Title: The 2011 Mail-In Prototype Armor Boba Fett
Post by: Jesse James on February 7, 2011, 09:39 PM
Any thoughts on what we could get?  Part of me almost thinks it'll be something Vintage-related like the Fett.  Like we'd wind up with a Blue Snaggletooth re-release or something (just throwing it out there, not necessarilly what I believe we'd get).

I could almost see them delivering a Death Squad/Star Commander this way.  After our discussion though, I really am not into the thought of a repaint there.  That character clearly has a very unique uniform compared to other officers, and very clearly compared to the traditional "Death Star Trooper" in the black we're used to.

At the same time, I could see Hasbro say, "Screw it...  It's not really worth the hastle".  I reflect back on Rocket Firing Fett in particular there.  They were pretty geeked about him at Toy Fair because he was 100% aimed squarely at the collector, and I don't know if they were really intending him to even drive sales much, but rather to just give collectors something cool.

However, due to the shipping issues, they sort of faced a lot of criticism that I don't know was really honestly deserved...  at least not in Hasbro's direction specifically, but they took it.  I could just see them backing off a mail-in this year.  Maybe just Clone Wars, or maybe even nothing at all.  These toolings they're putting into them aren't cheap I'm sure.

Anyway, I'm really curious about what we could see in 2011 now.  There's been no real hint so far.

If they want to go collector-oriented again I would  love a carded Blue Snaggletooth.  It's a goofy enough variant that probably would only appeal to collectors.  It's not something that Hasbro would probably want to release nationwide in every Wal-Mart in the land.  I doubt it would do well at retail.  However, as a mail away it might?  Then again it may be to obscure the more I think about it.

Hasbro would probably opt for something with more mass appeal.  Maybe a plastic cape Jawa or Han Solo Stormtrooper?  I'm just hoping it would be a vinty cardback that we either have not had before or one of those figures from back in the day that you wish they had made but never did like Tarkin, Cantina Band Member, Vader ROTJ Rem Helmet, etc.

The good news:

The 2011 mail-a-way is the BMF Sail Barge

The Bad News:

It will take 1,800 Proof of Purchases and $75 for shipping.

After all the shipping issues they faced with Fett, I'll be surprised if they have a mailaway for '11.

Post by: McMetal on February 8, 2011, 09:22 AM
Well, they have already said there will not be a Clone Wars Mail-In offer for this year, so that's what I really wanted. (Ziro!)

I also think the Boba Fett packaging criticism was completely deserved. As a brand, Hasbro is reponsible for anything and everything related to their internal promotions. They get final say over design, packaging, everything. They did not have that issue with previous mail-away promotions, and it seems apparent they tried to skate by with a cheaper, less reliable alternative and got burned. (They had to know what would happen when these things hit the mass media mail sorters)

I do give them props for correcting the issue.

If they were really going for the collector market it would be 1,800 Jedi Master Points! (Come on, admit it, we all still have some somewhere...).

I think a figure that never made it out during the original release (Tarkin, etc.) would be cool.

I'd just like to see some simple army building sets of existing figures in a simple white box mailer.

- Rebel Trooper 4-pk (Vintage mold)
- Stormtrooper 4-pk (Tantive IV mold)
- Gamorrean Guard 4-pk (Vintage mold)
- Republic Commando 4-pk (Evolutions mold)

Mail in 5 UPCs and $20.00, and you get your figures.  Simple for Hasbro and we get some awesome army builders... done and done.

Some?  Probably tens of thousands.  But they're in a box.  Somewhere.

I like the idea of a Blue Snaggletooth reissue similar to the Rocket Fett.  The other vintage releases don't really make sense at this point.  If anything, maybe a sneak peak Clone Wars or Star Wars TV figure could be done.  As I recall, many of the vintage mail-away's were previews of some unknown upcoming figure/character (Fett, Ackbar, Nein Nunb, Emperor).

I'd also be game for an updated version of the vintage wapons pack or the display stands instead of figures.

I think it would be much cooler to do a set piece accessory like the Cantina Distillery instead of the figure.

Even a  Sebastian Shaw Anakin would be very neat and in line with the Vintage line. I liked every single mail away they have made so far so no matter what I hope they continue offering them.

If they want to re release the vintage Death Squad Commander would be cool enough
Other vintage figure could be the tie fighter pilot
Or they could adapt an evolution tie pilot to the vinatge colors, with grey gloves and boots.

The distillery would be cool, however they don't have a bar that can go behind it yet still...  I'd probably dig a U-piece (single, and wider) at this point than the dispenser, just because it's kind of like putting the cart before the horse the other way.  I want the dispender too though.

I can't really imagine Hasbro bothering to wheeze out another mail-away. They've said they're done with TCW mail-aways for the year, and I can't imagine what they would come up with for TVC.

Realistic-styled Jocasta Nu with Battle Game Mat! ::)

I do love mail-aways, but I could see Hasbro feeling reluctant after the Fett fiasco.

With condition of the card being potentially so important to collectors, I could see them shying away from a Tarkin or slave leia on vintage, just because the card condition would be more important than the figure.

I would rather it were something from clone wars- on a vintage style card. The prequel figures have torqued the purists already, so go ahead and completely cross the bridge. Put a nightsister on a vintage card with some cool artwork.

The only thing that kills some of these full-on retro ideas (like a straight Blue Snaggletooth vintage recreation, Yakface, etc.), is that the Boba Fett was delivering something that (pretty much) never existed.  Unpainted ones did, but the painted production thing never happened.

Vinyl Caped Jawas did, and in the realm of vintage I don't even consider Blue Snaggle or Yakface as "rare".  They're pretty widely available.  Compared to the Rocket Firing Boba Fett unpainted figures, they're practically pegwarmers.

So I really can't say I'm that into anything retro vintage.

I would dig a new sculpt Blue Snaggle though that was "modern" but had the Vintage details like the KISS boots and a tall/slender sculpt, with a head more like the 3-Pack Takeel figure and less like the Holiday Special character.

Yakface I'd rather see a new sculpt in the basic line.

Now Vlix...  That's interesting.  That's more in line with the Rocket Firing Fett too I think we can all agree.  I'm more an Admiral Screed man myself though.

I'm not that into Droids but even I'd find Vlix kind of cool.  I'd put him in the Cantina happily enough.

Vlix would be fun, but in a way I don't really care about mail-aways.

Speaking of Admiral Screed...he should show up in TCW.  That would be very cool.

Would everyone want, I'm guessing, a Vintage reproduction of the character then?

I was wondering what a modern updated Vlix would look like...  Just to fit in more with the line as it is.  It kind of opens up something of a pandora's box for updates though then, but at the same time it'd be interesting regardless.

There's a big part of me would be almost more interested in Vlix being given a maybe little bit crisper sculpt and added articulation.  I've not got a really vested interest in Droids/Ewoks stuff though.

Early word I've heard is the picture has the poncho.  I'm hoping if they re-use the existing sculpt, that they include the softgoods poncho for him as that was what I truly missed on the original.  I think it's a neat carded idea regardless though.
Title: Re: The 2011 Mail-In... Will There Be One & What Do You Want?
Post by: speedermike on February 12, 2011, 02:38 PM
Personally, I think it will be the most recent Fett figure we have, painted white.   When ESB was in production, they made the first Fett costume all white.  There's ton's of photos of it.  But they thought that his costume should be different than the Stormtroopers, so Joe Johnston HAND-PAINTED the costume, dings, dents and all, and the final Fett we know was created.

Very cool mail in.

I think it ties really well to the Rocket Firing figure.  It's itneresting, kind of a theme thing going too.  You could almost do your own little Fett carded collection on vintage cards alone and enjoy it if you're a Fett fanatic.

It's cool they are working their way through the Fett decos, much like Medicom did with Kubricks

I'd like to eventually see a Kenner decoed modern Fett, not a rerelease of a vintage sculpt like they just did

For this figure, they got all excited about "beach towel".  Apparently (if someone knows proto-fett history, please chime in), when they did the 1978 screen test with the white Fett suit, he had a star wars beach towel hanging on his belt.  Hasbro is trying to pick a sg material to replicate that look.

Other than that it sure sounded like it would be one of the existing Fett sculpts.  NOT the McQuarrie figure though, as that was a concept figure and this is the prototype Fett.  Like someone else said, basically the movie Fett armor in blacdk and white.

Early word I've heard is the picture has the poncho.

They were non-comittal on the poncho - at first, it sounded like he may have a poncho but later it sounded like they got that wrong and he won't have one.  Remains to be seen I guess.

That's great though since he's sort of new then too...  He'll go neat with the McFigures in a row kind of.  Like the evolutionary chart of man going from primate to walking erect, haha.  Boba could make the ultimate Evolutions pack if they'd do a decent film version of the kid at this point.

I'm surprised at the lack of enthusiasm.  To me this is the perfect bridge between the McFett's and the Movie Fett...  I really think all lined up they'll look interesting together.

If it is a vintage sculpt though I'm much less interested.  Modern and I'm very much more interested in getting probably 3 or 4.

Let me say I really wish we got a poncho with him too...  The whole towel thing's funny but I'd rather get the poncho.  Regardless, I can make one I guess, but I always liked that Clint Eastwood homage.  I just hope it's a modern sculpt they use.  I really want to do that evoultion thing on my shelf.  It's going to have me basically reimagine how I've displayed things because till now, Fett was always with all the other Mandalorians in front of the Clones.

I think part of it is that Fett is getting closer to the point of over saturation just like the clonetroopers are for some of us.  It's also something that noboby was really asking for.  Obviously it will do just fine since it is Fett.  It's a safe move for Hasbro.  In the end it's just a bit on the gimicky side.

Yeah, it's a weak offering, IMO. Who was crying for this thing? I mean, it's not even something from the actual movies, or even anything that fits the vintage motif. No appeal to me whatsoever.

Vlix or the vinyl cape Jawa would have been way cooler.
Title: Re: The 2011 Mail-In... Will There Be One & What Do You Want?
Post by: Jesse James on February 13, 2011, 09:28 PM
Nobody was really clamoring to get it, but nwo that it's here it's pretty interesting I think.  Vlix would be cool, but really a Vinyl Cape Jawa?  Jawas are a dime a dozen, and vinyl for them can be had easily as well.  Carding it's a little more complex of course, but color me underwhelmed by anything I can make myself easily enough.

Fett's popular...  I get some maybe are tired of him, but he's still popular at all levels, so I'm ok with this.  I hope the paintjob's really detailed since it sounds like not a new sculpt.

If it's a lacking sculpt though...  Like Carkoon Fett for instance, that'll be lame.

It's ok.  I think that this is just "ok" to me because we just had a mail away Boba.  Had they done something else, say, a Vintage Anakin ghost, I would have been more excited.

all the same though, just like any other mail away, I am in for one - just not very excited about it.

I like this concept a lot, I also like how it's OTC based too. I rather have this than the Rocket Firing Fett we got this year, if it was a modern sculpt in retro colors I would have loved it. This White Fett will still fit into my collection and if nothing else it gives you another Mandalorian Trooper.

Yeah, for me this is actually superior to Rocket Firing Fett, only because it actually fits into my modern collection.  The RF Fett's cool as a Vintage fun thing, but this to me actually will go with my modern Fett's, Mandalorians, etc., which is ultimately where my main wishes for things are.

Someone correct me if I'm wrong, but I don't think Hasbro revealed the figure. ??? Based on the pictures I've seen, a repacked McQuarrie Fett would be inaccurate. A repainted Evo/VOTC Boba would be the best option. However, I can't help but think that we'll see the Vintage remake rocket-firing Boba painted white.

No...McQ Fett, while similar is subtle enough different from the prototype costume...time to go to the Kubricks!

Left is the Mail Away Figure...the two right ones are the McQ versions which they released in the 30AC line

This would be accurate...a white Evo Fett is probably what we are getting.  It would be neat if they included a helmet with Cpt Rex style horns and a Poncho though too.

Here is the towel people were talking about

(http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_a-Q8O0FYYMw/TQKpwPhT9mI/AAAAAAAAADM/Mr_wXBRohlQ/s1600/Supertrooper+Initial+Review+05.jpg) (http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_a-Q8O0FYYMw/TQKpyGQO50I/AAAAAAAAADQ/wrP4nuBDmKw/s1600/Supertrooper+Initial+Review+03.jpg)

Thanks for that pic - yeah, that's what Hasbro was talking about.  The goal is to find a sg material to make a mini-towel and try to hang it on the belt to replicate that look in the second picture (which is obviously the pic they used for the cardback).  They weren't sure if they could pull it off yet, but they were going to try.

And also, just to confirm what Scott said - this is NOT supposed to be McQ Fett on a vintage card, it will be a Black and White regular movie armor Fett (probably the Evolutions sculpt like Greg/Scott speculated).

It'd be cool if the eventual soft goods "towel" on the figure includes the 'Star Wars' logo.

Hopefully Hasbro also sculpts 2 all-new guns (as seen in the picture), as opposed to just repacking the weapons seen in the films.

The smaller one came with the McFett's and is in some of the Legends weapon packs I believe.  Though the larger one looks a lot like the same gun just a little larger.

Carded and loose images at Sandtroopers (http://www.sandtroopers.com/sandwatch/hasbro/proto_fett/). Looks like they got the beach towel graphic worked in but missed the grappling rocket for the jetpack. Oh well.  :)

I think I am going to try what many others did over at scum and mail one big check and get a case of these. Guys received whole cases that ensured minty product.

Love that they got the beach towel graphic.  I'm not surprised about the grappling hook since it's basically an evolutions Fett with a different color scheme.

I've been seeing more of TVC wave 7 lately, but no stickers or mailaway forms for this Boba Fett yet.  Once those turn up I will not be procrastinating on this mailaway.  I still haven't received my Sgt. Bric's yet.

I would have to think that the mailaway forms might start showing up with the REVENGE wave.  And in a way that's incredibly ironic, since the whole purpose of that wave seems geared much more towards carded collectors who will not be opening their figures.

I'm hoping that, like with the Rocket Firing Fett mailaway, we're allowed to use UPCs from Clone Wars figures.

I have so many army builder inserts from the SotDS Clone Wars line, that I should easily be able to come up with what I need to send away for a good six or seven of these.

Rocket Fett is - he's VCP03. Technically, the Mouse Droid and Salacious Crumb should have been VCP04 and VCP05 and the White Armor Fett should have been VCP06.

This pisses me off because the original form gave us a loophole to use some of the older Clone Wars and Saga Legends UPC codes, which I took full advantage of.  I place the blame for this on the RS forum members who lack a basic level of reading comprehension.

Because the form said "all," they panicked and ran to Hasbro support which only pointed out the possible error in wording, which has now been corrected.  Now, of course, because the form has been changed there will be a whole new set of people panicking because they used "any" of their UPC codes and they'll now be worried that their order won't be filled.  When if they'd just left well enough alone, they'd be fine.

I've always maintained that in general, people cause their own problems and this is a perfect example.  So thanks to the RS members who brought this to Hasbro's attention and potentially screwed up a loophole that we could have used.

Personally I don't think the UPCs are even looked at. You got to remember the people opening these envelopes are dumping out the contents and counting how many UPCs there are and tosing them in the trash. They are not looking at them closely to see if this UPC number matches their "official" list. That don't have time for that. These people are paid minimum wage to open envelopes and enter your address in the computer as fast as they can. They could care less if you included UPCs from Star Wars or from My Little Pony.

That's what you think. In fact, each UPC is scanned, these mail-ins are primarily a way for Hasbro to determined what folks are buying, and who is buying what...that's why there's  "collector, parent, child" check box on the form.

I made that up.  ;)

I say BS. One summer I worked at a place that processes mail in rebates. We pretty much accepted any UPC as long as it looked like it came from one of our products. We never scanned them or even checked a box in a computer that we received them. It was more important to get the check processed and the addressed entered in to the computer.

Besides, they already cashed my check and I sent them random UPCs that I didn't use from the last mail in. That is just bad customer service to complain the wrong UPCs were sent.

And how long ago was that?  Companies have made major advances in the way they collect and utilize data in just the last 3-5 years.  I would not be remotely surprised to find that they are scanning these UPCs and attaching them to your name and address to build a database from.

That said, I think you could probably get away with an older assortment or two, like the BAF or white carded Legends/CW.  These are still for sale at smaller retailers - I just saw a couple of cases of BAF at my local Cub Foods a week or two ago.  The average Joe doesn't know what assortment to use, and is Hasbro really going to turn down your check and risk pissing off a loyal consumer/bad PR?

I have some BAF UPCs, so I'm going to test it out.  Unfortunately we won't know the results until I see a cashed check or some notification that my request was refused.

I agree. The mom or dad buying the figures is not going to know the difference between these UPCs. They are just going to send whatever they have. A Star Wars figure is a Star Wars figure. Most non collectors don't know the difference. Hasbro is never going to turn down a good check.

Besides, my check was cashed yesterday. I remember one of them was a Princess Leia medical frigate and I sent them the original printed out form. They got to honor it.

I also don't think they would scan in every upc. It takes time and money to do this and yields no useful data. I mean if they did scan in all of those they would know that a tiny portion of the public bought a certain figure and happen to send them a upc instead of trashing it like the majority of toy buyers do. It doesn't make financial sense. They would lose money scanning those things with no real data gain. We are just paranoid enough to believe they would do such things. If you sent in something that looks completely different from what they are expecting they might reject it but the UPC between legacy and vintage look almost exactly the same.

I actually work in a research dept. And could use that data a dozen different ways.  They can link your location toyour collector or kid status and find out if collectors are buying just vintage or legends and ca and to what degree.  How many kids are buying vintage?  Does it say parent on it?  That would tell them what lines and quantity parents buy vs kids.  How many of each line gets redeemed during a contest to assign incrementality?  Companies pay for research like that...if they could collect it themselves thru something like this so much the better.

What Jman said about "How long ago was this?" was going to be my reply Paul...  I'm guessing this was a while ago and assume you're around my age or maybe a little older?

The USPS wasn't using these (or at least the same efficiency level) scanners when I was young either, and mail still came "unprocessed" to a lot of facilities where hand-sorting was still order of the day.  The scanners are very simple, and inexpensive (for what they do) in a way, and also can replace many employees that handle things like this.  I'd imagine big companies that do this stuff would invest in similar machines if it saves them anything, but who knows.  It's amazing what machines can do though, and I could easily see this be an automated thing anymore at these companies rather than an assembly line type deal.

I sent in Vinty's only so that's all I know.  I should be good on my first one and know what to send in for the 2nd.

It was a long time ago when I did that kind of thing. I guess technology has changed. I just don't see the benefit of each individual UPC. I see what they can do with the check boxes but the UPC I'm unconvinced.

The company that I worked for was kind of scam-type business. We ran a supermarket game. People would answer triva questions and send in a dollar to enter the contest. They would also include marketing information for us. We would grade the answers and send them another round with more triva questions. The processing fee would increase with each new game. If they got a question wrong, they were disqulified from winning but we never told them they were wrong. We just kept sending the next level of the game. The person that could answer all the questions correctly by end of ten rounds won. Very boiler room type operation. It payed well though.

I think you guys can stop arguing about this since Phruby has said twice that they've cashed his check already.  It would be illegal for them to cash his check and then not honor the mail-a-way.

I think the debate had turned to whether or not they are scanning UPCs, not whether or not Phruby is going to get his mail-away.   ;)

So no more online order forms apparently.  :(  It's now saying "in-pack form required". You can print "sample forms"...which is like pointless. I guess Hasbro got swamped or greed took over.

I only printed out the early "incorrect" form.  :-\ Gives me an excuse to buy something new, yeah, that's it.

Hasbro shenanigans.  I'm not going to even order one - anyone else thats displeased, I recommend you do the same.  Hasbro doesnt take our dissatisfaction to heart unless we stop spending money.

I'm still going to order one.  (or 4 if I can).  Its unfortunate the way things have worked out on this, but nobody's perfect.  Frankly, I'm shocked that anyone at Hasbro is displeased with the UPCs/forms coming in.  They're still getting $8 direct for each figure, so I would assume they are profiting or at least breaking even on every check that comes in the door.  The unfortunate thing will be if 90% of the supply is gone before anyone sees an official form.  ::)

I've never had a problem getting order forms, so I'm not particularly upset by this, but I'd prefer ordering it with the print-out forms as an option at least since it will take a while to see these around me.  It is, ultimately, a gimmick to get you to buy **** though.

I'm just still pissed off that it was most likely ignorant collectors that were mind ****** by the word "all" on the initial form, even with 3 years and 6 offers worth of precedent on how this worked, that ruined it for the rest of us.  Since the word "all" was on the form, people went nuts and were asking about Battle Packs, Comic Packs and things like that.  They should have just used any single carded UPC code they had and played dumb.

Either Hasbro and the fulfillment company would have noticed all the old UPC codes on their own and adjusted the form online or they would have just blindly accepted them.  Either way, we would have won this round.  Now that Hasbro has gone as far as first adjusting the online form to specify assortment numbers and then changing it to read sample only just tells me that future mail-away programs are going to be tighter.

I don't know if we'll go back to having to include store receipts with our UPC codes or not, but you can bet that they'll at least make sure all forms have specific information on acceptable assortments from now on.

Yup, greed's a big factor in this I think.  There are people still hanging onto JM Points in anger.  I know a couple guys doing that, and I bet some went that route.  And then pointing things out to Hasbro is definitely silly.  Do people really not have anything new to use, and needed to ask?  Seriously?

If needed, you can still download the un-watermarked form (http://www.hasbro.com/starwars/en_US/discover/news/loader.cfm?csModule=security/getfile&pageid=2392) that is buried in their site. I'm sure it'll only be a matter of time until someone calls Hasbro and narks to them about this too.  ::) :P
Title: Re: The 2011 Mail-In Prototype Armor Boba Fett
Post by: JediJman on September 19, 2011, 02:04 PM
Personally, I'm just upset that I procrastinated on this.  Sounds like the people that got in there right away will still get their Fetts.  I had the forms printed off and UPCs cut out when the form was first posted, but sat on them because I didn't have envelopes handy right when I was putting things together.  Stinks that I'll now have to wait unti ___? to find an actual form somewhere.  I can get the UPCs I need and would be buying up the next waves of CW and Vintage anyway, so it's disappointing that I have to wait now to find the figures in store before sending anything in.

So I printed off the redemption form before they put up that new restriction of having to get the form with a figure. This was a week an a half ago now.  I filled it out and mailed it immediately. So do we know if they will still honor that or am I going to get it returned to me.  Anybody know for sure or is it just a wait and see thing?

My check was cashed last week, so who knows what will actually wind up happening.  I haven't even seen anything from wave 7 show up (and none of that "You're just not looking frequently enough" as I'm in these places every day and there aren't even remnants of the case; stuff is just not shipping to retail PERIOD), so I don't know if the wave with the actual labels/forms will even show up before the offer expires.  Typical Hasbro, though, to change the requirements several times after people have placed their orders.  At this point, I fully expect them to say they will only accept payment in the form of seashells and you have to send 5 hands (one from each action figure) in order to get the Fett.

On a semi-related note, I was able to order a Sideshow exclusive edition 12" Boba Fett on Friday within three minutes of logging on to Sideshow's site.  No issues putting anything in my cart, no issues checking out, and no issues with late email confirmations or confusion.  And especially no issues with a slow site or "underestimated demand."  Not directly related to the mail-away Fett, but it bears repeating that some companies obviously know how to handle online transactions.

Sure, but the difference here is that Sideshow is a massive company with loads of resources.  They have the manpower and financing to make sure their online ordering works correctly.  A much smaller company like Hasbro with a limited fan base can hardly be expected to have similar capabilities for online purchasing.

Er, wait...

Yeah, based on what that says, the non-watermarked downloaded redemption forms (version 1 or version 2) or the in-pack redemption form are OK.

You can't use the current one on their site (version 3), which is the one with "SAMPLE ONLY: IN-PACK FORM REQUIRED" stamped across it.

$$$ Mando Army for hire. I am keeping 2. I buy a lot of figures for my collection and customs. 54 are EP2 Clones alone with 40 from Sandtroopers. Quite easily.

Here is the shot of the rear of the figure, he is very nice. I really like this one, one of the better Mail Aways.

That's sweet.  I agree with JACK, I think this may be one of the cooler main-aways.  I like it much more than the rocket firing figure.  The only way I'd dig it more is if the rocket were removable.  I really would like to see that feature on all Mando's these days.

I could've easily had 200 UPC's to send in too so I don't doubt having that much stuff.  Between army building and stuff, it's pretty easy.  I've cut back a lot though, but yeah, I can see it.

That's a lot of $6.99 S/H charges though.

Do you just send them one package with a check  for all the figures or do you send these off individually?  I have always sent individual envelopes and checks, but would be nice to save a buck or two on postage.

I sent 1 check, 1 order form, 1 Bag O' UPC's for 24 in a padded yellow envelope for my first order the day they offered the form. I got the case and an extra box of 4.

Waiting for the other 16. I sent them a week apart the exact same way. I am out of UPC's right now.

I planned way ahead for this and my intent was to flip them as fast as I can upon arrival. FYI - I got a lot of hate mail for selling them on eBay. Some people may call it scalping but I really do not give a rats ass, it means nothing to me. I made and took the risk on the investment and sold them openly in an honest setting on eBay, no one had to buy them. Some guys are charging $15 to ship them, that's robbery if you ask me. The first 22 I sold paid for my Vintage figures I purchased this year so the haters can throw all the stones they want. (BTW, my rant is not directed at anyone here, a bunch of scummers sent me some) The rest is gravy once I get the other 16. I am at a point if guys hate me for being smart about making the hobby pay for itself I will just stare at my collection with a wide smile and not think twice.

Once again, he is a great figure, mail away for him, pay $6.99 and have some patience. ;)

There is no winning with some people in the collecting community. I really don't understand the hate. Everyone has an equal chance of getting a White Boba (or 40) so I don't understand why people are bitching about you selling them on eBay. You didn't make the toy any more scarce, you didn't deprive anyone of the chance to pick one up, and it can be argued that you're selling them for below cost. The mail-away figures are definitely a different animal than the normal single figures, and IMO can't be fit into the whole "scalping" thing. I'm glad you were able to make the promotion work for you.

I couldn't agree more.  I think some people have a philosophy that you should never make money off a collectible.  While  I don't really agree with snatching up hoardes of new figures at retail and selling them for 2x the price on a collectible site, I think people should be responsible enough to buy and sell at whatever price they want.  Why should anyone else be involved in what two people consent to for a price?  It's a little ridiculous to say that we should continuously shell out more and more money on annual mark-ups or pay 2-3x the regular price for exclusive figures, but on the flip side the collector should never ever make a few bucks if he decides to invest in extras or something he purchased ends up being more rare.  It's okay for multi-million dollar companies to make a few extra bucks, but not Joe Collector?

I also think people forget that this kind of behavior can actually help other collectors.  Some people are willing to pay more for help tracking things down.  I don't know how much you're asking, but let's say I don't open figures and can't get UPCs or a form without buying extra figures.  Assuming I could find the form, I'm out $50 in extra figures plus $7 to order the Fett.  If I were in that scenario, an offer from someone to ship it to me for $25 would really be appealing.  I've seen lots of people recommend buying figures by the case to ensure they get "rare" or "new" figures.  That could end up costing you $15 per figure instead of $10 or less...so, why is it okay to spend above retail if you're paying a company versus a collector?

I get that the site is privately owned and I respect the desire to keep it scalper free - I really do.  I just think there are a lot of mixed messages here on gray areas.  Condoning a behavior you don't agree with, but telling people to just keep it quiet to save your appearance is really less respectable than banning higher prices all together.  I guess I'd rather see someone stand up for an opinion I totally disagree with than to tell me it's okay if I do something - just do it under the table.   :-\

Always an interesting topic, couple of quick points:

1) RE: Selling on eBay versus scalping. I think the key thing here is the initial listing price. If you list the figure for more or less what it cost you, and let the bidding determine the value that's just free market economics, not gouging. If you were to list something for double or triple what it cost you, plus shipping etc, then that is sort of crossing the line into scalper territory IMO. For mail-away stuff it can be hard to determine what the initial value should be though, given the UPC aspect. So I think there can be some leeway there.

2) The only possible criticism I could see with some validity is that the mail-aways are limited edition items with a finite production run, so in theory buying them up in bulk could reduce the likelihood of an individual from sending in and getting their form redeemed. Not really sure where I come out on that.

3) I think it's the height of hypocrisy for any site, not singling anyone out honestly, to complain about "scalping" whatsoever when they have sponsors like Brian's Toys and other Dbag sites that were selling the SDCC sets for jacked up prices and things like that. Those guys are WAY worse than any individual scalpers roaming around out there, IMO. They have taken it to a whole new level. Just because they pay for advertising does not absolve them of the moral implications of what they are doing. They're scalping, plain and simple.

I don't have a problem with this stuff for the most part, there can be a good deal of grey area involved.

I would agree that the "while supplies last" stipulation presents the idea of limited quantities, but for the past several promotions Hasbro has done additional runs on the toys to meet demand. I can't think of any instances where someone's check was returned due to a lack of figures. Hasbro would ever make an infinite supply of any mail away, but precedent has established that they will produce more to meet demand, especially if the promotion hasn't expired.

I sent 1 check, 1 order form, 1 Bag O' UPC's for 24 in a padded yellow envelope for my first order the day they offered the form. I got the case and an extra box of 4.

Wow - so that does work?

Did you include a letter or anything else with it indicating that you were bulk ordering 24? Or do you think they just figured it out based on the 120 UPCs and the check for $167.76?

I have only one "real" form now and I want ten of these - I already have my 50 UPCs, it would be great if I could just use the one form I have now...

This is news to me as well.  I only ordered two, but filled out two forms, envelopes, checks, and used 2 stamps.  Definitely worth combining it all into one package in the future!  Thanks JOT!

I received three of the four I ordered today (the fourth was mailed in a couple of days later so I should receive that one in the next few days).

The figures are well packed in the mailers and thencards are nice and unpunched.

The figure itself is really nice and looks good with the rest of the mandos in my collection.

I received mine today as well- despite not being double boxed like the rocket fett, the one I opened appeared to have held up well. The cardboard insert that wraps around the bubble was a good idea-
The gray does seem a bit dark, but I like the look. Nice figure, and I love mail-aways- it sure beats the store distribution system.  Thanks Hasbro!

I've been waiting on sending out for one of these for a friend.  I had 4 UPCs from Vintage figures here and was waiting for the new stuff for the next UPC.  I picked up a Phase II Clone and threw in that UPC to get to 5.  They cashed my check.  I don't think sending in 5 from the new stuff would be a problem.

The only thing with the forms here, for the last little while anyway, was a couple Keyan Farlanders at K-Mart...

I had a good stream of stuff for a while, but that dried up fast.

I think this may honestly be one of the first times a mail-away figure was actually hard(er) to get for many folks.  The UPC's were available, but the forms were not.  What was it, like 3 waves that had the forms?  7, 8, and 9?  And out of them, only 8 was ultimately easy for anyoen to get and it was all recards, and even then 8 was only easy to get speaking relatively.  Figures like the TIE Pilot and stuff were still rougher finds.

No more so than buying 100 Stormtroopers or something...

I got an "army" of the Fett's to have like a Mandalorian squad behind my Boba and Jango figures.  Like they're a team they call up for something.  I'm going to probably shave the wookiee braids off the "team".  Don't know if I'll hang onto all of mine or not though.  Probably will though.

Excessive is definately a tough word to toss around on a website with dozens of individuals with thousands of figures!
If Hasbro wanted to put a limit on them, they sure could have as they have in the past (5 per household or whatever).
At least with the mail away, it's not leaving anyone in the cold like army building at retail. I don't blame anyone that does it, because we all have our desires for what our collection looks like. I was a big army builder for a long time, but that takes figures off the shelves for others (and is nearly impossible in an age of 1 figure per case, sometimes in only one assortment).

I haven't heard of anyone not getting a Fett, or getting one of the dreaded "unavailble" post cards that have been part of some mail-aways.

With the mail away, all anyone had to do was send in the $7 and some cardboard. I wish they would make more army builders available that way- Rebel fleet trooper, gamorrean, imperial commander, good stormtroopers,  etc.

I got a postcard in the mail today regarding my Boba Fetts:

Quote
We have received your redemption request for the Boba Fett Prototype Armor collectible figure - thank you!  This promotion was extremely popular - so much so that Hasbro has to make more figures to fulfill all the orders.  As such, there will be a delay in receiving your figure(s).  Your order is scheduled to ship on July 20, 2012.

It goes on to say I can cancel if I want.  Jeez, I thought for sure this would be a way I could get a new figure sometime before January (which is when I found the TPM wave).  Ugh.

They truly do make a sweet little Mando Merc squad behind Boba...  Dunno why I like them for that, but they're cool.  I will say though, you almost need to shave off the wookiee scalps.  I figure not all Mando's have those.  They shave off very easily though.

Mine showed up as well today.  I was very impressed by the cardboard insert that filled up the "negative" space.  Very well done.

I wholeheartedly agree, and am actually glad I got my order for 3 in a little late so I didn't wind up with one of those earlier smashed boxes like others did.  Despite the nice package, and minty boxes mine showed up in, all three of the cards were actually a little dinged in at the top left edge - weird.  No biggie really, since they're probably all getting opened anyway.  Cool figure though, which bums me out even more that we're not getting anymore mailaway offers in the near future.

I think I got the last of mine today, and they combined them in to a larger box. The upside is they are in perfect boxes with no labels. The downside is I had filled some of those last forms out with my wife's name, my daughter's name, and even the dog's. I was looking forward to the little collection of personalized fett boxes. I guess the mando army grows some more-

Just in case Hasbro is reading:

# 1- Thanks, love these

# 2- I am more inclined to buy extra figures in the future if there is a mail away. Not for extra droid parts.

All five of mine came today; probably would have gotten here last week, but we were out of town and had a hold put on the mail.  They're neat.
