Jocasta's Reading Room / Re: This week in SW Comics.....
« on: May 9, 2005, 07:58 PM »
I gotta start checking this thread out some, thanks Corman.

I had given up comics, but damned if I don't get the urge...  I bought a SW Tales at the local supermarket while doing some shopping for my parents, and it was surprisingly good (hate that they made the Scout on Endor a Clone...  F'n EU traitors!).

May need to pick stuff up though now...  I would rather get them in that graphic novel type format where they're all in one book.  Just simpler on me, to just put it on a bookshelf.  I really wanted that one Empire series with the Amanaman, but don't even know if it's all compiled in that format I like.   :-\

I tried taking an extensive # of photos at the exhibit.  It was the only thing I did Sunday before I went home, short of trying to see people to say goodbye.

The lines to this were rivaled only by the store I think...  It was probably the most popular exhibit.  I think it was worth it, but I'm nerdy like that...  Being next to film props gives me the jollies.   :-\

You can print on water-transfer decals as well with the right materials.  Water-transfers, for the uninitiated, are the dealies that came with model kits that you cut out, would soak in water, they'd transfer, and "set".

If you go ape**** with it, you can buy solutions that actually have the stuff bond to the pourous surfaces of plastics and stuff.  (It's good to be a customizer with model building experience. :P )

Erik Schroeder's had a set of "shoulder" and "helmet" emblems from the classic trilogy up at his site for years, and they work great with water-transfer if you get the right paper and stuff.  Very helpful for those of us who have shakey hands (myself included).

Happy Birthday to JK and DBK, hope you get lots of loot.  Good time of year to have a birthday I guess, what with all the new stuff on shelves.  Makes shopping easy on everyone who buy for you!

The Original Trilogy / Re: Thoughts?
« on: May 9, 2005, 06:15 PM »
It's a good enough answer to suit me for the most part, but the VD (heh) is definitely EU as well...  Though, Lucas's collaboration on any given piece of material can easily vary.  I'm not sure if this is from the horse's mouth or not, but I wouldn't be surprised if it was.

Then again, if it ain't on-screen, it ain't "canon"...  So I dunno.  My beef is that he still can force pull items to him, choke people, etc...  He has offensive and defensive capabilities with the force but no lightning?  That doesn't make a lot of sense to me I guess...  A hand can produce lightning, but a nub can't?  Or a nub with metal covering it?  I dunno, but that seems weird in and of itself.

TV-9D9 / Re: SW Live Action TV your thoughts
« on: May 9, 2005, 06:12 PM »
I'm not sure what to make of a live-action TV series for SW.

It works for Star Trek at times...  I mean, TNG and DS9 are still 2 of the best shows ever on TV if you ask me, and I'd watch every re-run if Spike would put them on later in the day when I actually could watch TV.

The problem will be duplicating that kind of success...  Not easy.

Personally, I think following the budding rebellion, perhaps even the earliest days of the "Rogue" Squadron mates.  That'd be great...  You get action, stories would be varied, plenty of main characters both alien and human...  Wouldn't be hard to duplicate known characters from the films, but you wouldn't really need to delve into "mains" like Han, Luke, Leia, etc...

I'd like to think this is the concept Lucas may run with but I fear it's not.  A different story every week, I've found, isn't something I'm wild about.  I know that the little side stories interjected in the Clone Wars shorts were distracting, and I felt that the 2nd season with its strict continuity was better.  Sure it was sorta neat watching the Mace and Kit episodes in Season one, but they were sort of dumb asides that didn't "fit" as well also, and they were the weakest episodes IMO as well.

Live action could rock...  You can't have them "exploring" like in TNG, but DS9's last season was all-out war.  Nothing but ass kickings in space.  Huge battles.  Death and destruction.  And it rocked that series to the core...  You could deal with that.  Hell I'd dig it if they interwove it with the Kyle Katarn storyline somehow...  Rogue Squad meets Kyle Katarn on his various missions for the Alliance.  That'd be too much to dream for, if you ask me.

Watto's Junk Yard / Re: Scalper
« on: May 9, 2005, 04:31 PM »
The thing that gets me are the people who do pick up things and put them on e-bay to help fund their collection and get offended when other people call them scalpers. There is no fine line. You either scalp something or you don't. I don't think less of those people who do that, I just don't think they have any point to argue.

Gee, that reminds me of someone...  Hmmm  A site I used to go to, long, long ago...

Anyway, yeah, I agree with that 100%, though I'd say I DO think less of those people since they often get beligerent when you call them out for what they are...  Their excuse has always been, "Well all I do is sell stuff on Ebay to fund my collecting habit...  See, I'm a collector!  Yay!"

I'm never any less amazed every time I hear that uttered by someone.  It's like it is ok since they're turning around and buying more stuff with their $.  If I scalped, I'd buy more stuff too with profits I made...  More SW figures, gas in my car, food...  It's still scalping though.  That point has evaded so many people though, who've tried to make that above argument.

Yeah, I tried to give credit to where Hasbro earned it, and to also point out that they took what could've easily been my favorite of the Cantina wave (based on the overall headsculpt, sans holes), and tanked it with the 3 dots.

He got worst of the wave in my eyes, and being that he was my favorite character fromt he Cantina to be made, that kinda shows how that stung to me.

He's good in every way except his gaping pock marks in his face that Hasbro did.  I think their hearts were in the right place, but their minds were drifting.  You can't take an EU thing and sacrifice the sculpt of a movie character for it.  That's just not koscher.

I think Clones are needing a multi-pack at this point...  Large box sets of multi-colored grunts, and an officers set too.  And ya know it'd sell like crazy.

Great topic Scott, love all the pictures and this hashes a lot out that I have been confused on.  Someone was trying to build a Commander Cody in customizing and I couldn't picture who the hell he was.  Now I know.

Hey guys, I wanted to introduce you to a new chap I just bought a couple items off of.

Venik is a great guy, fast communication, and very quick/well packaged items so I wanted to kick off his positive feedback here at Jedi Defender.

I hope Kevin's gonna hang with us here at the site and do lots of trading!

Take it easy!

KM is as much as $7.99 I think some places.  Outrageous.  I have found that K-Mart will, at times, pricematch.  They fight you on it toof and nail, but they will pricematch if you raise enough hell.

I swear they hate to see me show up there anymore with receipts or flyers from other stores, haha.

My parents are a bit older...  Like to take my mother on senior citizen discount day and get a little extra % off the figures too.  Don't tell mom I let that leak here though or she'll be PO'd.  :-X

My KM's actually put product out early and then sold through a lot of it.  Funny that they got a jump on everyone that way.  They are still pretty low on most figures and vehicles as well, and haven't overdone ordering it seems.  Maybe they will drop prices and be a good place to shop again sometime.

My WM's, Targets, and TRU's are the same as everyone else though...  $5.24 or $5.99 at TRU.  TRU I rarely go to since they shot themselves in the foot on 4/2 stuff, and aren't really giving me much reason to go there.

KB just flat out sucks.  Everything is outrageously priced.  No wonder that store is destined to be closed.  They earned it.

Toy Reviews / New JD.com Review: Dannik Jerriko
« on: May 9, 2005, 02:25 AM »
Arnold would've called him one ugly son of a bitch...  Let's face it, Dannik Jerrko (Cantina Encounter) is not winning any beauty contests!

However, and as boring as he may be to some, this guy was one of my all-time favorites from the Cantina.  Maybe it was because he WAS close to human looking (and humans from the Cantina are rare, unless they're main characters), or perhaps it was because of his very nonschelant look towards Obi Wan's demonstration of power with a big ole flashlight?  I don't know, but this guy always just looked neat to me.

I dig Dannik overall...  You'll find my review was pretty up on this figure, and really I liked the Cantina wave from Stem to Stern.  I think that this wave of figures is Hasbro demonstrating that they can "up the anty" in this line.  It's even been improved upon by many figures in the ROTS line now, as many feature ball/socket shoulders while the Cantina dudes do not.

Dannik Jerriko suffers from either the end result of some seriously bad acne, or a Hasbro flub in judgment...  OK, there is no "or" here, it was simply that Hasbro made a mistake when they decided to put the probe things on his face, and  use 2 gaping holes to attach the probes to.  They're EU, they're ugly, they add little to the figure...  I think Hasbro maybe had their heart in the right place though, so I tried to be lenient.  I still like the figure myself, but I'll like a lot when I can fix a head cast up so those holes are GONE.   :-\

Anyway, without further rambling, Click Right Here and read the full review.  As always, share your thoughts with us on this figure.  I think Dannik was one of the more "controversial" figures to trickle forth from the OTC line, so any opinion is welcome.  I know many were more down on him than I was, and I can't blame anyone one bit for that.
