Watto's Junk Yard / Re: Jury duty. Hooray.
« on: July 28, 2011, 08:11 PM »
I was called to Jury Duty when I was 18 of 19.  While the potential jurors were assembled in the back of the courtroom a defendant in an unrelated case was brought in for arraignment.  He was the father of two children that I had babysat for when I was younger.  He was in an orange jumpsuit and handcuffed.  His wife, daughter and son were in the front row.  He was charged with molesting his daughter and beating his wife and son.  He and his wife started yelling horrible, personal things at each other while the daughter broke down a cried.  I had no idea any of this was going on in that family and always felt like we had violated her by being in the room while that was going on.  Their must have been 25-30 of us sitting there listening to this family drama - it was awful.  Only made much worse by the fact that I knew them and had been in their home and care for their children.

I was selected for a trial - a traffic accident.  On the first day - I saw the defendants - one of my best friend's parents who had moved to the west coast after graduation.  Being 18 = I waved and said - "Hi Admiral & Mrs. Hinkle - how are you?  Did Bill come with you?"  Of course - that was the end of me being on the jury........

We'll be dropping the mail-in portion of Netflix but will probably keep the streaming for the kids.  We can always find stuff that they are interested in.  Currently the 6 year old is into "realistic" Dinosaur stuff so we can find plenty of PBS/Nat Geo/Discovery Channel stuff for her.  The 9 year old has an endless supply of History Channel/Discovery Channel stuff to keep him busy through his changing fascinations and obsessions.

When I first got Netflix I rarely used it for movies.  I used it mainly for premium cable series like Dexter and True Blood.  Think is we got hooked and didn't want to wait so we are now paying for HBO/SHO.  Which is cool - because I just got to work all the way through Six Feet Under on HBO On Demand.  I forgot how much I loved that show and didn't realize how much stuff I missed out on by watching it on A&E.

Anyway - we use Redbox quite a bit - mostly for the kids.  There a not many movies that I give enough of a shite about that I don't have a problem wait until they are on Redbox for.....

Finally had a chance to watch Ep. 9 tonight.  It was the best one by far.  The final few minutes were stunning.  Glad I haven't read the books yet - I am enjoying being spoiler-free.  I kinda wish I hadn't ruined HBO's True Blood by reading all of the Sookie Stackhouse novels.

HBO did the same thing when they turned the Sookie Stackhouse series of books into True Blood.  They rushed through some of the books, added their own story lines and took some wild plot turns that weren't in the novels.  It through me for a loop when I watched it.  The producers said they went on the theory that only 10% of the viewers had read the novels - which seemed low.  I would not be surprising if they take some creative license with the plot points in this series.  I haven't read the novels so I am just enjoying watching Game of Thrones.

I'm not sure if it is a mini-series or not.  At the end they showed a clip of scenes from "This season" - which would indicate there is more than one season.  I would just assume that since the show revolves around the one murder that solving it would end the game.  Unless it opens up a can of worms, i.e. - similar murders in other towns......  It is good.  Sunday night was two episodes.  This Sunday it picks up with 1 hour episodes.

Anyone catch The Killing on AMC last Sunday?   Another awesome series from them.  It came just in time to fill the void that Shameless and Big Love have left on my Sunday nights (which is the only night of must see tv for me)  The only thing that is bothering me about The Killing right now is that I know it has a built-in end point.  Bummer >:(

I showed the pics to my husband.  Lynda Carter as Wonder Woman was his first serious woman crush.   He still has fond memories. ;)  When we were first dating, we worked together at a law firm in DC, which represented her husband in the Clifford and Altman/BCCI Banking case.  She was in the office quite a bit - which was a dream come true for him.  He doesn't post on here, but he wanted it on the record that he thinks it's the most assinine thing he 's ever seen - pants on Wonder Woman.

I want to have dinner with 10 gorgeous women, obviously.

The first thing that crossed my mind when I saw this thread was a joke post of 10 hot porn stars...preferably 10 that Charlie Sheen hadn't gotten to yet.     E...
Then you would have to invite The Loch Ness, a Unicorn and Big Foot.

That makes sense in that situation.  I am not making light of your grandmother's/family's grief by any means.  This child died as a result of a firearm accident in the home.  His mother found him.  The parents were beyond grief striken.  The mother was falling apart.  I just found it hard to imagine that she would have asked someone to take pictures of her wailing at the gravesite and in the receiving line while her father and her husband held her up.  I could understand someone taking a few snapshots at the family's request, or for a family member who was unable to attend.  It just seemed to me, at least, that this was a bit much.  She kept taking pictures of the mother - not the people who attended.  It just made me feel uncomfortable for the family - they were already on display during such a horrible time.

I don't know if this qualifies as Pet Peeve because I hope to God it was a once in a lifetime experience but here it is:  People who take pictures at a funeral  :o.  We went to the prayers and funeral for a friend's 13 year old son on Saturday.  The church was packed so we had to sit in the reception hall where the family was recieving visitors.  There was a live video feed and chairs set up.  The lady in front us of - who was sitting in the front row - kept taking snapshots of the crying family as they were hugging people in the recieving line.  Then she took pictures of the funeral on the screen.  She even took some when they brought the casket out of the church and some at the grave sight when the family was falling apart.  I think everyone was too appalled and upset about the day to say anything to her.  I can't even begin to think of a good reason to take pictures in that situation.

I actually really enjoyed the ending.

Same here.  Apparently, we're in the minority.

I did too.  I thought it was beautifully done.  Echoing what Scott said - the score only added to how achingly beautiful the final scenes were.
