Title: Walmart "New" TIE Bomber
Post by: Jesse James on July 16, 2010, 02:53 PM
Some pics of the new TIE Bomber unveiled today...

(http://www.jedidefender.com/news/images/1-08/010Vin_TIEBomberBoxed01_TN.jpg) (http://www.jedidefender.com/news/images/1-08/010Vin_TIEBomberBoxed02_TN.jpg) (http://www.JediDefender.com)
Clicky to check 'em out!

The boxed shots reveal that the ship apperas to have a retooled cockpit, which Hasbro confirmed, and which features the ejection seat of the updated TIE cockpit.  That's cool I think since film evidence suggests TIE's had ejection seats.

The box also shows that it now has a firing concussion missle tube too, something only seen/used in video games.  That rocks! :)

The only gripe I have is the back of the box appears to show it in a light grey color, which isn't accurate to any film.  The Bomber shows up light grey in the original X-Wing game, but otherwise it's the blue-grey coloring it has been released as before.  So I'm hanging onto my old ones happily, and the new one I'll only purchase one of for a pre-ESB TIE Bomber in the light grey decoes the ships of ANH were in I guess.

It appears to be a regular release vehicle too, no exclusive sticker anywhere.  That's interesting, and a first for this ship.

That's pretty cool - I haven't bought one of those in a while. It also looks as if they dropped the diorama style packaging.

This is my favorite version of any of the Hasbro's Ties, but I've already got about 7-8 of various releases so I think I'm good.  The firing missle is kinda neat.  Don't really care much for retooled cockpits because, well I guess I just don't care.

Odd that it wouldn't be an exclusive....Wonder if it would have a casemate for a new assortment?
Title: Re: "New" TIE Bomber
Post by: Jesse James on July 16, 2010, 03:36 PM
Yeah, I noticed the lack of diorama.  I thought it may be due to the size of the TIE Bomber, as it's a bit larger than most of the $20-ish ranged vehicles.   ???  Kinda bulky.

Really though...  I suppose it could just not be listed as to where it's exclusive too.  It just doesn't appear to be at the moment I guess.

Put me in the pass column as well.  It looks good and if I didn't already have a TIE bomber from the POTJ line I'd jump at it.

I'm sure it will do well though.

The color is what will decide me buying this or not. I have x2 of the POTJ version. I did not like the Saga2 one because it was too gray, I prefer the blue color more. I wonder if this is now part of the regular vehicle assortment price. This was always a higher priced vehicle.

I love upgrades but this is one that did not really need it, kinda like the AT-AT driver. The interior was fairly more detailed than other vehicles in that time too. I wish they would prioritize better since SKU's are cut down for the realistic line.

Not sure if they will be too much to see at CC, a lot of stuff has leaked already.

The most interesting thing to me are the pics on the back indicating we are getting yet ANOTHER AAT repaint. Man, they love re-doing that thing. (Almost as much as the Gunship)

Swamp Speeder and Hyena Bomber look completely awesome though.

The best AAT in my opinion was the TAC rusted one, I loved it. This one looks interesting, I want to see more detailed pics, I may pic up some. I have x3 TAC ones and x2 CW Blue ones. I am going to dump soon the CW ones soon as well as the TRU CW Hailfire droid, I am just not into the clean separatist style deco.

I think I may pass on the Swampspeeder and Hyena Bomber. They look nice but do not really fit into my collection style.

I think if we see Vintage waves 3 and 4 and a surprise or two, it'll be a hit.

I may get it.  I love the TIE bombers for some odd reason.  Plus it's from the ESB with the 30th anniversary and all it's a good time to release it.

I think it would be neat if it was in vintage style package because the bomber was never made in the original kenner days.  Come to think of it... I think it is the only ship in OT that never got made. other than that it is a pass

Five is a nicer number so you should buy my POTJ version as well.

I see that the display at Celebration V (http://www.rebelscum.com/c5/hasbro/image79.asp) is saying $34.99 at Walmart for this one.

Very glad that it isn't a $50 special like the new TRU Interceptor was.  ::)

I wouldn't be surprised if Wal-Mart jacks the price up a few bucks on this by the time it actually hits shelves.  I noticed that the Jabba's Throne set (which I paid 34.96 for less than two weeks ago before the resets actually occurred) is now ringing in at 38.88 (when I picked one up for a friend earlier this week).  Whatever happened to all those "rollbacks?"  Is WM purposely pricing them slightly higher so they can drop the price in a few weeks and crow about what a great deal it is?

BTW, can someone photoshop that TIE Bomber box to read "DROPPING LOADS" instead of "DROPPING BOMBS?"  Because I'm juvenile and that would make me laugh.   :D

Someone's been listening to a little too much Stern. :)

The TIE Bomber's color looks a lsightly blue-hue to me, so I may actually nab 2 if the price is right on it.  I like the updates.  I'll get 1 regardless.

Someone's been listening to a little too much Stern. :)

Guilty as charged. :)

I'm on the fence about picking one of these up, since I still think the 2002 version is pretty nice when it comes to the interior detailing (at least compared to the non-ejecting-style cockpits on the regular TIE Fighter toys).  This one seems to be a bit more accurate to the cutaway in the "Cross-Sections" book, but I wasn't sure about the color.  I guess I'll make a final judgment once these start showing up and someone out there does a review of it (and if there isn't a whole lot of other stuff occupying my bank account at that moment).

Oh yeah, droppin' dough on it here.

The color's going to be a real determining factor for me ultimately...  light grey's not accurate to the films, at all.  The only light grey TIE Bombers are in EU.  I'd buy one then, and call it a Battle of Yavin version...  In the films though, TIE Bombers are the blue-grey of the latter film's models.  Blue-grey may get me to rebuy this ship twice.

Classic Star Wars ship?  yes.  Vintage Kenner toy?  No.  This is my favorite Tie of the bunch and it wasn't released until POTJ back in 01-02ish if my memory is working now.  Tie Defender?  Please Hasbro??

I like this new TIE Bomber since the Hasbro photos imply it's A) Blue, as opposed to an inaccurate grey, and B) It features the cool EU Concussion Missle feature...  I love that.  I'm weird that way though.  This was one of the better ships Hasbro put out back in the day (a little too blue, of course, but great otherwise), and so I'm going to pick up at least one of the new one.  I have like seriously 6 TIE Bombers already, so I may do a downed one for adiorama like it broke in the center or something, and the Pilot's defending himself nearby or something.

I really dig getting this new one though for some reason.  It's one of those things I was on the fence about at first but am looking forward to it now.

In going over my collection, it just occurred to me that I never got the Saga "battle damaged" version of the TIE Bomber to open. I have the three previous releases (POTJ Green, Saga 2002 Blue, TAC) MIB, but I only have the POTJ and TAC releases open.

I wonder if I should even care? I don't think there was that much of a difference between the POTJ and Saga releases beyond the black smudges/weathering/battle-damage. That's probably the reason I passed on it...

Title: Re: Walmart "New" TIE Bomber
Post by: Jesse James on October 25, 2010, 02:18 AM
I don't even recall that many (if any?) black smudges.  It's actually silver smudges I recall more, like the paint had worn off.  It's really not a nice deco though.  It's sloppy, haphazard at best...  Battle damage, in my view, would've been having holes in one of the solar panels, or having the back corner of one physically blown away and twisted.

I have the battle damaged version, and honestly don't know why I have it.  I probably got it cheap.

Hit a bunch of WalMarts so far this week - and nothing, not even a sign that there will be a shelf space.

Jabba part 2?

I've seen a few of these now, and Jabbas everywhere... and for the $38 price tag, this thing is a ripoff.  At least it is if you compare it to the Jabba set or the Target Hoth sets.

How much was the Tie Bomber at Target a couple years back - $30?   I don't remember...

Well, in my area, only one out of 10 WalMarts was selected to carry Jabba - so getting Jabba was a complete pain.

Do you have any WalMarts that didn't get Jabba that have TIE Bombers? My concern is that only the same WMs that got Jabbas are getting TIE Bombers...

I've not noticed a bomber yet, but Jabbas are around now.  I'd say 50% of stores have them, though I'd say 75%-ish of stores got them in and just a number sold through.

I'd like the bomber, butI'm not breaking my back finding it either.

Yeah, I know it varies from region to region, which makes it painful for some people to find these.

In the St. Louis area, I hit 5 different Wal-Marts somewhat frequently.  A couple stores just once per month, if that.  But I've seen Jabbas at each store, and the ones I hit more often have sold through, then restocked.

As for the bomber, I've seen it at two different Wal-Marts so far.  One of them has a couple Jabbas left, the other did last week but seems to have sold through again.

Also, a collector at Yakface posted a pic here (http://www.yakfaceforums.com/phpBB3/viewtopic.php?f=129&t=5487&start=15) that could indicate stores will be getting in quite a few bombers for the holiday retail push.

My WM's have a number of Jabba's too.  They're selling, but October and early November saw a number of them show up at just about every Wal-Mart...  Christmas shopping is selling them through though, if I had to guess.

No TIE Bombers here, yet.  Probably the next week or two.

Saw this for the first time here locally tonight at the last of 4 Walmarts I hit up today. They only had one on the shelf, no price tag, slightly crushed corner. Kind of an underwhelming debut. Sure they will start to hit more in force next week.

If by that you mean they're all up in Canada, then yes.  All six of my Wally's have about a dozen each.
Title: Re: Walmart "New" TIE Bomber
Post by: tmanthegreat on November 21, 2010, 11:40 AM
Found these in Central California yesterday - the four Fresno-area Wal Marts had nothing, but the rural Sanger store had six of them.  I picked one up and like it.  It is a new tooling from the older TIE Bombers, but the tooling is not significantly different in appearance.  The cockpit has definitely been changed with the ejection seat and new control column.  That probably wasn't necessary given the detailed cockpit on the original tooling, but now the cockpit "matches" the retooled TIE Interceptor and TIE Fighter better.  The bomb-dropping mechanism has been improved as one now loads six bombs into a magazine and twists the rear of the pod to drop the bombs.   The magazine has a sliding hatch to keep the bombs from falling out.  The missile clicks into the port in the front of the ordinance pod, protruding slightly.

My biggest beef is no pilot figure, but its a good ship overall.
Title: Re: Walmart "New" TIE Bomber
Post by: JACKOFTRADZE on December 16, 2010, 10:45 AM
I picked up two of these yesterday and overall I like them. tmanthegreat  summed this up but I want to add some more detail to the description. The tooling is actually the same, Hasbro just slightly modified the tooling on one side with some new internal tooling. (It costs about $5-7k to alter a tool) They altered the bombing side of the vehicle to shoot a front missile,  hold 6 bombs plus has a nifty slide hatch so they do not fall out. They retooled the interior floor plate of the cockpit which was a separate tool in the last model and added the spring loaded missile launcher and rotating bomb dropper. They reused the same newer ejecting chair tool from the recent TRU Interceptor/ Target White Wing Tie. So they really did refresh this a lot.

The blue color is really nice and looks very accurate. However it does not match any previous Imperial ships. I like my fleet to match so
I really hope they match this color when they get around to releasing the Big Wing Tie in blue with the new tooling. (Imperial Officer also suffer from this problem as they sport a variety grays.

My only two complaints is that they did not paint the rear thrusters like the previous versions. (It suffers from what other modern vehicles suffer from - lack of deco) This is also overpriced and really should have came with a pilot as tmanthegreat pointed out. This is one vehicle they reallt did not need a refresh but what they did is pretty cool.

I went to a Wal-Mart that I hadn't been before that's within reasonable driving distance (which is less and less due to gas prices), and found 9 of these TIE Bombers on the clearance aisle...for $39 each.  :P

In the grand tradition of Wal-Mart I expect them to remain that price each time I go back, until one day they disappear with never sign of being marked down.

No. I was going to but was distracted by something else and forgot. I may check that Wal-Mart again, because they actually had Battle Droid 2 packs. Wal-Mart around here are notorious for having stuff in the clearance area that is still full price, like GI JOE, which apparently they've dropped but are in no hurry to unload.

All my WM's are generally the same, but the TIE Bombers, after it seemed like most other parts of the country cleared theirs out, sat till one day they finally were down to $25.  They sold at that point and I haven't seen any locally now for a bit.  I haven't been out as much lately though, so some of my more remote areas may have them yet.

$25 wasn't bad on that bad boy though.  Really kind of a screwjob to not get a pilot, at any price.   :-\

I believe it's a tactic they've been using for awhile now. My girlfriend noticed sometime last year that if it's really on clearance the label has two prices on it. If it's not on clearance it's just the red clearance label with the original price on it. I think they're trying to trick the average buyer who would buy this for their kid into thinking they're getting a deal on it. However, I still thiink a person should always scan what they are buying at Walmart first anyway. I know that sometimes the price on the shelf is wrong. I know when the AT-AT went on clearance only one place I saw it at had it marked $49. Everywhere else I saw it just had them on a shelf in the discount area but no labels and they rang up at $49 too.
Title: Re: Walmart "New" TIE Bomber
Post by: CHEWIE on April 4, 2011, 04:46 PM
I don't think it's a tactic so much as a lack of organization.  When they don't have room in a planogram anymore for some items, they don't always want to clearance them so they throw them in their "extra aisles" which happen to be cluttered with some items that are on clearance, others that are not.

Lack of organization is a problem, but make no mistake about them trying to trick you into thinking you're getting a deal.  I have seen them mark prices down less than a dollar then put things in the clearance aisle.
