Thanks S_H! Good to hear from you again  :) Yeah I know: a nice coat of sealant is obligatory  ;)

Anyway, I did some colouring in PSE. How's this?

I am much more pleased with this pattern. Maybe loose the yellow brown colour? I dunno. Pretty hard, getting this camo thing together.

So I put on the last layer of dry brushed Skull White and camouflaged the kama. Honestly, I think it looks like CRAP   >:(

I tried to apply a temperate snow camo pattern, following directions mentioned here, but it didn't turn out the way I wanted to.

So, I drew this nice kama at work (it's real quiet like there) and I'll practice my patterns in photoshop. Feel free to join in so I can get some ideas for free   ;D  :P

And immediately another WIP entering its final stages. This is just a practice dummy for sculpting. I like to think of this one as some sort of Juggernaut commander. Spray painted in black, painted in Codex Grey, then heavily dry brushed in Fortress Grey. I want to work up to Skull White dry brushing and then make some sort of arctic camo scheme on his kama and a yet to be made poncho  8)

Another update: the upper body is done, safe for the final weathering.

262
Paintwork on the upper body is done, only need to touch up here and there. The engine section is about done for now. Final weathering and such will be applied after reassembling the A-Wing.

Ran into a slight problem with my decal. I used clear decal paper, instead of white, but now a part of the yellow marking on top of the fins is showing through   ::)  Didn't see that one coming...

On a cool note, the silver is also showing through a bit which gives the decal a metallic look. Pretty neat   ;D  (imho, anyway).

Already looked around some modeler's sites on how to add a couple of LEDs. I think that'll look really cool.

for us non photographers ...what is a light box?

A light box (or light tent) is a device used for photography, to get a well lit shot of the object in question, with a nice even background. It's like a photo studio in smaller scale, actually. Pre made light boxes can often be quite expensive, that's why a lot of people make them theirselves. Just image google for 'lightbox'.

A light box also lets you have total control over the lighting and you can use it day and night, no matter what the natural lighting is.

264
Thanks D_A, I'll do my best. I'm even thinking about adding some lighting, as adviced by CorranHorn at FFURG. Never done that, but there's a first for everything. I hope I'll be able to finish the upper body paint scheme and add some decals tonight.

265
Thanks man, glad you like it. It's not so different from other lightboxes I've seen on the Internet, but the big advantage is that this one can be folded up neatly so it won't take up too much space.

Whoa, that's quite a large lightbox then  :) Maybe you could use triplex wood for that, because carboard won't be sturdy enough for those measurements.

You could use what we call "piano hinges" (the hinges on a piano lid) for connecting the panels and still have them foldable.

I'll go out and buy some coloured A3 sheets of cardboard to serve as background. That way I'll lose the line in the back. Also, when placing figures on an object, it's nicer to have that in the same colour as your background. I should've used a small cube painted blue, then. But I threw this setup together real quickly.

266
Well, did the Empire finish on a high?  ;D

Man, I could swear I've commented on your earlier work, like Plo Koon and those ARC Commandos. Maybe it's because there are so many boards you show your work on  ;D

Anyway, as always, it's great to see new customs by you, man.

Bastila and Jolee are superb renditions of the characters. You did a wonderful job on the vibrant colours on Bastila. If I recall correctly she had a more toned down attire in the game? No matter, I like it a lot. Jolee looks just as great with that outfit made of vinyl. So you're gonna make the whole lineup, then? Pretty ambitious and cool, I'd very much like to see your take on Mission, Zaalbar, Ordo and even Malak and Revan? Oh and Bendak Starkiller or those Mon Calamari look-a-likes?

By the way, ingenious how you handled making those yellow saber blades for Bastila  8) Only the belt looks a bit off, though  :)

Although I'm not very familiar with Iron Man, you sure know how to make beautiful creations of this character. Again, the bright colours are a nice change.

Red Hulk is da bomb!!! That guy is so wicked  :o Did you make those pants yourself? Either way, good thinking not leaving those untreated.

I have no idea who Kamakura is, but the custom looks factory fresh and of ditto quality, that's what I do know  :D

By the way, I also spotted your Adm. Thrawn on your site. Is that a recent one? That white uniform looks like it just came from the Imperial cleaner's. I can only imagine how much work went into getting it that pristine white! Have you considered making the epaulettes of some broidery thread/material?

Customizing Tips and Tricks / Photography: self made lightbox
« on: July 18, 2008, 05:26 PM »
I just made this handy lightbox. Thought I'd share and maybe it's something to add to the tutorials?

It can be folded up neatly like this:

And here's a shot of Ordo-in-a-box:

Here's what I needed to make this:

Ikea Dröna storage box (about $6);
A white blouse that needs to be replaced anyway or any other piece of thin white (cotton) fabric;
Double sided tape (the stuff you use to tape carpets and such on the ground);
Three desktop lights. I used two (from left and from above), because I don't have a third yet, but as you can see that too gives a nice effect.

Before taking this shot of Ordo, I manually set the white balance on my camera (the 2nd from the top in this pic by pointing the camera at a sheet of white paper in the box. This way the camera know what is white under these particular lighting circumstances.

Star Wars Ships and Vehicles / Re: My first custom
« on: July 15, 2008, 07:17 AM »
I agree, the bright blue looks great and it looks sharp. Funny, I'm working on an A-Wing myself (first vehicle custom). Got another one in a box somewhere, which will surely be next to customize. The A-Wing is a great start for customizing vehicles I think.

A belated thanks, Depressis  ;D Anyway, I've been working on and off on a couple of customs, but this is my current centerpiece on the work bench:

After reading a very interesting FSM article on weathering natural metal on a P-47 Thunderbolt, I immediately was inspired to do a similar treatment to a Star Wars ship. I picked the A-Wing for this project and went to work.

First, I removed a lot of the raised panel lines and scribed in new ones:

Then I base coated the thing with a couple of layers of silver spray paint:

Next, I detailed the engines and engine fins with some markings and washes. I'll add more washes after reassembling the fighter.

I'll also revamp the seat and cockpit with sheet styrene. Hopefully I succeed in making some decent on board computer panels and a center column. I'll use reference pictures from the Incredible Cross Sections book.

I then ran into serious painting trouble the last couple of days. It appears the spray paint I used does not accept my Tamiya and Citadel paints at all. Anyway, I decided to mask off the sides and sprayed a layer or two of Chaos Black on the middle section. I'll go over that with some Citadel blue shades, don't worry.

Panel lines have received a wash as well, which was fun to do. Also gave some panels a thinned down gunmetal wash.
