The Vintage Collection / Re: K-Mart Exclusive Vintage ROTJ AT-ST

This and the Ewoks pack were two of the brightest things out of SDCC.  I still have a KMart within driving distance but I hope these make it out before that changes...

Droid Factory 2013 / Re: 2013 Droid Factory Wave 1
« on: July 14, 2012, 12:09 AM »
I'm not gonna lie, I'm extremely disappointed in waves 1 and 2.  Yes, there are some nice upgrades in there but let’s face it, there’s nothing there we don’t already own in one form or another.  And who the hell on the Hasbro team has the juice to keep the goddamned Sandtrooper in rotation?  They released one in 2010 that hung around most of last year, we’re getting another in the next couple of weeks and then the 1st wave of 2013?  Someone needs to have their ass kicked.

We just had the 212th Clone Trooper in January 2011 and now he’s back?  Another Vader?  TIE and A-Wing pilots with not ships to support them (that we know of)...plus there’s another TRU pilot pack coming.  Hasbro needs to lay off the pilots for a while.

Pile on top of that there’s no CVI exclusive and the whole presentation today, with only a few exceptions, was a stinking pile of ****.  Even I’m not making excuses for Hasbro this time.  Yes, there are a few figs in there that will sell because they are needed upgrades, but contrary to popular belief, there are still some characters that haven’t been done that would make better choices than these.

People that post "wow, just wow" and "easy pass" in forum threads.  Easy Pass is a turnpike payment option and "wow, just wow" doesn't sound right even in my head let alone outloud...reading just sounds goofy.

Middle Earth / Re: The Hobbit - Toy Line

I think the Bilbo, at least, is a 6" figure because if you compare it to the 6" clear SDCC exclusive, it looks pretty identical.

Indiana Jones - lots of potential here
Robotech - So many characters, and great vehicles.  Matchbox didn't do it justice
Predator - The movie.  Just the Predator alone isn't enough, how about the Special Forces team with Dutch and Blaine?
Starship Troopers - Mobile Infantry against bugs anyone?

Holy crap!  I posted this 9 years ago?

We got a bunch of Indiana Jones, so that's cool.

McFarlane has done some cool Predator stuff.

Toynami has done some cool Robotech stuff, including their masterpiece edition Veritechs.

As for Starship Troopers?  Eh.  Poor choice on my part in retrospect.

As for now?

GAME OF THRONES - Definitely lots of potential here for core characters and some army building.  I'd love to get some Stark forces, Lannister soldiers, Dothraki, Nights Watch and Wights.  But seeing how the show is so far removed from being oriented towards kids, this line would probably have to remain a dream.

HIGHLANDER - The first movie could probably yield about a dozen or so figures.  It would probably be best served by a company like McFarlane or NECA.

That's actually a pretty good list.  I'd have loved to see some 3.75" Starship Troopers figures. The line we did get from Galoop mostly sucked on the figure side, but the vehicles and Action Flett/MicroMachine stuff was excellent.  I actually have pretty much the whole line except for 1 figure I think.

That's another movie I've seen rumors for...only this time the plan is to do a more faithful interpretation of the book, including the power suits and things like that.

Highlander is an interesting choice.  I bet we see a remake of that flick a few years down the road.

We are seeing a remake, didn't you hear the news, they cast Ryan Reynolds in it.

And they did make a figure line for an animated version of Highlander back in the day, sometime in the mid '90s.

I'm surprised Hot Toys hasn't picked up a 1:6 license for the series, though.  There have been some 1:6 figures but they weren't that great.

BUY IT!

But seriously, buy it.  It's one of the better looking figs they've put out for the Joe line and that's saying something.  I haven't bought any other Joes and I was seriously thinking about this one.

That's a great score on the Fang Boat.  My Target stocked another round of the 3-packs and the Bravo Vehicles.  No more Delta wave or single carded figures though.

Walmart only had 1 case of wave 1 and never stocked the Bravo or Delta vehicles although they did have shelf tags for them.

Watto's Junk Yard / Re: The Spider-Man Movie Series
« on: July 3, 2012, 04:16 PM »
I actually liked Tobey as Parker/SM because he was an unexpected choice and I thought he rose to the occasion and that impressed me.  But, having now seen Garfield in the role, I liked him better.

I'm only a passing fan of Spider-Man, never read much of him in comics, but knew the origins story obviously, and had some idea of his rogues gallery.  But my main exposure to him was in the various cartoons over the years and he's always been a wiseass as Spidey and I thought Garfield captured that better.  Plus his fights as Spider-Man seemed more like "Spider-Man" than Tobey's did.  Even though I didn't mind the change in webbing for the first trilogy, I have to say that I was really excited to see the web shooters make a comeback.

It was also nice that even though they retread the origins story, they didn't go with Green Goblin as the first villain and that was a great choice.  It's one of the reasons that I liked Batman Begins so much, they picked an unexpected villlain rather than going with the Joker straight out of the gate.  Now, if only we could get an X-Men movie where Magneto didn't end up being the main bad guy...

Emma Stone in knee highs. Emma Stone doing homework in knee highs.  Emma Stone doing science in knee highs.  Emma Stone reading the phone book...in knee highs.  End of story.   >:D

The Amazing Spider-Man kinda was....amazing. Had issues but overall I may have liked it better than the first SM.  I definitely liked the Spidey part of it...thought Garfield made a better Parker/Spidey than Tobey did and it was just fun.  I don't even want to think about it too hard right now.

No, but at this point I think that Hasbro has to try anything they can to get people, especiaklly kids, outside the collector community involed in the brand.  If their version of Squinkies is the way to do it, good for them.

I'd like to know if Hasbro mentioned anything about the 12" line coming back?  The $20 line seemed to sell really well here and I'd love to know if Hasbro considered it a good enough of a seller that they'll see about bringing it back inbetween movies (if there's a 3rd).  They don't have to have movie liknesses to do the firefighter and cop type figures.  And, of course, I'd love to see some smallish AT themed sets.

Over on RS there has been a big debate on ownership and right of use for information and photos posted to their forum.  You can read the full thread for more info, but the basics are that a member returned from a suspension and wanted to remove all of his photos and some of the info he'd posted.  After deleting it he received a permanent ban and his info and pics were restored.  The TOS was amended and during the debate over some of the language, specifically the use of the word "publish" (being taken to mean RS could use forum info/pics in a printed work), PW dropped this:

Quote
I recently had to insist that the site be credited for information used from it in a printed book that's coming out, so I have a strong feeling about who receives credit in this case.

Since RS is a collecting site and the only collecting book I know of that's coming out is Sansweet's (well, Kellerman and one other guy are working on books but they're more vintage oriented and not scheduled yet), and I know that Curto and some others are getting contributor acknowledgements, and Curto's "firing" came about the same time as it was revealed he had input on the Sansweet book, I put two and two together to draw a conclusion.

So, maybe not photos, but I'm just thinking that PW feels that the input that went into the book belongs to him since it was someone from his site that contributed.  I don't know, speculation.  Until Curto talks, or one of his friends that knows the full story leaks it, that's what I came up with.

Edited because, apparently, I can't spell or use proper grammar after 1AM.

I don't know if all the zombie figures were really on the table but the Renegades stuff and the 30th figs like Flint, Jaye, Kwinn, Eels, Tele-Viper...those were all legit options that didn't get done for one reason or another.

The Coyote vehilce from the Renegades cartoon is really excellent, as is the Steel Wolf.  There's a big list of missed opportunities in there.  I have no idea how far some of them got into production, I think Kwinn is done because some samples have turned up and the Club Footloose uses his arms, but the rest make use of enough existing parts that it shouldn't take much to get them into production.

I guess if the movie really works next March and they're looking at a 3rd film, we'll probably see Retaliation likenesses going forward and some of these will probably never get made.  But if it falls off like RoC?  Maybe Hasbro will abandon the movie heads and we'll get some of these.  Who knows.  I'm not holding my breath on any of them.

My best guess, based on a comment from PW during the new TOS arguments, is that maybe he took some of his photos to Sansweet for this new book, without permission.  Since Curto was, at one point, actually employed by RS (but not at the time he was "fired") I'm assuming PW felt they belonged to RS and without permission, couldn't be used.  I'd also guess he even feels that the stuff contributed when he was a volunteer (and mod) falls into the work for hire category as well.

Don't know if something else came down for the forum ban, but it's the kind of petty stuff PW would do.  Maybe it's because of the Curto/Burns podcast being somewhat of a compeltition to the ForceCast?  But, it's just a real kick in the teeth when he's talking about the "history of the forum" and why people can't remove content they've posted while simultaneously running as fast as he can to scrub any mention of support for Curto and Joe Yglesias.

That may be the best answer to a collecting question of this type, maybe ever.  Congrats, you win the Internet for today.
