Hasbro does love their Mando's after all.

The movie is almost a year out.  July 3rd, 2012 is the release date.  It's the first trailer.  At this point I have low expectations since some Sony studio exec probably told the director "Get me a trailer in time for Comic Con or you're fired".

Rob, I get that.  It is a TEASER trailer, after all.  If this movie is still a year out, it still has a lot of refining to go through.  I would not be surprised if they were still in principle photoraphy, if not pickup shoots.  And I doubt the POV wallcrawling is going to make it into the film.  This teaser seems like it is very likely something the studio was pushing for SPECIFICALLY for the week of Comic Con.  It's not a coincidence that it was released today.

As for story?  We have to wait for the movie to figure out if this is going to be any good.  Stylistically the director seems to be trying to make a break from what Sam Raimi did.  From a lighting and story perspective they already seem to be trying to make Peter Parker much more of an angst-ridden kid:  orphan, raised by his Aunt & Uncle, isolated in school, etc.  The Raimi trilogy tried to touch on that but also tried to bring in some of the humor that was part of the Spiderman story.  That was a good part of the charm of that series, along with the Bruce Campbell cameos.  Will this re-boot work?  We have to see the movie to make that determination.

I think the studio execs definitely wanted people to be talking about the movie going into Comic Con.  And no doubt there will be an SDCC Hall H panel about the movie sometime this week.

From the trailer, I got that they want to play up the teen angst angle of Spiderman, and maybe tap into that audience.  FWIW, I think the POV shots of Spiderman doing some wallcrawling was actually somewhat interesting.  I wasn't checking it out in the HD settings that Yahoo movies offers, so maybe there's still some work to be done there.  But I think it's an interesting way for this new movie to set itself apart from the Sam Raimi trilogy of movies.  In those we saw a lot of web-slinging, but not as much wallcrawling.  In this regard it seems like the director is trying to distance his work from what Sam Raimi did, and I can't say that I blame him.  Oh, and I'm also glad to see the mechanical web shooters are back!

I think the Tauntaun priced out at $16.99, so it's not such a bitter pill to swallow.  As long as this one is specific to Luke, and the battle pack version is specific to Han, I'm fine with this.

Overall there's nothing all that surprising to be seen.  But Hasbro always does hold something back for a big reveal at their panel on Friday.  If they fail to have anything worthwhile to show on Friday, THEN I'll be disappointed.

I finally took the plunge on some Cap figures today.  I'm sticking to the movie figures only, and got the Super Combat Cap, Red Skull and the Deluxe Hydra soldier.  In an ideal world I would LOVE to get a Dum-Dum Dugan figure, but seeing how the Thor figure line has had so many troubles, I don't really expect to see a figure of Dum-Dum any time soon.

Is that a pilot pack in front of the speeder?

It looks like one of the Battle of Endor sets that are currently TRU exclusives.

Even with Flex Pay, I don't know if I can pull the trigger on this.  IG-88 looks nothing short of amazing, but the finances are just a little bit tighter these days.

Very surprising that this one got chosen, considering it will be in the Starfighter assortment.

Also, this seems to be an indication that there's going to be a REVENGE variant of Vader

The fact that he's in the SDCC mega-pack is a pretty good sign too.  :P

Silly me.

All in all it's a slightly underwhelming first look.  I'm sure we'll see some more in a few hours.

Security for the SDCC floor is relatively tight, and exhibitor badges are the only thing that will get you on the floor before Preview Night kicks off.  Those are tough to come by.  I managed to get one for SDCC coverage a couple of years ago and wound up pretty surprised by just how much I was able to photograph before the crowds came in for Preview Night.  I am very surprised to see that Superherohype was able to get in THIS early.  But unless we see a SW fan site get in early I think we won't see anything appreciable until about 8-10 PM ET tonight.

SDCC in person really is something impressive, and seeing it firsthand is the only way to completely grasp just how massive of an event it's become.  Almost all of the exhibitor booths are being built and setup right until the moment the doors open.  And word has been filtering in that some people already started lining up outside the convention center as early as Monday.

I also continue to be astounded by the fact that they're still managing to stay in San Diego.  When I went in 2009 I heard that there were an estimated 200,000 people in town for Comic Con.  It's a great city and I would definitely visit there some time other than Comic Con.  But the Con seems to be outgrowing the facility.  There's been talk of moving to another city, but San Diego seems committed to expanding to meet the growth of Comic Con.  LA seems to be contending for the Con, since so many movies are being promoted at the show.  But only Las Vegas may  have a big enough convention center and accomodations to host the show.
