Middle Earth / Re: The Hobbit - Toy Line

Gloin's absence is a little weird.  IIRC, someone mentioned that the Bridge Direct also has the license for LOTR, correct?  So perhaps they would do a Gloin / Gimli 2-pack?

The Black Series 6" Figures / Re: 6 Inch Figures?

I saw the RS post.  Let's wait and see.

After this Droid Factory fiasco, the scaling down of the starfighter vehicle line, and the shrinkage of Star Wars shelf space at retail, do we REALLY believe that Hasbro is going to double down on Star Wars and launch a new scale of figures?  And mind you, this is IN ADDITION to the 12" figure line that has just started showing up at retail?

As this arc goes on Maul is coming across as a much more complex and fleshed out character. His manipulation of the various factions has been very deft, and he's showing himself to be much more the Master to Savage Opress's apprentice.  And his fight with Pre Viszla?  It was one of the best moments of the season, if not one of the best duels of the series.  Viszla armed with his dark saber as well as the Mandalorian armor against an agile Force wielding Sith with a lightsaber made for some of the best combat we've seen in the series.  And you have to appreciate that Maul was struggling somewhat since he seems to be getting accustomed to the cybernetic legs that the Death Watch gave him.

Where does this all go?  Well, the season trailer with Sidious has to give you some indication that things are going to get more .... complicated.  And there's also the matter of Obi-Wan getting involved in the conflict, which we also saw in the early trailers.  I have to suspect that he may join forces with Bo Katan's faction in an attempt to restore Satine to power.

But the most interesting thing about this Maul/Savage/Death Watch arc?  We're getting into characters whose future doesn't have the level of certainty of the mainstays like Anakin, Obi-Wan, Padme, Yoda, etc.  We all know that those characters survive the Clone Wars to make it to the events of Episode III.  With the characters in the past couple of episodes we just don't know how things will shake out, and for me that makes for a much more compelling storyline.

I scored some DTF figures a couple of days ago, too.  At $5 a piece I was happy to pick up another Tusken Raider, the Gungan and the R5 droid.

Sad to hear that we won't be witness to how JJ Abrams would try to shoehorn some lens flare into the Star Wars saga.  :(

You can leave that to Drew Struzan  :P

Struzan....OUT!

The Star Wars one-sheet artist made this statement on his Facebook page:

Quote
Misunderstood…

A couple of friends at Disney were fantasizing about the new STAR WARS movies.

"Disney" has said nothing to me and I expect nothing. That a couple of friends were wishing is only an expression of the hope that many are sharing but says nothing regarding the Studio itself. Even if 'they' did ask, which Disney has not, I'd rather leave the new films to the next generation to interpret. I've had my time and they were exceptional blessings for which I will forever be grateful.

Tomorrow is a new day…drew

The Clone Wars '08-'13 / Re: Here's Who Hasbro Missed!

I think we definitely need to add Darth Maul with his new robotic legs and Savage Opress with his robotic arm to the discussion.  And some more Mandalorians would be most welcome, too!

The Vintage Collection / Re: The Future of Star Wars Collecting?

I don't think it's necessarily a shift in costs for the existing toy business model.  And I don't think it's a case of Hasbro VS Mattel VS McFarlane, etc.

I think it's more of a case of the toy industry we know as a whole VS companies like Apple, etc.  Apple devices and similar personal electronics are proving to be more of a kid's play platform.  Especially since devices like iPods and iPads are designed to support applications/software that appeal to kids as well as adults.  If you look at parents discretionary spending on their kids, I think you'll find a growing shift away from the toy aisle toward these personal electronic platforms and their related software / apps.

THIS is the big fight that Hasbro and other toy business companies need to be wary of.  I think they're far more worried about the Apples of the world than any other traditional toy company.

The Bullpen / Re: Iron Man 3 Toys

I saw an electronic Iron Man Mk 42 from the Iron Man 3 line at a TRU store a few days back.  The new armor look is cool, but this figure was about 18 - 20" tall, and not representative of what we're likely to see from the 3.75" figure system.

Here's hoping he leaves the lens flares at home.

It appears that the reports of JJ Abrams being out of the running to direct Episode VII may have been a bit premature.

The Black Series 3.75" / Re: Toy Fair 2013
« on: January 23, 2013, 11:24 AM »
I'm not going to complain about product that's geared towards a target market other than collectors.  It's simply not worth the effort.  Most of what we've seen from the UK Toy Fair looks pretty disposable.  The 12" Anakin to Vader?  Meh.  I got the ROTS version of that back in 2005, and it was much better.

I'm still in wait and see mode, because we're not going to see anything for the 3.75" figure system until Toy Fair happens in New York.  Kudos to Jedi News for the coverage, but Hasbro has been very calculated in how they release news & images of the new line for the past several years.

I was genuinely surprised to see these turn up at a WalMart store a few days ago.  But so far I've refrained from getting into this line.

The Game of Thrones YouTube Channel now has some Season 3 video from the set.  We're still over 2 months away from the premiere of Season 3, but stuff like this is getting me pretty excited to see how the show will take on the events of A Storm of Swords.

I have to say, I think Eminence was the best episode so far this season.  Maul and Savage are a force to be reckoned with.  Their scheming against the Mandalorians, all while building an alliance with them, really gets to the heart of the Sith identity.  Using a potential adversary for your own gain, all while planning on betraying them in the long term makes Darth Maul look like a far more sophisticated character than we ever saw in The Phantom Menace.

I definitely enjoyed watching Maul, Savage and the Death Watch going to Mustafar to meet with Black Sun.  Bringing the Falleen & Black Sun in to the mix was a very nice nod to Xizor from Shadows of the Empire.  And if you're a fan of the comics it was also a cool callback to the Dark Horse limited series that featured Darth Maul taking on Black Sun prior to the events of The Phantom Menace.

....And then they take on the Hutt crime families?  That was pretty amazing.  First they go to Nal Hutta, which is a major EU gem.  Yeah, I know the show has gone there before, but this time it just had a bit more gravity.  Plus, the combined Sith / Death Watch / Black Sun forces attack Jabba's Palace on Tatooine?

My only gripe here?  That we had to sit through that terrible Onderon arc, and the first half of the D-Squad arc to get here.

The special collectors 3-packs are being clearanced at Target.

And if you are certain person at another website, that's an excuse to vent at supposedly cheapskate collectors, because, blah, blah...these sets were so good or something that they shouldn't have made it to clearance (even though the earlier ones did).

Saw that last night, too. TVC basic figures are also on clearance at Target. Saw some for $6.98 each last night. So I figured why not get a couple more Battle Droids for my MTT?  But I get the feeling that TVC figures on clearance probably aren't going to last for long.
