Title: Star Wars Potato Heads
Post by: Mikey D on January 14, 2005, 07:36 AM
Darth Tater Head (http://www.hasbro.com/starwars/pl/page.news/id.1130/dn/default.cfm)

Pretty cool looking. Might be a neat "novelty" item to have.

That's kind of what I was thinking too Mikey, might be something fun to pick up just to have a different type of piece in the collection.

I've got a bad feeling about this... like Scott said in a different thread, this is a bad sign of things to come.  I can only imagine that ANYTHING Hasbro can stick the SW label on they will.

Ugh.

As for Tater, well... I guess it's OK if you a Mr. Potato Head fan.  Since I'm not, well... I pass on this one.  :-\

I agree with that too Jeff, and what Scott mentioned earlier....as much as I like Star Wars, I really don't like it plastered every single place it can possibly be.  Promotion is fine, but when it gets oversaturated it seems to take something away from the franchise in a way.  I like it a little bit simpler I guess.  But then again, I kind of liked the "different" products in the vintage days (BK Glasses, dixie cups, things like that), maybe it just wasn't as bad :).  I hope we don't see an overhype on the levels of Episode I again though.

I don't see how they could possibly reach the saturation levels they reached with Episode I  ;).  I agree, I hope we don't see some of the crap we saw back then.  However, I think this Darth Tater is a great product, very unique.  I plan on getting 2 - 1 for me, 1 for my daughter - I think the display value for me and the play value for her will be great.

Wow, Darth Tater just made the front page of CNN.com (http://www.cnn.com)  Oddly enough, they're reporting about it in their "Technology" section.  Huh?

Here's (http://www.cnn.com/2005/TECH/fun.games/01/19/tater.doll.ap/index.html) the direct link to the story, for when some more noteworthy news bumps it off the front page...

I picked up two of these on Saturday.  One for my collection, the other for my nephew.

I also got him a bunch of the Playskool stuff when they first came out (including the Falcon) and he loves playing with them.

Yikes, more taters.  Might be neat for some, but its also taking an idea that is kitschy with one release, and overdoing it now if it continues.  That said, how many of you ended up picking up the Darth Tater?  I didn't...but have considered it....but I'm spending enough money right now that I have put it off.  I tell you, I did see a lot of them selling on April 2 though.

I saw about 6 of them at TRU on April 2nd. Had one in my hand and showed a fellow collector and we laughed then I put it back. I went back to TRU 2 days later and they were gone.

Odd isn't it?  The popularity of these things, that is.

I saw a few of them on the shelf last Saturday morning at WM and poof, they were gone a few days later.

I wanted to buy one, but the wife put her foot down.  I like SW products that are out of the ordinary and this one fits the bill - may have to buy it under the radar...if I ever see one again!

The spudtrooper looks kinda cool.  I'd like to see a finished product before I commit to getting one though.  Still, seeing as I got the Darth Tater, I think I can pick up a couple of these for the niece and nephew as well.  ;D

ruiner, if you want me to look around here, pm me and I'll pick one up for you.  Last time I looked, they were fairly plentiful.

I think they could actually continue this for awhile if they did it right.

Note: If they did it right

I liked Darth Tater, and I'm sure I'll get a Spud Trooper if I see one. I really think they could go somewhere with this though. They're really frying off the shelves here. heh heh The puns are endless! ;) ::)
Title: Chewbacca Mr. Potato Head?

In the picture below...

http://www.jedidefender.com/gallery/imageFolio.cgi?action=view&link=Conventions/Celebration_III/Hasbro&image=DSC00717.jpg&img=80&tt=

...there is (on the third shelf down, behind Darth Tater) what appears to be a Chewbacca Mr. Potato Head complete with fur, bandolier, and all. Can someone lucky enough to have been able to go to CIII tell me whether that's actually what this is? Any information would be appreciated. Now... discuss!

Just thought I'd bump this up since the Spudtrooper is available to preorder at StarWarsShop (http://shop.starwars.com/catalog/product.xml?product_id=3850;category_id=;pcid1=;pcid2=).  Anyone ordering?  The Darth Taters continue to fly off the shelves around here.  Wal-Mart had a huge shipment taking up an entire section of shelf, and they were gone not a week later.  I still debate picking one up, although my wife might be getting me one for my birthday.  The Spudtrooper looks kind of spiffy, for what it is:

I think I'm going to wait and see if he shows up here. I'll make up my mind when I get a better look at him inhand just like the Vader Tater. I've seen more Vader's floating around here and he sure does move off the shelves.

The Spudtrooper appeals to me just because it's a trooper...and because of that blue potato masher gun. ;) I'll probably end up getting one eventually (for my kids). However, I did get pick up a Darth Tater and it really freaks out my daughter. I think it's the eyes or something. Probably something she'll outgrow...hopefully.  :P

Nice try, we know who it's really for.   ;)

I'm sure I'll grab a Spudtrooper to go next to my Darth Tater.  It took quite a while for Darth to show up in Canada (at least my part of it), so I'll be patient and wait for it to show up locally.

I have to agree the highlight of the Spudtrooper is his potato masher.   :D

Meh. They're cute, and great for kids (these are toys after all) but not interesting enough to me to actually spend money on.

But if they do an Obi-Spud Kenobi or a Clonetater (AOTC-style clonetrooper), count me in. ;D

Of course, there's a whole 'nother problem no one has attempted to address: figuring out where Darth Tater fits in the Sith succession. Was he Sidious' first, failed apprentice before Maul? Or does he date from an earlier era -- was he Darth Bane's apprentice?

Personally I suspect he was Plagueis's Master.

I bought one of these for my nephew when they came out and the other day he used the Dath Tater face mask as a mask for him, grabbed his red toy lightsaber and told his dad (my brother) that he was Darth Vader.

I've converted another to this hobby!   ;D

I got one of these (Darth Tater) from my wife for my birthday, and it really is a neat little "odd ball" type of Star Wars collectible.  I like it.  I hope to pick up the Spudtrooper when it is released as well.  These things have really been selling quite well around here, disappearing pretty quickly.  I'll be curious to see how this latest batch does, I stopped at Wal-Mart yesterday and they literally had about 50 of these laying on the shelves.  Must have just put them out, because they weren't there this past weekend.  Lots of Taters laying about, I wonder if they'll sell.

will there be any more of these types of star wars p heads in the works?  after the SD Conv and no pictures, I doubt it.  it's a shame to because I thought of one that would've been cool.  His name Darth Spudious.  maybe his cloak could have been made to look like black aluminum foil.  just a thought.

I was kind of wondering about the Spudtrooper as well.  I have the product page (at SWShop) bookmarked, just to see if/when it came in stock and I might think about ordering one.  The listing has been gone for a bit now, just saying "this product is currently unavailable" on the page now.

Looks like a similar price to DarthTater - $8.99 plus tax/shipping.

On the R2-D2 front, a few more pics have turned up such as this one:

What I didn't know until I saw this pic is that Spud2 comes with a mini-holo Spud Leia!  Very cool!

What is that blue piece above him?

Now that the better pics have shown up, I can say that it is R2's "Buzz-Droid Attack Claw" from RotS.   ::)

I would have rather had the periscope...  :(

Thanks for the pic Jeff.  I just saw that this morning as well, and the fact that it has the mini holo Spud Leia makes it even cooler.  I'd like to pick this one up if possible.  I still haven't found the Spudtrooper here though, and I'd kind of like to get that one.  It would be nice to have a "complete set" of these.  I wonder if there will be more in this line or not?

Holo Leia, sweet.  8)

I'd say you could take that one to the bank.  I think these have been selling like crazy.

Any guesses as to who might be next?  3PO?  Luke?  or maybe a prequel character like Anakin?

These are getting ridiculous. The Vader was cute. The trooper was too much. Now this is COMPLETE overkill.

Two words - Tater Fett  (or maybe Boba Spud is better?)

The first 2 were in armor, so I think Fett is the natural next choice.

Well, it appears that R2 is now up for Pre-Order at EE:

Star Wars R2-Potatoo (http://www.entertainmentearth.com/aff-home.asp?id=JE-405087801&number=HS02456) - $9.99 plus shipping

I think I'll pass on that price and wait for retail to save a few bucks.

Also, it sounds like Darth Tater and Spudtrooper will continue to ship with R2-Potato, so if you missed the Spudtrooper you will see him again.

Post by: Brian on February 3, 2006, 03:42 PM
Thanks for the heads up Jeff.  I think that might be more than I want to pay as well, but hopefully it will be easy enough to find at retail.  I still haven't found the Spudtrooper (and actually, surprisingly, Darth Tater has dried up around here too), so hopefully he will start showing up again too.  I actually took the time to check the potato head aisles recently, but they don't have any of the Star Wars branded ones in town.  I suppose they are kind of silly in a way, but I kind of like having something "different" to add to the collection every once in awhile....I'd rather see these than Choppers and Force Battlers :P.

I don't think it was actually a ChewTater:

http://www.jedidefender.com/gallery/imageFolio.cgi?action=view&link=Conventions/Celebration_III/Hasbro&image=DSC00717.jpg&img=80&tt=

Checking back through this thread, I find the above link. It was never confirmed but it certainly looks like a Spudbacca.

That certainly is something Chewbacca. I wouldn't be suprised if it is a "Spudbacca". But why won't they release it?!? ;D

I like the Spud line...  It's a neat little novelty but man I could really be content with it not going too much further. :)  They're cool but these are the kinda things I leave packaged and think a full set will look really nice displayed, ya know?

Spud2-D2 is pretty cool looking though...  The little holo Spuddess Leia looks like it could be the preview of a regular one though.  This line could just keep going and going.

The Star Wars taters (Darth and Spud) haven't really been around here in any capacity for awhile now.  I would still like to pick up the Spudtrooper (and R2, when he is released).  Just out of curiosity, were most of you able to find the Spudtrooper at retail and if so, was it awhile ago?  I'm considering ordering one online somewhere, if the price is right, any suggestions?  Otherwise, no big rush, I might wait and see if I can find them when R2 is released.....but I was just curious if there was any good deals or places to look for the spud right now.

Darth Taters are still to be found around here and in plenty of numbers.  I only saw the Spudtrooper twice and bought it both times (one for me and one for my niece for Christmas).  I'd say buy online (maybe Amazon?), Brian.  I heard rumors that the Spudtrooper might be shipping with R2, but who knows for sure.

I grabbed my Spudtrooper from Amazon a long while back since they had free shipping deal running and I was tired of searching for him.  Haven't seen him around on-line for a while though.

I heard rumors that the Spudtrooper might be shipping with R2, but who knows for sure.

EE and a few others have confirmed that the Spudtrooper will ship again with the R2-Potatoo, so he'll be back on the shelves soon.

Spudtrooper at EE (http://www.entertainmentearth.com/prodinfo.asp?number=HS02347) - due in April
Star Wars Mr. Potato Head Assortment 2 (http://www.entertainmentearth.com/prodinfo.asp?number=HS02337B) - includes 1x Potatoo, 1x Spudtrooper, 2x Darth Tater due in May

No, I actually passed on it, just like spudtrooper.  I do have Darth (also saw some Darth Tater keychains in the US earlier this week) but that was a gift from my wife and daughter, so I could hardly say no.  If I found these potato heads locally, I'd pick them up, but I don't even feel like paying the additional shipping on them.  I even rejected a trade with them so they obviously don't do that much for me.

Now, you buy all my comics.

I did the same - I picked up the Artoo-Potatoo when ordering my GH 2-packs (and he arrived yesterday).

Artoo is a bit smaller than the other Potato figures, which makes sense I guess.  And he doesn't really have as many parts as the others, but at least he's got the mini-Holo figure which is cool.

I'm still not entirely sure why I'm buying these potato guys, so I guess I could go either way.  If they do make the eventual Obi-Spud Kenobi or Luke Frywalker, I'd probably buy them, but if this is the last one, that's cool too.  ;)

That's kind of how I feel about them too.  I think they are kind of neat as a "kitschy" sort of thing to have in the collection, and would likely buy any more they would make, but if its just these three - that's fine with me too.  I don't necessarily need a whole bookcase full of them :).  I ordered mine via HTS.com as well, and with reports out of Comic-Con that R2 will be a limited release, I'm glad I did just in case.

I love these little guys. Before I knew they were even being made, I found Darth at the TRU in Times Square. My wife and I laughed so hard we had to buy it. These are the oddball collectibles that I love and actually prefer to stuff like the 3 3/4" line. There's alot less of them and they're just so much more enjoyable IMHO....

Hasbro said a few times that Artoo-Potatoo would see "limited release" due to diminished retailer support, but they never really said what that meant.  I never saw one at retail and ordered mine through HasbroToyShop to be safe.  I guess it's possible that K-Mart asked for it and more were made or something?

As for TRU/Superstore finds, they don't really count because Canada does strange stuff.  You can't get all the basic figure waves, but you can get limited release potato heads?   Crazy Canada... ::)

I doubt it's the selling well aspect. They're completely gone from the shelves over here and i've never even seen the R2...

My guess is that since Disney already has a strong relationship with the Potato Head products that they felt this was a good opportunity. All the toy stores at Disney have huge "make your own Potato Head" areas and they've been packed everytime i've been there...

My only wonder is if these will be complete Potato Heads or just "parts kits" like they did with POTC...

Luke Frywalker
Princess Tater
Spuda Fett
Yam Solo
Darth Mash

I wish these wouldn't be so tough to get, I wouldn't mind getting at least a few of them.  I thought the original potato heads were something kind of kitschy to have in the collection.  Then again, they could have stopped with those three too.  Pics at the linky (as well as the Disney figurines).

Scum (http://www.rebelscum.com/story/front/Disney_Potato_Heads_Are_Out_109032.asp) is reporting that these have hit Disney(World) - I'm pretty sure these are exclusive to FL only...no?

Almost a year ago i was in Disney and they had some of the above mentioned:

Luke Frywalker
Princess Tater
Spuda Fett
Yam Solo
Darth Mash

Any signs yet on whether the Clone Tuber is an exclusive as well.  I wish I'd gotten those Disney ones....

I'm still kinda peeved that they just didn't make the Disney exclusives a general release.  The first three seemed to have sold well at retail.

Yeah, me too.  I really enjoyed the first three, and would have gladly grabbed some of those Disney exclusive ones as well.  I'm sure I could still get them somehow, but I'm not sure if its worth the hassle.  Had they been available at retail or even just HTS, I would have gotten the Han and Fett ones for sure.
