The Last Jedi / Re: TLJ 3.75" Resistance Ski Speeder w/Poe Dameron
« on: September 2, 2017, 09:10 PM »
I picked one of these up on Friday, but still have yet to open it...  I kind of want to see how they function in the movie.  The box description gives a little blurb about the speeder, saying they predate the Rebellion (so they're old) and that the ski helps provide stability.  But with repulsorlift technology seeming to have been in common use in the SW universe for thousands of years, I wonder why a stabilizing ski would be needed for anything other than an interesting Hollywood effect.  Still, the toy looks neat and has some fun features like a "blow off" wing section, so I think I'll be happy with it.

The Last Jedi / Re: TLJ 3.75" Resistance A-Wing Fighter with Tallie
« on: September 1, 2017, 05:22 PM »
I picked up the new A-Wing this morning and just opened it.  Overall, I really like it!  The design is very much McQuarrie-inspired and looks almost exactly like his concept art for the A-Wing (so this may wind up being used as an R-22 Spearhead instead ;) ).  Lengthwise, the ship is actually slightly longer than the vintage A-Wing tooling, although the new ship is much more slender top to bottom.  I suspect it is under-scaled compared to the "actual" ship in the films, but it still looks with figures standing next to it.  Canopy opens to reveal a reasonably-detailed cockpit, the nose landing gear is retractable, and the missile launching feature easily hidden as the guns.  The Tallie figure has a nice sculpt to it, but I am not a fan of the 5-POA figure style and non-removable helmets.  I also purchased the Paige figure this morning, which looks quite nice with removable helmet and oxygen mask, and am thinking about using that in the A-Wing instead of Tallie.  The TLJ A-Wing is superior to the Rebels one we got last year, but still falls short of the classic vintage tooling - nevertheless I am happy with it  :)

The Last Jedi / Re: TLJ 3.75" TIE Silencer w/Kylo Ren
« on: September 1, 2017, 05:09 PM »
Just opened the TIE Silencer I got this morning a few minutes ago.  Overall this is a nice toy!  I suspect it is undersized, but the toy is still rather large and sizes in well-enough with the "properly" scaled TIE Interceptor and big-wing TIE Fighter from a few years ago.  The model has some heft to it.  The cockpit is rather detailed (compared with other new ships since the Disney takeover) with the seat, control counsels, foot pedals, and other controls shown.  I really like the pop-out missile launchers in that they are standard spring-loaded missiles (NOT Nerf darts!) and conceal well within the wings.  I do not have the Force Link system yet, so cannot operate the lights and sounds.  My only gripes?  Yet again the wings are somewhat rubbery and splay a little out of shape...  I can see warpage being a factor over the long term.  It also would be great if the lights and sounds could be operated without the Force Link system.  Otherwise, this is a decent Star Wars ship and quite a bit better, IMHO, than the 3.75" First Order Special Forces TIE that was released for the TFA film.

The Black Series 6" Figures / Re: 6" Black Series Rey with Speeder
« on: September 1, 2017, 01:46 PM »
Picked up Rey's Speeder Friday morning at Target and opened it that evening.  This is a fantastic vehicle!  Lots of opening and removable panels on the speeder to expose the engine details.  The fit pedals and control sticks move, the flaps by the exhaust nacelles are adjustable.  Lots of small details and weathering too.  The real cargo net is a nice touch and the junk piece secures nicely to the side of the vehicle with some pegs.  A little better painting on the junk would have made the parts stand out more, but it's still ok.  The Rey figure is nice as well, but unfortunately the headgear is not completely removable...  But as I have the other 6" Rey figures w/o headgear, it is no big deal.  Thanks to the figure's articulation, it can be made to sit realistically on the vehicle.  While this was a relatively minor vehicle in TFA, this speeder is a beautiful display piece and definitely worth getting!

Picked this up this morning at Target...  Well, not the SDCC exclusive release, but the general Black Series version (labeled as vehicle #02, behind the FO TIE Fighter from a couple years ago).  I decided I couldn't wait any longer and opened it.  Lots of opening engine panels and detail features on the speeder and in a nice touch, no wheels underneath!  The front "hood" and two rear panels open.  The windshield is easily removable to insert figures and there is a little hole on the rear deck to better secure R2D2.  Unfortunantly, given the confines of the vehicle, it will be difficult to insert the Obi Wan Kenobi figure due to that figure's rubberized robes. The Luke figure is basically the same as the ANH version released last year in Wave 6 but comes with a different head sculpt.  The poncho, binoculars, hat, light saber, and rifle accessories are nice and accurate inclusions.  My only real gripe is that the vehicle seems a tad underscaled, particularly the rear deck.  I've seen the full-sized Prop and the little 1/6 scale model used for filming ANH which both seem a little larger...

Overall, it's a great vehicle and sensible addition to the Black Series vehicle lineup.  It is definitely worth getting!

The Last Jedi / Re: Force Friday II - September 1, 2017
« on: September 1, 2017, 12:15 PM »
I actually had a rather good experience this morning...  After doing the midnight toy-run thing at Toys R Us for the TFA toy releases two years ago (and winding up being rather disappointed) I instead opted to hit a Target store right when they opened this morning (Friday) and was able to score everything I had wanted and then some.

I was one of about 8 people awaiting the doors to open at Target this morning...  A big teenage kid got his monthly exercise running to the toy aisle to grab just about every 6" Black Series figure he could, but I was able to get the A-Wing, TIE Silencer, Ski-Speeder, the 3.75" Luke, plus a few other 3.75" figures that looked pretty neat.  Then I went to the other display at the rear of the store and scored some more of the 6" Black Series figures that the teenage kid didn't get, including TFA Luke (who looks like he could substitute for a Moses action figure :P ) as well as the 6" scale vehicles including Rey's tractor and Luke's land speeder.

I am not a completist collector by any means, so it doesn't matter if I need to get an entire wave or something, and just have specific items that I target for my collection.  I'm just happy I was able to get everything I wanted in one swoop, though I'm not sure my credit card was ;)

Here's a YouTube review of the actual product (not mine)...  It looks cooler than I thought - sort of a cross between a B-Wing and a Podracer :P  Definitely looks to be worth getting!

The Last Jedi / Re: TLJ 3.75" Resistance A-Wing Fighter with Tallie

Here's a YouTube video of someone that has the TLJ A-Wing...  While not as intricate as the old tooling, it looks FAR better than the Rebels A-Wing from last year, and even many of the  TFA vehicles...  Then again, I've long been a fan of the A-Wing going back to the old X-Wing games in the 1990s, so I have some bias  ;)

Star Wars Anthology / Re: Rogue One (SPOILER FREE)
« on: April 7, 2017, 07:05 PM »
I just got the standard Blu-Ray & DVD combo pack (I still use a DVD player, but eventually plan to get a Blu Ray...)  I still greatly enjoyed the movie even on the small screen.

TV-9D9 / Re: Star Wars Rebels - Season 3 (Spoilers)
« on: March 20, 2017, 03:26 PM »
Wasn't able to catch the full episode, but did find an excerpt of the Obi Wan/Darth Maul confrontation scene elsewhere online, which was what I really wanted to see.  I loved it.  Stephen Stanton did an awesome job recreating Alec Guinness' voice and the OT Obi Wan's character.  Despite the fact that the character was animated, it was a believable characterization that fits in with the OT films.  The more "limited" fight seemed very fitting as well...  It plays into Episode IV well where his fight with Vader was pretty static.  It would not have made sense for him and Maul to have taken out across the desert in a wild fight.  Obi Wan is older and presumably has had time to reflect and practice his sword arts into a fine craft...  I enjoyed the reference to him guarding Luke - the "Chosen One."

I came across the new AT-ST at a local Walmart today - the first time I've seen one in person.  The packaging is attractive and its great to see a proper 3.75" vehicle back on the shelves withou the nerf cannons ;)  However, the new AT-ST looks almost identical to the Legacy Collection version.  I have a TLC version MIB plus another loose as well as the K-Mart one.  No need to get this one I felt...

The Black Series 6" Figures / Re: Walgreens Black Series 6" C-3PO
« on: February 23, 2017, 03:25 PM »
I was in a road trip for work today and found 3 of the Walgreens-exclusive C3P0 figures at the Walgreens store in Patterson, CA.  I've been searching the stores in my area for weeks, but never found anything until today.  I've had good luck finding figures in Patterson before, and once again, it didn't let me down :)

I'm personally divided about these new 40th Anniversary figures...  I do like the look of the carded figures, but since I've been collecting the Black Series 6" figures since the beginning, I have all of these figures, save the newest ones like the Tusken Raider, Jawa, etc.  I have Luke, Leia, Han, R2D2, C3PO, Vader, Stormtroopers, etc.  Do I get a set of the vintage carded figures or just stick with what I have?  I'm tempted just to stick with what I have, though I'll probably get another Han and of course the new-tooling figures  ;)

I've preordered both the single Baze & Chirrut figures as well and am very glad Entertainment Earth gave us the option.  I did not want to have to buy a full wave of mostly duplicate figures to only get a couple new ones...

I was at a Walmart in Bakersfield, CA yesterday and saw several dozen 6" figure boxes all up on the top shelf, but oriented so I couldn't see which ones they were (naturally).  Being a somewhat short guy, and not wanting to bother store staff with a silly request, I went and got a patio chair from the nearby garden section, which gave me plenty of height to check out the hidden figures... Unfortunately nothing new, just a bunch of the wave with Dir. Krennic and TFA C3PO.
