Watto's Junk Yard / Re: Official Movie Thread
« on: August 14, 2009, 09:18 AM »
Seeing it tonight, man.  Can't wait.  I'm going in pretty much blind except for what I've seen in trailers.  But the critical praise so far really has me excited about it.

I always heard Frasier was Gung Ho.  Don't know who "Sgt. Stone" is...

Oh...and Dressel hates Transformers.   :o

I didn't hate it.

I despised it.

You can get a Playstation 3 bundled with two fantastic games for $399.   ;)

I haven't bought any comedies I can think of... just stuff I'd watch a bunch of times over.

There are chapter stops on Blu-ray.  I haven't noticed a single one that didn't have them.

It's strange where these rumors come from.  Another I've heard is "You can't fast forward through the previews."  Complete BS.  Of the few I've seen with movie trailers, I haven't had one where I couldn't skip them.

In my experience Blu-ray offers everything DVD offers, plus a bunch of stuff DVD isn't capable of.

On a 26" TV you won't see much difference.  And as for prices, $30 is an exaggeration.  Check out Amazon's Bestsellers in Blu-ray.  Lots to be had under $20, and the only $30 regular movies I see are Taken (includes 2 discs) and Transformers 2.

I got a Playstation 3 at launch and have been enjoying movies on Blu-ray in high-def since the following March, when I dropped way too much money on an HD-TV.  Blu-ray v/s upscaled DVD is night and day.  I can't even watch DVDs anymore unless it's animated like The Simpsons.  Live action just looks soft.  And the difference between Blu-ray and broadcast HD is even greater, due to compression artifacts.  They're not as bad on FiOS, but awful on DirecTV.

I think you'll be thrilled with your purchase if you're a movie buff.  My best advice to you is to also invest in a decent home theater system.  Movies are significantly more immersive with crystal clear Dolby or DTS.  I have a 7.1 receiver but only have 5 speakers + subwoofer hooked up due to the shape of the room.  Unfortunately I got mine before HDMI, so I had to be creative with the wiring.  But it still does a fantastic job.  I have Netflix, so I'm loving a new Blu-ray every few days.  Just fantastic.

There was a big battle in the school in the last movie too, wasn't there?

A Clockwork Orange may have been a better movie than book... that's because the whole book was written in first person from Alex in his future-speak.  Tough to sift through parts of it.  Still it was a good book.  But the movie was brilliant.  The movie was very faithful to the book, only omitting one major scene I noticed.  Ending was different, though.  The book went a few more years into the future, while the movie stopped after Alex was rewarded.

Watto's Junk Yard / PSWCS fundraiser to benefit wounded war vets
« on: July 28, 2009, 12:25 PM »
Hey guys - this was posted on the JD front page a while back, but I know a lot of guys don't go there too often, so I wanted to post something about it here.

PSWCS is selling these "challenge coin" style medallions to benefit a charity called Operation Ward 57.  OW57 buys comfort items for wounded soldiers returning from Iraq and Afghanistan who end up at Walter Reed.  We hope to raise around $5500 for the charity by selling out.  100% of the proceeds go to the charity.  They're $10 each shipped.

The medallion is limited to a 1-time run of 1000.  We got Lucasfilm's permission to produce the medallions, so it's an authorized Star Wars collectible.  It even has the little copyright date on it.  And they're AWESOME.  First off, they're HUGE!  They're like old-style silver dollar big.  1.75" diameter is way bigger than it sounds.  They're also very hefty, and they're protected by an enamel coating.  Super high-quality stuff.  The artwork was done by Mike Nair, a graphic artist in PSWCS who did just a phenomenal job.  We're all thrilled with the final product.  And we've gotten nothing but positive reactions from our buyers.

If we sell out, we're looking at doing another one next year.  But we still have about 300 remaining.  So I'm hoping some of my friends here will help out.  You won't be disappointed, and it's for a great cause!

Here's the sale site:  http://www.pswcs.com/OperationWard57
