Title: LOTR Extended DVD cuts to be released theatrically for December marathon
Post by: Virex on August 26, 2003, 06:44 AM
Saw this yesterday.  Almost posted this in the ROTK thread, but this is unique enough that I felt it deserved a topic of it's own:

Quote
Return of the King . . . is slated to hit theaters on December 17th. Two weeks before the King release, starting on December 5th, New Line will put the extended DVD version of Fellowship on 100-150 theaters in 10 major U.S. markets and on about 20 screens in Canada. The next week, on December 12th, Towers will re-enter the marketplace just a month after debuting on DVD. The new Fellowship will run 208 minutes, while the extended Towers plays for 214 minutes.

The re-releases of the first two films will lead to a marathon of the Rings films on December 16th, when all three films will be screened back-to-back. In conjunction with exhibition guidelines, the first film will begin playing at 3 p.m., and the second will start at 7 p.m., followed by the premiere of King at 11 p.m., which will play through until December 17th, the official world release date of Return of the King.

What does everybody think about this?  Will you go back and see these one-at-a-time, in the theatre, as they're released?  Will you wait until December 16th to see all three together, back-to-back?  Or will you skip the re-releases altogether, and just see ROTK by itself?

Whatever your plan, it's still an interesting idea and I look forward to seeing how it goes over in December.  And I wonder if this'll give George the idea to do the same type of thing for Episode III. . .

If I lived in a country where they were playing, I’m not sure I would want to sit around for that length of time, especially with my Attention Deficit Disorder. The theatrical cuts were made that way for a good reason. Die-hard LOTR nuts will have the DVDs to watch and I’ll certainly be playing them back-to-back before I go out to see ROTK.

There's no way I could sit through 3 back-to-back movies in a theatre... maybe at home, where I could pause it or at least lay back... but in a theatre - no way.

I may see TT again, doubt it though, as I'll have it on DVD...

There is NOTHING like seeing a film on the big screen, and Peter Jackson knows it as well as I do. I only wish it weren't such a limited release. Ten markets? I wonder if Scranton can get that lucky.

As for Episode III, George would sooner release it direct-to-video than saturate the market with the first two. The only draw there would be if the movies featured even MORE additional scenes. And right now, I think he's a little too busy.

There's no way in hell FOTR and TTT will be played here, so I'm not worried about it.

Well Merry Christmas to me!  Hell yeah, I'm all over this!  I've been hoping that at some point they'd release a LOTR marathon like this, and considering it's with the added footage from the extended editions which never played in theaters, that's an even greater plus!  To see all movies back to back to back, to watch the entire story unfold in it's proper sequence, in all it's glory, will be a movie watcher and LOTR fan's dream!

The only thing that's a bit of a bummer, is that we won't be getting the Extended Edition version of ROTK.  But oh well, I'll live.  I can easily sit through an 11+ hour movie marathon, if it means being lost in the LOTR universe.  It's a great place, and whenever I watched the other two movies, I'm always left wanting more... for it just to continue on.  So this is a dream come true!

One of my greatest SW moments ever, was when there was a big charity screening of the entire Original Trilogy of Star Wars up in Santa Barbara when I was in college (around '95).  Watching ANH, ESB, and ROTJ all back to back to back was one of the happiest 7+ hours of my life (this was before the Special Editions had even been mentioned).  There's no better way to watch a trilogy of movies containing one story unfold.  Gotta watch 'em all in a row!

Load up on your soda and candy, wear some comfy clothes, get a great seat, and enjoy!  Doesn't get any better!  Can't wait for the LOTR marathon.  I'll probably wait to see all three in a row, rather than watching the other two separately first.  Keep my appetite whetted...

I wonder if when all is said and done, if there will ever be a 6 movie marathon with all the SW flicks shown together?  I still don't care much for the prequels, but it would definitely be a great time if it did happen!

Thanks (as always) for the great movie scoop V!  Can't wait...   8)

Will there be a Lord of the Rings Marathon Commemorative Catheter? A little Frodo "Bag-Ins?" Otherwise you'll be using that "one ring" to... you know... :o

True story from the Minneapolis PD, they caught a guy wearing a vacuum hose attached to his penis.  Why may you ask?  So he could sit at a bar all night long and drink.  Well what does the hose have to do with that?  So he could just urinate in the hose which was long enough to reach the floor of the bar.

"Hey the floor is all wet here..."

I could see this coming in handy for the LOTR Butt Numb a Thon

well since it will never make it to backwoods PA, no, I won't see it.

I'd rather just watch DVDs anyway....

If they make it to a theater within a reasonable drive, I will probably go see them individually, just to make sure I get to see the extended versions on the big screen, but will also go see the big marathon, but more just to have fun and not soak in the first two movies.

God I hope they make it out here......

I'm all for seeing them individually and all at once in a drunken stuper one evening.

Of course I'll want to see them individually more to soak them in like Adam said.

Should be a fun thing...  :)

Too bad they don't have a list of what markets are getting lucky. I might make a road trip to see these.

Too bad they don't have a list of what markets are getting lucky. I might make a road trip to see these.

Yeah, I was wondering about that myself, yesterday.  Here's a list of the top-twenty biggest-populated cities from the 1990 census:

 1.  New York, NY
 2.  Los Angeles, CA
 3.  Chicago, IL
 4.  Houston, TX
 5.  Philadelphia, PA
 6.  San Diego, CA
 7.  Detroit, MI
 8.  Dallas, TX
 9.  Phoenix, AZ
10. San Antonio, TX

11. San Jose, CA
12. Baltimore, MD
13. Indianapolis, IN
14. San Francisco, CA
15. Jacksonville, FL
16. Columbus, OH
17. Milwaukee, WI
18. Memphis, TN
19. Washington, DC
20. Boston, MA

http://www.census.gov/population/www/documentation/twps0027.html

Of those, NYC, L.A., and Chicago are definites.  At least one Texas city will get it, but which one?  (I'm thinking Dallas, not only because it's more centrally-located, but also closer to me) :)   Phoenix and Philly will probably get it.  And even though San Diego and San Jose are more-populated, I'd guess that San Francisco will get it.  There needs to be a city in the southeast with it, so it could go to Jacksonville, but I wouldn't be surprised to see Atlanta get it, even though it's not on the list.  Baltimore and D.C. are pretty close together, so I'd guess that one of those will probably get it.  And, it's not on the list, but I might guess that Seattle will get it too, just because the next-closest one would be in northern California, which is still a good deal away.

So, just for fun, here's my guess-timated list.  We'll see if I was close at all when they announce the cities eventually:

I would modify that list by saying the biggest metro areas...which are

1. New York, NY
2. Los Angeles, CA
3. Chicago, IL
4. Philadelphia, PA
5. Detroit, MI
6. San Francisco, CA
7. Washington, DC
8. Dallas, TX
9. Houston, TX
10. Boston, MA
11. San Diego, CA
12. Atlanta, GA
13. Minneapolis, MN
14. Phoenix, AZ
15. St. Louis, MO
16. Miami, FL
17. Baltimore, MD
18. Seattle, WA
19. Tampa, FL
20. Pittsburgh, PA

This just means Minneapolis has a better shot than say San Antonio or Indianapolis ::)

I say your list looks pretty close Matt, maybe not Phoenix and maybe not Seattle probably Houston and Saint Louis or Minneapolis instead

Hey, I went ahead and added a location to my guess-timated list above, if that'll get you to quit yer' bitchin' about Minnesota not getting the marathon. . .  :P

I think it's an interesting idea but I could not sit that long through it.  All 3 back-to-back-to-back?  Plus I am not the hugest LOTR fan.  I do like it and all.  I could possibly do it for Star Wars though.  But even that may test my patience.

Driving down to Milwaukee to see both extended cuts the first two Saturdays of December and then the midnight showing in Kenosha for ROTK.  I could have gotten tickets for trilogy Tuesday when I bought my other ones but I couldn't convince anyone to sit with me for 10 hours!!

From what I understand most (if not all) trilogy Tuesday tickets are sold out in all participating theatres.  I haven't checked at TORN officially but that was what I read online at the LOTR forums.

Title: Re: LOTR Extended DVD cuts to be released theatrically for December marathon
Post by: Matt on November 15, 2003, 02:26 AM
Well, I don't have any idea on how many places are going to get the LOTR deal, because I think they ultimately opened it up to a bunch more than ten cities (I'll just say this--Oklahoma City got it.  And if Oklahoma City got it, then pretty much every other city in the country should have gotten it, too).  I'm pretty sure one of the LOTR fan-sites has got a list up of all the places that will have it, but I'm pretty sure everything's sold out by now.

However, a couple months ago, Universal did an extremely-limited re-release of Scarface for the 20th anniversary and the DVD, and that was limited to ten cities, much like the LOTR thing was originally supposed to be.

So, just for comparison:

So, just for fun, here's my guess-timated list.  We'll see if I was close at all when they announce the cities eventually:

  • New York City
  • Los Angeles
  • Chicago
  • Philadelphia
  • Dallas/Houston
  • Phoenix
  • San Francisco
  • Atlanta/Jacksonville
  • Baltimore/Washington D.C.
  • Seattle
  • Scott Pearson's house

The theatrical engagements of "Scarface" will take place in New York, Los Angeles, Boston, Chicago, Philadelphia, Washington D.C., Detroit, Dallas, Miami and San Francisco.  (http://biz.yahoo.com/prnews/030902/latu064_1.html)

Well, not bad.  Can't really compare them that much, because they're two different movies, but overall, I guess if you could theoretically release a movie to the ten largest cities, I didn't do too poorly (and if I was trying to guess which cities for Scarface, I definitely would have picked Miami--you'd have to be nuts not to re-release that movie there.)

(And as far as I know, Scott Pearson's house got neither the LOTR trilogy or Scarface. . .)   :-[

Post by: Matt on November 15, 2003, 02:38 AM
Oh, and if Scott would have been picking the cities for Scarface, like he did for LOTR, he would have done a lot better than I did, at nine-for-ten, the one city he missed being Miami, which, like I mentioned above, you'd have to include in a Scarface re-release. . .

I would modify that list by saying the biggest metro areas...which are

1. New York, NY
2. Los Angeles, CA
3. Chicago, IL
4. Philadelphia, PA
5. Detroit, MI
6. San Francisco, CA
7. Washington, DC
8. Dallas, TX
9. Houston, TX
10. Boston, MA

Yeah, we're getting it, but none of my friends got tickets. It was a real fiasco. We have one of those sweet DLP theaters...and they had said they'd be selling tickets online only for one day, then at their box office.

Well, their website broke, so I guess a bunch of people went down to the theater and lined up. They got all the tickets for the showing, and everyone who was just using the net...struck out.

That was all of my friends.

So, I'll be missing this show...but I'll live.

Had this happened with EP3, I'd probably be crapping kittens.

I wanted to go to the all day 3 movie marathon, but tickets ($50 each) sold out in 15 minutes. People were furious. The same webpage thing happened here; the page crashed and only those at the theater got the tickets

My friend is a manager at the Indianapolis theater showing it, and I may be going with him to private screenings of each of the extended versions before they are shown publicly, along with ROTK.

Damn.  I had no idea this whole thing had already gone down, and was in such great demand.  I was really hoping to go, but haven't heard a peep of it out this way, so was totally uninformed, otherwise I would've made the effort.

Where are you guys hearing about this?  In your Sunday paper's Movies section?  Or is there a site somewhere listing the participating theaters?  Help me!   :P

But wait a minute - what happened to the "back to back to back" marathon of all three of them?  That's what I really wanted to go to...  These are just the first two EEs shown seperately (which is still cool in it's own right).

Is the Trilogy marathon still on, or was that idea scrapped?   ???

Actually Matt, those are the theatre's that are participating in the trilogy Tuesday.  They are the only ones that have access to the extended version prints and they will also have access to ROTK so....they can show all three movies back to back to back on Tuesday.  The reason you see no way to purchase Tuesday trilogy tickets is because they are all sold out.  As far as I know (and what was posted at TORN), the only way to get them is through a third party.

Had I known anyone would have been interested I would have posted all the information here the day all the buying of tickets went down (quite the day..let me tell you!!)  but I never really knew LOTR had a fan base here (until lately)....sorry.

Ummm... What?!   ???  This isn't a gambling thread, ya' doofus!   :-*

Guess I should've read the rest of the thread a little better, as it appears the "Trilogy Tuesday" thingee is indeed what I was looking for.  Don't see that mentioned at Beth's link though...  Guess I missed out.  Bummer.   :-\

From LOTR.net (8/22):
Quote
From December 5 - 11, the studio will release 100-150 35mm prints of the Special Extended Edition of The Fellowship of the Ring in cities across the country. On December 12 - 15, these prints will be replaced with Special Extended Edition prints of The Two Towers. On Monday, December 8, and Monday, December 15, both films will be presented back-to-back. Then, on Tuesday, December 16, participating theaters will show a one-time-only marathon of both Extended Edition prints followed by an 11pm screening of The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King. The official opening of the film will commence at 12:01 AM on Wednesday, December 17, 2003.

So I guess the LOTR site just pulled all mention of Trilogy Tuesday since it's sold out now?  Was it the same exact theaters listed for the two EEs that were showing the marathon too?  I could probably stake one of them out and buy a ticket off someone there, I suppose...   8)

But yes, I'd fashion a guess that most SW fans also VERY MUCH dig LOTR.  It is what the SW Prequels should have been, after all...   ;)  So if there's any more LOTR Trilogy marathons planned (or other juicy news), please do share with us!  Thank ya'!   :-*

Holy crap!  Just checked eBay for some tickets, and found some (http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=2203121478&category=16122) for one of the two local places that has it showing...  $400 for a pair, with 6 bids so far, and over 4 days still left on the auction!   :o

Here's another pair of tix, for the other local theater in Hollywood that's showing the flicks: $600 starting price! (http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=2203630379&category=16122)  :'(

Check out the prices these tickets are going for...  Absolutely INSANE!!! (http://search.ebay.com/search/search.dll?cgiurl=http%3A%2F%2Fcgi.ebay.com%2Fws%2F&krd=1&from=R8&MfcISAPICommand=GetResult&ht=1&SortProperty=MetaEndSort&query=trilogy+tuesday)   ::)

And of course, the obligatory petition (http://www.ipetitions.com/campaigns/trilogytuesdaypetition/) to sign, begging for a wider release of the Trilogy Tuesday marathon...   8)

What the hell, I signed it.  So should you!   :P

As for the prices....Yes, they were also that high on Ebay the actual day you could order them.  It was insane (and ticked off a lot of people).  Like I said, it was nuts....servers crashed and many people had no way of running to their local theatre so they were left without any tickets.  I was lucky that the Wisconsin complex had a half way decent website and ordering the tickets went pretty smooth (once they were actually put online).
Lots of horror stories in the forums at LOTRG...glad nothing like this happened with Star Wars tickets (at least nothing I ever heard of).

Title: LOTR: Fellowship Extended Edition: In Theaters
Post by: BigDumbWookiee on December 4, 2003, 02:23 AM
Ok, so its not officially in (select) theaters until Friday, but...

Just got back from watching Fellowship of the Ring Extended Edition, and it was fantastic. I've seen it numerous times before, but seeing it in a theater adds a LOT. I noticed a lot of stuff I never picked up on, and the sound effects alone call for a full movie theater experience (I pride myself in owning a very high quality home theater, and tonight I noticed handfuls upon handfuls of new sound effects I had never heard through home viewing).

If its showing in a nearby theater, I'd strongly recommend seeing it on the big screen.

And the schedule, just in case youre interested:

December 5th-11th: Fellowship of the Ring Extended Edition

Chances are, if you have yet to buy tickets for "Trilogy Tuesday", you've probably already missed your chance. They sold out here in about 15 minutes, at $40 a pop.

I'll be driving down on Saturday to New Berlin, WI to see FOTR.  Glad to hear how much you enjoyed it.  I wish I could see TTT also but it's an eight hour trip and it's too close to the premier of ROTK to make the trek again.
