Definitely some interesting stuff in there.  The character pairings make sense.  Although I'm left wondering what that final 2-pack is in the lower right hand corner.

It makes some sense, and lines up with the whole notion of 'A New Hope' as well as the title of Episode VI.

I made the same mistake as you, Rob, when I first saw that photo.  Poor Anthony Daniels, with people forgetting about him!  Also, no Kenny Baker in the photo.  But what is he going to do at a table read?

Star Wars Universe / Re: Disney to Purge Select EU

Lucas very likely came up with the outlines for the Sequel Trilogy in an effort to sell Lucasfilm / Star Wars.  Without something like that to sweeten the deal, I can't see why Disney would have bought the company.  The big money for them would have been with new movies.

I think the status of some stories in the EU will become more clear as we move forward.  Clearly, the REBELS series is going shape things as is the production of the Sequel Trilogy and the spinoff movies.  Those productions are going to be the signposts that determine what's valid or "canon".  I think the Star Wars Story Group is going to have to remain somewhat mum about things in an effort to keep from spoiling the new movies and tv projects.

Other Toy Lines / Re: Pacific Rim Toys

Saw the Pacific Rim display at my local TRU yesterday.  WOW, I can't believe how aggressively they're going with this line.  Although I think the source material really has provided some good fodder for a toy line.

The big surprise?  Just how much bigger the packages are for the Kaiju.  They are enormous!  If my collecting budget weren't so tight I would seriously consider getting into this line.

Adam Driver doesn't need the prosthetic ears.  Have you seen his REAL ears?

Max Von Sydow does seem to be a big question mark here.  He wasn't present for the table read, or at least for the photo.  And I think he could easily fill two different types of roles:  the stern Imperial oligarch or Commander, or that of the Spirit Guide role that we saw in characters like the OT Obi-Wan.

Joe Quesada comments on Man of Steel

Quote
As a comic book fan, I wanted to love that movie so much. I just think at the end of the day, Zod was the hero of the movie to me. He wanted to save his race, and Superman didn't let him. Zod, in this particular incarnation, struck me as not necessarily an evil man, he had his orders, he had a mission.

I had the same exact reaction - one of the big failures with the script, IMO.

I had a similar reaction as well.  Michael Shannon, who played the new Zod, commented pretty freely about what he was going for with this new portrayal of Zod.  He offered great affection for the work that Terence Stamp had done with his rendition of Zod, but said that Stamp's Zod was very much a megalomaniac.  Shannon wanted his Zod to seem very much like he was a military man with a mission to save his people.  When he attacked the Kryptonian council you kind of sided with Zod since the council seemed so out of touch.

Where I think the script failed was that the threat of Zod to Earth wasn't sufficiently realized.  There was some horrific destruction shown in Metropolis, but it really just amounted to buildings being pulverized.  The only time where I found Zod's obsession was murderous was in that last scene at the train station.

Who was the redhaired dude from Harry Pothead?  Is that the redheaded kid from those movies, or no?  I never watched any of them.
Well, you're probably thinking of Rupert Grint, the red-haired Ron Weasley.  This guy played Ron's oldest brother... Weasleys all have red hair.

That pic has definite lens-flare.

It was a casting requirement for any Weasley in the Harry Potter films to be a Ginger, or at least look like one.

And speaking of Domnhall Gleason?  I know that there's been some rumors floating around about the child or Grandchild of Obi-Wan Kenobi floating around.  Seeing Domnhall Gleason's photo from his IMDB got some wheels spinning because of a very strong resemblance...

And Max Von Sydow?  Looking at some recent pictures of him harkens back to another OT actor...

The resemblances leave me thinking that both actors could be playing Kenobi's of some sort.

Now was it the lens flare, or was Max Von Sydow not present for the table read?

Wow.  We actually have some young actors with decent acting chops.  Oscar Isaac was great in the recent Coen Brothers film, Inside Llewyn Davis.  He also worked with Adam Driver in that film.

Domnhall Gleason played Bill Weasley in the last 2 films in the Harry Potter series.  He was also in a recent film called About Time in a leading role.

Daisy Ridley is currently in a series called "Mr.Selfridge" that I've heard some good things about, but not much more than that.

Andy Serkis is a fantastic addition to the cast.  I have to wonder if he's been cast for an onscreen part, or if he's going to be playing a motion-capture character.  He's really excelled in that sort of role following all of his work with Peter Jackson on LOTR and King Kong, as well as his work in Rise of the Planet of the Apes.

I had been hoping to see either Hugo Weaving or Benedict Cumberbatch cast as some sort of Imperial.  But damn, Max Von Sydow?!?! He's got that classic sort of gravitas that actors like Sir Alec Guiness, Peter Cushing and Christopher Lee brought to prior films.

I have to say, I like the Legends solution.  It keeps these established works out there for fans of those comics, games and novels to continue to enjoy.  LFL and Disney aren't purging those stories, but they do appear to be terminating those stories that don't fit within the timeline that they're trying to pursue with new projects like the REBELS animated series and the Sequel Trilogy.

I imagine what we may be about to encounter is which stories are going to continue on, and which are coming to an end.

Watto's Junk Yard / Re: A Game of Thrones (HBO)
« on: April 29, 2014, 08:59 AM »
Thanks, Mikey.  I think GRRM made the whole Reek/Ramsey Bolton story very confusing for a reason.  I know that when I read that part of the story I found those  chapters more than a little bit murky.

The show is going to some logical places that perhaps have not been explored by the books.  Jon Snow's story at The Wall is among those.  Looking back at the book, it seems like his story was actually a little bit abridged.  He gets back to Castle Black just in time for the Wildlings to attack.  I get the sense that happened in the books simply because there were so many storylines that he was trying to roll into a single book.  In retrospect A Storm of Swords is a really dense book, with a lot going on.  I suspect that the show is expanding on Jon Snow's story in an effort to build his character a bit more in light of what's to come for him as established in the books.

The last scene, like I said before, was really creepy.  But I think it's necessary in the context of the show.  Because it is so easy to get caught up in Dany's story, and the intrigue at Kings Landing.  All we have to go on about the dangers that lie north of The Wall are scenes with characters like Jon Snow, Samwell Tarly and Bran Stark.  But those brief scenes with the White Walkers and Melisandre looking into some flames, telling Stannis that the true war lies to the North tell you where this story will eventually go.  As the Starks say, Winter is Coming.

I noticed the divergences, too, and there's been several of them.

First?  Locke.  He's purely a creation of the show.  I think he was originally intended to be a stand-in for Vargo Hoat, leader of the Brave Companions.  He was at Harrenhal, and he cut off Jaime Lannister's hand in the book.  But in the show they've folded his role into Locke who is one of House Bolton's men.  And he made his way up to The Wall?  Really?  I understand Roose Bolton wanting to eliminate the last of the Starks in an effort to completely secure the North.  I just don't recall Theon/Reek ever letting the real info about Bran and Rickon's true fate getting exposed to Ramsey Snow and thereby Roose Bolton.

The events north of The Wall are definitely a creation of the show.  And you know that simply because none of those Night's Watch traitors were ever POV characters in the books.  I thought that the fate of the traitors had been left as them having killed one another off over time.  The sequence with Summer and Ghost was definitely a little surprising, and it left me hoping that the two dire wolves would be reunited.  And then for Bran and company to get captured?  Again, another divergence.  But I think the showrunners are trying to build some of the suspense and danger as Bran, Meera, Jojen and Hodor make their way North.

But that last scene?  OMG that was creepy.  Again, a creation of the show since those characters were never established as POV characters.

Checked again this morning and much to my relief, at least at this point, none of the books on my book shelf of well over 100 SW EU books have spontaneously combusted yet.

The combustion is schedules to occur on May the 4th.  ;D

Good point. Dang it!

Time to invest in some fire-proof comic boxes.

The Sequel Trilogy / Re: Star Wars Episode VII

Good.    Glad to see it confirmed.  Forcing the filmmakers to adhere to the post-ROTJ EU would be the equivalent of painting them into a story telling corner.  It was tough enough for George Lucas to make certain that he hit all the notes to set the stage in the prequels for the known backstory of the OT.  Expecting the Sequel Trilogy to do the same with stories that barely got George Lucas's attention would be a terrible thing to do.  It would kill any surprise that could come from these new movies.

In other more pertinent news, the budget for the movie has been roughly set at close to $200 million.  And 2nd unit photography has begun in Abu Dhabi.  Casting announcements appear to be coming soon, but according to Horn, he wants to leave that announcement to the filmmakers.
