Discover the Force / Movie Heroes / Re: Re: Vintage Rumors
« on: February 12, 2012, 01:38 PM »
The Rebel set is definitely very similar in theme to 2011's BATTLE OF ENDOR multi-packs.    And I'm glad to see some of the Battle of Yavin pilots who actually have dialogue getting figures.  I really hope they're legit!

As for the Ewoks?  We've known that Kneesa was in the works for at least a year, but got split off from a possible 2-pack with Wicket.  And updated Teebo would be awesome, too.  And more new Ewoks are certainly welcome in my book since Hasbro has finally gotten around to finishing the Kenner Ewoks.

Based on what we've seen in recent history?  I'm thinking that these are probably TRU exclusives.  I guess we're going to have to wait and see what develops with these.

So far all I've found of this wave are Ric Olie & G8-R3 as well as the leftovers like the Tusken Raider and Destroyer Droid.  It goes without saying that the Qui-Gon's, Obi-Wan's and Darth Maul's have been lingering.

What you're looking for looks like a gift card with Star Wars and some TPM deco on it.  The terms are pretty loose, but it's supposed to be good for $10 off of a Hasbro Star Wars purchase.  The cashier scans it at checkout in order to apply the promotion to your checkout.

It's not exactly news.  I posted about this over a week ago:

The TRU sale definitely made this week's purchases a lot easier to deal with.  I was able to price adjust my purchase from Saturday, and got the remainder of the new figures today.  Here's my TVC haul...

...Plus, when I got to the register tonight the TRU employee surprised me with even MORE savings than just the 3 for 2 deal.  He had a coupon for $10 off for Hasbro Star Wars purchases.

The JTA reporter in question thinks he stumbled upon something brand new, but these coupons have been out there since the official street date at least.  I got $10 off of one of my own TVC TPM wave puchases simply because the cashier scanned this coupon card.  And from his reaction when I checked out, he nearly forgot about it himself.  His reaction as I was checking out was "Oh wait, I have these coupons to scan for Hasbro Star Wars purchases".

IIRC, this promotion may last through 2/12 (meaning this Sunday).  But the discount isn't automatically applied at the register when you ring up.  Rather, the associate needs to scan the coupon card in order to get you the $10 off.  And as a result this discount hasn't been getting applied universally.

Dooku had the credibility/backstory of being a respected Jedi Master as well as a rich noble.  From a story standpoint it's more feasible for the Seperatists to follow Dooku as opposed to Darth Maul.

Also, Darth Maul was outwardly Sith.  Dooku was publically regarded as a Jedi who had left the Jedi Order.  That adds to his respectability, despite him secretly being in league with the Sith.  That deception and the ensuing manipulation served the Sith cause far more than Darth Maul's martial skills.  Plus, Dooku's departure from the Jedi Order casts doubt on the status of the Jedi in the Republic.

The political machinations of the Prequel Trilogy are there, but they lie a little bit beneath the surface.

Saw the Republic Attack Shuttle on clearance at WalMart today.  I'm passing on getting more than just the one unless I see an absolutely ridiculous deal.

I'm definitely getting a sense that Adam Pawlus was onto something with the last crop of Class I vehicles and their interchangeable weapons.

I can only imagine how this is going to work:

Quote
In fall, kids can gear up for battle with STAR WARS AMP’D. For the first time ever, kids will be able to quickly and easily customize the most iconic STAR WARS vehicles and prepare them for any mission: land, space, sea or air! In 2012, the line features 9 figures and 6 vehicles.

Following Scott's lead and looking through this list....

Like I just posted in the other thread on this general topic, I think there will be some scaling back.  And a look at the numbers is very much a significant part of that discussion.

As for OT figures I'd like to see resculpted?

A NEW HOPE
-Grand Moff Tarkin
-Ponda Baba
-Dr. Evazan
-Owen Lars
-Rebel Fleet Trooper

THE EMPIRE STRIKES BACK
-Luke Skywalker - Hoth
-Leia - Hoth
-Han Solo - Bespin
-Dack Ralter
-Leia - Cloud City escape
-Luke Skywalker - Dagobah training
-Admiral Piett

RETURN OF THE JEDI
-Gamorrean Guard
-Jabba the Hutt
-Saelt Marae (Yakface)
-Weequay skiff guard
-Oola
-EV-9D9
-Nein Nunb - Millenium Falcon co-pilot
-Admiral Ackbar
-Mon Mothma
-Wicket W. Warrick
-Logray

A couple of these seem to have been confirmed.  But until I actually see a hardcopy of a new figure I'm going to refrain from crossing them off the list.

EDIT - Glad to be able to cross of Tarkin, Weequay & Nien Nunb after Toy Fair!

The UK Toy Fair combined with social media have pretty well negated any surprise factor going into the NY International Toy Fair.  Lots of things wound up leaking out that way.  I think there's likely to be at least a couple of surprises this weekend, but probably nothing major.  The MTT is out of the bag, and that was THE big thing.

Hasbro no doubt has a press release schedule that they'll be adhering to for the remainder of the year.  Those have leaked before, notably when we learned about the new AT-AT.  And they will likely be unveiling certain items at SDCC, others at Celebration 6, and the AOTC-3D line at NYCC.

Don't get me wrong:  A LOT of business gets conducted at Toy Fair.  When I was in the waiting room at Diamond Distribution one year, there was a buyer from a significant retailer coming in for an appointment.  And this was at a time when they were handling Diamond Select Toys, Kotobukiya and some other significant properties.  This is going on while these companies are also dealing with press appointments.  Most of the press seems to be focused on the first day or so of Toy Fair since there's such a push to get news out as quickly as possible.

In the case of Hasbro they are actually located off-site from the Javits Center and manage all of their press and retail appointments far tighter than companies that are on the floor at the convention center.  They had the showroom across the street from the Javits Center that was more tightly controlled, but it wasn't really suited to a presentation.  As a result they were holding that event over at the NY Times auditorium, and they even moved their showroom there as well.  I can't say that I saw the Hasbro people conducting meetings with retailers there, but this location seems far better suited to the high press demand that they've had over the past several years.

Kevin Feige also mentioned that the Kree aren't in the mix, either.  Apparently someone had been hypothesizing about a Kree-Skrull war that spills over to Earth.  This apparently isn't in the mix.

IAll of that said...I often wonder how and when exclusives are solicited?  Because it isn't at Toy Fair where you would think they would be...must be some sort of internal process between the companies...I still hold out hope for the Ewok Pack(s), Darth Vader Pyre and hopefully Rebel/Astromech packs.  I guess we'll see Friday

Solicited? I thought Toy Fair was just a showing off to the media, all the business stuff is done months before, mass release and exclusives.

There is a Toy Fair event that takes place around October every year that is closed to the public as well as press.  It's very likely that THIS is the event where the manufacturers make the major push to sell potential exclusives to their retail partners.

The Vintage Collection / Re: Tonnika Sisters coming?
« on: February 7, 2012, 12:51 PM »
This definitely makes for an interesting discussion.  And over the history of the line we've seen both Kenner and Hasbro source characters from a myriad of different sorts of media.  The obvious ones?

-MOVIES
-TELEVISION SERIES (Droids, Ewoks, Clone Wars animated series)
-HOLIDAY SPECIAL (First appearance Boba Fett)
-VIDEO GAMES (SOTE, TFU, Battlefront & more)
-COMIC BOOKS

But there have also been sources from:
-DELETED MOVIE SCENES (Upcoming TVC wave)
-CONCEPT ART (McQuarrie Series)
-NOVELS (R4-K5 from Dark Lord, I-5YQ from DARTH MAUL - SHADOW HUNTER & Whistler among others)
-THEME PARK RIDES (Star Tours)

Based on all of those genres for source material, we have really run the gamut in terms of WHERE an individual figures origins have arisen.  A commercial would be new territory in terms of sourcing, but would it be all that much of a stretch considering the other avenues that have generated figures?  Considering the overall breadth of source material for figures I don't think source material matters so much.  So again, it comes down to the characters and whether or not Lucas Licensing will sign off on them.
