Watto's Junk Yard / Re: Major DVD Release List for Fall '03
« on: October 12, 2003, 11:45 AM »
Now, for that Best Buy news. . .

I know that a lot of folks here buy their DVDs at Best Buy and I know that a lot of you eat at McDonald's, so here's something I ran across this evening, which might prove helpful for all of the DVDs due in the next month:

Apparently, from October 14th to November 10th, if you buy Large or Super Size French Fries, you'll get at least one "Best Buy Buck" that you can use toward whatever at Best Buy.  Some of the Best Buy Bucks will also be for $5 or $10, and you could also win Best Buy gift cards from $50 to $5000.

Here's a link to a thread at DVD Talk for more:

HOT! Eat McDonald's Fries - Get Best Buy Bucks for DVDs! 10/14-11/10

Now, personally, I can't stand McDonald's "hamburgers" (haven't had one in two and a half years), but their fries are always good, and this is a fairly decent deal if you buy your DVDs from Best Buy in between meals from McDonald's.

Starts Tuesday. . .

I'll be at Best Buy right after work on Tuesday.  Got a gift certificate to use and everything for my Matrix Reloaded DVD.  I'm wondering what the bonus features are going to be like.

Yeah, the couple reviews I've glanced through, haven't been just overwhelmingly positive about TMR's extra features, but generally positive overall because the presentation of the film is so good.  Here's a couple of links:

The Digital Bits' The Matrix Reloaded DVD Review

Film Rating: B-
Video Rating: A
Audio Rating: A
Extras Rating: C-

DVD File's The Matrix Reloaded DVD Review

Video: 5/5
Audio: 5/5
Extras: 3/5
ROM Content: 3/5
Value: 4/5

So, the film presentation itself sounds like it's going to be quite good, especially if you've got a home theatre set up of some kind.

And, right now, it looks like Best Buy will be the best place to pick up TMR this week:  $14.99, and there's a Best Buy-exclusive bonus disc included with over thirty minutes of additional content.  Exactly what that is, I don't know, but more is always better.  (And more news on Best Buy in my next post. . .)

Target's got it listed for $15.99.  Don't know yet on Circuit City, since they don't really run weekly ads anymore here in OKC.

EDIT:  Looks like Circuit will have it for $14.99, matching Best Buy, but I'd still pick it up at The Buy, just for the bonus disc.  But that's just me.  :)

And also, TMR's available in both wide and fool-screen, so make sure you get the right one.  This is one flick that would look especially crappy in pan-and-scan.

B&M wise, I think Circuit City is the best at $14.99 (it might be $15.99, but still the cheapest).  That's where I'm heading after work.  Its probably going to be hit or miss, because the Circuit City near me sucks when it comes to DVD releases.

Well, either way, it looks like Circuit is the place to beat on Scarface.

(Although, to be fair, a guy at the HTF is reporting that his Wal-Mart will have it for $15.18.  A lot of times, Wal-Mart will quietly beat the lowest prices from other chains, but they don't do a regular weekly ad, so nobody knows.  Plus, Wal-Mart prices can be all over the board depending on which stores you go to, so your mileage may vary.  You'll just have to check your local stores to make sure--which might be easier.  At least around here, Wal-Marts outnumber Circuit City stores by a huge margin.)

Matty... Anyone... Anyone...

I'm going to heads out later to pick up Tony Montana and need to know where I canf ind hin the cheapest... at the brick n' mortar level that is...

Could ya be so kind to give me some ideas...

 :-*

Believe Circuit City's the cheapest for Scarface at $15.99, while Best Buy's got it for $16.99.

It's also available in both wide- and wrong-screen, so get the right one.  :)

Alrighty, I'm convinced. Is there a MSRP on the Alien set yet? It'll be a Christmas wishlist piece.

No MSRP until Fox announces it officially, but I would guess that the MSRP will be somewhere around $99-$119, which would put the "real world" price somewhere between $80 and $100.  Hopefully, $80, obviously.  I don't see it going above $100 at all.

Another similar Fox release, the Die Hard Ultimate Collection, was a six-disc set, which I think was selling for between $50-60 when it was first released in 2001.  So, add another movie, and three more discs, and I think an $80 street price might be a possibility.

Well, here's the list of stuff that's believed to be in the Quadrilogy so far--by no means is it complete, and, again, we'll have to wait for Fox to announce it before we have a complete list.  They should be doing that shortly.

This was compiled by a poster at the Home Theater Forum named Jeff Krispow.  You can follow the entire 37-page thread here, if you so desire.

--Note--I'm quoting the rest from his reply on page 21 of that thread, but I'm not putting it in as a quote as I believe it is harder to read.

"The following is a partial list of the "officially" announced specs for Fox's upcoming The Alien Quadrilogy DVD set. The list of extras have been mostly provided from information released by the British Board of Film Classification (http://www.bbfc.co.uk).

NOTE: The BBFC-listed extras were provided to them by Fox for classification-purposes only, with the intent of including them on the British edition of the Alien Quadrilogy set. Although the feature set between the US and UK sets are likely identical, there is no guarantee that all the specs and extras will be identical between both discs, or that they will even be on the discs at all. Since this set is still in production, the items on this list are not final, and there will undoubtedly be some additions and deletions. So, until Fox "officially" announces the final spec list, please take this list as a "work in progress" only.

New Info: The Digital Bits website has been closely documenting the production of The Alien Quadrilogy for their upcoming book. Bill Hunt has confirmed that some of these BBFC-announced extras have already been omitted from the final set. (Unfortunately, I do not personally know which ones have been dropped.) So remember this as the list is updated with future BBFC specs…

Watto's Junk Yard / Re: Major DVD Release List for Fall '03
« on: September 29, 2003, 09:32 PM »
1) The last 2 movies were horrible, no matter how many extras you can include for it.

Which, of course is subjective.  Ultimately, the films are the most important, and if you hate the films, you hate the films.  The new cuts will be worth seeing, though, and could possibly go a long way in improving the way those films are looked upon.

Quote
2) They have all been released independently.

3) They have all been released in a Japanese Commemorative Set

4) They have all been released in a US "Legacy" set.

Which, of course is basically saying the same thing three times in three different ways.  Let me go ahead and knock these down for you:

*The new Ridley Scott-approved cut of Alien is not on DVD.

*The 1986 theatrical cut of Aliens is not on DVD.

*The new cut of Alien 3 is not on DVD.

*The new cut of Alien Resurrection is not on DVD.

*The contents of the bonus discs for each individual film are newly-created, and are not on DVD.

*The new DTS soundtracks for the first, second, and fourth films are not on DVD.

(For the record, the current individual discs of the films are the same exact versions that were released in the Alien Saga--not "Legacy"--box.  All five products--each of the four discs, and the box set, were released at the same time, in June of 1999.  Now, for a little while after it's release, the Saga set did have a mail-in offer included, for a copy of the bonus Alien Legacy documentary disc.  IIRC, the Legacy bonus disc is/was around an hour long, and right now, it's up in the air if it's going to be included in the new set or not.)

This is basically the same thing as trying to argue that the Lord of the Rings Extended Editions aren't worth it because they were previously released as bare-bone (relatively speaking) theatrical versions.  Of course, the differences between the Theatrical and Extended cuts of the Rings films are tremendous, in terms of both the film presentation and the amount of extras included.  Same thing here--the old Alien disc was fantastic, Aliens was pretty good, and the discs last two films were fairly unremarkable, even for their time.

Quote
5) There is apparently an Alien 5 in the works. . .

According to whom?  Gregg?  By way of an Australian tabloid show which is the equivalent of Entertainment Tonight here in the states?  I think some folks are confusing next year's Alien/Predator movie, perhaps.

Quote
. . .which means there will never be a "defintive" Aliens set.

This would kind of be like refusing to buy the new Indiana Jones set on the possibility that a new film might be coming in a few years.  A future film doesn't detract from whether or not an existing product is any good.

But, it is by no means a "defintive" set, if by "defintive", you mean, it includes everything that's ever been committed to celluloid in the name of the franchise.  Right now, the Quadrilogy will apparently not be including Jerry Goldsmith's isolated score, which was on the first Alien DVD.  It won't be including the new Alien Saga documentary, which will be released by a different company on October 14th.  And, like I mentioned above, 1999's Alien Legacy documentary may-or-may-not be included on the ninth disc of the new set.  We'll have to wait for the official announcement from Fox to be sure.

Quote
Too many down sides to consider when purchasing such a hefty set for a franchise that is getting progressively worse, just for a couple of extra discs.

That's five extra discs, three brand-new cuts, and the theatrical cut of Aliens.  Maybe if you make enough money from selling all your Jango Junk, you'll be able to afford it.   :P

Quote
Especially whatever Fincher does to Alien 3. No matter what, the crew can't not use weapons in the original release, then magically be shown toting, so ultimately it can't measure up to 1,2, or 4.

I'll agree that the third film is weak, but the new cut might improve it, and I still think that the strength of the first two films, and the incredible amount of extras included make this a must-purchase set for the true DVD fan.

(I will mention here that I mis-spoke in my last post, where I said that the Quadrilogy had forty hours' worth of extras.  It actually has around forty hours total--around seventeen hours for the films, and around twenty-three hours for the supplementals.  Still, that's nearly a whole day's worth of bonus features to watch.  Should be amazing.)

Anyway, I'll stand by choice.  It won't sell nearly the amount of discs as Finding Nemo or Pirates, but I do think that this will be the single best DVD product released this fall.  I'll put up a laundry list of confirmed features for it in my next post.

Well, I originally wanted to do a "Top Five Biggest DVDs for the Rest of the Year" thing, and the first four were pretty easy, but I couldn't quite decide on number five.  So, instead, here's a few notable releases--maybe kind of like an honorable mentions type thing.  So, here goes:

A Christmas Story: 20th Anniversary Two-Disc Special Edition - Release Date: October 7th

The Lion King: Special Edition: Platinum Edition - Release Date: October 7th

Matrix Reloaded - Release Date: October 14th

Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines - Release Date: November 18th

X2: X-Men United - Release Date: November 25th

Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl: 2-Disc Collector's Edition - Release Date: December 2nd

-------------------------------------------------------------------

4.  Finding Nemo: 2-Disc Collector's Edition

Well, this has pretty much been the King of the 2003 Box-Office so far, and, more importantly, a great flick (one that I think I still have yet to read a negative review of).  Plus, the DVDs that Pixar and Disney have done for each of their other movies have been absolutely phenomenal, and when you combine that with this terrific movie, you have a no-brainer purchase.  Expect a ton of fun extra features, from folks that are terribly enthusiastic fans of the format, and a fantastic digital-to-digital transfer.

Release Date: November 4th

----------------------------------------------------------------------

3.  The Adventures of Indiana Jones: The Complete DVD Movie Collection

Well, ultimately, I'd have liked this to have been higher than third-place, but compared to the sheer amount of material we're getting with the top two choices, this just doesn't quite match up, with only around four-or-so hours of bonus features.

However, ultimately, the movie should be the most important factor in deciding whether or not to purchase the discs, and I think most of us here would agree that the Indy films are some of the finest action/adventure films ever made.  That, coupled with the fact that we've waited six years for Steve and George to put them on DVD, means that they could have no extras at all, and they'd still be a noteworthy release.

Expect some really nice transfers with this set, which Paramount has always excelled at, and which have all been digitally cleaned-up and remastered by THX, I believe.

Release Date: October 21st

----------------------------------------------------------------------

2. The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers: Special Extended DVD Edition

Not much to say here.  If you've got last year's phenomenal Extended Fellowship set (which everyone should), then expect more of the same this time around.  Also available in a Collector's Gift Set with a Gollum statue.  No word yet on if this one will include a free ticket to Return of the King, like last year, but I'd imagine it would.  Even if it doesn't, though--still a must-buy.

Release date:  November 18th

--------------------------------------------------------------------

And, in my opinion, the biggest DVD release for the rest of 2003:

1.  Alien Quadrilogy

This is nine discs' worth of Alien-y goodness, my friends.  Each movie gets two discs--one for the movie, one for the extras, and then there's yet another disc for more stuff.  Supposedly, we'll be getting both the extended cuts and the theatrical cuts for the first three flicks (and maybe Resurrection, as well).

All told, the extras on this bad boy are supposed to be right around forty hours or so, and that's not counting the length of the movies themselves.  This set is primed to be so good, that it should make up for the rather luke-warm reception that the third and fourth flicks have received--and supposedly, the "new" cut of Alien 3 is restoring it to be the flick that David Fincher intended it to be.

Fox hasn't announced a date for this thing (it was previously thought to be November 11th, and now it's rumored to be released on December 16th, but we'll have to wait on their official announcement to be sure).

---------------------------------------------------------------------

(Dare I say it?)

Thoughts?   :P

Saga '02-'04 / Re: Star Tours wave 3 FINALLY at Disneyland!
« on: September 29, 2003, 03:48 PM »
D'oh!  Totally brainfarted on that Matt...  Sorry!   :-[  Just went down there yesterday for the first time in almost two months, and my senile ol' brain forgot to drop you a line first about it.  All 9 droids are still there in abundance, so give me a shout if you want me to snag any of 'em for you on my next trip down.  They're still $10.77 each with tax...

Or... if you do want some, you could just have my "openers" which I've yet to open, and I can just snag me some more on my next visit there.  LMK!   :-*

Hey, no big deal, man.  And, actually, my sister and her family are headed to Disney World next month and she told me they'd look for them for me.  On top of that, I can't afford them right now, anyway.  But--it's cool, and I'll definitely let you know if they don't come through for me next month for whatever reason.

But also, I caught a blurb at Rebelscum's main page today about some site having the Star Tours figures for $5.99 each.  Lemme see:

Quote
News from PlanetActionFigure.com
Ben: PlanetActionFigure.com writes: "We have in stock . . . the Star Tours figures priced at $5.99 each.

Sure enough. . .

Star Tours figures at Planet Action Figure

At the link, they have "Card Not Mint" versions of DL-X2, R4-M9, and WEG-1618 for $5.99 each.

Looks like that's all the Star Tours figs they've got right now--but that's not bad if  you're looking for some cheap openers.

Thanks again, Matt.

Keep the info flowing V, and it was nice catching you in "that other forum section" yesterday for once!   :-*   :P

Yeah, well, you can catch my pathetic excuse in my reply to that thread. . .

Also, some HUGE RELEASE NEWS today:

Woo-hoo!  December 9th, boys and girls!  Get'cha some.

But seriously--added a bunch of stuff today (for December and next year), and link-ified a few more to Deep Discount.

Having problems with my computer today, so I'm going to keep this short, but I'll be back later with my top five big releases for the remainder of the year.

Virex... You actually collect Star Wars figures?  I didn't know that!  Thought I was in the wrong section for a minute when I saw your name there...   :P

Yeah, well, it's not something I'm proud of.   8)  (And, if you'll remember, I did post here a few weeks ago, asking you about the Star Tours figures. . .)

I've been collecting for years, and I've got a whole roomful of junk, but I've cut down on my collecting drastically this year (haven't bought anything since January).  I still like to hang out on the collecting boards, though, since I like the community, and it also allows me to keep tabs on what's out, what's coming out, and what's going on with the new movie.

Normally, I don't have much to add, because most of the time, someone else has already said what I would have said.  However, I'm a big Artoo fan, and this time, I was excited about seeing this new figure--which looks like it could very well be the best Artoo to date--unless, of course, the integrity of the dome and legs is compromised.   :D

(This one, in terms of scale and detail, kicks the crap out of the 1999 Holo Leia Artoo, which a lot of people think is the best Artoo out there.  In terms of articulation, it is, but it's vastly undersized, and the dome is awful.)

Anyway, I've already revealed more than I planned, so back to Secret Lurking Mode!   :-X

I'm not sure if this is the same article I vaguely remember reading, but it answers your question anyway.

He likes sarsaparilla, too, which may taste like root beer but isn't. America used to drink sarsaparilla, says the king -- now it can't even spell it.

Right on.  Thanks for the link--it even prompted me to do a Google search for (of course), "difference between sarsaparilla and root beer".

So this is from the first thing it pulled up:

Quote
During the taste test, our reviewers had difficulty guessing which of the samples were root beers and which were sarsaparillas. The Overall Taste scores, however, show lower scores for the sarsaparilla samples. In general, sarsaparilla seems to be less full-bodied, less creamy and less rich than root beer. The small sample cups used in our experiment seem to favor the brands with the most intense, full-bodied flavor, which can be ascertained in just a few sips. In this situation, sarsaparilla will be at a disadvantage. And in one notable instance, the red food coloring used in some sarsaparillas brought an uneasy reminder of sweetened cough syrup, creating a lower score for the sample.

Great American Root Beer Showdown

(Side note:  So apparently, my dream of referring to root beer as "sarsaparilla" in order to make myself sound cool and different will remain just that: a dream.)   :-[

And, these are the top five root beers tested according to the guys at the above link:

Bulldog Root Beer
Ed McCaffrey's Creamy Root Beer
Rat Bastard Root Beer
Tubz Root Beer
X Root Beer Riot

Haven't heard of any of them.   :)

Posted--if only to show Scott up, primarily for the erroneous information he "reported" in the last thread:

Pearl Jam DVD Spotlights New York Show

Pearl Jam is eschewing a comprehensive DVD of its 2003 Riot Act tour in favor of spotlighting one particularly noteworthy show from the trek. The double-disc "Live at the Garden," capturing the band's July 8 performance at New York's Madison Square Garden, will arrive Nov. 11 via Epic. On the same day, the label will issue a long-in-the-works set of rarities, although no information on that collection has yet been confirmed.

The sold-out July 8 show came at the tail end of the three-month tour and found Pearl Jam unleashing a 30-song, nearly three-hour set. Highlights included a guest appearance by Ben Harper on "Daughter" and "Indifference," the band's only third-ever performance of the pre-Pearl Jam act Mother Love Bone's "Crown of Thorns" and a furious run through the Who's "Baba O'Riley" with all of the arena lights turned on.

The concert went on for so long that Pearl Jam faced a several thousand dollar fine for breaking an 11 p.m. curfew. Frontman Eddie Vedder told the crowd that the stage floor was literally shaking from the audience volume, a feat venue officials said had only ever happened at performances by Bruce Springsteen, the Grateful Dead and Iron Maiden. The venue later waived the curfew violation fine.

Bonus features on the DVD include a 5.1 audio mix and a video for the controversial "Riot Act" track "Bu$hleaguer." "Live at the Garden" was shot by Liz Burns, Steve Gordon and Kevin Shuss, the same team that collaborated on the 2000 tour DVD "Touring Band 2000."

As previously reported, Pearl Jam will return to the concert stage Oct. 25 at Neil Young's annual Bridge School Benefit outside of San Francisco.

Here is the "Live at the Garden" track list:

"Love Boat Captain"
"Last Exit"
"Save You"
"Green Disease"
"In My Tree"
"Cropduster"
"Even Flow"
"Gimme Some Truth"
"I Am Mine"
"Low Light"
"Faithfull"
"Wishlist"
"Lukin"
"Grievance"
"1/2 Full"
"Black"
"Spin The Black Circle"
"Rearviewmirror"
"You Are"
"Thumbing My Way"
"Daughter" (with Ben Harper)
"Crown of Thorns"
"Breath"
"Better Man"
"Do the Evolution"
"Crazy Mary"
"Indifference" (with Ben Harper)
"Sonic Reducer" (with the Buzzcocks' Tony Barber)
"Baba O'Riley"
"Yellow Ledbetter"

So. . .

What's the difference between root beer and sarsaparilla?

(I had to look up "sarsaparilla" in the dictionary, for the spelling, and it was defined as "a tropical American plant; a soft drink made from its root.")

So then, of course, I had to look up what it said for "root beer", which was the following:

"A carbonated beverage flavored with syrup made from the extracted juices of roots, barks, and herbs."

Maybe sarsaparilla is just taken from the root of the sarsaparilla plant, while root beer is a mix of a whole bunch of stuff.

Or, then again, maybe it's a regional thing--different names for the same thing.  I know I don't see sarsaparilla here in Oklahoma, but I saw it a bunch during a road trip of the western U.S. a couple years ago.  Got some, of course, and it tasted pretty much the same as regular old root beer (to me, anyway).

Anyone got the low-down?  All I know is, if they're the same exact thing, I'm going to start saying "sarsaparilla" instead of root beer, because, I'm dumb, and I just think it sounds cooler.   8)

This R2 also looks amazing!

Indeed it does.

I've been wanting a really clean, well-articulated Artoo for a long, long time--something like the R2-Q5, only with an Artoo paint job--and this looks like it could be it.

We'll have to wait and see what it looks like without the serving tray (i.e. if there's a hole in the dome).  If there's not, and this is just a normal Artoo with the serving tray attached on, this is easily going to be the best Artoo they've ever done.

The Luke looks fantastic too, of course--I just wish they would have also shown it without the cloak on, like the pic from Wizard World.

Cool stuff.

Clone Wars '03-'05 / Re: ANIMATED cartoon CW figures coming?
« on: September 26, 2003, 11:21 AM »
Well, Hasbro's big announcement of Classic Trilogy stuff for next year has kind of over-shadowed this other news:

Quote
New 3 ¾” Animated Figures!

As announced earlier this year, the Clone Wars are coming to life this Fall on Cartoon Network via an animated micro-series. And Hasbro will be offering an exclusive line of animated style figures focusing on the core characters from the Clone Wars animation! These figures will be a Target exclusive and will be available at the beginning of 2004. Wave 1 will include 3 key heroes and 1 new villain from the Clone Wars including:
· Anakin Skywalker
· Obi-Wan Kenobi
· Mace Windu
· Asajj Ventress

Look for the first look at Anakin in the Star Wars Insider #72. And check back soon for images of these figures.

http://www.hasbro.com/starwars/pl/page.headlines/id.952/dn/default.cfm

I'm looking forward to seeing what these things look like, which is a bit strange, since I have absolutely no interest in any of the other Clone Wars stuff at all. . .
