Revenge of the Sith / Re: C3 Hasbro Q & A
« on: April 22, 2005, 06:03 PM »
A few years back (actually when it was still "Kenner" making the POTF2 figures), I came up with this idea for the "Star Wars Random Response Generator" to send to these conventions so that way, Hasbro could save money and not send three reps to these shows that would do the same thing that the machine did.

Here are the responses I had that it could spit out (and sadly, these responses are pretty much still what they give out today):

1.  "We are aware of the demand for such an item and the possibility exists in the future."

2.  "We are aware that not everyone was able to easily locate this item, and we are looking at ways to reincorporate it into the line for the future."

3.  "There are no plans for such an item at this time."

4.  "We are always looking for exciting new ways to offer unique items under the Star Wars brand."

5.  "We feel that there is insufficient demand for such an item at an affordable price point at this time."

And, I guess, now we can add...

6.  "We have many exciting things planned for 2006, but we cannot tell them to you right now."

7.  "We know there is a great demand for these items but the focus is on the new film right now."

8.  "When you take into account the costs associated with such a large ticket item, it would depend on a retailer taking it on as an exclusive item and placing a sufficient order."

The thing that gets me is that NOBODY at these little Q&A things ask the questions people really want to know, or even call Hasbro on the fact that they are making TOYS and are not responsible for national security with all their cryptic "we can't tell you or we'd have to kill you" 007 bull****.  They're so used to people kissing their asses that when someone (as in the JD staff at San Diego last fall, and these guys were the first ones I'd ever seen call Hasbro out publically, and thanks again to the staff here for that) does actually ask them a tough question that they can't answer with one of their above stock responses, they get flustered and show that they don't have the slightest idea of professionalism and fan relations.

Keep in mind that (although it was under another regime) this is the same company that once angrily responded to an inquiry at a convention, "WE DON'T CARE WHAT COLLECTORS THINK!"

I bet you a nickel it's 12 new Target exclusive Clone Troopers that will be released one per month, every month, for the next year.  They will be limited to three per store, and will cost 24.99.  These sculpts will also be based on the POTJ Sneak Preview Clone Trooper, since Hasbro is obviously losing money on those super articulated bodies at this point.

Can you tell how irritated I'm getting with all this exclusive crap, especially now that we've reached the realm of non-holo/silver commemorative figures?   ::)

Seriously, I'm sure it's probably something either really amazing or really underwhelming.  The kid in me wants to see an AT-TE or (at the very least) a Sith Infiltrator.  The cynical cranky adult in me expects to see a Millennium Falcon repaint or a box set of Epic Force figures.  Or, since RS is the only site that seems to be mentioning it at all, it's probably a Hasbro shrine to Lord Philip.   :P

Comedy Edit:  It's Gwyneth Paltrow's head.  :D

I just completed an absolutely wonderful deal with Dave; it could not have gone any smoother.  Super fast shipping, excellent packing, and great communication.  All around perfect trade!  Thanks Dave! :)

Revenge of the Sith / Re: Wal-Mart "Early Bird" Exclusive
« on: April 21, 2005, 12:20 PM »
There are two Wal-Marts within fifteen minutes of one another in my area (which is depressing in and of itself, but I digress) and both of them have sections for these that are literally packed to the limit.  There are at least 50 and possibly more at each store and since moving them into an aisle from the tent sale, I have yet to see a single one change positions.

People are not buying these because, as I said when this was first announced, the reason the EB promotion was so successful in the 1970s was that at that time, there were no SW action figures to buy as an alternative.  To get them, you HAD to buy the EB package.  Even today the EB package is looked back on as being a really audacious promotion that succeeded in spite of logic and an abundance of what is often referred to as "testicular fortitude."

Now, you've got the same promotion for a different age, but the difference is that there is not as much demand for SW toys as there was back in 1977 (relatively speaking), since there are at least 1000 different things being sold alongside this new EB kit which require absolutely no waiting for 6-8 weeks (or more) and are infinitely cheaper.  And to be honest, I'm right there with mosnab in thinking that the average non-collector doesn't know what the hell this thing is; all they see is an envelope with dated artwork for a ridiculously high price.  Why pay 30 dollars for this when you can go three feet down the aisle and get 6 figures right now for the same cost?

This exclusive was poorly planned, poorly executed, and is selling equally poor.  Even K-Mart, the raging bastion of Chapter 11 that it is, got an exclusive that you can actually tangibly touch in their establishments (the ones that are still open, of course).  Target gets two figures that create a whole lot of buzz and attention and actually promoted these items (well, they did with Vader; who knows what cluster**** awaits with the Clone), TRU gets a Yoda that was equally promoted and had a lot of buzz, and WM sits on announcing theirs until a few days before it goes on sale, Hasbro doesn't actually reveal the figures until after it goes on sale, and in the end, all they got was a crappy (yes, I said it) envelope that nobody but die-hard collectors are going to buy.

Oh, and the other WM exclusive items (the Titanium series) are just flying off the shelves here too.  There have to be at least 400 of the various things hanging around collecting dust.

And you know, the conspiracy side of my personality makes me think that this Early Bird disaster (and regardless of what you think of the figures or the coolness/lameness of the item itself, it is, on a retail level, a disaster) could end up being a really bad harbinger of the future of the SW line as a whole after ROTS has run its course.  Keep in mind that WM is the number one toy retailer in the country (this sickens me, but still...), and if you want to see what kind of effects WM can have on any company, just Google "WalMart Predatory Business Practices" or something like that.

I'm not saying that WM will drive Hasbro into bankruptcy, but when WM sees how poorly this EB stuff has done, I have a feeling it's going to take a whole lot of placating on the part of Hasbro to get them to carry SW toys in the next few years.

I almost forgot, I cant believe how much some of these pieces have appreciated.

Yeah, it's really mind blowing to see how much some of the older pieces are going for these days.  All I used to see when I would walk into any retailer (in the days before I started collecting the line; I was still in my "This is going to fail so bad, but I'll buy Boba Fett.  And Sidious.  Luke won't hurt either.  Oh, Padme is nice.  I can't pass up Vader.  And Dooku." and so on phase) was Jango Fett, often for about 7.50 on clearance, ten deep on the pegs, and now that figure is one of the three I'm still missing and can't find anywhere for below 20 bucks before shipping.   :-\

I'm hoping that Hasbro will do another "recard" wave that gets some of the harder to find figures back into circulation (I'm hoping Unmasked Vader and Yoda are amongst these, as they are the other two I'm missing myself; but I think Boba Fett and the Stormtrooper/IG-88/Sing wave should be out and about and abundant too), but with several of these making their second appearance in the line (and since they just recarded the first Vader last year), I'm afraid it won't end up happening.

This ST/IG/Sing wave has me really confused though, as I can't imagine why they haven't shown up anywhere after the 04/02 rollout of ROTS stuff.  I figured that they were sitting on them in the back after the "NO STAR WARS STOCKING" rumors that started in mid-March, but as yet, I've not seen any of them again.  I was extraordinarily lucky to get the Sing and IG-88 at retail, and the Stormtrooper for cost (believe that or not) in an Ebay BIN deal, but I've yet to see them at all besides the one sighting at a backroad WM in February.  For a Stormtrooper to be that difficult to find is really unreasonable.

Other Collectibles / Re: Star Wars "Role Play" Items
« on: April 19, 2005, 04:09 PM »
My modus operandi with the lightsabers was that I wanted one of every color and then I would be done.  So, I got the Episode I Maul and Qui-Gon sabers, the Episode II Anakin saber in the Clone Wars packaging, and that was pretty much it for me.

The more I thought about it though, the more I figured I should get a regular red lightsaber, so I picked up the ROTS Dooku saber a week or so ago at Wal-Mart.  It's actually different than the AOTC version, since this one has this motion activated lightsaber "WOM!" (that's my sad attempt at typing the typical lightsaber "whoosh" noise) that annoys the piss out of me every time I move it a fraction of an inch.  Still, it's a red saber, and the handle is cool, so unless they do a Mace Windu with an accurate handle (since photos make it look like they're still using that pseudo-Maul handle that he had in TPM photography), I'm finished with the role play stuff.

Just a quick update to the Anakin/Vader debacle I posted about earlier in this thread: according to my mother, I received a letter from Hasbro with a coupon for THREE DOLLARS OFF any Hasbro toy.  Of course, I immediately thought that it would probably say "Expires June 13, 1997" or something along those lines, but I'll know for sure once I see it myself.

I am still fully expecting to find some weird restriction that says "Only valid on purchases made in the state of Nebraska on the Tuesday following the Fourth of July weekend at Ted's Gas and Gulp off of Route 66" or some other similar hoop to jump through.   ::)

As for Grievous (to get this back on track), I can't get a lightsaber to stay in his hands either with or without the rubber bands, and I have been trying.  Hasbro's cheap ass plastic strikes again.  Between the Grievous rubber hands that can't hold his weapons and the Anakin/Vader nonbendy feet, I'm thinking that Hasbro Direct is employing those monkey puppets that StarWarsShop.com had during the initial fiasco at their site these days.

The movie, without a doubt.  The toys/merchandise doesn't even come close.  If this was some bizarre parallel world where SW toys were never released, it would not bother me a bit.  The movies are what I love, first and foremost, and they are all that matters to me.  If I lost it all tomorrow, I'd be sad, but knowing that I could go out and buy the DVDs of the five films, I would be fine in the long-run.

That said, if they do a good, large, plush Yoda along the lines of the Applause one from a few years back (that I never got), I would be a very happy panda.  ;D

Clone Wars '03-'05 / Re: EE exclusive Clone Trooper 4-packs!
« on: April 19, 2005, 03:47 PM »
What is comes down to (when taking into account what Hasbro charges for these things) is that Hasbro is trying to minimize costs while maximizing profits, since a huge chunk of the sales of a SW toy go to LFL.  With GI Joe, they can make a figure with a larger amount of articulation and higher quality plastic, throw two of them in a package, and charge a buck more than a SW figure, and make more money because they own GI Joe and see all the profits from said toy.  With SW, I don't know the percentages, but they don't see as much.  Hence, they're going to spend less money, use a cheaper quality plastic, and put less effort into SW toys because they want to get every dollar that they possibly can.

The Clone four packs that EE got were a cheap "do" for Hasbro.  They got to reuse a mold they had lying around (no tooling costs) and that was most likely being produced anyway for those Vader cases and as the basis for the ROTS Clone figure (mostly), do minimal paint application, and use the pretense of a "much requested figure" to gouge for a higher overall price.  The fact that EE charged as much as they did for these doesn't surprise me at all in retrospect, as an EE price is usually retail plus 25% anyway.  Or, in the case of the four packs, retail plus 75%.

Hasbro is making a killing off these four packs and they probably spent about 1/50th of the price of one four pack in the actual development of the item.  The fact that they have (apparently) failed to include the peg holes on the feet and/or the large rifles shows that they put as little effort into these as they possibly could.  I would imagine that the cost/benefit analysis of these four packs is akin to the old stories about compact discs costing about 3 bucks to produce and they retail for 15 dollars (showing my age here, big time).

There's also an excellent commentary (related to Earth Day) in the latest "Fried Circuits" column at T'Bone's SW Universe that talks about how needlessly elaborate packaging is these days and how, at least for openers, a plain white mailer box is a lot more environmentally friendly than the fifteen million twist ties, rubber bands, plastic trays, inserts, and bubbles that are on the average figure these days.

I'm going to go back to hugging my tree now.   :)

Watto's Junk Yard / Re: Creepy Collecter/Scalper Sightings

What was really sad was when I attempted to speak to a few people at the WM I hit on MM a few weeks back, only to have them look at me as if I was a massive weirdo freak for attempting to be friendly.  This particular WM hadn't put any new stuff out and a lot of people were just standing about and I tried to make casual conversation, but no dice.

I think it was partly the fact that they didn't put anything out at midnight that made me leave, but it was also partially the fact that even a simple question like, "Do you guys go to FILL IN LOCAL SCHOOL HERE?" was met with a stare like I had urinated on their grandmother's tombstone.

I am always friendly when I am in the aisle, to the point of me not getting what I came for so some kid can (I still recall the Episode I Qui-Gon incident, a good time; and the Slave Leia I let a kid have the last one of in 1997 only so he could turn to his mother while walking away and ask how much he could sell it for on the internet), and I consider myself a polite and well-mannered individual (most of the time, in public at least), but some people out there are just downright rude in this day and age.

I also never saw the point of people that would run to a toy section for any reason.  To me, I already feel like everyone is laughing at me for being a grown man buying toys and I don't need to incur further humor by running to the back for a toy I'm going to be sick of seeing on pegs in two months anyway.  And any time the words "Who is rare?" or "What is the most valuable one?" come out of someone's mouth, I politely say "I don't know" and turn and leave.

And am I the only person on the planet pissed off that they got a Palpatine with a blue lightsaber?  I'd trade mine for a correct red saber in a NY minute if I hadn't already opened the blue one to begin with.  But yet, in three months it'll be "VHTF EMPORER PALPATEEN W/ BLUE LIHGTSABER MOC RARE" on Ebay.  One man's trash is another man's treasure, I suppose.

Other Collectibles / Re: Star Wars "Force Battlers" Figures
« on: April 16, 2005, 11:36 AM »
Despite my belief that this line is going to flop bigger than Rosie O'Donnell on a Miami beach, I picked up the Vader at a local WM yesterday.  It has its good points (it's Vader and it's kind of neat looking, I suppose), but it also has its bad points (that shield and some very strange articulation choices between the arms).

Quick review (I guess):

-THE GOOD:  The sculpt is nice, very anime and stylized.  He stands on his own reasonably well and that's always a plus.  He can hold his lightsaber with both hands, and the shield can be taken off and thrown into a box, never to see the light of day again.  There is some really interesting articulation that you can't really see in the package on his arms.  Basically, if this makes sense, he has two cut joints in his lower arm: one is the usual at the elbow, and the next is less than a half inch away where his gloves meet the forearms.  He's also got cut wrist articulation, so that's three points on each arm from the elbow down, which I hadn't seen before.  The lightsaber is nice, and is more along the lines of the 12" dolls in terms of appearance and quality, if a bit smaller.

-THE BAD:  The cloth cape (the outer one) doesn't have the same care and quality in its stitching that other Vaders at this scale or smaller (Jedi Force Vader and the GH Vader) have had over the past few years.  Why they chose to do a plastic inner cape and a cloth outer cape is beyond me, but it's there.  There is no articulation in his right leg at all (other than the squeeze thing), and his left leg only has a hip joint (but this is good since he can stand on his own).

-THE WTF?:  The shield is ridiculous.  The action feature is silly, and pointless (although I guess that's the point of these figures).  The biggest WTF? moment is the lack of a ball jointed shoulder on the left arm while the right arm has a ball joint.  I can't figure this one out at all, especially since the Jedi Force Vader had this on both shoulders.  Plus there's the overall pointless nature of these figures ever being made, so there you go.

Overall, it's a fairly cool piece as far as just looking at it and saying, "Hey, that's an interesting looking Vader" on your shelf, but as far as "This makes me want to collect this whole line, how awesome!", it scores a big fat zero.  If you've got 10 bucks to burn and you like Vader, go ahead and pick it up.  If you're wavering, go to the next aisle and pick up the Jedi Force Vader, which is a much cooler toy overall and a lot more fun.  Just be sure to buy it before clearances, because I doubt this one will be sticking around in the mess of Obi-Wans, Grievii, and Anakins (I had to dig through eight pegs to find one Vader).

As incoherent and Burroughs-esque as this post has been, it's my thoughts on this figure.

I'm actually thinking about picking up an Anakin and an Obi-Wan as a birthday gift for my cousin.  She's a big Hayden Christensen fan, and she's been talking about wanting a generic Hayden figure to put on her bookcase at home.  I figure I can get her an awesome birthday gift, hopefully bring a smile to her face, and have someone else see how great these are.

It looks like the wave 2 of ROTS-ish Unleashed is back on the Amazon site, listed as in-stock and shipping in 2-3 days.  I really wish they would update that site more than they do.  Half of the stuff listed on the pages is "Not yet released" and the rest is "Out of stock."

Other Collectibles / Re: Unleashed Again
« on: April 15, 2005, 11:34 AM »
The same thing happened to me, mosnab.  I added all three of the wave to my cart and everything was fine up until I got to the final confirmation page, where I got the "Estimated Ship Date: June 15, 2005" message.  So, I went ahead and cancelled the order, as I've had many similar situations on Amazon/TRU where I get the email in about two months time saying something along the lines of, "We apologize for the inconvenience, but the item(s) you ordered are no longer available from our distributor."

All three of the figures (at least when I was looking around) are no longer listed on the main ROTS/SW store pages either.  I was only able to find the Vader/Palp-Yoda through the links you provided, and Ventress only through clicking a "People who bought the items in your cart" link on one of those pages.

On a completely unrelated note, I'd just like to tell everyone again how great the Unleashed Obi-Wan and Anakin figures are when you put them together.  Even if you're not a regular Unleashed collector, these two figures make one of the nicest displays you could ever hope for in your SW collection.  The Grievous is great too, but for me to see so many of the Anakins and Bens hanging around on pegs is disappointing, as they are, taken together, the nicest and coolest Unleashed figures that have been done in the line, period.  I'm not trying to "thin out the pegs" for future waves (if I did that, I would have to beg people to buy Securas/Bossks/Tuskens), but I'm just wanting to let people know that there are two really cool toys on the pegs right now that I think a lot of people are overlooking.

Revenge of the Sith / Re: When will the clearances begin?
« on: April 14, 2005, 08:33 PM »
I remember the Episode I clearance storm fairly well, as it seemed to hit and dissipate on a store by store basis.  I recall Amazon (before TRU joined them) going on a rock bottom sale spree in December of 1999 (naturally they only had one thing I needed: a 12" scale Watto for 5 bucks shipped), but most of the retailers near me who will remain nameless (Wal-Mart) took a long time to clearance things out in some cases, while going to the bottom of price ranges fairly quickly at others (hence my Dancing Jar Jar which cost me the grand total of 4 bucks).

When it comes to Saga, I don't recall seeing anything clearanced to be quite honest.  The stuff just kind of disappeared on a slow basis and the only things I ever saw marked down were the Deluxe Force Flippers of Dooku and Obi-Wan, and the occasional Zam Wessel doll.  Other than that, it was here one day and gone the next.

ROTS, on the other hand, seems like a line that is really going to depend on the movie itself moreso than the other two films.  With TPM, you had a huge buzz before the movie came out just because it was Star Wars.  With Saga, you had another buzz, but at the same time, you had OT characters mixed in here and there.  With ROTS, it's all characters from that film, a lot of people who didn't like the first two being cautious about this one, and more Vader heads per square yard than any previous movie.  I think that a lot of the more casual adults are taking a "wait and see" attitude about the toys at this point, but depending on how great/bad the film is, we could see a lot of stuff get bought up quickly, or we could see Obi-Wan and Anakin staring at us all summer.

I have a feeling that Grievous is going to be the absence in the clearance aisle however.  I belong to another non-SW forum that is absolutely nuts over him and people are trying like crazy to find ANYTHING that has to do with Grievous.  Not for investing or scalping or anything, they just think the concept behind him is cool, the cartoon made him into this massive badass, and the toys of him (with the exception of the Exploding one and the Wheel Bike packin) have been outstanding in terms of sculpt and detail).

That said, I don't see any clearances happening on a large scale until after Christmas.  I can see "Buy 2 get 1 Free" sales happening, but other than that, I think the prices will stay in the current range until the DVD has come out and they can't capitalize on anything tying in to the sales anymore.
