Watto's Junk Yard / Re: watch your driving in Cally!
« on: February 14, 2006, 07:12 PM »
Gas Boycotts, 5 grand from Bill Gates for spamming your friends, Gangsters that shoot you if you flash your highbeams on Thursday, hot girls that steal your kidneys, Secret Cookie recipies, Nigerian millionaire royalty.....and now conspiracy speeding tickets.

I'm not saying any of these things COULDN'T theoretically happen, but I've been sent each one of these emails several times, always by someone I know....and never given any of them a second thought.  Most times I just hit the internet, find a site like snopes and send the link back to them.

I've NEVER forwarded one on.    Not once.

I swear....if someone walked up to you on the street and said some of this **** to you, you'd laugh at them, but for some reason, seeing the printed words still seems to dupe some people.

I have to go now. I'm going to make a six figure income in my spare time while  refinancing my house.  Then I'll think about meeting some hot local singles.

I know that JD has better people working for it than pretty much any other site, so there's no reason why their coverage should be lacking in comparison.

I'll go out on a limb here and give you two potential reasons.

$$

It sounds like what you're suggesting is that because the people here are cool, they should also have unlimited funds?

Fansite  ==  No big pay roll.  No Google Ads.  No thousands of members racking up tens of thousands of "clicks" on ads, meaning no big residuals that can pay for things like plane tickets and hotel rooms.

Sure, maybe other "bushleague" sites had some coverage, but that's just because someone that is on the staff was probably already going anyway.  It sounds like Jesse was going and then couldn't.  I don't see how that should reflect poorly on him OR JD.

Why not lighten up on the whole situation a bit?   I'm sure JD will have multiple dudes at Comic Con (I hope to run into them down there again) and they'll make up for whatever was missed at this show.  ;D

I wouldn't mind some sort of password style entry system that you could change on a whim, but generic frequency style access would worry me a bit. Thieves would get all high tech, real fast. With the right tools, they could break into your house without ever touching the door.  I can just see little black boxes that scan frequencies showing up on Ebay for 200 bucks or whatever.

As someone who's had a break-in, I think there's still something to be said for a nice deadbolt.

A few things:

1.   JD didn't have toy fair coverage.  BFD.  Go over to Rebelscum if you want to see the news.  You can still come back here and chat about it.

2.  To the handful of people bitching about a lack of coverage at this industry con....how about you make a paypal donation to JD so they can afford to send someone to Comic Con and cover it the way you want it covered this summer? If it's this important to you that you see 10 or 11 more pictures or reviews of that new GG mini-bust (and NO pictures of that Little Mermaid statue), then hey....I'll bet that paypal fund would collect 3 or 4 whole dollars towards the cost that the people from JD who are going will pay out of their own pockets come July.

3.  Jesse, if you're really quitting over THIS, that's silly.  It's not your fault JD didn't have coverage.  If one of the many people Rebelscum had at Toy Fair was sick, I'm sure Phil would have flown someone else out.  I doubt Chris has the bankroll to do that on a whim....but if he does, hey Chris, I hearby volunteer to be flown to any convention you want coverage for.  I'll work for expenses + the cost of exclusives I'll "have" to buy to photograph.   There, problem solved.  ;D

Ok, seriously though, JD is a fan-run site.  RS is a business. There's a BIG difference and in cases like this, a business always has the advantage on the little guy.  RS is all about ads, clicks and dollar signs.  That's how they pay for their Toy Fair coverage and get the invites to go to places like Sansweet's house.   That's their thing.   They're not just Rebelscum, they're "Offical Pix" (tm)

JD seems like it's about catering to their membership.  They do it well.  That's THEIR thing.  When I come here, I can chat with people whose names I remember, and who aren't going to ask me who I am.  We're free to joke and talk, and not have to worry we'll get banned if we accidentally say something around the wrong moderator.  It's a pretty good community.

Given the choice between cool people here, or yet another article covering a convention 4 or 5 sites have already covered.....I'll take the former.

I go to Rebelscum for my Star Wars news.
I come here to hang with the cooler members of the Star Wars collecting community.

These days I go about once a month.  I decided at 30 to get braces, and I'm not going to be done with them for another several months.

Well, we paid $250,000 (if I remember correctly) for our 6,000ft-ish house

Good LORD!

In Seattle, you can't even buy a 1200 sq ft 2 bedroom condo for that.   I am so jealous.

Other Toy Lines / Re: Palisades...Dead

They were talking about this on the forums (and over at RS) for a few weeks now and I kept hoping it wasn't true.  Aside from making great toys (including the Sesame Street line I was looking forward to)...they've had some nice people working there.  Whether it was customer service or people at a con, I always thought they were really cool people.

Saga Collection '06 / Re: 80 figures for 2006?
« on: February 2, 2006, 05:51 PM »
With the movies being re-released (in 3D even?) plus the potential for a TV show, I'd say we won't see the last of Star Wars anytime soon.

The last "big" year for retail?  Something tells me that might have been last year.  This year, it's all about repacks and repaints.  There are a few new sculpts, but most of these figures are either straight repacks, repaints...or kit-bashes.  I'm not saying I don't like the new Gonk (with his new hat) or the figure stands with the names of the characters on them (in case I"d forgotten)....but I'm able to leave most of the SAGA line on the shelves for other collectors so far this year.  I'm only buying the new figs, and so far...they're few and far between.

So does anyone have any recommendations on where to get these things?  I'm still waitlisted on Luke, but I want one. I'm looking for a site that you've shopped with before and can vouch for.

You know, the Qui Gon bust is so nice, that even the OT purists might want to pick it up.  Just for the glory of it.

I can't wait to see better pictures though, there's something "off" about those clones that I just can't put my finger on.  It's probably the white background, but they just don't look right to me.

Watto's Junk Yard / Re: Bald or grey?

I've noticed one or two grey hairs lately.  I blame my recent wedding.  ;D

I know that if I start losing my hair, I'm going to shave it close.  Those guys that try to hide being bald with hats or combovers are just silly. I'd rather just embrace it and go 100% cueball.

What, am I not allowed to be one of the few people on this board with some taste?

You're not the only one.

Everyone I know, work with or see on the street is convinced that the underrated Seahawks will beat the overrated Steelers this Sunday.

I'm a Seattle transplant, so I don't particularly "love" the Seahawks, but I will definitely be cheering them on this Sunday.

I think my most valueable item in both price and sentiment is probably my Stormtrooper armor.  Thanks to the armor (and the 501st) I've managed to meet all sorts of Star Wars and other celebrities, I've traveled to tons of conventions....been on TV, on stage, etc, etc.

It's also the only Star Wars item I've ever owned that has actually improved my social life.  ;D

Oddly enough, I think the plain white one is my favorite.
Perhaps it's the pose.

It's times like this that it's easy to see why so many people respected you back during your "Durge" phase...

Carefull, he might think you're implying that people respect him now, which is far from the case.
 ;D

Anyway....this version looks pretty much identical to what they showed at the con.  I really liked the theory that it was multiple pieces, and it seems like kind of a letdown that it's just a ship we've already seen before.
