Title: Gambling...
Post by: JoshEEE on August 25, 2003, 12:10 PM
I'm planning another trip to Vegas later this year, and thinking about how much I might throw down at the tables this year.

Spawned this obvious question:

What's the most money you've ever lost gambling? (in one trip, or one sitting....your pick).

What's the most you ever won?  (and that means LEFT the city with)

I don't gamble...  I spend/lose enough money on my SW  habit...  I mean collecting. :o

I suppose some Star Wars collecting (that done by the toy "investors") could be considered gambling, but that's not exactly what I was asking.

I'm sure everyone gambles in SOME way.  You haven't even bought lottery tickets or anything?   :)

Vegas! Kaching!  Man, I haven't been back to Vegas since the summer of 1986. I just love playing the dollar slots. The Triple Diamond is my favorite. Most I walked away with was $1000. Most I spent,  :-X

Someday I will go back there & see all the changes that have been made.  8)

Most I've lost to scratch tickets was $10, most I lost in a casino was $2.75.

Whenever I go gambling, I always set a limit (usually $100 - $200)  If I blow it in five minutes, then so be it.  If I can sit at a blackjack table for five hours, even better.  The most I walked away with was close to $400 after sitting at a $25 blackjack table for about 5 hours.

I'm going to Vegas in October for my one year anniversary.  I won't spend the whole time gambling but would definitely like to get a few hours in.

Ok, you guys are making me look like I have a gambling problem.  $2.75  ;D

The most I've ever lost was a little over 300 bucks. That's not counting what I "won" back, or any of the other entertainment expenses on the trip....just cash I lost at the tables.

The most I won was 600.

The most I've ever had in chips on a table at one point or another was 1200 dollars, which was a lot considering it was a 5 dollar table and I started with 200.

I try to never bring more than 300 anytime I go to Vegas, because that's about as much as I'm comfortable throwing away. Any more than that, and I'd probably be mad at myself.

My buddy and I were at one of the local Native American Casinos a long time ago, we were big fans of nickle video poker.  He had won at one point $500 in nickles close to 10,000.  I kept telling cash out, cash out...he said when  I get to 10,000.  Lets just say he walked away from the machine with less than 1 nickle and more than -1 nickle.

I have never been a huge gambler, I love playing poker with the fellas but that is usually with ye olde change bucket.  Casinos are generally too smokey and noisy for my liking.

That's why I don't like slots.

1. There's that temptation to "Play till you lose it" which is just stupid.
2. They've changed most of them to "credits" now, which means no more putting in the quarters and losing them one at a time. Now you press one button and bet like 2.50 on a spin.  That's just lame.

If the table games ever went that way, (sort of like the video machines at the bars) I think I'd stop gambling altogether.

Not to sound like 4-LOSW, but I LOVE gambling!   8)  I'm mostly just a Blackjack, Sports betting, and Video Poker kinda guy though.  I can sit at a Blackjack table for 12 hours straight - easy.

Being here in SoCal, Vegas is only a 4-5 hour jaunt across the desert, and a trip that I've made many, many times - probably over 100x.  I love that city, and if I hadn't met my wife Patty, I would've probably moved out there!  I used to go there at least once a month during about a 5 year span in college.  I had some buddies who went to UNLV out there, so it was always free accomodations.

As for my highs and lows of gambling money, I've probably both won and lost about $500 or so in one sitting of Blackjack, but those were just a few extreme cases.  I'll usually cash out when I'm at +- $100.  I usually only play $10 a hand, but sometimes when I'm feeling rather bold (usually due to the free alcohol), I'll up my bets to the $25 chips.

I'll toss some quarters into the video poker machines when I want to just unwind for a little while - we're talking +- $20 here.  I'll plunk down some fat change at the Sports Books though, and have done quite well betting on NFL and NBA.  That's some fun, though occassionally very frustrating, stuff!  Love the 5-parlays!

Well, I'm starting to twitch now, and am contemplating hopping in my car for the quick trek across the desert, so I better stop discussing my gambling urges here...   :P

I was driving home from Orlando one time, and there was a huge detour on the interstate...

The detour took us right by the Seminole Indian Gambling Casino - so we stopped.

I started with $4.00

I won some slot machine thing and at one point was at $6.00

Needless to say I was rollin'

But, from that point on I was rollin' down hill - I left with nothing.

I learned my lesson, and it only cost me $4.00

I like to gamble once in a while (about two times a year).  The most I have lost on a trip would probally be around $500 or so (Money that I took with me not counting any winnings).  The most I have ever won at one time is propbally around 2 or $300 playing either roullete or Let it Ride my two farvorite games.

I love Vegas and go a couple times a year. I'm a true low-roller, and I'm not comfortable betting more than $2-$3 a hand at blackjack. I prefer a $1 minimum table, of course.  :)

I never win or lose too much, because I don't bet too much per hand, but I sit at the tables for hours on end, drinking for free, and having a grand ol' time. Last trip to Vegas in June, I sat at the Sahara one night for four hours, and drank a bunch, and walked out with $10 less than I walked in with. That's just fine with me.

I've been to Vegas once, and Atlantic City a number of times.  I usually play blackjack, and the occassional machine, and that's it.  Some key tips?

Only gamble money that you can afford to lose.  In fact, think of it as spending money, and that's it.  It's money that you're using for entertainment, and no more.  If you start using money that you might need for something else (hotel, rental car, rent, etc), then you've got a problem.

As for winning and losing...both happen.  The odds favor the house, otherwise they wouldn't be in the casino business.  I've won big and lost big.  There are definitely some rules that you should keep in mind.

-Don't play poker.  Only play poker with people you know.  Otherwise, you could be walking into a setup, where several people could be playing in a cooperative fashion.  If that happens, they could really taje you for a ride.

-If you play blackjack, learn basic strategy.  Also, playing at more expensive tables is usually better.  Why?  Because fewer players means fewer variables in terms of what cards get drawn, and patterns in the cards are a little easier to pick up on.  And finally, in blackjack, if you win a hand, don't stay at the same bet level.  Increase your bet with some of the money you just won in the previous hand.  This is called progressive betting, and will help you win if your luck and the cards hold out.

-One last tip:  if you win, and you've made 10% or more of your bankroll in your winnings:  walk away.  Call it a day, and spend it on a meal, or something nice, and quickly.

That's gambler's 101 according to Nicklab.  Hope I could be of help.

Ok, I'm assuming you were off the strip....but where?

I looked and looked for 5 dollar tables last time I was down there, and I was lucky to find tables with 10 dollar minimum bets.

Where did you find 1 dollar and 2-3 dollar tables???  I need to try those next time, that sounds fun.

That sounds like it might be one of the places on the North end of the strip.  Those are the older places, generally.  Pretty much from the Stratosphere north.

Also, those table rates are probably only in effect on weekdays.  Weekend table rates tend to be higher in Vegas and Atlantic City as a general rule.

Ok, I'm assuming you were off the strip....but where?

I'm assuming Carrie was probably "Downtown" on Fremont Street, which as Nick mentioned is a bit past Stratosphere (probably .5 to 1 mile beyond it).  That's the only place you can find table under $5 anymore, and not even much on the weekends at that.  The general Blackjack table rates have gone up significantly in recent years, especially on the Strip where you'd be lucky to ever find something under a $10 minimum hand.

But like Carrie said, if you can find a cheap table and just sit there and drink for free for several hours while hanging out and having fun with a few friends - it just doesn't get much better, regardless of whether you're winning or losing.  One of my all-time favorite times in Vegas was one time where me and a buddy sat down at a table with just the coolest bunch of people ever (including some great, friendly dealers), all of which really knew their Blackjack.  We probably played for 5-6 hours straight, drinking the whole time.  I had some horrible luck that sitting, and the alchohol probably didn't help my judgement later on in the session, but it was the funnest time I've ever had at a table, despite losing almost $200.

Vegas is about more than just the gambling.  The glitz, glamour, lights, free stuff, late night/early morning hours, loss of all inhibitions, shows, attractions, etc.  Too fun!

Nick's got some good suggestions there as well, for anyone contemplating hitting the tables.  And Josh, I've seen some ads for that Comic Con, and am contemplating trying to get out there for it.  You going?  I'll keep you posted on my status for the event if you are!

I've only spent about $10 on Powerball tickets, when the jackpot gets to be over $100 million. Never hit a single number.

I don't like card games like blackjack, so I avoid them. And I've heard bad tales about the addictiveness of one-armed bandits, so I stay away from casinos. I waste enough scrib on my hobbies.

The Sahara on the far north end of the strip almost always has $1-$3 tables, as well as the Flamingo, which has I believe $2 tables at certain times. You'll be able to find cheap tables downtown consistently, but as already mentioned, it's far easier to find them anywhere during the week. My favorite place to play over the past few years has been the Sahara, it's a pretty nice casino, for having such low table minimums. Off-strip casinos like Terrible's, and the Station and Coast casinos usually have low minimums as well, and I've found those casinos to be good places to hang out. It's nice to avoid the tourist crowds sometimes and just hang with the locals.

See...I went to the Flamingo (do you mean the Flamingo Hilton?) in July remembering I had gambled there on the cheap once, and the tables were all 10 bucks.

I FINALLY found my 5 dollar tables at the Barbary Coast the morning of my departure on this last trip.

Something tells me I should go off the strip, but that's kind of a pain in the butt. I actually like the hustle and bustle. I don't go to Vegas cause it's a "cozy" place, but it might be something to try once. Maybe this next trip.

Which brings me to this Q:

Yes indeed. Myself and several members of the Seattle 501st guys will be there for the big Halloween partay in our gear. However, I'm hearing buzz that the con is not going to be as big as previously announced. This makes little difference to me, as I booked the trip on the super cheap, I'm staying at a sweet hotel, and it's going to be a fun trip whether there's a convention or not.

I'm not much of a gambler, but I've been to Vegas 4 times now and I've gambled every time out there.  I have only played Slots , Video Poker and Keno, because I just feel a bit intimidated at the tables.  I love playing slots the most.  What I usually do is take $100 with me (leave all other money in the hotel room), dump it into slot machines until I have either gone broke or have at least doubled my winnings.  If I can double my winnings (or more in one shot), then I am done gambling.  You just have to have a gameplan when you go there.  Just don't bring a bunch of money at one time, so that you can blow it all in a matter of hours.
