Another item confirmed at Toy Fair this afternoon -
Entertainment Earth exclusive R5-D4.
I'm not sure if it's boxed or 40th carded or what, still trying to catch up from being away from the computer all day. :P
-
I believe it is 40th carded also based on the photos I saw. Looked pretty cool!
-
Saw Yakface reporting that this is actually a GameStop/ThinkGeek exclusive and not an EE item...
-
Not surprised about this clarification in the exclusive partner since Adam tweeted some degree of surprise about this being an EE exclusive during the presentation.
Plus, Gamestop has really turned into a fairly reliable destination for the 6" Black Series over the past few months. I'll be interested to see how they handle this exclusive.
-
Never been to a GameStop in my life. It appears there are quite a few around though.
Anybody have experience with them getting any other non-SW exclusives?
-
I don't usually go there, but they had a midnight opening for some SW figures once or twice in the past IIRC. It was a pretty easy in and out, though I'm sure each release is different. They're in strip malls everywhere around here, so you shouldn't have any trouble finding one. I actually stopped by the GS off Penn this weekend in the hopes of finding some 6" Black Series. Passed on 3 6" Ersos, but I did find a 3.75" Scarif/Morrif 2pk for $10 and a Marvel Universe original Iron man for just $2. The best deal was an Endor Rebel camo backpack with all kinds of cool accents and pockets. Normally $50, it was marked down to 12.50. I was tempted to keep it for myself, but my son wouldn't let it out of his hands.

This is an odd choice for a store. I know Gamestops are nearly on every corner like Walgreens, or at least anywhere there's a WM or a Target. I hope this is easy to find because the only Star Wars figure I've seen at Gamestop is Finn.
-
Just checking out http://www.thinkgeek.com/star-wars/geek-toys/ (http://www.thinkgeek.com/star-wars/geek-toys/), and they have a pretty decent selection available online. I'd be surprised if they only offer this in the brick & mortar stores.
-
Next to maybe Walgreens, Gamestop is the biggest PITA store for toy hunting, at least in some ways. It's impossible to slip in and out unobtrusively, the sales staff is either aggressive or ignores you completely, their average time per transaction is 200% higher than any other store I've ever been to because of all the upselling they are forced to do, and at least around here they open late and close early compared to other stores.
On the plus side, there are lots of them, you can track store inventories effectively via their website, and they will reserve stuff for you if you ask.

Hasbro (Steve Evans) has stated that 6" R5-D4 will not be available in the standard Black Series box, only on the Vintage 40 cardback.

So does that mean it will be offered at other retailers on the cardback too, or just the exclusive at GameStop?

Just GameStop

Thanks, Jayson.

Some Gamestop news broke a couple of days ago. Gamestop will be closing 150 stores in 2017 (http://fortune.com/2017/03/24/gamestop-set-to-close-stores/). This represents 2 - 3% of their current store locations (about 7500 stores globally), but they will be opening more of their Technology Brand stores as well as 35 new Collectibles stores, which probably translates to new ThinkGeek locations.
-
Preorders are open (http://www.gamestop.com/collectibles/toys/star-wars-the-black-series-40th-anniversary-r5-d4-only-at-gamestop/143216)
-
I checked their website last night and two of my local stores appeared to have this in stock, so I reserved a copy at the closer location and went out and picked it up this morning. ;D
Super nice little figure, but not too much bang for your $24.91 after taxes.
And they put a confounded sticker right on the front of the card!
Btw, they are setting these up in a little shipper like that Target thing from a few weeks back. They also had some Jedha packs and the Wave One vintage carded 6" figures on there.
Happy hunting!
-
I hope they ship the pre-orders soon.

A little annoying that they haven't
-
Grabbed one this morning at my store in Minneapolis and cancelled my pre-order. They also had most of the wave 1 6" 40th anniversary figures out, including a couple Darth Vader with display stand packages.
-
I picked one up at a local GameStop store. But they had it behind the counter.
It was also nice to see some new stock in a store. They also had the Legacy Vader set, albeit for $45. And they also had the Titanium figures for $16.99 each.
-
I'll have to do some driving around I guess. The Gamestop 5 minutes from my place had nothing, and were clearancing out pretty much all of their collectibles.
-
I was told today it was 'probably already sold out or we never had it at all' and I remembered why I never go in Gamestop.
-
Did anyone happen to pick up a spare of these? I had one reserved, but they gave it away before I went to go get it. Now the closest one I can find is at a store an hour away. Gotta love exclusives.
Also, is the figure an exclusive or just the packaging? I'm not so worried if this guy is going to be coming out in the regular packaging later on.
-
I'm in the same boat. Pretty sure I'll never see it here.
Haven't heard any word about him being in the basic line.
-
I think Jayson or Jeff said it will show up in the regular line.

Reminds me of Seinfeld:
"You know how to take the reservation but you do not know how to hold the reservation."
-
Some people on Reddit said the same thing happened to them. Gamestops are selling the preorders and then trying to offer store credit since they have no clue when the figures will be stocked.
-
And that's why you gotta love exclusives. I guess I should just have the mindset that I won't get any exclusives, then be extremely grateful if I'm able to work out some kind of arrangement that doesn't involve selling my kidney or first born child to get one.
You know, rather than just expecting to pay the usual marked up price to order a toy after decades of supporting every figure Hasbro makes.
-

Quite the opposite, actually -

I think that is still the official word on this one...
-
Got it. Misread that one.
-

I'd definitely turn down the store credit. If they don't know when or even if they'll get the product, I'd hate to be stuck with something I don't want or need.
-
I went to another GS today and they had the shipper, but no R5. Didn't know what it was, couldn't help me or themselves to find out but labored very hard for me to buy their overpriced figures. Um, no.
-
I have hit up about a dozen Gamestops in the past 24 hours stocking up on $5 Jyns, and only saw 2 that even had the shipper and R5 was long gone of course. And when I asked if he would be back, they said they didn't know. :P
I'm really glad I pounced on one the first day they hit because this one seems like it might be a royal pain.
-
When I was looking for R5 at my local GameStop they pointed me to two different stores that had them in stock. And when I got to one of those stores? The R5 I got wasn't on the pegs, and the clerk asked if I had a pre-order. I didn't have one, but he gave me an R5 anyway. I really hope I didn't take one that had been reserved for another customer, but GameStop should have some policies in place to make sure those pre-order reservations are fulfilled first.
-
Did pre-ordering to store save shipping?

When I reserved my R5 at the store they sent me a very non-specific e-mail saying "they would hold the item for a period of time". At first I assumed I had 24 hours to get my item, but when I re-read the e-mail it was so non-specific it made me think they could easily put it back out after only a few hours, so I hustled to the store and grabbed it ASAP.
Its the first time I've ever purchased anything from GameStop, or reserved anything from GameStop. That and the challenges I had with cancelling my pre-order lead me to believe its really not a terribly well run place without a lot of controls in place.
So I guess I might sort of feel bad that they gave you someone else's "reserved" item, but it could have been reserved for a week or it could have been reserved for a few minutes, and based on their policies it appears to be first come first served.

To me it was a question "IF" they may have given me someone else's preorder. Based on the fact that people have been posting that GameStop stores haven't honored the pre-orders I have to think that it's a possibility. Especially considering the exchange that I had with the store clerk.

They have definitely changed their preorder policies over the last few years. In the past, they would tell you they hold preorders for 48 hours. But the last preorder I had from them, GTAV in 2013, they sent out an email saying you HAD to pick up your preorder at the midnight release, which was pretty inconvenient.
All of this was well before they started selling collectibles, and given the horror stories so far, it might be easier to just call different stores before going hunting.

I've had a lot of interaction with Gamestop over the last few weeks after not getting in to pick up my R5 in time, then struggling to find one locally. Here's what I found:
- All the stores I called seemed to have gotten 2 R5's in stock. Most sound like they sold out same day
- Across 5-6 stores, everyone I spoke to thought this was the only shipment they were getting
- If you reserve an item on the site, the standard hold is 24 hours, but sounded like they could put it back out at the end of the day if you don't show. It's not any kind of formal hold system. They just have a drawer behind the counter for holds with a post-it note, so it's probably pretty easy to nab someone else's hold items (accidentally or on purpose)
- Gamestop does let you pre-order items for store pickup to save shipping, but I don't know if that was an option for R5. The site says "Not available for Pick Up at Store" on the Battefront II Trooper
-
I stopped by my local Gamestop after work and inquired about the figure. They had no clue what I was talking about, and only knew about the BF2 TIE Pilot. I pulled up the listing on their website, but it wasn't even listed in Gamestop's computer. They told me "it might be some online only thing" and to try that, but the website says unavailable.

It's not available online anymore. If you call around to a few stores, you can likely get someone who can search the area to see if its in stock, then call to have them hold it. The guys on the phone had trouble finding it too - I think they might have to search for "R5-D4" and were missing the dash. I was able to find a few stores to do that locally, though the only store they could find one at is 45 minutes away. Luckily I got help from a local with an extra, but they should be able to find it for you if there's any left where you live.
