I don't think Hasbro will do that.  It's already pushing the $100 limit now and to make it much bigger would put it over the top.  Plus, unlike the Falcon or even a Twilight, the Gunship needs to be of a size where it can be "flown" around by kids.  I'd like to see it, but again, don't think Hasbro would do it.

I think an upsized Gunship is a to-scale Gunship...  Which I'd like because the turrets look comical ont he current one IMO, but I love them so (just found them tonight).

The "toy like" aspect is a really person-to-person thing...  For me, the AT-TE is pretty well perfect.  The X-Wing is not.  The TIE Interceptor/Fighter/Bomber is.  The Juggernaught is not.  And so on.  For me though it has a lot to do with what's to-scale or falls within the leeway I'm willing to give (because scale often varies slightly with SW stuff).  The upcoming AT-ST falls into the hell yeah category, but current Snowspeeders don't.

Sometimes that's usually all it takes.  The X-Wing is good though in that it's a great toy I think for the most part, and it's very realistic looking, it's just far too underscaled to suit me.

That same thing can be said for the Gunship, ARC-170, and so on.

The Turbo Tank I feel isn't as good as those though...  It looks a little realistic, but not as nice as the above.  It's a bit more, to me, toyish looking.  Not horribly so, but enough I really feel it just looks off a bit.  Definitely off from what it's intended to be, and obviously nowhere near to-scale.

The same would be said for a new AT-AT because there's no way they're doing a 50" tall AT-AT.  I gave the BMF a pass because I got it on uber discount and, hey, it's the Falcon.

I think the Twilight would be a great addition to the bigger vehicle line-up though, and if they delivered something real spiffy I may cave, but for $100 I really don't think they'd pull something off I was totally happy with.

I heard a funny story about "big vehicles" not too long ago.  It was interesting actually because it entailed a lot of "what they want, and what can be done" discussion.  I wish there was a series of "1:18 (Star Wars isn't exactly this scale though)" vehicles that were done as a collector's series.  It'll never happen, but it's one of the few things I'd pay through the nose if it came to be in some alternate universe.  In the end, doing them yourself is ultimately the only answer for a lot (most) stuff.

A weird story that sort of goes a little with this discussion though, the 1:18 military lines I'm into are going to do pieces of flight deck from aircraft carriers, to display modern jets on, as well as flight crews, pilots, and vehicles for support of the planes.  Pretty crazy stuff, in terms of scale because 1:18 modern jets are pretty massive.  Much larger than a lot of scale Star Wars fighters and things, actually.

I agree with you 100% on that one. I think the Twilight would be an excellent, and logical, choice for that price range. As far as TCW, I don't think there are a lot of compelling candidates for big toys left, except for maybe the Republic Attack Shuttle.

I would not be surprised to see the Twilight in 2010 if the show continues to hold strong.

I scored an almost complete legacy AT-AT for $28! It is missing the cheek missles, and the Speeder bike. It has the “strut” things on the legs. This thing is an awesome, impressive toy.

I got it at a consignment shop where the store gets 50% which means the guy who sold it only got $14 for it!  I may now sell my misb one I have been keeping for my son.

That's a good deal for sure.  They're selling for fairly insane $ on eBay I think, like all the bmf ships.  I think how funny it was all this was on clearance and new movies and new generations of collectors are willing to so grossly overpay for this stuff.

I asked the shop owner to contact the consignor to see if he had a BMF to move.  Never got one and was totally bummed that it wasn’t rereleased for TFA.

Great score. I've gotten a couple over the years that I need parts for.  Those missiles...always lost.
