Title: Most You've Ever Spent on a Single Collectible
Post by: Brian on August 24, 2005, 11:29 AM: This doesn't have to necessarily relate strictly to "other collectibles", or even to just Star Wars. As I've been weighing options lately (with input from the Mrs.) on what collectible lines I might branch off into, if any, the issue of price is definitely a big point. It just got me to thinking about how much is too much to spend for a collectible. I think everyone has a different "top dollar" depending on budget, but I was just curious what was the most some of you have spent (or would spend) on a single, individual collectible. I know I am a definite lightweight, due to budget constraints, so I think the most I've spent for a single item in my collection was for the POTJ B-Wing ($40 plus tax). That's the highest I can think of off hand. Of course, that doesn't help the cumulative total for the year(s) when you factor in all the figures, glasses, misc, etc. There have been items I've considered, but the timing just hasn't worked out yet (FX Lightsabers, Gentle Giant Mini Busts, and SW Kubricks in particular). Anyways, if you don't mind sharing that is, what is the most you have ever spent on an individual piece in your collection?

I think the most I've ever spent was about $175 (including tax) and it was spent on this:

My DC Direct Prop Replica Green Lantern Power Battery. ;)

When it comes down to Star Wars, the most I've spent on a single item would probably be the Saga Imperial Shuttle, which worked out to about $140 with tax and shipping and everything. Stupid FAO - I definitely don't miss them being a major retailer... >:(

Runner-ups include my Kubrick Max Rebo Band box set ($128 shipped from Japan) and my Kubrick Early Bird Set ($120 shipped from Japan).

But I've blown that away since I've ordered the 3 upcoming Sideshow statues: Obi-Wan ($275US), Darth Vader ($350US), and General Grievous ($450US).

$500 on a Toy McCoy 12" Indiana Jones, which I later traded for SW props (Han ESB Blaster, ANH Vader saber). That's the most I think I've spent on a single collectible so far, but there may be a Master Replica AT AT in my near future... :P

I'd rather take $600 and spend it on 100 figures instead of just 1. But that aside, I'm pretty sure the most I've ever spent on a single item for my "collection" is probably this:

This was an exclusive at the old Warner Bros. Studio Stores, I miss those so much. They had the best stuff.... If I remember correctly, it ran me about $850... but it's huge, and limited to 350 numbered pieces, and came framed in that nice wood frame. I've got some WB and Disney sericels, but I don't think any of them were much more than $450 - $500 each...

The most I've dropped on any 1 item is the $325 for the Code 3 Republic Gunship.

I have a couple items in the $150 range...mostly carded vintage and the FAO Shuttle. And I think I paid around $225 for my boxed vintage shuttle.

I much prefer a good bargain though.

I think my double-telescoping Luke was probably the highest I've paid for any single figure, but like my MR FX saber was up there (as it was an impulse buy at C3 too).

Without a doubt though, my most expensive buy was a MIB (Box c8 or so) Droids A-WIng. All inserts, no stickers applied... That cost me a pretty penney a long time ago. It's sad to see how those dipped in price really.

Secondly, put on your helmets, because it's CHEAP BASTARD ALERT:

-Most I've ever paid for a collectible: $100.00 for the Saga Imperial Shuttle from KB (free shipping!)

-Most I've ever paid for a single action figure: $18.00 for the C3 Vader.

Years ago, I paid 35 dollars for a single basketball card (an NBA Hoops Detroit Pistons World Champions card in the early 1990s) and saw it dwindle to less than a dollar within two years. Needless to say, I don't pay a secondary market rate for anything these days unless it's absolutely necessary. I'd love to get some of the more extravagant pieces (the Code 3 Slave I and the MR Sidious saber would be the only two high end pieces I'd like to have, honestly), but I never have the sufficient cash flow to buy either one of them. Oh well, when I win the lottery and/or conquer South Carolina, this will change.

I also just thought of my yellow Clone Bust that I got off ebay for $120 or something close to that. Once I got it open I then proceeded to drop it. ::) Luckly the only thing that broke was its finger which I glued back on.

price. He was $155 plus shipping I think.

The next year, it was reissued again, with more accessories, and $50 cheaper. So that was the last true Takara Transformer I ever bought.

I'll end up dropping more when I buy the Saga Imperial Shuttle, I'm sure.

It was unused in the box. Unfortunately, it was in our shed, which leaks and now bugs are in there, so the box is pretty much crap now.
