The Bullpen / Re: The Avengers: The Toys
« on: August 15, 2013, 09:11 PM »
I saw these last night, and OMG are they horrible.  Hasbro really dumbed this line down.  Granted, the new movie won't be out until 2015.  But Hasbro and Marvel couldn't figure a way to give the movie realistic line a little more life?  Especially since Avengers was such a huge hit at the box office?!?!?

The Black Series 3.75" / Re: The Black Series 3.75" - 2013 Wave 3

Nice to finally see Merumeru!  The rumors during SDCC & CE2 were cool, but finally seeing the figure is believing!  And it looks like Hasbro has stepped up their sculpting on this particular Wookiee.  And seeing how good it looks on the card, I'm hoping that Hasbro will get around to revisiting Tarfful at some point, too.  The ROTS version of him was weak in comparison.

Watto's Junk Yard / Re: The Official Shark Thread
« on: August 12, 2013, 02:27 PM »
Shark Week is definitely one of the highlights of the summer as always.  But is anyone else getting annoyed with the fake documentaries that Discovery Networks have been running over the past couple of years?  I would have gladly tuned in to a show about the prehistoric shark Megalodon.  A shark that was as big as a whale is fascinating all on it's own.  So why did Discovery need to produce a fake documentary, complete with their fictionalized "home video" of a whale that had been bitten in half?

To that end, I found the shows about the Great White Sharks that have been frequenting Cape Cod far more interesting simply because it's a real, natural occurance.

Watto's Junk Yard / Re: Thor (Movie & Sequels)
« on: August 7, 2013, 07:55 PM »
Very cool as trailers go.  I'm glad to see that Loki is still in the mix.  In the movies thus far, the relationship between Thor and Loki has helped both characters immensely.  And I think Alan Taylor was a good choice for a director this time around.  Kenneth Branaugh did a good job with establishing the characters in the first film.  But Taylor's experience on Game of Thrones has shown that he can work well in an immersive fantasy type of genre and give it a sense of realism that sucks in the audience.

But the question remains:  will the audience buy "Chuck" as the new Fandral?  ;)

The Black Series 3.75" / Re: The Black Series 3.75" - 2013 Wave 1
« on: August 7, 2013, 12:00 AM »
A friend of mine found the whole wave locally and offered to pick them up for me. Surprisingly, I passed and thanked him for the offer. This wave is probably going to be relatively easy to score and I didn't want to make my buddy wait since I was out of town for the past few days.

The Bullpen / Re: Thor: The Toys!

I get the sense that perhaps I was still in the halcyon daze of the Avengers line, where the distribution of hero figures was actually somewhat reasonable (except for that one silly Reactron armor Iron Man), and that the Avengers model might serve as a lesson going forward for Hasbro.

But then I snapped out of it.

Figures for Thor - The Dark World were shown at SDCC, but not so you would've noticed.  The sculpts on these look pretty good. I just hope that Hasbro learned some lessons from the first Thor toy line and doesn't flood the market with a dozen different versions of Thor.

Bwah-hahahahahahaha.  You crack me up Nick.  Habro learning.   :D

I know.

Silly me.

Star Wars Celebrations / Re: Star Wars Celebration: Anaheim
« on: July 29, 2013, 06:27 AM »
From what I understand, the convention center in Anaheim is very close to Disneyland.  That seems very likely to have been a significant factor in steering the location of Celebration 7.  As locations go, I know that there have been a lot of comments from fans who would like to see a Star Wars Celebration in their region.  But with Disney in charge now I can see the methodology in keeping Celebration close to one of the theme parks.

As for the timing?  It's actually in line with the timing of the first three Star Wars Celebrations, which were all scheduled just a few weeks before the release of each of the Prequel Trilogy movies.  It may not be ideal to get away for families during the school year.  But I can recall seeing plenty of families in attendance at both Celebration 2 and Celebration 3.  If people really want to go, they're going to go.

I hope that Reed is going to stay on as the promoter.  I like how they've built up New York Comic Con, although I didn't get a chance to attend the Star Wars Celebrations that they promoted.  And I think they probably did a far better job than the promoters who did Celebration 2, 3 and 4.

Mermuru is in that case assortment

According to VolkerC, who has had a pretty good track record.  But did Hasbro show an image of Merumeru at the CE2 panel?  Or did the display case get updated?

Ree Yees is a case where we know that Hasbro can do better.  That being said, the POTF2 Ree Yees was one of the better figures in that line.  But compared with a figure like Ask Aak or Mawhonic, we know that Hasbro can make a better Gran.  I have to regard Tessek as less of a priority than both Yakface or Ree Yees.  But I'd still like to get some other Jabba's palace characters like Doallyn, Geezum or Loje Nella, too.

It's an interesting mix of a wave, although the absence of core characters is a bit of a head scratcher.  I guess Hasbro's approach is changing.  Plagueis is definitely a cool concept.  And Neyo seems to be a step forward as far as phase II Clones go.

I definitely like Vizam.  Although that figure appears to essentially be a resculpt of the Nikto from the POTF2 skiff guards cinema scene.  That figure did need updating, so this is fine by me.  For my tastes, if Hasbro is going to work their way through resculpting the older goons from Jabba's palace, I'd like to see them alternate those releases with new characters.  I agree that a new Yakface would be in order.  The POTF2 version is weak in comparison with modern figures.  But please don't do things like that at the expense of getting new figures out.

Definitely surprised that we haven't seen some figures like the A-Wing pilot and the realistic Captain Rex.  Maybe the Hasbro panel will shed some light there?

I finally saw the first wave of the new Saga Legends line tonight.  Truth be told, the sculpts are not terrible.  I actually like the Yoda and R4-P17, to be honest.  But I know I don't need the droid, and I get the feeling that this Saga Legends Yoda may be the version that gets packed in with the TRU exclusive Gunship.

Are they still underarticulated?  Going by 2007-2012 standards, yes.  But the Hasbro Star Wars business model has changed, and they now have to focus on higher volume sales.  That means offering a product line at a lower price point that will draw in more customers.  How to do that?  Cut costs.  And do that by reducing articulation.  Still, I was pleasantly surprised by the portraits/likenesses on the figures I saw tonight.  And I get the sense that no, Chicken Little, the sky is not falling.

The Black Series 3.75" / Re: San Diego Comic Con 2013!

I think that's just marketing.  Keep things fresh and different to keep eyes looking.  I understand the thought.  It's not all about the collectors obsession with it but rather the buying public at large.

+1

Packaging changes are really about *SEEMINGLY*  keeping things fresh with the public.  And a superficial thing like a packaging change will do that.  We all walk down the toy aisle and after a while we become used to seeing certain things.  But when new packaging gets introduced it can catch the eye of a potential customer and get them wondering "Hmmm, what's this now?"

These look pretty awesome!  And I think it's the right way to present these particular Jedi.  On their own, I think they would have the potential to pegwarm.  But in this kind of multipack, I think it's going to get more potential interest.  And this definitely knocks some characters off of my AOTC wants list!
