Title: What do you buy at the Movie Snack Counter?
Post by: Scott on August 15, 2003, 11:15 AM
Me and the Mrs usually split what is called the single feature which is a Medium Popcorn (no butter) and a Large Pop.  This is usually a Sprite/Hi-C mix.  If we do get candy it usually Dots which I am not a huge fan of or Junior Mints which I am a huge fan of ;)

I somehow manage to get the same thing every single time I go to the movies:

-A medium popcorn (with butter, of course)
-A medium Pepsi
-A bag of Reese's Pieces

Oh, and I never finish the Reese's Pieces. :P

Soda (usually Coke / Pepsi, sometimes Mountain Dew) and popcorn with lots of butter.  If I get candy, which is not often, its usually Twizzlers or Sour Patch Kids.

Only popcporn.  Usually smuggle all my goodies in.  That way I have some of my paycheck left over :)  It drives me nuts that I have to pay $5-6 for about a dime worth of corn.  Must be one of the highest markups in history.

I buy. . .  nada.  First, those snacks are waaaaaaay over-priced.  I'm a cheap bastard, and the tickets alone are expensive enough as it is.

Secondly, I get annoyed with all of the rude drink-slurpers and popcorn-smackers making all kinds of noise during the flick, so I'd be a hypocrite if I were to do it myself.

Plus, I don't want anything to get in the way of my enjoyment of or concentration on the movie itself.

Yeah, I'm a real fun guy.

They have Guinness in the theatres up there?

The theatre is approx 30 seconds from my new apartment complex, with a Super Wal Mart kitty corner to that. So, at times, I have been known to run in and grab a bag of their $2 Peanut Butter Cups.

I don't know about you guys, but the matinee at my Am Star 14 is $5.
Sad thing is, a large popcorn is about the same price.

Believe it or not, but a short time ago in the news, they were talking about serving alcohol in the movie theaters. Seems this is being brought up in city council for approvel.  :-\

Oh yeah, alcohol will really help with the clowns that can't figure out they aren't in their own living room ::)

STFU already.  Please. >:(

Ahem.

Yep, Popcorn and a drink.  Dr. Pepper (sorely wish they had diet DP) or Mountain Dew.  It it's a snack, I opt for the twizzlers as well, but don't usually do so because it annoys me when people do the plastic crinkle routine.  What would be so wrong with taking ALL of the licorice out of the bag before the movie starts and putting it on a knapkin on your leg?  Maybe Virex and I should go to a movie together and do the postal dance ;)  I can handle the popcorn crunching and drink slurping.  But candy wrappers don't work so well for me >:(

Personality type:  A; wound too tight.

Yep, us too Jim!  Patty and I smuggle EVERYTHING in there (in her oversized purse)!  No way in hell I'm paying $4 for a stinkin' soda or a box of candy, or $6 for some popcorn.  Funk dat!

We'll take a couple cans of soda in, plus some of our massive stash of movie candy that we stock up on at Target whenever they have their movie candy sales.  $0.75 for a giant box of Dots (my candy of choice), or Junior Mints/Milk Duds/Hot Tamales for the Mrs.  Then we'll also bring along a zip-lock full of scrumpious Red Vines as well.  Of course by the time we leave the movie I'm about to throw up, but it's all good!   8)

Large popcorn
Large Dr. Pepper
Box of snow caps

Sometime I get Nachos too  :P

My current diet consists mainly of Diet Dr. Pepper, Frankenberry ;D and red vines.  That is the best licorice in the world.  We're just about out of the 4 lb tub so I'm sending Mrs. Bug to Grand Forks tomorrow ;)  She can buy whatever she wants so long as I get my vines.

We used to smuggle stuff in, but unbelievably my wife was almost thrown out of the theater for bringing in popcorn.  She made the mistake of cracking it out before the movie started and an overzealous (or just doing their job) employee snagged a manager and brought him in to confiscate the "contraband".  Worse, they were going to throw it out rather than hold it until the end of the movie.  PO'd the missus something fierce.  I don't think she remembers anything about that movie, the steam coming out of her ears impeded her view.

I've learned to sneak a complete dinner with me to the movies, which consists of a T-bone, baked potato, dinner roll, and dessert (one Snickers bar).  I mean, a whole 1.5 - 2 hours of not eating or snacking is ridiculous.

Usually, I smuggle my candy in, unless I don't have time to stop by the local grocery store.

At the theater, I get a Medium Popcorn (with butter), a Medium Lemonade (And I am ALWAYS asked if I want to make it a large for a quarter. A guy once told me that they are forced to ask that, though), and I get Reese's Pieces for candy.

 :)

I usually buy a sode (diet Coke) and smuggle the rest in, candy.  My candy choices are Sour Punch Straws, SSour Patch Kids, and sometimes SOur Patch Kids Watermelons.

Yeah, you know, after I made that post, I remembered that I went to a little indie theatre in Dallas (the Magnolia) last year that had a bar in it, too.

It's just that, here in Oklahoma City, we don't have any theatres like that (none that I know of, anyway), and all of my theatre-going is usually done at an AMC or a Cinemark theatre, where they obviously don't have any booze.

For shame. . .

And anyway, to hit on another point:  Remind me never to go to the movies with any of you people--ever.  Except maybe Morgbug.  He seems good like that.

I always get a large popcorn with no butter and a large diet coke.  I don't mind paying the high price for popcorn/pop, because that's something you must have when watching any movie.  But, I refuse to spend $4-5 on a little box of candy.  If I think I'm going to want some candy I'll just stop at Target and pick up a huge bag of candy for something like $2 (sometimes less).

I get a medium Coke (damn theaters don't offer Pibb >:( ) and a ridiculously small bag of Reese's Pieces that usually end up thrown at punk kids talking during a movie I paid a lot of money to see.
Small wonder DVDs and home theaters sell so well.

My girlfriend is a fan of buying those big plastic cups that you can get refilled for 1.50 at theater chains (she has quite a few of them).  So drinks are cheaper if you actually remember to bring the cup.

Candy, I try to buy beforehand if I want it for some reason. I've snuck sodas in a few times, but I like fountain soda better than bottled or canned, so I don't mind paying for the 4 dollar cup if I have to.

I actually don't get popcorn much, usually because I see movies in the evening when I'm either planning on or have just been to dinner.

True that. I don't think I've gone to see a flick since Pirates of the Carribean because of the reasons I mentioned above. Also I really loathe people who sit directly behind me in a nearly empty theater and kick my seat when they move around because their larda$$ fell asleep. Not to mention the talking. Grrr. Arrgh.

I just wait for most movies I want to see to come out on DVD. I can watch them at my leisure without annoyances and with plenty of beer, pizza, and Dr. Pepper ripoffs.

For me it really takes alot ot get me into the theatre (JP, SW, LOTR, Slasher Films) but when I do go to a theatre, I buy a drink, and nachos.

When I go to the drive-in theatre, we always sneak in food...its a hella lot easyer and cheaper than paying $2.50 for a pizza roll smaller than your standard egg roll...good god...how can they charge that.

If your going to a theatre with free refils on stuff, keep the containers, like the bag for next time. I figure for the 11.00 they charge they can afford to give me my free refils. Whenever I want.

My usual routine visit to the snack bar consists of picking up one of those giant pickles(the more sour the better) a large Dr.Pepper or Mr. Pibb and nachos or popcorn with extra butter.I'm not much for candy but every so often I will get twizzlers if the need hits. The prices are highway robbery but I dont get the chance to go to the movies much so I take full advantage. :P

If I go by myself I don't get anything, since I'm too cheap, or I smuggle something in (candy or granola bars). I think I got a nachos once.

On the rare occassions I go with my dad (neither of my parents are real big on the whole theatrical thang) and he pays for it ;), we usually each get a pop and a popcorn or split a popcorn, and/or smuggle something in.

When I infrequently get theater candy, it's typically Raisinets or Milk Duds.

We smuggle if we have time to stop somewhere beforehand, but usually we're in enough of a hurry that we don't fool with it.   Theme parks though. . we're big time food smugglers there.

Even if we do smuggle, my wife just doesn't enjoy a movie the same without a popcorn.  If I buy theater candy, it's usually Raisinettes lately. Used to be Jr. Mints.

This past trip to see ROTS, I taught my wife a beautiful secret that my coworkers and i developed when I worked a at a theater in high school and college.  Raisinettes mixed with popcorn.  Y.  U.  M.   Big mistake showing her. . .she ate my Raisinettes.  :(.    So I was telling her how we developed this recipe at the theater where I'd worked, and then I notice that it's suggested on the back of Raisinettes box!!!  Wow.  I wonder if someone from the Regal Cinemas in Chattanooga wound up in marketing at Nestle.  Not likely.

Other smuggling I've seen. . . we used to have people who could get a whole meal in.  KFC buckets with all the side dishes. . .biscuits, mashed potatoes, green beans.  And lots of people would have pizza's delivered to the fire doors.  Lot's of very large, very empty liquor bottles left behind too.

Last time it was Raisinettes...  I don't usually buy candy at the theatre, but they were good...
At the Plano DLP theatre they sell pizzas, hamburgers, etc. and you can eat in the theatre.  Luckily the house quit smelling of pizza before ROTS started.

Oh wow, what an idea!!! I would love to get a pizza ordered to the theatre!!! And where would they pull out the bucket o Chicken from????

Oh and funny how she ate your Raisinettes!!!  :P

As for me, I usually don't buy food there. At least now I don't, it's too damn expensive!!! When I had a good job, and I would take my mom, sure, but by myself or with friends, forget it!!! Oh and another reason is I don't like getting up to use the RR, so I try not to eat anything in the theatre or before!!!

I usually just go with the popcorn and either Sprite or Cherry Coke.  I like to smuggle in M@Ms to dump into the popcorn tub.  The melted chocolate with the salty popcorn make for good eating.
I remember one local theatre used to serve Taco Bell food.  I haven't been by the place in a few years, so I'm not sure if they still do that.  I always thought that was pretty interesting.

I'm a cheap bastard, so I don't get anything at the snack counter.  Even though I understand that this is how movie theaters make their money (they get very little income based on the box office alone), I simply cannot abide paying 4 dollars for a 16.9 fl oz bottle of lemonade.  Dinner at a nice restaurant costs less than what you'd pay for popcorn, candy, and/or drinks at a movie for two!

But honestly, all she has to do is ask, and it's hers.  I'm a sucker for doe eyes.   :-*

I get a large Diet Coke or Diet Dr. Pepper if they have it and then split a popcorn with the hubby.  I used to go to the Cinema & Draft House when I lived in Alexandria, VA.  They'd show 2nd run movies and Redskin's games.  They had tables and oversized leather chairs that swivled and the waitresses would bring the food and beer to you.  My husband and I were just talking last night about how cool it would be to have a Saga weekend there -- see all 6 movies while someone brings you pizza, beer, wings, etc............ ;D  Not sure if they have one in Charlotte :'(

It's weird -

During the summer, for those big blockbuster type movies - Revenge of the Sith, Batman Begins, etc - the Mrs. and I almost always get a medium tub of popcorn (no fake buttery topping) and a medium drink (pink lemonade) to share.  The exceptions being if we have just had dinner before the show.

Yet, when we go to movies in the winter - Lord of the Rings, Harry Potter, etc - we usually just skip the snacks all together.

Maybe there is something about the summertime that makes us crave the popcorn while the wintry days of Minnesota cause us to forego the movie treats?   :-\

I typically smuggle in an 8.5 oz energy drink. It fits in the pocket, and I don't have to piss so badly after the movie.

I realize concessions are the way theaters make money, but they're just too expensive.

I realize concessions are the way theaters make money, but they're just too expensive.

I agree with you.  The theater here in Ithaca, NY kind of sucks.  Small seats, mediocre screens and terrible sound.  $8.75 for a movie (it's $6 and change for a matinee).

This summer I went to the movies to see something and I went by myself.  I had  a craving for popcorn so I ordered a medium tub and a bottled water...$9.50.  I almost **** myself.  I was pissed.  Walked into the theater and in less than 5 minute dropped $20.

That was the first time in 4 years I'd bought anything from the concession stand and, needless to say, it's the last time I ever will.

Yeah, I'm a real fun guy.

Nearly four years later, and I still hold true to this policy.  I think the last time I actually bought something at the movie theatre was a giant Coke, back when Spidey 2 came out--and that was only because I was on no sleep (no sleep!) and needed something to keep me awake.

But I think next time I go see a flick (Spidey 3, to bring it full-circle, maybe?), I'm gonna take all kinds of stuff in there, to nosh on.  I'm thinking maybe a big-ass bucket of KFC, with all the fixin's, or perhaps a half-rack of barbeque ribs or something.  The messier, the noisier, the more-disruptive to my fellow movie-goers, the better.

If only I could figure out some way to have a pizza delivered during the movie. . .  That would be the best.

I went to see 300 and the regular littany of people pulling licorice out of a bag just about drives me nuts, never mind the non-stop verbal commentary people seem inclined to provide.  I don't give a **** about what you think, you're a moron, so shut the **** up.   >:(

Eh, what are you going to do?

Americans love to eat and will take every opportunity they can to do so.

I don't mind if people smuggle a snack or two into a movie (hell, I do it) but the difference between myself and them is that I try to be quiet about opening my Skittles.

Maybe I'm Canadian and don't know it?

You don't swear enough to be a Canadian.  Not nearly bitter enough.  Yet.

And I don't care if people eat, all I'm after is a little more thought than just me hungry, you matter not type of Walmart mentality.  A hint of consideration is all I ask.  Otherwise I'll just follow you to your car, write down your license plate number and put nails around your tires the next time I see your car.   ;)

If you did that behind me I'd probably go postal and murder you with a drumstick.  Seriously.

Nah, I'd sit in front.

Well that is a different story.  Sound tends to go forward but if you were still annoying and in front of me, I could just kick you in the head until you bled to death.  See, I'm open to compromise. :)

Depends on if I am with my best buddy Kaye and back in Esky, then I get nacho's and extra cheese with a Dew and Kaye gets the popcorn.   It's only .25 for a refill on pop or popcorn, so we go back twice. (We usually go early enough to eat our snacks before the movie starts and quickly refill for opening credits).
If I am with my kids, we bring our own snacks (I've already paid a fortune to get in!!)
If I am with the hubby, he HAS to have popcorn and pop...no way around it - he just can't go see a movie without a popcorn and pop.  Since Chillicothe charges the most insane prices you could imagine (they don't even post the price, but it's $7 bucks for a small popcorn and pop), Jay only buys for himself, I have already smuggled in my Sugar Babies.

I like to have popcorn, no butter, when I go to the movies, but I can live without it.  The problem is, if I get popcorn, then I have to have a Diet Coke, then I'll never make it through the whole movie without taking a potty break.

I have already smuggled in my Sugar Babies.

I usually just through on a big, baggy sweater -- Colman style -- and I can smuggle my Sugar Babies anywhere ;)

I used to buy popcorn and a soda, but now everything's just way too expensive. I usually sneak in a bottle of water. If I get free movie passes somehow, then I might buy a snack pack.

I try to avoid buying Theatre refreshments, but when I do, it's usually a hot dog, small pop corn and a small drink.

When I actually do get to see a movie, my wife and I have usually eaten dinner before so we're not hungry.  Sometimes though, we may buy a drink and popcorn that we share, or on rare occasions, we'll buy candy.

But, the stuff is so expensive for two drinks and two packs of candy that it's hardly worth it.

With Spider-Man 3 coming out tonight/tomorrow, and it being one of the few movies this summer I'll go to the conventional theater and not the Drive-In, I saw this thread, and I think the only snacks I'll be buying from the Movie Counter will be some nachos to munch on in line. Any other snacks I'll be buying at the counter at CVS next door, in the mall.

Now, when I go to the Drive-In theater, I usually grill hamburgers and make them up before I arrive, bring a 12 pack of soda, and some other random snacks to share with my friends who come along. I love the Drive-In.

My girlfriend usually wants goobers. I am happy with just popcorn.

She wants to swap spit with you in a darkened theater and you're happy with just popcorn?? ;)

I usually like a popcorn, soda, and Junior Mints. Mints and popcorn taste good for some reason.

HAHA, we have been going out too long to be making out in a theater, but its nice to think back on the good old times. Besides movie ticket prices are too expensive to waste, better to just wait til I'm back home  :-X

I'm planning to go see Spidey 3 on Saturday.  Coincidentally, that's also Cinco de Mayo, so what better way to celebrate than by munching on a bunch of Mexican food?  I'm planning to make a fiesta out of it.  Nachos, quesadillas, enchiladas, tacos, burritos, chips and salsa. . .  the works.  Probably a case of Corona, maybe even some tasty margaritas, too, provided I can find a theatre with a plug-in for the blender.  It's gonna be the best, seriously.  Except maybe for all the people around me, but--then again--who really gives a **** about what they think, anyway?

I don't know what I'd do if I had to go a whole two hours without eating something.

Sounds like a party. Who needs a power outlet? Just get one of these puppies (http://www.shop.com/op/~Portable_Blender_in_Black_850_860-prod-42983191-56791872?sourceid=298) and go at it. You may even have time for some strawberry margaritas as well.

I don't know what I'd do if I had to go a whole two hours without eating something.

I find crying helps. Then I'll usually get on my cell phone (in the theater of course, I don't want to miss the movie) and call home just to make sure dinner will be ready when the movie is over.

Updating my post from 2005, I'm down to once a year with my small or medium popcorn.  It's just enough to remind me why I don't buy **** from the concession stand.

That the word concession is in the name should tell you all you need to know about eating that filth.

Either Popcorn w/TONS of butter or Nachos. With either I needs a Diet Coke to wash it down but thanks to having the bladder of a small child I need to get the small soda or it's bathroom breaks galore...

Damn, this thread is making me HUNGRY!  :P
