Title: Guilty Pleasures
Post by: Scott on April 10, 2003, 10:37 AM
Things you love but don't really tell anyone about ;)  Or things you only have once in a while

Trading Spaces  Ever since I became a home owner I can't help but like this show, no matter how much it challanges my masculinity.  It is really fun to watch and some of those designers are hot!

Cat Stevens Not sure where Cat ranks in the world of music but I hear songs of his and I can't help but smile and sing along.  I think he is one of the most underrated singers of all time

Snickers  Since I have been watching the waistline for a long time now candy bars are pretty much a no no.  But sometimes while standing in line at Target I just get the urge to grab a Snickers and eat the heck out of it, savoring every single bite.

Shania Twain  I really like a lot of her music and she is such eye candy that she just oozes sexy to me.  I really can't stand a lot of anyhting that comes out of Nashville...

Natalie Merchant I have always been a 10000 Maniacs fan and when Natalie went solo she quickly became one of my favorite singers.  Her first solo CD Tigerlilly is one I would be bringing with if I was heading over the Pacific on a FedEx plane.

Pizza  Another of the watching your waistline things but plowing into a Large Papa Murphy's Pepperoni Pizza with an ice cold beer to wash it all down with...

Steak  Steak is one of those foods I enjoy only when properly prepared for me with the right sides, marinated just right and it has to be grilled to the right temperature

Well this question could be interesting. I will add a few of my guilty pleasures but I don't feel guilty about them ;)

A good scotch with a good cigar. I don't have either often but sometimes I will splurge and pick up some.

on the lines of steak like Scott mentioned, a good tenderloin steak marinaded in teriyaki and grilled. served with grilled baked potatos and onions.

A good long ride on the motorcycle on a cool summer night near dusk on the old country roads. peacefull.

Turtle cheesecake and coffee. mmmm good

Guinness  My wife told me there are like a 1000 calories in a pint of Guinness (or so she heard) I don't care...it is one of the finest drinks on the planet

Guiness is good. Man I haven't had a Guiness since Xmas. That must change this weekend ;)

. Tell me Scott do you prefer it from the can or bottle at home?
I don't know if it was just the batches I had but the can seemed better and more creamy

Post by: Scott on April 10, 2003, 10:52 AM
I like the can too which is almost blasphemous...It really depends on which one is cheaper at the liquor store (MN doesn't sell Beer in anything but a Liquor Store  ???)
Title: Re: Guilty Pleasures
Post by: DSJ™ on April 10, 2003, 10:52 AM
Arighty then.  Guiness fans.  8)
I prefer mine from the can. I heard that when you pour it into glass, you know when its a good batch when you print your initials on the foam & when you finish drinking it, the  initials are still there.

I'm a steak & lobster kinda guy & a Shania Twain fan in case you haven't noticed.  ;)

Pizza is great no matter what. Even if its cold.

I forgot to add this one. EZ CHEESE ;D

I prefer my Guiness from a tap.  I don't buy Guiness from a liquor store, where, like MN, is the only place you can buy beer in MA.  And liquor stores are closed on Sundays here, which sucks during football season.  You have to remember to buy beer on Saturday.

Onto my guilty pleasures:

Bon Jovi:  been a fan since Slippery when Wet.  I believe there's a law in NJ that you must be a fan of his if you're from there.  It also applies to Springsteen  ;)

80s Hair Bands: Poison, Crue, Quiet Riot, Twisted Sister, etc.  Not the most profound music in the world, but I like it none the less.

I'm also a fan of Shania, Britney, Christina, etc.  A fan of everything but the music  ;)

My too junk food vices are chocalate covered pretzels and mint chocalate chip ice cream.  There is always ice cream in my freezer and I will not pass up a chocalate covered pretzel, ever.  And no, I don't lick my hand after eating them like Svenning from Mallrats  ;)

Like reconsgt, I don't feel guilty about these things- I'm a card-carrying hedonist and proud of it. BUT, I will list a few things anyway.

-Starbucks White Chocolate Mochas

-totally over-the-top tropical rum drinks, and top-shelf margaritas

-Newcastle

-Fashion magazines

-Shopping- make-up/hair products, shoes, lingerie, handbags

-Playing blackjack in Vegas

-spending all my cash on plane tickets

-and my biggest pleasure, albeit not a guilty one, is to be in the presence of a certain person who I cannot get enough of. I'm SO done for.  ;)

My wife just introduced me to the White Chocolate Mocha, a thing of beauty it is.  The white choclate adds that extra twist that the regular mocha was no longer giving me...nice call Carrie

She Hulk

rusty nails made with Johnny Walker black ( don't know why but it seems so much better this way - tried Cardhu, Glenlivet and a slew of others)

Red Vines licorice - a must have when traveling to the US

Frankenberry - must be 10 or more years since I've had it

women - they're just so damn beautiful, sorry if that's shallow, but they look so good (smell good too)

golf - add beer and I am one seriously happy camper

trading - screw the value, it's just so much fun

I am proud to see She Hulk listed Brent...

The Gambler  Possibly one of the cheesiest songs ever is perhaps one of my favorites "On a warm summers evening, on a train bound for nowhere"

I probably enjoy plenty of things I should keep to myself (Duran Duran, Blind Date, Star Wars toys), but I just discovered something over the weekend that actually had me looking around to see if anyone was watching.

Kung Pow: Enter the Fist was on HBO this weekend. The trailers looked so stupid, I passed when it was in theatres. I mean, a CGI cow spoofing the The Matrix? Please.

What I didn't realize was that it parodied the entire Kung Fu movie genre, repleat with poorly dubbed dialogue, lousy film stock, and choppy editing. This fiasco had me roaring!

(Just don't tell anyone.)

As I sit here in the office working away on a Saturday afternoon on a huge project with a Monday deadline, I find myself enjoying what I'm sure would be considered a "guilty pleasure"...

The Hits of the 80's music station on Music Match.com (or anywhere else for that matter).  Yep, that was my era, and I loved the music.  Totally groovin' out right here at my desk as we speak!  I mean c'mon now, how could you not love "Jessie's Girl", "Whip It", "Mickey", "867-5309", and Stacey Q's classic "Two of Hearts"...?!   8)  Feel free to flame away all you hard rock music lovers...   ;)

Red Vines licorice - a must have when traveling to the US

I guess these might count for me as well, though since we keep a well stocked bucket of the things right in the lobby area of our office, which I'm only about 25 feet away from, Red Vines are just a part of my regular (nutritious) day.  I probably eat a good 20 per day when I'm at work...   :o

Ah yes, a great song...  The morning of my wedding (which was in the late afternoon), me and my 7 groomsmen went down to the only bar in my wife's hometown, a total dive, but we had the joint all to our selves.  We had a couple beers, shot some stick, and grooved to the jukebox.  But when one of my buddies played The Gambler, we all stopped what we were doing and just sang our hearts (and lungs) out to the song.  The doors to the bar were wide open, and I'm sure all the local passersby could hear us all loud and clear.  A beautiful moment of male bonding really.  So great we did it again once more before we left...

My wife's a big fan of this show too Scott.  She actually just called me two minutes ago to tell me that Slash (from Guns n' Roses) is supposed to make a guest appearance on the episode she's about to watch.  Apparently he's a big fan of the show!   :)  Even better is that they're doing a house in Van Nuys, which is just 5-10 minutes from me here in Sherman Oaks (for a professional keyboard player).  Maybe I should hustle over there and meet Paige, eh?  Oh yeah, these shows aren't live...  :P

Patty just gave me an in-progress update on the show - Gieneveve (sp?) is teaching Slash how to sew!   :o   :-*

Paige hot, cannot beat to watch entire show.  Sound turned down is better.  Must relinquish remote every now and then.  Mostly now AND then.

mmm, I wish I had red vines now.  Yum.

I just ate a bunch of Starburst- that's a pretty guilty pleasure. I also love Sour Patch Kids. That's just about the only candy I'll eat at the movies. Speaking of movie snacks, I have also been known to get the crappy nachos with lots of jalapenos. I love them, and yes, I know they suck.

Oooh, Stadium Nachos, no matter how bad I feel the next day, loaded with Jalpenos are a definite guilty pleasure.  That cheese is so wonderfully disgusting it should be illegal, it is almost Hot EZ Cheez

Maybe it was because I wasn't my usual grumpy self last night, or the news that good friends of ours are expecting.  Or it could have been the cute actresses playing the mommies, but we watched Daddy Day Care last night and I actually kind of liked it.  Not Eddie Murphy's best work by far, but fairly entertaining.  Maybe I was turned off by the critics (I know, never listen to critics) and my expectations weren't that high to begin with.

Maybe I'll give Gigli a shot and see if it's as bad as every one thinks.

My guilty pleasures:
Mochas in my 'Buffy& Willow& Xander& Giles' mug.
'Showgirls' on DVD. Gina Gershon-- :o
Toy collecting
Guiness, from either the can or the bottle. Preferably tap, when I can get it.
Franken Berry or Count Chocula while watching Buffy or Adult Swim.
Pizza from a joint here called Mama Nicks'
Nascar races--redneck, I know.
The song 'I Quit' by Hepburn. It represents all I hate in modern music, yet it's so damn catchy.

Abba and the Bee Gees - Really some of the best pop music ever, if you think about it.

The English Patient - Despite winning Best Picture everyone but me seems to hate it passionately.

Tato Skins - Oh so good.   ;D

I can only think of a few off hand, although I guess toy collecting is kind of a guilty pleasure too :).

Music  Michelle Branch - I have been a fan of almost all of her music I have heard, and I'm not sure why, it just always seems like men get made fun of if they like "girls" music :), but there are many talented female artists.

Television  I'm in the same boat with those who have mentioned Trading Spaces.  My wife and I watch that show quite often, along with other shows along the same genre...such as Clean Sweep, and occasionally While You Were Out...all on TLC.  Another television one would be the Fox show "the OC".  My wife has been watching this show from the start, and I have been watching it with her...and I hate to admit it, I'm hooked. :)

Oh, had to add one other television one...cartoons.  These are aside from ones such as Simpsons, Futurama, Home Movies, and Family Guy.  I guess I don't quite consider those "cartoons", even though they are.  I enjoys me a cartoon now and then, depending on what it is.  Classic Looney Tunes, MOTU, superhero type cartoons, and occasionally Spongebob Squarepants...I don't know, I find it funny sometimes.

Food  I guess it would be Pizza.  It is something my wife and I both enjoy to eat, but know we shouldn't too terribly often.  I'm also a big fan of Cheddar Jack cheez-its, but I'm not ashamed to eat those :P.

My latest guilty pleasure -- watching 'The Family Guy' late at night while eating a plate full of french fries, the frozen kind you fry yourself.

If I stop posting in the near future, I''ll likely be in a fat farm or recovering from open heart surgery.

New one for me...  Well not really new, as I've watched this off and on for a while, but it's funny nonetheless.

http://www.cheaters.com/

This show is great...  Real or fake, it's funny...

I think it's sorta like Jerry Springer in that there's just no way that the trash is acting that well, otherwise they'd have a career outside of being a criminal, but other times it seems like it may be scripted...  So I figure it's a mix of real and fake, but the real is real funny.

The host is fantabulous too.  Love watching the guy just really poorly ridicule the cheater on the cheatee's behalf.  He's the type of guy that I'm 100% positive lost in every "rip battle" he was ever in.  Even "Yo Mama" jokes probably confuse him.

He's great when he's in some confused cheater's face though with those camera lights blaring...  The show just makes me laugh.  I guess I have too much free time.

This is a thread that shouldn't have gone dormant.

Abba and Neil Diamond are two in the music world that I can't help but like.

Broadway musicals are another.  Even obscure ones.

This is a thread that shouldn't have gone dormant.

I couldn't agree more...

So Motley Crue released a new disk today.  Anyone out there buy it or willing to admit they bought it?!  One of my favorite bands of the 80's and still on my all time top 10.  Ratt and Bon Jovi (everything prior to and including 'Keep the Faith') are up there in my all time favorites as well.

Another guilty pleasure for me has to be Top Chef on Bravo.  Great cooks, awesome meals, pretty funny, and one hell of a hottie as a host!

Lastly, Cold Stone Creamery ice cream sundaes.  I could eat the 'Gotta Have It' size sundae any day of the week and twice on Sunday.  However, at about 1500 calories each, it wouldn't take me long to start putting on the lbs.

You know it really did feel that way.  I was looking for the great pumpkin, but I'll be happy with the Frankenberry.  I swear, it's 40 years since it was sold here and even then I'm not sure it wasn't just something we picked up on trips to Grand Forks (at the Piggly Wiggly, doncha know).
