Title: Online Shopping
Post by: Scott on March 18, 2004, 01:51 PM
Last Christmas I did almost all of my shopping online for my wife and son and parents.  It was great.  I've been buying SWcrap online for a long time too, probably since '98...probably before a lot of the encryption and safety nets were really there for online ordering

A few weeks ago I did my taxes online

Two nights ago I went a step further, Grocery Shopping Online.  A local company called SimonDelivers.com (http://www.simondelivers.com/default.asp) delivers your groceries to your doorstep...they save your shopping lists from week to week so all you have to do is add the same staples to your cart each week, add what you might be needing extra and boom, 15 minute grocery shopping trip.  They gave us $50 off our first order to boot.  I'm sold...

How much shopping online do you do?

WOW!!! Online Grocery Shopping and then they deliver! What a huge step into the future! I am shocked we have nothing like that over here in Nor Cal.

I rarely ever order online and if I do I cant!

eBay (http://www.ebay.com/)   ;D

Grocery shopping, I'd rather go to the store. I like to see what I am exactly getting, "expiry dates" are a big issue with me.

Just be careful if someone else on your street does Simon too.

Once, my wife and I got part of the neighbor's order...

My wife called me at work and wanted to know why I had ordered 48 cans of Cat Food and a few cans of Prunes with the regular items.

Not having a cat or irregularity issues, I too was confused as to why these things were in our order.  Turned out they were for the lady down the street and just got mixed up with our order.

The lady down the street was much more upset than we were about the ordeal.  Probably had something to do with the fact that we weren't charged for the items and got them and she WAS charged for the items and DIDN'T get them.

I just thought the whole thing was pretty funny actually...

The moral of the story?  Always check to make sure you got what you paid for I guess.

Good point Jeff, we were sort of wondering that too...The two drawbacks I see are: Not seeing the produce that you are buying and the selection is not as good as the big store.  Still for what it does, I'm loving it so far

I'm extremely frugal when it comes to grocery shopping.  Like Dale, I check expiry dates on everything.  Produce is an issue as well.  Most importantly though is I prefer to buy as much as I can when it's on sale.  The savings are pretty dramatic here.  Not sure if the same happens in the US or not though.  A lot of places here have the regular price on items sky high and waiting for a sale can save as much as 50% or more.  That's huge money for me over the course of a year.

I do know that in general my experience has shown that US food prices are generally much, much lower than in Canada.  A box of 10 juice boxes for the kid up here at regular price runs $4.97, pure highway robbery.  Sale price is typically half that.  Last time I was in Grand Forks the price was a measly $1.97 US at full regular retail.  Absurd.

The expiration date thing never really bothers me....dairy stuff yeah, but the stuff is usually gone within a week or frozen (In the case of meat)  Its the visual that sorta might bug me.  Not having to haul around a 2 year old and a soon to be newborn (Or being stuck at home with said combo when wifey goes shopping for an hour+) does not bother me at all

I don't know if I'd go for online grocery shopping. Since we likely don't have such wondrous future thingys here, I'm not worried about it.

I try to order as much stuff for my collections as I can online. Saves on gas so soldiers can stop dying for oil so much (but then there's the whole moral issue of the oil used in plastic making :P) and I actually get what I want without waiting for some assurchin toy dept. manager to order more Star Wars and LOTR figures. I get all of my Buffy stuff from online sources.
