I'd say I'm still happier with at least 2 VOTC figures more than any of the Evolutions figures.  Stormie and Chewbacca all the way there...  And honestly I'd say I think that Pilot Obi-Wan and SA Clone sculpts are nicer (in my eyes) as well, just in a general sense.

That said, the Evoltuions sets are outstanding to me in most every respect.  They each have some flaws...  little gripes that really are the kinda stuff that Hasbro does that just pisses you off enough to think something isn't perfect.

For instance on the Anakin set, E3 Anakin's head can't tilt down enough and E2 Anakin doesn't have poseable ankles (and they HAVE ankle molds from the Secret Ceremony figure, why not just use those even to save a penny?).  Also the Anakin set lacks 2 blades which is flat out asinine and frustrating in my opinion.  Also Vader's saber can't clip to his belt yet it can on the VOTC figure.  Little **** like that is annoying and pretty much excuseless.  I mean, how hard is it to make 3 saber blades, 3 hilts that clip to belts.  Problem solved.  They have the molds even!   ::)

And on the CLone set, the lacking articulation at the waist for two of the troopers is probably the most irritating aspect but I'd say the lack of an E11 is equally annoying.  I'm actually a little down on the gun sculpts too (love the big Sandie gun though), as they sorta don't look right with the other guns but I digress.

The Sith set turned out to be probably my favorite.  I'd have dug sabers with removable blades and clippable hilts though, and a 2nd head for Palpatine (neutral) perhaps.  Without a doubt though, they're the 3 best articulated figures out of all the Sith sets.  They're all SA minus ball/socket torsoes, and that's pretty great considering the other 2 Evolution sets had articulation lacking on each figure save for one.  Maul's arms are passable, but Palpatine and Dooku are just perfect (and I have to say that Dooku even won me over with that great ROTS sculpt out there already...  plus that figure's good for his death scene if you want).

The Clone set though is damn close in 2nd or even tied simply because it's army-builder focused.  The grey set looks more condusive to my obsession but the Yellow set is pretty good too since you can make your E2 Clone a pilot instead of a Commander.

If I had to pick a single figure I love the most though, it's the Sandtrooper.  Lacking articulation aside, I'm a classic trilogy fan first and foremost so a near-super articulated army builder like this is great.  His cannon kicks much ass and I'm all set to turn some of these guys into grunts and send their pauldrons off to my VOTC Stormie army as Field Officer Pauldrons.

So to wrap up, the Sith set's currently getting my seal of approval as the best overall set as far as quality/effort.  The best figure in my POV is the Sandtrooper just because I love Classic Trilogy army builders.  Why not just re-use the VOTC Stormie's sculpt though and slap a new belt and pauldron on it?  Voila...  Saves the cost of all the mold tooling they needed to make the figure.  Just make a pack, a belt, a gun, and pauldron you can adapt to the VOTC sculpt...  But I digress.

Buddy of mine got me the Lava figs and I'm very thankful for that...  It's gonna be all I can do to snag a Clone 5-pack and Shadowtrooper I'm thinking so the Lava figs "out of the way" gives me some focus on that 5-pack right now.

Hopefully I can get a couple of the Trooper...  Pricey as it is, I'd like a 4-man team of these just because they strike me as a special ops kind of team.

Somehow I think pmundheim's thinking along the same lines?  Paul, what say ye?

I'm not horribly un-impressed.

Probably the most apt way to describe this set.  Not horribly unimpressive.

Customs Community and Group Projects / Re: Say it ain't so!
« on: October 6, 2005, 12:47 AM »
Personally I'm a huge detractor of selling customs  on Ebay unless you're in dire straights.  To me, you're not helping the hobby when you're in it to profit like that...  I noticed multiple people who "mass produce" customs to sell posting their wares here and there, and like you mentioned above Ripley, they don't advertise the auction but they ultimately are advertising themselves and they give about Jack and **** back to the community as a whole (and I believe Jack just got on the short bus out of town).

These are the people who, when you critique their work or have a comment about it, they basically don't reply...  They'll have 90+ threads at any given place and really the only time you hear from them is when they're showing something new off or when they think they can "profit" from you wanting to buy something of theirs.  It's really total BS if you ask me.

Like I said, I think custom selling should be something you do if you're in dire straights for cash, are clearing out stuff (IE: not a planned sale basically), or if you do things that aren't 100% necessarilly a "Star Wars item", kind of like the little diorama bits Owen Driscoll's made...

A Jedi with a random generic head on it and a paintjob though...  Or resin kits for figures?  You're crossing a line IMO.

And ultimately selling Customs IS illegal despite anyone's personal opinion of right or wrong.  The law dictates it's infringement on LFL's rights and it is.

The negatives mass custom sellers have go beyond that though...  It spawns a problem of bootlegging.  This is something I've noticed more and more common in the vintage market, and even into the modern market (saw a custom "Target" Clone being touted as the real deal and there's a problem).  And like was said above, these people don't want to give anything back into the hobby.  You comment on their stuff they ignore you.  You ask a question and they won't answer because they want you to buy, not make your own.

Selling stuff isn't something I do, even if I needed cash I think.  I'd part with pieces in my collection first which I've not really had to do save for some vintage some years back I had to sell...  To me though customizing's something I only want people to learn about and get into themselves rather than feeling they need to buy from people.  I've yet to meet anyone incapable of picking up this hobby and really getting the hang of it.  It's a shame there are these people doing "sly" advertising at forums rather than being a better part of the hobby as a whole.  I suppose it's not a far cry from the scalper lurking in the forums to find out what's hitting where and when though.

If I'm not mistaken it goes OT, Shoot-out, and back to OT if necessary...  *shrugs*

Pens got spanked, that sucked.  They had the Devils number early and should've won that game but didn't capitalize.  Crosby played pretty great though overall as did some others, but once they let Brodeur beat them mentally he just handled the game smoothly the rest of the night and they were lucky to get that one goal much less what they needed to tie it up.

Lots of penalties and I for one am glad...  As feared though our D and goaltending are our weak points, at least judging by tonight's game.  The O did everything right but crash the net/park someone in front...  They were explosive and pounding NJ with shots but just didn't get it done and it bit them in the ass ultimately.  A thoroughly disappointing loss for me. :(  Oh well, Canes on Friday.

Wow, nice pics Jared...

The set's growing on me some,a nd now I may get two, but I'm still disappointed that the Clone sculpts included are all really a little understaffed in the articulation department.  Even though they didn't do much, they're still army builders so I'm a little perturbed I guess.

I do like them to an exttent though and they fill a film Clone hole that is indeed missing.  Be cool if a basic grey marking CLone came out that utilized at least the #6 sculpt if not the SA.  They have time to milk all these molds for quite a while.

Toy Reviews / Re: New JD Review: Obi-Wan Kenobi Red Leader
« on: October 5, 2005, 12:55 AM »
Holy ****, how did I forget to start a thread?  Ugh.

This week's review, as everyone already pointed out, is Obi-Wan Kenobi (With Pilot Gear).  Check out the full review because this figure was a doozey!

Overall I'd say this is probably my favorite basic prequal figure perhaps short of some of the Clones...  That's saying a lot as ROTS has been packed with pretty high-quality figures like the Collection 2 Jedi, etc.  This figure shows that you don't have to be wearing the white armor to get super articulation (even the ball/socket waist joint), and I think that's a major plus for (hopefully) some SA main characters in the future basic line.

Not to say I'm not cool with Evolutions being milked for main character greatness, but when you get a core guy like Obi-Wan done up in this kind of extravagant detail and articulation in the basic line it just makes you feel all warm and fuzzy as a collector.

I agree he's a great fig to pose with your Anakin Evolutions figure...  Or have him facing off against some 501st Troopers perhaps?  Or maybe Dooku Evolutions?

And there's much potential for future use of this sculpt.  Slap an Episode 2 headsculpt on it and I'd be a happy camper to buy that.  And I really think the "Mustafar Battle Damage" variant would be great.  Hell I'd even take an Utapau "wet-head" variant from the supposedly cut sequence of Obi-Wan wandering around in the puddle...  It'd be cool to me.

And to take it a step further I'd even re-buy this figure if they slapped generic human heads on it and cast it in different colors than Obi's robes.  I'd buy that and they seem to have little problem with EU Clones so why not EU Jedi too?

Suffice it to say, I really REALLY want Hasbro to get their mileage out of this figure.  I really WANT them to profit here.  It's something I'd buy over and over with only minor effort to make it unique.

Few flaws and tons of fun, this is one of my favorite figures in the modern line right now, definitely from all 3 prequal films, and it's easily the best Obi-Wan Kenobi figure ever if you ask me.

Thanks for the comments and thoughts you guys.  Nice to see the readers sounding off!  Make sure you let Hasbro know (if you have any chance, as in around the boards here) that this is the kinda stuff you like!

Customizing Tips and Tricks / Re: who is this guy again
« on: October 5, 2005, 12:44 AM »
The CGI model of that Clone was intended to be Bly.  Lucas changed the color (I've heard no actual reason ever for the change, it was just done) to yellow...  Bly was born.

The Red Clone made it to pegs because it was already in production and they went with what LFL supplied them at the time (the red marking images).  Deviss was a name slapped to the red Hasbro Commander (and a backstory) via Pablo Hidalgo (LFL guy) who writes for the Insider FanClub mag.

The Green dude's got no name right now though, wonder if they will?

Maybe Thire's a sign of the armor-clad troopers further morphing into total conformity as we see the armor in the classic trilogy.

Nice man...  :)

Man I forgot about this topic all together...

To Jason's reply, I agree with Nathan's stance that an EU's proximity as to timelines and the films and such doesn't make it more or less canon in my view...  But that's only to say that if I wanted to disevow Clone Wars the toons, I am pretty free to do so.  Personally I hold the cartoons higher than the comics and books because I liked the toons more, but that's just me and I'm not a huge comic/novel fan...  I pick and choose through it all.

I'm a person who always will strictly 100% hold to the idea that EVERYTHING outside the films is basically bullox.  It's a guideline of possibilities to be enjoyed if you like them and ignored if you don't like them.  Nothing more and nothing less.  In my Star Wars universe there are no giant bunnies, The Droids toons never happened whatsoever, and a chunk of the NJO is just fairytales within the Star Wars universe.   ;D

I'm a fickle EU fan, but there are some things I hold pretty high on my quality list and love as part of Star Wars.  It's all about the taste.  I'm glad Star Wars is a simpler thing for following though, where it's not something that the LFL label forces onto the fans really...  There's generally something for everyone in the EU, and they seemingly acknowledge that not all of it will appeal to everyone either and that's cool too.  I like that about them actually.

The Prequel Trilogy / Re: 41st Elite (Legion or Corps?)
« on: October 4, 2005, 04:16 AM »
Wait, I thought Vos was at Bos Pittie or some stuff?  That's what they said in the movie anyway I thought.

I really think the whole command structure of Clones is in the toilet right now...  Doing away with the color-coding for rank threw things off.  It seems to demean Gree a bit to make him a commander of a lesser group rather than the larger overall task force...  Kills the character some for me, but it's tough to rationalize what's what with E3's Clones I've found.

I agree, this is one I'm likely not going to buy more than one of I think.  I'll take the one set with a small squad, and the unique Bacarra sculpt, but that's it.  The greys did squat anyway so who cares.
