Yeah I do not think it's official yet...still lots of rumors all pointing to a fall '04 release but at this point it is all rumor
Title: Re: Classic Trilogy DVD Release!
Post by: Morgbug on October 22, 2003, 11:52 PM
Indeed, nothing confirmed as yet.  Lots of rumour and good rumour it is, eh?

I'd be thrilled frankly if he released the OT as the SE without changing it further.  I'm genuinely afraid that more will change (Amidala suddenly appearing in Star Wars - ANH) to satisfy George (and they are his movies after all).

I think my nephew has the O-OT on DVD so I'll borrow his when I get the new 'puter.  Then if these rumoured discs are the SE I'll be happy.  I can then choose whether or not to get the Even Newer Special Editions (ENSE).

1) it's not official, yet.
2) it's not on RS' main page, yet.
3) i'd buy it, yet, i'd rather have the non-SE.  :-*

When it's officially announced, we're ALL gonna know.  It'll be everywhere--Starwars.com, TheForce.net, Originaltrilogy.com, all of the different collecting sites, all of the different DVD sites, everywhere, with the official release date, and everything.  It won't be from a guy named "Mainland05" who thought he saw something on some website somewhere.

In related news, I heard that they've finished Episode III early and it will start showing in an exclusive engagement at a Walla Walla, Washington theatre next week under the assumed title "Big Momma's House 3".

Take it to the bank.

If you guys dont believe me read this, it sounds pretty official to me :

We have more evidence for you that the Star Wars Trilogy is coming to DVD in 2004. First of all, IGN Games has posted a story about the Rogue Squadron trilogy of games (previously exclusive to Nintendo) coming to the Xbox platform in 2004. Word is this is being timed to coincide with the release of the original films to DVD. Also, the Yakface.com website (which is dedicated to Star Wars memorabilia collecting) has learned that Lucasfilm is inviting its many corporate partners to an event at the Presidio (in San Francisco) on November 5th. The invitations read: "Lord Vader is planning a major assault. He summons you to share his top secret battle plans." With Episode III still nearly two years away from theaters, it's entirely possible that this meeting is intended to announce the DVD release plan to retailers for next year. Thanks to everyone who sent these stories in.

It is from The Rumor Mill, but sounds pretty official, so dont yell at me!!!

We're not yelling just having a little fun at your expense Mainland05 and just so you know Virex is shriveled old man from Eastern Montana who likes to harrass people on the internet.

Just give him one of these  ::)
Followed up with one of these  ???
And then zing him with a  >:(

He really likes Smilies

AND...Rebelscum is great for a lot of stuff but their strength is not in breaking news especially non-toy breaking news.  Keep and eye on DVD websites and theforce.net next week and we'll see what happens.  Most signs are pointing toward a yes and let's all hope it is true!

You know--you're lucky.  I had a lengthy, scathing reply all typed out and ready to go, which would have made you wet your pants, but because my internet connection's a bit wonky, I lost it all.  I'm not in the mood to type it again.

Plus, with this reply, I thought you sounded a bit young, so I checked your profile for the first time and it showed that you're just sixteen.

So, consider yourself spared.

You're sixteen--so go out and get you some tail, like other kids your age, and quit posting things about the DVDs using words like "officially" when they're coming from places called "Rebelscum" and "The Rumor Mill".

Leave all the sad speculating and complaining to the pathetic individuals like myself.

Confirmed at the Lucasfilm broohaha up at the Presidio this morning...

Original Trilogy DVDs coming our way in September, 2004!

I'm sure they'll be the Special Edition versions only, though nothing was specified in that regard.

Pretty cheap, $34.99 and shipping is only $6.99.

Has anyone ever dealt with them before?

Hi Mainland05!

Don't remember ever accusing you of lying, although you might have taken it that way, I don't know.

My whole point was that, if you're going to post "news" about something big like this, then it's usually a good idea to provide a link back to the place where you got the news in the first place, or at the very least, mention the place you saw it.

Something like "Hey, I saw this at TheForce.Net" or "Aint-It-Cool-News had a story up earlier" or whatever, just so people can see it for themselves.

There are a lot of stupid people out there, who tend to believe everything they see, and with something as big as the Star Wars DVDs, that's not a good combination.

As for last week's Lucasfilm summit, that's cool.  Personally, I'm taking it with a grain of salt, but I hope those reports are accurate.  The thing I don't get is--where's the official announcement?  The DVD release is huge news, for both Star Wars and the DVD format in general, and I would think that they would have announced it in a press release around the same time that they would have told a bunch of licensees about it.

The only thing I can think of is that, if they are coming next year (and I believe they are), they're holding off on the official announcement until sometime next Spring, or at least until after Christmas this year.  An official announcement now would probably lead to mass-confusion at retail, with many of the afore-mentioned stupid people mistakenly thinking that the DVDs were going to be available for this Christmas.

Anyway, enough.  What'd you guys think of Episode III Big Momma's House 3?  I liked it, I guess, but was ultimately disappointed.  I was hoping it would be the redeemer for the horrible first two installments, but it left me feeling a little underwhelmed and unsatisfied, and asking myself "what in the hell have I been doing with my life for the last three years?".

Oh well.  The trip to Walla-Walla was memorable, at least.

(Oh, and DarthBroem--what'd you think of the porn?)

This just in from Jeremy's RS UK Toy Fair coverage (http://www.rebelscum.com/article.asp?i=46178), regarding the OT DVD release:

Quote
The official proclamation that the Special Editions of Episodes 4, 5 and 6 would be released on DVD format in October/November of this year,

Looks like it's unfortunately going to be the Special Editions...  Not really surprising though, of course.   :-\

Better than nuthin' though!

Disappointing indeed.  Looks like Uncle George is sticking to his guns, and never offering the original versions again.  That's such a shame, and just downright wrong.  He owes his fans and the film community more than that.  I don't understand why he can't get that through his thick head!   >:(

There sure better not be any people complaining about the Malaysian bootlegs floating around, since they're going to forever be the only original versions available!   ::)

It's official:

Star Wars set for DVD bow
Tue 10 February, 2004 06:16

By Brett Sporich

LOS ANGELES (Hollywood Reporter) - "Star Wars Trilogy," one of the most-requested DVD episodic film franchises, is expected to be released as a four-disc DVD box set on September 21.

A global rollout on DVD is expected within days of the domestic release, according to Lucasfilm and 20th Century Fox Home Entertainment.

The trilogy, featuring the classic franchise films "Star Wars," "The Empire Strikes Back" and "Return of the Jedi," will be released on three DVD discs, with a fourth disc likely to hold a newly made documentary about the "Star Wars" franchise and never-before-seen footage, among several other bonus materials, said Jim Ward, Lucasfilm's vice president of marketing and distribution and the DVD trilogy's executive producer.

"We are currently in the process of restoring and remastering all three titles for the DVD release, so we're still working on details of the marketing strategy," Ward said. "But I believe that it is safe to say that it will receive tremendous exposure across all media."

Lucasfilm and Fox chose the September release date to maximise on holiday gift buying during the Thanksgiving and Christmas seasons, 20th Century Fox president Mike Dunn said.

"We sold about 17 million VHS 'Star Wars' units during two fall release periods in '95 and '97," he said.

Combining huge consumer demand for the "Star Wars" franchise with being first out of the gate during the busy fourth-quarter home video market, Fox and Lucasfilm are hoping to cash in on DVD sales throughout the holidays and up until the theatrical release of "Star Wars: Episode III," which is set for release nationwide May, 25, 2005, Dunn and Ward said.

Each of the three films in the "Star Wars Trilogy" has been digitally restored and remastered for sound and picture quality, Ward said.

"First and foremost, the DVDs will deliver the very best possible sound and picture and take advantage of everything the medium can offer," Ward said. "On top of that, we are creating added-value material that gets inside the creation of the 'Star Wars' films in a fresh and fun way. We want watching this DVD collection to be as memorable as seeing the movies for the first time."

The films of the "Star Wars Trilogy" will be sold exclusively as a collection at a still-to-be-determined retail price and not separately, Fox executives said. However, retailers have been known to break up DVD box sets and sell individual titles after the first month out on store shelves.

Although we have heard this rumored for awhile (and several times before), it is just so great to see it comfirmed officially...by Lucasfilm and everything.  Obviously, I can't wait to get these films on DVD, whether they are the Special Editions or not, I just would love to have them in that form (although it would be nice to have both versions on there).  Plus, I'm excited to hear more details on the fourth disc of extras.  The commentary sounds great as well.  I kind of hope the extras include some of those old "making of" type shows, like the one called "From Star Wars to Jedi" which I remember seeing on TV as a kid, around the time of Return of the Jedi (and after).  Anyways, great news!

that's too awsome about the origionals will finally be out in Sept. '04. the sp editions were great except for the following;

Greedo shooting first. Han's a scoundrel. it's in his character to act on the way he did.

"Aleart my stat destroyer to prepare for my arrival." And the sceens of Vader going to his Executor. i don't know but did any sceens there remind us of sceens from ROTJ? "Bring my shuttle." is straight to the point. you know Vader's p.o. !

other than this, they are great. the effects/sound are too good.

i love the commercial about illegal downloading and theft of movies that take away from the actors, stage people, etc. (w/ sean austin). you get a glimpse of the Death Star treanch run w/ Vader's tie. that scene they show is a crystal clear picture. a hell of alot better than the video i have been waching for sometime now ! the dvd's should be worth the wait ! altho i could go for
ROTJ just about now.....on dvd !

Lucas & Co. are typically pretty tight-lipped about what's going on.  I don't doubt tha the photo above is legit, nor do I doubt there has been other changed.  When they released the Trilogy on VHS they said it would be the last chance ever to get the original version.

I personally don't care if they make some tweaks to the films so long as they undo that crap where greedo shoots first.  Han Solo is a smuggler and a scoundrel.  He shoots that b@stard Greedo first and that's all there is to it!
