Star Wars Dioramas and Displays / Re: Modular Cloud City
« on: January 23, 2005, 10:29 PM »
It's close, but looking at it the other day (two weeks after putting it on there) I realized there's one more "ring" to the octagons so that the center is actually red.

In the movie it's more centered on the floor, but here I had to stretch some of the octagonal walls to fit the hallway outside so the center had to shift a bit.

Still, yeah, it's pretty accurate.

Building the holding cell...

Always wear safety glasses when taking on a project of this size, even if you have to borrow them from a friend.

Where I started this week...I set out to finish the walls

I cut out "skins" of foam for the walls, and thin planks of foam to add the depth of the corrugated walls...

I've found the droids help out a lot with these repetitive steps. I tried to hire some Union Labor, but they took too many breaks.

After lots of cutting and gluing, we get...

Chewie looks pretty upset! I had hoped he would like it!!

Revenge of the Sith / Re: Celebration 3 Figure: Talking Darth Vader
« on: January 23, 2005, 05:11 AM »
JesseVader, I think the "I gotta have it" aspect of the Sacul figure is the George-freakin'-Lucas likeness...there was no chance a figure like that would ever be released to the retail world, and a figure of Lucas was one of those fanboy dreams for quite a while at that point. At least I'd heard it fantasized about more than I've heard people calling for a "Talking Vader" figure.

I have to say (against the grain here, it seems) that I am extremely underwhelmed by a Darth Vader figure as this year's Celebration Exclusive.

You almost have to guarantee that the parts will be a kitbash of various Vaders at best, a straight rehash at worst.

While a voice chip is nice, boosting the price to $15 certainly cancels out any benefit there.

At C2, the first thing I did was hop in line for Sacul. This time around I'm not even sure I'll be going. A figure the likes of which I'd never see otherwise could've easily made that a no-brainer. Yet another Vader just doesn't do it for me...even one that talks to me about being at C3.

As a memento for the Celebration, Vader has some merit. But as a chance to fill in one of those "They'll never make that" figures, this is a letdown for me.

Original Trilogy Collection / Re: $3 OTC
« on: January 12, 2005, 10:26 PM »
I was lucky enough to stumble on a Bespin Luke for three bucks just after Christmas.

I've seen a few OTC Generals and Bespin Leias at Target, but the WalMart figures sold out quick, leaving only some VOTC Han and Bens for seven bucks. I'll wait to see if they come down a little more, then I'll finally nab a Ben for a decent price.

Saga '02-'04 / Re: luke skywalker tatooine encounter variation ?
« on: January 7, 2005, 05:15 PM »
Every version I saw of him from 2003, 2004, DVD pack, and Millenium Falcon set had the knees and the boots the same. I haven't seen a correct version since the Commtech version.

Hope that helps.

The Jawa.com has been gracious enough to host some higher-res pictures of the first level. Clicky through here to see Cloud City closer than ever before...  :P

Incredible!!  What did you use to make the torture rack??  That is just one fantastic piece!!

Thanks! The rack is made mostly of a Jurassic Park 3 catapult (for the base--I searched long and hard for something appropriate-looking that the figure could pivot on top of, and this worked beautifully) and a Voltron-figure (I believe) rocket launcher for the body. To that I added generous amounts of foam and black posterboard to flesh it out. A couple of sliced up force pikes (a skiff guard and a spare Xizor one) were used for the prongs that jab Han.

The backboard Han is strapped to is black foamcore with foam detailing, and the missile launcher from the crappy POTF2 Deluxe Boba Fett. His feet strap in via the footholder piece from the POTJ Carbon Freezing Chamber.

Some figures I'd like to see again, off the top of my head...

Holo Sidious for sure
Muftak (I'm maybe a little biased on that one)
Saga Tusken Raider
Pote Snitkin (with new deco)
Ten Nunb (in red)
Death Star Droid (variant colors)
Ree-Yees (new deco)
Zuckuss
Amanaman
Oola
Jawa & Gonk
Admiral Motti

(and I like the repainted Spirit Obi-Wan idea, it has to be done eventually)

There are many other characters I'd like to see revisited, but most of them could really use a resculpt. After all, we don't want another Bib Fortuna on our hands...

Original Trilogy Collection / Re: 2005 Cantina Wave
« on: January 4, 2005, 07:10 PM »
well, I wasn't really looking for these yet, but I stumbled upon Feltipern and Myo at my Target this evening. Only one of each, but after looking at them for a while and really considering, I bought 'em.

I'm really happy with them. I hadn't been excited about this wave...all these Cantina figures with no Hem Dazon really makes me sad, but these guys are nice, and exactly what Cantina figures should be. I was surprised by the ball-socket neck joints, as well as the detailing on their little cups. The paint jobs are really good, too, that bodes well for the ROTS stuff.

I searched for Dannik but he wasn't there. I'm kind of glad, since I really didn't like the character to begin with, and the face-things don't appeal either. If he was there I would've had to do some real soul-searching (esp. since they cost 2 bucks more now.) I do that with Yarua everytime I see him (haven't caved...yet...) and I know I'll do it with that hosenose...

So, two out of two figures for 2005 that I definitely had to have. ROTS will be a big maybe, so I'm pretty much all done already.  :-[

Original Trilogy Collection / Re: Did OTC Do Well?
« on: December 30, 2004, 11:21 AM »
OTC is nearly wiped out from my area as well, indicating a good seller and a successful campaign. In fact, the only stuff that is really sitting here is the Hoth/Repack Saga waves from early in the year. OTC came and left on top of them.

It does make me leery of the lesson Hasbro will take from the success. While repacks may sell (the best of the best of the past nine years, really, the essential characters distilled in their best versions) what I think helped the line more was the instant variety. These were not 3x4-figures-a-case waves. When figures shipped in more than one case, they were mostly one-pers. The figures that did wind up sitting (generals, Bespin Leia, early Dagobah) were the heavily-packed ones. It may have made for a tough time finding figures, but when a new case was put out, chances were someone would buy the whole case. That's what made this line move, end of story.

VOTC was same-old-same-old, first assortment massively overshipped, subsequent assortments were harder to find. It all worked out (just as it does every year), but can't we finally understand (Hasbro and retailers, here "we" means "you") that to continue this practice, the first assortment must be shipped with a wider selection of figures. If that means holding up on sending them out until production can catch up, then you need to do a little tweaking of your lead time. It will result in better sales.

Cloud City is only going to be three levels tall--the Freezing Chamber will cap it off on top of the current level.

There will be room for Luke to knock Vader off the back of the Chamber at the top, and jump down to continue the duel along a separate gantry piece that I will build to fit on the back, a la the old Micro Bespin World sets. Consider that level 1 1/2.

Yeah, I was pretty much on top of Lando in that pciture, so it's a bit of forced perspective I think.

Here's a couple more of the rack for ya, JJ:

And another hallway shot. The door behind Lobot opens, and will lead to the detention cell where Chewie reassembles Threepio:
